This is my first time ever using traction spikes for winter running. I got a pair of Kahtoola EXOspikes and NANOspikes and in this video I’ll give you my first impressions.

Thanks for the comparison. I have the nano's which serve me well for suburban and old converted rail trails. I was out in 4cm of fresh snow very early this a.m. and the Nano's were just fine. My toe kept wanting to slip off towards the end of my run, which is a first. Thought that was odd. We are having a dry winter here in the St-Lawrence River Valley. Nice to see the EXOspikes reviewed.

Jen and I regularly use the NANOspikes when dropping into the Grand Canyon in the winter. I'm always impressed with how well they work.

what is the terrain like for that? Is it flat dirt path with steps or mixed?

They’re actually almost the exact same weight. I just got both as well. Large nanos are 8.4 oz/pair, XL exos are 8.7 oz/pair. I agree with your points though and great review. I got the nanos for mixed flat road/ice over trail runners and exos for trails over boots. Then went nuts and also got the micro spikes for more technical trails. Those are another level of traction, but you wouldn’t want to use them on bare roads.

this is very interesting about the weight! They do feel bulkier to me, tho, and its just the design differences. The exos still have an advantage on chunky ice. I also have a pair of micro's and want to test them up in the mountains soon!

Thank you for this! This is the review I was looking for. I only run on roads and was debating upgrading from the nano to the exo. Did you try running on bare road in the exos?

thanks for watching. yes I did and the exos are more noticeable with each step on flat road. You can probably stick with the nanos.

screw add on traction. get icebug studded shoes or saloman spikecross and sealskins socks and gaiters

around here in Northern AZ it doesn't stay frozen for long and turns mixed very quickly after winter storms so I'd prefer something I can easily slip on and off rather than be committed to spiked shoes.
