Hello Everyone!
As some of you may know, I just finished my first year teaching! I finally decided to sit down and film a first year experience video and tell you some things I felt college didn't teach me about teaching. I know everyone's experiences teaching in the classroom (and in college) are different. These are just my thoughts and opinions on my first year. I hope you can relate to some of these things or use this to help better prepare for your first year. Enjoy!
xoxo,
Becky

I’m so glad you made this video. There are so many new teachers whom I know feel the same way. I’ve been teaching for 20+ years and can honestly say you never stop learning new things. But all those things you mentioned are extremely important to have training on in order to be able to teach a class of 20 or more different types of students. And it is definitely true that the pandemic brought on a whole new set of emotional and behavioral issues that as general ed. teachers we don’t have training in to implement appropriate interventions. Glad to hear you have learned to set boundaries. We need more caring teachers like you to stick around. Thanks for sharing your experiences.😊

Teaching is so hard. I’m almost 40. I wish I could say it gets easier but it doesn’t really. It gets different and you get more comfortable but it doesn’t necessarily get easier. I will say that some classes are better than others.

Thank you for sharing this! I totally agree with you. As a first year teacher, it is so difficult to learn all the things. I am feeling overwhelmed and trying to find my way with everything. I am a first year special education teacher. I have a Primary (grades 1-3) ID unit classroom. I just graduated with my alternative teaching license, so I did not go the traditional college route, so this is all new to me. I find it really hard to learn how to progress monitor student goals, and how to plan for 3 different grade level of students on all different levels. I am finally finding my way, but it has taken a lot of work.

Hi there Amanda! Kuddos to you for teaching special education! I am in year 9 and just now getting the feel for things. I, too, teach multiple grades in a self-contained sp.ed room in a high poverty, high crime area. I've collected a ton of resources and materials that I would be happy to share with you. Progress monitoring is NOT easy but can be done efficiently. Send me a message and I can give you some resources if you still need them!

Girl are you explaining my year right now?! This was/is my first year and I am in 1st grade. It was SOOO hard. So much physical violence!! I feel like such a failure. I am going to a new school next year, but I was constantly hit, kicked, my hair was pulled, I was choked. My kids hurt each other so much. It is draining and sooo sad.

This is my 10th year of teaching and I have had many types of challenging behaviors throughout the years! "The First Days of School" by Harry and Rosemary Wong has been the best resource for me since my first year of teaching. They were the keynote speakers for my orientation and I learned so much about how to start each school year off right. I reread it every year to refresh me on how to build those relationships out the gate, so that my 1st weeks of school are spent teaching my expectations. Best book ever!

My first year was very difficult. I cried most nights, experiencing anger, bullying, overworking my brain, etc. That was 19 years ago. Your struggles happen with new teachers and veteran teachers every year. Realizing that you need to create balance between work hours and home life is key. I’m happy to hear you are aware and making that happen. Did you have a mentor? I am going to address these issues to my mentees so that they know to ask questions and seek help from colleagues and administration.

I did have a mentor who was great! There were just some things I didn’t realize were so out of the ordinary so it took me a while to reach out to her and other staff with concerns.

I'm so sorry your first year was so tough. That's definitely not normal and not what should happen in a classroom. Every year is so drastically different, you never know what you're going to get! Lol. I'm glad you are excited and sticking it out this next year :)

Hang in there! Last year was one of my toughest years and I have been teaching for 37 years. I do believe they are the result of the COVID experience which was very little socialization. I was wondering if you were assigned a mentor teacher. In our district the mentor teacher is the person you can go to for the answers to some of your questions. I am very lucky to have Coworkers that listen and share. I hope you have that too. As teachers we never stop learning. If we think there's nothing more to learn it's time to get out of teaching. Good luck this year. I enjoy watching your videos.

I spent a lot of my first year crying. I loved teaching but there were so many hard things about teaching. I quit after 3 years and became a nurse. I never regretted leaving the classroom. It was too much stress. I enjoy watching teaching videos tho!

So much of teaching is learn as you go. Every year there is something different you have to learn from. Covid has also had a negative effect on the classroom.

I have often looked back on my teacher prep classes (9th yr teacher) and felt they really didn't teach me very much. It was almost like the same 3 course "types" over and over again. I could tell you all about Blooms and Maslow, which is great, but they were covered in almost every course. Nothing particularly practical was provided.

The same happens with disability, college does not prepare you like they should.
