In Filipino cuisine, our local version of chow mein is called "pancit canton" albeit heavily adjusted to the Filipino palate", since these dishes had arrived here centuries ago. They probably just called it chow mein in their menu because people over there are way more familiar with this term, rather than "pancit canton".

You don't know how to eat filipino food because filipino food is always eaten in combination.You should put rice,beef,egg all together and put it in your mouth.

it is not onion mate, it is crispy garlic bits. we eat them meat with rice and egg all at the same time that is why you are given a spoon and not a knife. so best way to eat it is get a bit of everything on the spoon and straight to your mouth.:) tapa is best when dipped in spiced vinegar! :)
@pcsixty6
@pcsixty6 2 года назад
yup. the spoon and fork is authentic. the way we Filipinos eat the silog meal is to mix the egg into the garlic rice and then get a piece of meat and scoop it up with the spoon. The fork is just used mostly to shovel the rice into the spoon or hold the meat if we want to cut it with the spoon to a smaller piece.

its like a British heavy breakfast but instead of beans we put rice on it, those pork tocino and beef tapa always come with vinegar, we dip the tocino and tapa on the vinegar especially with the tocino that is sweet and dip it on the sour taste of the vinegar, and we mix and eat the tocino or tapa together with rice in one bite, for me personally I also pour the vinegar on my garlic rice, Filipino food is always comes with vinegar, soy sauce, patis (fish sauce), bagoong “ba-go-ong” (fermented fish or shrimp paste) and calamansi (small version of lime only available in the Philippines) as condiments, but if we’re outside the Philippines we just use lemon. And in the Philippines, Filipinos only use spoon and fork while eating because all our dishes comes with rice and soup (broth style soup) and our meat dishes are already cut in small pieces before we cook it, so no need to use a knife because our food is always already cut in pieces, and it doesn’t make sense for us scooping rice and some soup while using only a fork and a knife…and we Filipinos have this hidden talent that we can cut our food just only using a spoon and fork if we still need to cut our food into a much small piece! LOL

Adam, that's a very good start on learning about Filipino cuisine. Check out the Wikipedia article on it. It will answer many of your questions then you can start enjoying the different flavor combinations and counterpoints after you learn which dipping sauce or condiment goes well with different dishes. Try them with and without the condiments to check out the range of flavors. Keep enjoying.

With Filipino dishes, you should always ask if it comes with condiments (or ask what condiment is best for it). For the tapa/tocino it would be flavored vinegar but I prefer the simpler one than the one you had lol. Then you mix the eggs with the garlic fried rice (but it's up to you). Thank you for trying. Glad you enjoyed!

Those plate with a Fried Egg are just Commercial. In Malaysia such dish with a boiled egg exist and its cultural. But the Tapsilog meals of the Philippines is just poverty on a plate. Now, it is celebrated as if it was cultural. Its just Breakfast food, which the Filipinos are made to eat for Lunch and Dinner. The Philippines have more to showcase than Sad Breakfast Food, the most mediocre in the region.
