MY FISHING BOAT SANK IN THE CANAL

Buying a boat was always on my bucket list, cruising down the rivers and canals enjoying the glorious summer weather seemed like my idea of pleasure. Despite having some great adventures on the Kingfisher, for the most part owning a boat has been a total stress. That aside I still wanted to make the most out of having a boat, so as June the 16th came around I set out to spend a weekend fishing with a close friend. Upon arriving we noticed a minor issue THE BOAT HAD SANK.

Owned boats for over 25 years. Always towed them or put into dry storage. it’s just not viable to leave them moored for weeks unsupervised. Sorry you learned the hard way.

If ever happens again, keep the outboard in water. Get a dustbin and fill with water and put engine side down. Do not allow any oxidisation, trust me the mechanic will thank you for making his job a LOT easier to get it running again.

My RIB sank last year in a storm with a Honda BF20 on it, the davits snapped off the boat and the swim platform battered the RIB and engine, smashed off the cam wheel and ripped the electrics. Even though I have no experience of engines I flushed the engine, re built what I could see was damaged and it's now running better than ever so it can be done, definitely worth a try!

I feel for you mate. Best part of 40 years ago now I had a small boat for fishing. Took it down the creek after winter and launched it. Towed the trailer to the yard, walked back to the slip and there it was, gone! All my tackle floating across the creek. Bloody thing had gone straight down. Had to wait for the tide to go down to get it back! One of the trailer rollers had punched a hole in it.

An outboard motor in sweet water is not a big problem as long as you get at it right after you get it above water. Take the plugs out and dry start to get rid of the water in the cylinders and crank case (two stroke). Empty the carburator bowls and check for spark. If there is spark just try to start it and see if it will run. If so let it run for a longer period to make sure it will be hot and all mechanics will dry out. Spray some wd40 maybe and wipe of the excess. My coussin had a boat that once sunk. We lifted it on 3 points just enough to get the gunnels above water. Put in the electric pump and waited. Then went for the outboard (after a week of so on the bottom) and within an hour we had it up and running.

When i owned boats i had a swinging mooring in chichester harbour that was very exposed.. I fitted an automatic electric bilge pump and checked the boat every two weeks,not ideal as i was an hour away then! I owned a boat same as yours in the 1980s, with such a huge cockpit area soon as it rains it becomes a bathtub! Might be worth placing piece of timber from the transom ,to the cabin roof and lash the tarpaulin tight so water cant pool . Unfortunately your mooring there is easily accessible to anyone,may be worth considering a move?

What might work is to fit a LoRa light-detector. These are diy electronics which are designed to handle a sensor alert, and transmit it a hundred miles or so. Not video, but all you need is a water detector in the bottom and a light-sensor in a bit which never gets light, At the far end, a siren to tell you all is not well.

Pull the sparkplugs and air box, turn it over by hand to clear the water out of the cylinders, drain the oil and fill with fresh oil, fresh fuel, spray the engine down with wd40 and clean all the electrical connections/spray some contact cleaner into them. Should fire up, we had jetskis and engines sit underwater / with water in them plenty times and got them going again. When ye get it running run it a bit and then do another oil change and you should be fine.

Hi Jacob, so many questions over this. Are you on a private mooring or a CRT 14 day or less mooring it you are paying I would have thought the license holder would have been on to you to inform you your boat was sinking. Have you thought about getting a trickle Solar Charger and a 12v battery connected to an automatic bilge pump to keep levels down inside while you are away?
@04Corolla
@04Corolla 10 месяцев назад
i work in a marina, looks like they didnt have shore power so the battery died and the bilge pump stopped working. It also seems like it was down there for at least a few days and at most a month or 2. Sorry to say it but its a write off, gonna cost around 5k on just the engine side once everything is all said and done. My advice: dispose of boat and buy another. Please for the love of god check on it atleast weekly. If you leave a boat floating and dont check on it for a good while, dont expect it to still be floating

Jacob Jacob, what the hell? You have earned a whole new level of respect from me for your unbelievably calm response to this soul destroying event. I would have completely flipped out without doubt. Times of crisis can either build character or destroy you. Lessons to learn? Well you did the right thing obviously having insurance. But trusting one or more living nearby with your phone number so that they can keep an eye on things for you and inform you quickly of vandalism is the only thing maybe you could have done a bit better maybe. Captain hindsight talking. I owned a lake in France for over 10 years and having those local eyes watching over your property proved vital when I too suffered the devastation of thieves breaking in. In my case though it was just a bungalow and at least it couldn’t sink after the event……sorry that was uncalled for. We live and learn. But do you have a little of your positive mental attitude (PMA) spare please, I could do with some of that. Through this incident and your response to it I have to say you have won a new fan, when before I could find “over enthusiasm” a little bit off putting and exhausting to be honest. Nice to see a fellow angler from the North West show what tougher stuff we are made of! Respect!❤

@@jacoblondoncarper4857 Just thinking Jacob, is there such a thing as an auto bilge pump which comes on sensing water level rising inside the cabin? I guess the problem is any battery wouldn’t last for long. A wi fi operated security cam you could access on the boat to make sure it’s OK after heavy rainfall. Naive questions I bet, but if you can avoid such a “stress dump” again anything is worth considering. Anyway I hope it didn’t delay your adventures too much!
