Hey MD, my best guess based on my experiences and from what i can see ...your female ram looks like it has recently laid eggs and likely the male ate them, she looks pretty angry and healthy (usually the case when their eggs are taken or eaten), just lacking the girth which often lasts a couple days after spawning 👍

Hearing that excitement in your voice is awesome! I remember how excited I was about thirty years ago when I had my first successful broods of Flag and Rainbow Cichlids. It is so amazing to watch. It also gives you a fantastic sense of accomplishment knowing you created an environment in which your little fishy friends find good enough to raise their own family. Cheers!

For the rams, maybe give them an area with a flat rock and more plants around it for cover to feel more secure to lay eggs. They probably don't feel safe because of the other fish and have no area they can sorta hide away like the kribs have.
@PaulZyCZ
@PaulZyCZ 3 года назад
It may not be enough even so. My Ram pair laid eggs, cared for them... but after 3 days nothing came out of it. I don't know if they were stressed from other fish (it seemed their rock was hidden enough) or they were just too young.

Kribensis are excellent parents. Kribensis breed so often. So be prepared to take fry out of the tank when they start to mate again. When I used to breed Kribs, they would breed pretty much every 1 to 2 months. They breed like crazy.

With the Ram I would bump the temp to 84 degrees and make sure mom has a place to hide from dad. If they breed they will get aggressive even to each other. They will push the sand and lay in it but they do prefer a flat spot. Also they look young and will need more time to grow before breeding. It is also easier to pair off if you have 2-3 females to 1 male. Loving the vids. Keep them coming and thank you for taking the time and posting

Kribs are one of (if not my most) favorite fish. I've bred them several times and its so mcuh fun to see the typical big cichlid behaviour in a small fish. If you disturb them, they may end up eating the fry.

Good job breeding these fish MD! My Blue Rams just gave me a surprise, I didn't really expect them to breed mainly because I did an aquascape for the fish to look good in it obviously. The thing I noticed is they like to lay there eggs on a rock which has medium sized plants growing on the edges. I hope it works for yours too. Good luck.

Those Krib's look great! With the Rams, it could be that you just need to keep the female on the meds a little longer. Internal parasites can take awhile to get rid of, and a week probably wasn't enough time. Obviously, if she's sick or has a sunken belly she's not producing eggs yet, so she's just not ready to breed. I think once you get her health squared away things will start to happen. I would put her back in the other tank while you treat the parasites for another week or two.

Wonderful shots. Looking great. I have also been breeding Kribs for a while and keep taking them down to the local fish shop as I have too many. Hi MD, my Kribs have just had their third batch of young... They tend to stay in the nest for the first 48hrs, and then tend to follow mum & dad around the aquarium. If you watch carefully, any that go adrift, mum or dad scoop them up in their mouths and take them back to the main group - I was lucky enough to video them doing this.

For the rams i would suggest to get the ember tetras out. they are much smaller, and harder to fend off. Also a "protected" area to spawn would be nice for them. A broken pot around a slate rock could work (the pot would function as a "wall" and provide some form of protection. My german blue rams decided my vallisneria jungle provided enough cover, dug out the centre right by the glass and they spawned in a hole they dug, so a flat surface is not a must. Unfortunately they were hungry, so the moment i fed the tank my rams went to eat, and my corydoras swept the area clean in seconds.. Good luck!

My German Blue Rams dug a small pit in my Flourite Black substrate when they bred. I have a short video showing it in my channel if you want to see it. It's a really neat process. Is your female eating alright? Try feeding frozen bloodworms if she isn't. Maybe even some boiled and shelled peas for fiber in case she's constipated and not eating. I hope she's alright and you get babies soon! Mouth Brooders are so cool!

My Ram pair laid eggs, but after 3 days nothing remained (the male was also quite angry at the female). :-/ Fed them frozen bloodworms and other frozen food every second day, kept the temperature up (27 °C is a normal temperature for them). There is a lot of flat rocks and hidden places which are a must (instead of a flat rock, Echinodorus works as well). Fresh soft water helps too. The signs are: full (under)belly of the female, visible oviparium (or how's that called), pair being aggresive to other fish.

With the rams, you need to put in half a ceramic pot. As for the Kribs, if they are anything like my apisto's, they lay the eggs, 3-5 days later they hatch into wrigglers. Then they unstick a day or two later from the surface that they are on and start swimming. If you check out Marks Aquatics, I think he has bred both Kribs and Rams and has videos on breeding them. Although the Kribs just seem to go for it.

The color pop on the kribs are beautiful. And to see new life it so great, as the miracle of life blooms before your eyes. It exciting and mysterious all at the same time. Yet as a aquarist we are responsible for taking care of that life since we put them in water boxes. The parents will do what they need to do naturally that in it self is a mystery. How do they know what to do instinct yes but who does that happen. It still a mystery, nevertheless they require our help to provide the necessary environment to reproduce successfully, like food, water quality, shelter, and temperature to replicate what these fish require that they would find in their natural habitat, and when we do that the miracle if life blossoms and reproduces itself. Good job MD you accomplished your goal. I believe after that happens it encourages us as fish keepers to do a better job of finding ways to make it happen for the rest of our fish. We become a good shepherd but it also impacts our daily walk with our lives. As the needs to succeed in life for us and all God's creatures is good food good water, safe shelter, good care and respectful attitude toward life and others with those parameters met life will flourish and grow. Congratulations of your baby fish as what you did allowed the fish to do what they were meant to do and that it to live, grow, to be fruitful and multiple. Thus the cycle of life is complete and self fulfilling. Thanks for sharing.

My problem with kribs is that they are such good parents that even in a full community tank there is a good chance of a lot of babies surviving. For me the only thing that would successfully prey on the young and cut their numbers significantly were older generations of kribs (or other similar bottom dwelling cichlids...can check my videos for young Steatocranus hunting baby kribs). But super fun to experience this and watch them care for them. If I remember correctly by the time they are free swimming and come out of their cave they are already almost a week old.
