The original Japanese version of weight of the world, the singer was crying by the end of the recording that her voice trembled and faltered. The director loved the emotion so much that it was used as the final recording for the song in the game.
@@MusicTheoryforGamers each version (Chaos language , English , and Japanese) are more or less had the same message in the lyrics, but with different words (most likely also from different character's POV). The English Version is more about facing the consequences of the past mistakes while fighting against hopelessness. While the Japanese version is more about facing loneliness and the pain of losing loved ones. The Chaos version... we're not really sure (more or less, its about the same depressing elements). Just to help you understand the context, this is taken from the Nier Automata Book "Memory Thorn" (comes with the game if you bought the special edition or something) : 2B had to kill 9S again and again, she thought it was a sin and one day the weight of her sins has grown too heavy for her she tried to end her life, the life of a defective product, a defective E-Type but 9S stopped her and instead he cut his throat to avoid 2B from doing it this time he fell on the ground, she took him in her arms, his blood covering her face She began to scream "WHY, WHY" countless times, he died again because of her “Don’t apologize. Instead…” Even with his rough breathing, 9S was smiling. “Next time...don’t hesitate...to kill me. Because we….will meet again.” “I promise you.” 'That I won’t hesitate to kill you. The next time, or the time after that.' not because of her mission, but because that’s what 9S wanted. To grant his wish of meeting again...she’ll kill him. She made a promise, a cruel blood oath
the music is ten times more amazing in game. for example with memories of dust, the song progresses as you go further into the area of the game the song plays and it feels as if you’re actually there
I love how the music flows as you run through the sand, sliding down dunes... and if you know the story behind this desert and the masks. Simply beautiful, as everything in this game is.
The fact he sounds like he's forgetting sections and missing cues only to pick them up a fraction of a second late really sells Emil's character to me. Like he misses a cue, hears the next notes and "Oh right, that's the next sound" I really wonder if they just got Emil's VA in the booth, put the music on and "Just sing whatever comes to mind"
Protip: the reason why "Emil's shop" is a brilliant piece of music is because its the theme of a character who's got memory issues, and the vocals are performed specifically in such a way as to create the impression of someone singing a song that they only vaguely remember.
@@fabiangutierrezvevo6796 Same melody and structure. Hegel's theme is just that without the lyrics, too, making me think it was some sort of attempted replication.
that's why, even tho this soundtrack is amazing and i listen to it all the time, listening to it while playing the game is a whole different experience and makes it all that much better it's just genious
Probably the best thing about this game's Soundtrack is the fact that nearly Every Single Track has *at least* 3 Versions of it with one as an 8-Bit Rendition, another as just the Instrumentals, and one more with Lyrics. These Versions are then all played on top of each other simultaneously but with only 1 hearable at a time, this allows the Versions to seamlessly transition to one another depending on your situation in the gameplay and it is insanely immersive. For example start the battle and you'll be introduced to the Instrumentals, enter a Hacking Minigame and the 8-Bit kicks in, finish that Minigame and it immediately transitions back to Instrumentals, getting to the later phase of an enemy or getting put in a sticky situation well allow the Lyrics to introduce themselves and act as your own personal hype-man as you skillfully break free of danger or are getting ready lay the smackdown on something.
@@rohanreddy2144 usually you can just search the name of the Track followed by 8-bit, there's also some videos that will start with the whole 8-bit version then transition into the instrumentals and after that lyrics.
The Nier franchise has some of the most transcendent VGM out there, definitely happy to see Automata here. The original and remastered OST’s for Nier Replicant are definitely worth a listen to. As a fair few of Automata’s tracks are versions of tracks from Replicant.
the best part is even if you get bored of the music theirs so many mixes and covers and edits and the like that it seems like theirs always more to listen to.
The Chaos Language aims to emulate certain languages without actually being those languages. Voice of No Return, for example, is meant to sound like French without actually being French. This is done to postulate what certain languages could sound like in thousands of years; completely unrecognizable in terms of vocabulary, but with very familiar linguistics cues.
are most songs in this unrecognizable vocabulary? or do some songs just actually have specific vocabulary in it? cos i'm not french or german, but some songs throughout the franshise i'm like "oh, thats german", are they just using germanic linguistics but not actually german vocabulary?
@@askechadd2473 For a lot of the songs, Emi Evans (lyricist and one of the vocalists) had a base language she took and tried to imagine how it might sound in another thousand years. Meaning that there’ll be a lot of thing where you think you recognize a language, but it’s not the actual words of that language. The first Nier game has a song called Ashes of Dreams, which has four versions. The “New” version, sung in real English, then the Aratanaru, Nuadhaich, and Nouveau versions, which are chaos language variants of Japanese, German, and French, respectively. Those sound a lot like the language they emulate, but it’s still the fake languages. But there’s also songs (such as Song of the Ancients) that are in a fully original language, basically fusing aspects of various languages until there was something new to work with. Yoko Taro, the game director, wanted music with vocals, but Keiichi Okabe, the main composer, didn’t want real lyrics in the vocals which may distract from the dialogue of the characters. Hence, the Chaos language.
It's also so they can have more emotional background music during scenes with dialogue, if everything was in an understandable language it would be tough to understand the characters conversations and emotion due to another set of words being played on top of it. Something you don't really notice but that's why in the majority of other games scenes with dialogue will have Only Music with No Lyrics or No Music at all.
@@-libertyprimev1-902 That’s actually why the composer wanted the lyrics to be that. The director wanted music with vocals, and the composer didn’t want it to distract people.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 And their compromise ended up being an indirect bit of absolutely brilliant but subtle storytelling considering the amount of time that has passed since our present languages and the future present of Nier Automata. For the curious, it's almost 10,000 years.

@@mr.stuffdoer8483 since i just replayed the game, yes it does play through the darkest side quests. Like the resistance member who tries to restore a broken 9s to make it its own family. Or the robot in the forest kingdom who only talks about how the robots who died in the kingdom got what they deserved.
I love the out-of-game story behind "Faltering Prayer (Dawn Breeze)", because Yoko Taro (the main director of the game) has a bit of a disdain for Keiichi Okabe (lead composer) because of how much praise for NieR gets directed at the music. So to mess with Okabe, he took this song, which Okabe had said was one of his favorites out of the whole soundtrack, and had it play only once in the entire game, as a reward for completing a completely optional and very tedious side-quest.
I was desperately looking for a video like this for like two months or so after I first beat the game. Now I find it after I finally managed to move on from that obsession.
The fact that "weight of the world" plays at the very end of the game and is the first and ONLY song with lyrics in a real language is so powerful. All the way until this point it's been chaos langauge. A language of emotion but no discernable meaning. But at the end it's like everything crystallizes, humanity is regained and the confused voices join together as one.

Both Nier Automata and the remaster of its prequel Nier Replicant both won Best Music at the Game Awards. As much as I'm not a fan of the Game Awards, I don't remember ever being upset with any of their Best Music winners and I love that they got the recognition they deserve.
@@vetreas366 also mad, but slightly less so, that replicant ver 1.2 didn't get game of the year. Not a mega fan of replicant like I am for automata, + it's a remake so like I kind of get it. But when people talk about best games of that year, I have to put an unclipped thumb into their eye for not mentioning replicant. Most of its because they don't even know it exists tho so whatever.....okay no not whatever. More people need to play both of these games dammit.
NieR: Automata is one of those games that make me sad I can never play it for the first time again. It's still a great game worth replaying, but I'll never be able to experience entertaining the city with the soundtrack kicking in and getting all these new visuals with the amazing soundtrack kicking in
If you want more of "can never play it for the first time" games, try "Outer Wilds" (NOT "The Outer Worlds"; they're separate games). It's very different, but a masterpiece just the same. Also, you should play it with as little knowledge as possible going in.
Its years since I played it but it is stuck in my head, visually, musically and storywise. It is a masterpiece I will never forget but i have also the fear for playing it again and feel the same sad feelings again at the end.

What I love the most about Nier Automata isn't its gameplay, but its lore, music, and its philosophy of life. It is the most philosophical game that I know. Yoko Taro mainly focus on trying to connect emotion between the players and the game characters. It's really amazing, and I love it.
Most Yoko Taro games as fans theorize are specifically made to have a bad gameplay because killing isn't supposed to be fun. First game I replayed for it's plot and atmosphere.
@@mrtimurer that’s fair, but I think the intention was still to make the gameplay better tho, if they wanted the gameplay not to be fun they would have left it as is. Even if the remake doesn’t have amazing gameplay it’s still better than the original, and getting platinum to do automata shows that they really did want good gameplay for that one
It's interesting how Grandma(destruction) is an action version of what was originally a quite somber song of Kaine's loss and suffering, like it's been so long since then that the original meaning has been lost.
i played automata first and immediately went into nier replicant, not fully understanding the timeline. When I realized the story, with Emil and the gang and how things end up, that was just another round of oof I wasn't prepared for. The music is genius in capturing that story
“This music is so good it makes me want to play the game” And I couldn’t recommend it enough. Visually it has some issues, but the fast paced combat is really fun and the story is every bit as good as the soundtrack.
Tbh I'd even pay 60$ again just to get a "next gen" rerelease of automata. Fixed pop in issues on foliage in the city ruins, fixed pacing issues with Koshi and roshi boss battle perspective changes, added the options to make the volume on music go even higher, added 4K support, added option for performance mode and graphics mode (performance being 120fps like doom eternal), (graphics being better fidelity and lighting) Added rumble support maybe?, and I guess a general graphics improvement. Maybe slide us a short story from the short story long novel as bonus content like what replicant got. What im really asking for at this point is an automata ver 1.2 like what replicant got. Minus the music redone. I would like it if they allowed players to choose between the game ost, and the orchestral release ost tho. Those adaptations of the songs are so good.
@@dugtrioramen The main things with the visuals for me is the cutscenes. Pre-rendered cutscenes generally look _worse_ than the actual game, which is bizarre. There’s a cutscene early on where a character’s hair clips through their body. And it’s a pre-rendered cutscene. How does that happen?
@@trevorveillette8415 Personally I’d prefer Drakengard remasters/remakes first. Automata isn’t dated enough for that yet, while those were dated on release.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 I just care a lot more for automata than drakengard and replicant. So I want it to get some nice treatment. Although the anime adaptation is quite nice, news wise at least. No guarantees on quality yet. I'd like drakengard 1 and 3 remastered/remade. I'll skip 2 since Taro didn't touch that one.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 personally I like it being the Up To Chance thing, where the enemy must be free to use this attack when that part of the track comes along, because it can be missed that gives unexpected new experiences on later playthroughs. Also a reason to play on harder difficulties where the fights will be longer giving you more time to hear all the sweet sweet tracks.
Vague hope (cold rain) is one of my favourites of the whole ost, however the (spring rain) version just does something to me that no other song does in this soundtrack
If you liked this soundtrack, I would absolutely recommend checking out the original Nier game, which was remastered last year as Nier Replicant! Much of the Nier Automata soundtrack is inspired by the original game, and it shares many of the same musical tropes, such as the unique langauge.
ideally, i would recommend he listen to the original soundtrack rather than the remaster! It's still good, but it ruined a lot of tracks for me, while making better only like 2 tracks
@@gigaganon I agree, actually. Though, to be honest, I haven't been able to find a good upload of the remastered soundtrack to really listen through it.
@@gigaganon I don't know how that is such a popular take, I loved ALL the remastered tracks, even though they're different, and I can't imagine how they could have possibly "ruined" aaaanything.
Keiichi Okabe and Emi Evans, the absolute legends of VGM. There’s no better OST creators in gaming, IMO. Not to mention the sheer awesomeness of Keiichi remixing 10 of the songs he just remade just for a bonus disc of the Nier Replicant remake collector’s edition, just cuz Yoko Taro asked him to.
Yuka Kitamura comes very close to them. Also some of the best tracks are not even composed by her in Bloodborne, the best OST of any game, which ties with the NieR series imho.
@@thomasbitmail7937 I’m not very super far into Bloodborne yet but the OST has yet to impress me, and SoulsBornes have an issue of almost never playing music. Nier has music at pretty much all times and every track is a masterpiece.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 yeah. But the ones they have (bosses) truly describe them in a feeling, that lots of games haven't yet reached. Just keep going and you will know what i am talking about, once you reach the DLC.
Please please do the Japanese version in part two! It's so emotional the singer actually cried through the end which added to the emotional experience of the song.
I absolutely love the Japanese version of Weight of the World. The lyrics are so much more impactful than in English, in my opinion! (I study Japanese and understand the Japanese lyrics, XD)
you commented that a lot of the songs end on ii (or less often IV). I think part of why that happens is because these tracks all loop in-game - that means that they resolve to the top of the piece instead of having an "end" and then starting again. It's also thematic with the focus on cycles (repeat playthroughs) in the game's narrative, so it ends up being great on several layers, though.
For people who don't know, the Chaos Language isn't one language put together and used for songs. Emi Evans was shown the instrumentals to a piece and sometimes was asked to create lyrics with a specific language in mind, though many times she was given the freedom to use any language she wanted. In regard to the original Nier, Song of The Ancients was the first piece she wrote and was given full creative freedom of it. She used German, French, Hungarian, Welsh, Japanese, French, Latin, and sounds she made up on her own. Okabe asked her to base Grandma on French, The Wretched Automatons is English, and Kaine/Salvation is Gaelic.
Automata music (and game itself) have opened something in me that allowed music to flow into my heart and feel emotions put into it. Never before have I truly enjoyed music but since then more and more pieces manage to pierce my heart. And to this day, after years, Automata OST still manage to sour my throat.
When you're done with the Automata OST (And the rest of the OSTs you have planned for the next 2 Saturdays) I'd recommend you reacting to the NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 OST, it's imo better than the original NieR Replicant/Gestalt OST, the only issue is that it's not on Spotify, so it's kinda hard to find, but worth it.
He could react to the original soundtrack from the 2010 game, that one’s on Spotify. It just wouldn’t be the newest version yeah, but it’s still amazing.
@@tatri292 I see where you're coming from. I personally played Nier many years before 1.22 came out, and when it did I actually disliked the rearranged OST. @@georgeken148 It's just I like the more prominent percussion in SotA and they took the beginning part out of Ashes for some reason. Both versions of both are great but I can't say that I prefer the new ones.
You should definitely react to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles 2's soundtracks. They're genuinely breathtaking, I highly recommend them! (also since we are in the hype season for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 it may get some extra attention)
56:29 _EVERY DAY'S A SALE, EVERY SALE'S A WIN intensifies_ I strongly recommend anyone watching this go find the english version, it's the best 😂 Emil is a treasure. 1:01:58 welp, and here come the feels. Yknow, Automata isn't subtle about when it uses this track, but it _still_ works. Huge fan of this game, and the soundtrack also! Very happy to see it here, can't wait for the rest! 😁
A lot of the songs in this OST can be described by the sentence “Even though the melody is the same and just loops throughout the song, none of the repeats are the same.” I love how much this OST makes subtle variations and evolutions on simple themes
This soundtrack gets me emotional in the most intense way, I'm very happy to listen to it again along with you. My favorite game of all time, hands down. I hope you had the chance to play it in your free time!
Nier: Automata has really nice music to listen to and go along with. It’s mostly very chill and sometimes a bit mysterious, and thats what i like about it. Some of the songs remind me of the Made in Abyss 1 and 2 soundtracks. They are both very nice to listen to. I’d recommend listening to them.
Emil really is the face of NieR, and quite literally the face of Yoko Taro, the director of these games. Incredibly tragic character. His shop song is really just a fun song in a crushingly depressing game/series.
One of the songs I wish was on the list was a version of "rays of light" called "shade", it feels more adventurous and has a lighter tone to it than rays of light, personally I enjoy shade a little bit more, but they're both so good
I must say that weight of the world is my favorite track from the entire ost, mostly for what it conveys. I would like to give a shoutout to FamilyJules and Caleb Hyles, who have done a fantastic job covering the song. It will not disappoint you, a 100% worth listen if you liked the original.
You literally listen to most soundtracks from the games that I recently played, that includes Sonic Mania, Doom, Nier Automata, Ace Attorney Trilogy, A Hat In Time and believe me if I have a PS4/5 I would have played Persona 5 as well, so far they all have great music overall. I decided to make a turnaround and follow your videos from now on. I would try the games you listened the soundtrack's from, and I bet it can't go wrong. Update: Just installed RPCS3 and I will start playing Persona 5 for the first time, I'm excited.
I love seeing your reactions to these songs, it reminds me how magical it was to hear those pieces for the first time, if I were to recommend another soundtrack for you, I’d say to give nier replicant’s OST a listen, it’s just as good as automata’s and you get to see how some songs on automata are just tributes to songs from the original game, like grandma, which is one of my favorite pieces from both games. Would love to see your reaction to these, love your content.
The music by itself is already unique and beautiful, some are powerful. But that could be multiplied when you are in the game , playing through it while listening to the music. Because the music and the world inside the game complement each other, as well as the characters and the lore/story that follows. Then it got even deeper when you understand the story behind everything... why it got to that point? why it's the way it is?
This soundtrack is so god-like! Weight of the World is a certified stank face inducer! btw, I would love to hear more comments and thoughts on the music, more theory. I really like the insight!
Thank you so much for choosing to react to the entirety of NieR: Automata's soundtrack. It was an absolute joy to watch all three of the streams and see your reactions to each of the tracks. Your passion for music was on full display and it was really inspiring for me. I've been wanting to comb through Automata's soundtrack for a long time since it is my favorite game. The soundtrack is a big part of what makes Automata such a special piece of media, and thanks to the inspiration I got from watching you react to all the songs, I decided I would go through all the tracks and discuss them both in terms of what a person may feel listening to them outside of the game and how the music is able to display certain aspects of the story without a person having to play through it. I'm mainly just rambling about it in the videos I'm making currently, but I'm hoping to make a more detailed analysis about the tracks in this soundtrack later on. So once again, thank you very much for the inspiration you gave me. The process of talking about Automata's soundtrack is one that's just a a great deal of fun for me right now and I don't think I would have attempted to try it if not for these live-streams you did. Getting to the amusement park for the first time was really one of the most magical experiences in the game. That cinematography mixed with the music was absolutely perfection in my opinion.
Quite probably one the most iconic moments in video gaming for me, just on those parts you mentioned. It's the only time I can ever remember playing a game and saying "wow!" Out loud.
J’Nique Nicole is the name of the singer that he mistook for a male during A Beautiful Song that he didn’t even question the femininity of during Memories of Dust. Her range is just that insane. I know everyone loves Emi Evans (and I definitely do too) but I simp for J’Nique. She’s such an amazing talent and so distinct.
I love the English version of Weight of the World, but the Japanese version is in a league of its own. The singer actually begins tearing up while singing the song and it adds a lot to the listening experience.
Chaos language isn’t really a language, since it’s untranslatable. It’s a collection of all languages. Not only Japanese, English, and German. There are Russian sounds, African, etc.
Some of my favourite game soundtracks, and in my opinion some of the most underappreciated game soundtracks, are from valve-made games. Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, Half Life 1 + 2 are all brilliant, I definitely recommend you check them out.
I agree with the comment above me, literally finally someone mentions these games. Also, Black Mesa deserves some recognition too. The soundtrack (and especially the music in Xen) is BEAUTIFUL.
The weight of the world song has a choir support which has been singed by developer team. It is so soulful. Best game and music i ever seen and listened.
I've had the Neir: Automata life background equipped on my PlayStation for so long when I heard the song high associated immediately with me turning on my PlayStation
Some OSTs I would recommend are. Dark Souls 1-3/Bloodborne/Sekiro Genshin Impact Doki Doki Literature Club Needy Streamer Overload Monster Hunter World/Iceborne Final Fantasy X(Final Fantasy tracks in general would be cool too) Not really a game but the show RWBY's OST is also really good. That's what I got for now, lol.
Thanks for this! I wanted to listen to Nier's OST but it's a bit slow for me. Having you commentating it makes it easier. Also, other OSTs you could react to: - Outer Wilds - Sayonara Wild Hearts - Furi - Danganronpa
I'm genuinely glad you hear so much of City of Ruins in the game because it's a song I could literally never get tired of and it just sets the stage for the rest of the game's aesthetic so well
banger video!! you really should react to the ost's of oneshot, lisa: the painful, and OFF! they're all really good games and i think you'd enjoy reacting to them
The music in this game (and in the Nier franchise in general) is phenomenal, but it's even better if you've played (or are playing) the game. Not only do you get the connection between the musical motifs and the story beats, the music engine in the game is masterfully adept at dynamically adding and subtracting tracks in real time, as well as shifting seamlessly between songs (and genres) depending on the action on screen. Nier: Automata is one of the best games I've ever played, and the only thing that's come close for me in recent times has been Elden Ring, which, while it has some similarities in tone and setting, is a very different game.
I really love seeing people starting to give this soundtrack more exposure. I am happy that others understand just how beautiful the arrangements are! I missed my chance to see the live orchestration but I hope they come back and do it again. :(
City Ruins its just, so, familiar like, you can stay there and feel like home, you feel calm and relaxed, you dont need to attack, just go arround and do the missions, that is the magic of NieR:Automata music, it fits the scenery and you feel the game itself, you feel the scenery like warms rays of light, its beautiful
I'm glad you're listening to this, NieR has such a unique soundtrack. I don't know if this would count but I just remembered there was a crossover event that FFXIV had with NieR: Automata that remixed the 'Weight of the World.' If you're wanting to check that out I would highly recommend it! Search: FFXIV OST - Weight of the World (Prelude Version)
Would love to see a reaction to the Nier Replicant ost, there's quite a few tracks Automata remixes and twists that are well worth hearing the originals of.
It has a *lot* of music, but Final Fantasy XIV also has in general a very high quality soundtrack. There's a few pieces that are worse than others, but in general those ones are also a lot shorter than the good ones.
didn't get to watch this live, but super excited nonetheless! I've wanted this so long haha. it's such a stellar ost all the way through, automata and gestalt have some of my favorite osts ever. I'm glad you decided to split it up bc it's so long and it all deserves to be listened to and processed fully ! 21:43 Good! you should play it it's so good omg i was NOT prepared for japanese emil's shop!
