Hi, I'm German and I can confirm, that it's German kitchen cabinet. But we refer to it as 'Gelsenkirchener Barock'. It's typical for the Ruhr area. The big storage containers are for sugar (as a kid you could climb this type of cabinet easily and put your finger into it. Maybe that's the reason this one has a door.) The others are four flour and grains. Later my grandma used it for noodles and rice. The small ones are for salt and herbs or for dry peas and lenses. I still have this cabinet 6 moves and various colours later. Love it and I haven't painted the inside so it still smells like the kitchen of my grandma.

What a cherished memory! I took a few sentimental items from my Gram’s house after she passed and put them in a big plastic bin. Years later I can open that bin and it still smells like her house-2008. 😢😊

That burl wood vase is so powerful it doesn’t need a branch or flowers. It commands attention all on its own. Thanks for another great video!

Laura- I am very certain this is a 1930’s German “Schrank” (Americans just slaughter this German word!!!). Schrank is correct. It’s almost Biedermeier style, but clearly Deco. It’s a great piece and you got a amazing deal.
@pigoff123
@pigoff123 7 месяцев назад
I agree. I had one in Germany in my kitchen.
@patriciafay-magiera1304

I agree. Married and living in Germany for 30 years, the wooden Schrankwand was a typical feature in a "living room" in an apartment. It contained all the precious china and crystal, table linens and even had a closet side for clothes. The kitchens were just that, along with coal stove which heated the apartment. The living room had to act as the dining room, as well. This one is bigger, more elegent and contains the unusual glass containers.
@lorihutton9535
@lorihutton9535 7 месяцев назад
Why does it lock? I figured it a bar type cabinet, then I thought about those glass ( she called them ) drawers. What are those? I have never saw this furniture before anywhere. Stunning it is in great condition.
@user-lo6dh8jx7v
@user-lo6dh8jx7v 7 месяцев назад
It's German but not a 'Schrankwand'. A Schrankwand is only to find in the living room or the bedroom. It means a wall completely covered with a wardrobe. Mostly multiple wardrobe in different variations put together or custom made to cover a haul wall. Multifunctionell. If you translate Schrankwand by words would be 'wardrobe wall'. This is a kitchen cabinet but today it's often used in living rooms because it's a nice peace of furniture.
@eagleheads1221
@eagleheads1221 7 месяцев назад
@@user-lo6dh8jx7vSchrank simply means cabinet in German, and yes you are correct there are different types and functions. My Oma had a full wall wardrobe and she had a more traditional one in her living-room. The living room Schrank was set up for afternoon tea and coffee, photo albums, table linens. I have fond memories. This one is specifically a Küchenschrank. It’s a more old fashioned piece set up for kitchens of yesteryear. It would have been used in a larger more affluent household.

I think the burl vase would look good either empty or possibly with something like a short spray of ornamental Meadow Foxtail. I imagine it drooping and almost mimicking the curve of the vase top. I would bind the grass and put some kind of spacer to keep it centered in the hole. That hutch is swoon worthy! My heart now yearns to be so blessed to find another at that incredible price! Congratulations!!! I really am in awe of all of the glass inserts and keys still being with it. You know that was cherished by its previous caretaker. I wish it could tell us its story. ❤

I am sure that this is a German hutch. Mein German grandmother had one similar to yours. The glass 'containers' are not scoops, they were used to store, sugar, flour and spices. Great find Laura!!! :)
@eagleheads1221
@eagleheads1221 7 месяцев назад
Agree. It’s very German to my eye. Something my Oma would have had in her kitchen in Germany.
@MissDickens
@MissDickens 7 месяцев назад
I thought the glass inserts would be similar to modern-day canisters, too. I think people then used staple ingredients much quicker than nowadays because they made fresh, unprocessed foods daily.
@t.t.6861
@t.t.6861 7 месяцев назад
... and to store also open bought other dry goods as (unpackaged) lentils, rice and semolina in the containers, also. At least my german grandmother, born 1901, did. I think it is a very grand kitchen closet/cabinet, my grandmother's was white. Oh... and Schrank is just the german word for closet or cabinet.
@jeannineschouten281
@jeannineschouten281 7 месяцев назад
Not certain it is German. My oma had one too and is from the Netherlands. For flour, coffee, rice, sugar, salt etc. It was in the kitchen and it contained also plates and bowls etc.
@sonjakirchdorfer6838
@sonjakirchdorfer6838 7 месяцев назад
Hi Laura, I also think it's a German buffet. The glasses are used to store flour, sugar ect. as mentioned here in the comments. Also my "Oma" grandma had a very similar one and she put out the ingredients of the glass stores to bake her special "OMA Kuchen" - Grandma Cake ;-)

I liked the branch in the vase. Both the branch and the vase were nice and big and that island kind of needs something nice and big because it’s massive. And the combination of the natural texture of the vase against that countertop is just *chef’s kiss*.
@persiphonehellecat

I think the branch should be shorter but not so short that the vase overpowers the branch. Also maybe shorten the branch at the base so it goes all the way down into the liner.

We have those kind of glass drawers in old Swedish shelfs. They were often located underneath the top cabinets in old kitchens, but also as singular shelfs with those in it. The glass drawers are not scoops. They are used to store flour, grains, sugar etc that you easily can pour from the pointy part. Great find!

I believe your hutch is German. It's the equivalent of a Hoosier cabinet for the kitchen. This was, essentially, the kitchen in an apartment or small house. You'd store your dried, grains, flour, sugar in the glass scoops. All your dry goods would be stored in here along with some everyday dishes, kitchen tools, pots & pans. Some refer to it as a "schrank" I believe.

Your studio is fantastic. This one is really coming together. The vase, if I had it, would be used for many occasions and moods. First, I can see something Halloween style in it. Then, you could use it for flowers or even a candle with a drip protector. Imagination is the only limit. The German cabinet is beautiful. I've never seen anything like it. Lucky you!

I am voting for greenery in the burlwood vase. Sorry Jesse. Im with Laura on this one. The vase is stunning but really comes to life with the greenery, you can just cut it abit shorter and trim the leaves abit for shape. You can move the vase out of they way when you are using the space but when you are not using it, the vase elevates the kitchen space. It is a piece of art. Well done. Next the hutch is incredible. Another incredible find, and the square table. 🎉

I'm a total sucker for a beautiful hutch! Ive acrually recently gotten two GORGEOUS ones for FREE! One is a Spanish piece from the 60s and the other was a handmade art deco piece from thr 30s! 😍🥰

That is one gorgeous cabinet! I would take that cabinet over a new one any day. You could put some type of wallpaper inside you hutch!

The brass lamp is so amazing, even with that lamp shade

I love the large wooden vase. How about putting pampas grass in it? Also love the wooden cabinet, the glass scoops are amazing.

The Burlwood vase would look spectacular on the shelf behind in place of the tall candle holder. You could put branches in it or not

For the vase: a cascading succulent or trailing tropical. Look at the Balsam hill Succulent Harvest Pumpkin Centerpiece…

Love the end interaction over the vase, I think a cutting that cascades down over it not more than say a third way down.
