This is a side note but you always drop these random stories and I am always like what is your life! Quaker beginnings, parents that seem so beautifully intriguing, an extraordinary childhood, masquerade balls, living in France, actor, artist in Italy, writer's colony, designer, entrepreneur, tango. It just seems a life filled with so much adventure, passion, and exploration. I would love to hear you speak on your life! You're such a refreshing source of inspiration for me.

Okay. When you post fashion content, it’s already a national holiday in my book. And then right away you finally tell us more about your Theatre days 😍 I mean it’s too much happiness for me handle. I have a similar approach to fashion, prioritizing “forever” pieces, etc. and I *also* did avant-garde theatre - about fifteen years ago for me, but pretty close. I’m only on piece 1, but I couldn’t stop myself from going ahead and commenting.

I loved this video! Second hand is my jam, back when I was going outside I used to visit local thrift stores every week. As is so often the case I think the biggest gift of your videos is hearing you talk about what your belongings mean to you. Many of your insights are useful to straight up translate into ones own life, but I feel like I also develop the skill to similarly analyse my relationship with my stuff. During the year that I have followed you it has really helped me curate my collection, my aesthetic and my shopping habits. Also I just have a great interest in material culture and how we shape and are shaped by our stuff in general. Your channel is among the best if not the best for exploring this that I have found so I am very happy to be subscribed to you! Since a significant percentage of my belongings are second hand I have many great finds, but one that sticks out for me is my fall coat. It is a forest green vintage loden coat with a short hooded cape. I found it in pretty bad condition and had to spend a week mending it, and it is clear that it has been mended before. But it was so worth it and I love it so much. It is wearably epic, and I feel like the previous love adds something special, as if I have gotten the honor of continuing the story of this beautiful piece. It really feels magical to me in a way I cant fully explain.

You found beautiful, unique pieces that look amazing on you! I LOVE that you are encouraging people to shop secondhand since it's so much more sustainable, saves money and the results are more rewarding and interesting! Except for underthings & socks, I've exclusively purchased used/secondhand/thrift/vintage clothes for the past few years! I haven't been as successful with shoes though. I have at least three vintage dresses that are my classic go-to pieces for almost any occasion--they can go casual or fancy depending on shoes and accessories! I hope you film more content like this!

My daughter (almost 20) has always been difficult to fit. She’s tiny 5’1.5” but super busty with a tiny waist and curves. I don’t want to shop in the overpriced petites section of department stores, which are often NOT her demographic style wise, AND spend a small fortune on tailoring so second hand shopping is a godsend. She can try on EVERYTHING and find the perfect fitting designer jeans and dresses for a fraction of retail pricing, offsetting some of those still needed tailoring costs. I think the MOST enjoyable thing about shopping second hand is the tremendous variety available in one place. Not having one’s style dictated by the season or current trends allows for much more individual creativity and confidence. Thank you for sharing and (all the pieces, but...) that silk dress - oh my goodness!

I love how those first two dresses are the perfect forever pieces but the reasons are in such juxtaposition! The first being somewhat masculine, demure, neutral and tailored and the other flowy, sensual sin a much more statement colour! Both pieces suit you phenomenally! I’m amazed you can have a pair of shoes as forever shoes, it’s one of item clothing I feel always starts to feel worn and raggedy with consistent wear.... (although having said that my grungy, black lace up stomper heeled boots are one piece that have escaped that as they almost look more perfect the more they are worn..) So awesome to see ‘the blouse’ in a video again, it’s like seeing an old friend! (It’s was also nice to see Julene again. ) What a fantastic video I loved every bit of it! It’s definitely making me reflect on what pieces have been in my wardrobe for more than 5-10 years... some of which are actually suprising!💕👌🏼❤️

Find a good cobbler / Shoe repair person. I have a pair of leather boots that I have had re-heeled at least 7 or 8 times. Most recently the place I took it to glued down a tear in the leather (I am hard on my shoes). They look almost new! I am dreading re-soling them as that will be expensive but we are getting close to that after a decade of wear.

I practice modest dress, and the way you describe that first piece (would 1000% wear) is how I feel about most of my clothing and my dresses in particular, which I've had to dig up from more obscure places--most of my clothes work for lots of different weather, are statement-y but can be dressed up or down, and I can feel good about my body in my own way.

One of the reasons wy this video is tugging at my heart strings, is for about a year/year and a half, when I took a break from practicing law, I ran a little business on eBay called recycled living, and I curated collections of clothes for women of non-typical mass market sizes (petite, plus, tall, very small) based largely on about five women in my brain. And while I have a few lovely pieces I found for myself and still have (few being relative, but they've endured since 2007, I mostly shopped for other women. I had a lot of repeat customers or people who asked for super specific things. And then I also sold 1950s-70w homewares, because that's another thing I would find and that I sold well. Apparently my women like to live recycled and vintage. I did it because both my parents had passed away (and grandparents to whom I was very close), I wanted time to grieve, I inherited a house (along with my sister) and a little money. I was doing legal volunteer work with kids. This was essentially my tax write off that gave me a lot of things to do everyday. And I bizarrely made money even after the expenses.. Not enough and then I missed practicing law so much, I went back to it. But I strongly believe in used/thrift/vintage clothing as part of my aesthetic, as part of my eco-consciousness (don't get me started on the pesticides in the Gulf), and a way of building a wardrobe that actually fits your long term clothing ideas and is deeply personal to you. It has that thing that makes people see you as well-dressed (in whatever that means to you). It's why I love clothing rental as well for work, because if you want that on trend piece, you can rent it and if you find one that (for you) ticks the boxes of long term use, you are doing a version of thrifting. I obviously haven't shopped in person this year, but if I am ever not working 15 hour days (please let it be soon) I follow a number of ebay shops that get in the kinds of things I like in sizes I wear who have built trust with me and just check in on them, from time to time (they always have strong return policy, most good second hand thrifters do). But while eBay is very different now than it was in 2007-2008, I have such fond memories in my thrifting for others days, and in running that business and in the kinds of things the different 4 or 5 women in my mind wanted. I feel lucky for that year. And for ALL the reasons here.

I love all your videos, including this one, it has really put things into perspective, especially when you talked about trying to recreate the initial emotion and 'magical moment' of having found that one perfect product/colour combination and trying to recreate that feeling through purchasing all the different colours of a certain product, I didn't realize I was doing that until you mentioned it! haha going back to this video in particular, I actually went shopping in second hand stores in Ireland when we were on a family vacation years ago and found the only romper that has ever fit my shape perfectly. Being taller then the average women, I have a hard time finding a romper or jumpsuit that fits my proportions, the one I found has floral patterns, which is something I'm always drawn towards for some reason, it is honestly perfect for me and it is one of the pieces I'm sure to keep for years to come :)

My girlfriends and I do clothing swaps from time to time, or show each other pieces we're decluttering in case there's something the other likes, it has been a method that has refreshed my wardrobe time and time again. I think this was genuinely interesting to see as pieces can contain different feelings or stories that are normally contained within our own lives and no one elses, thus, never shared. My coat collection is about 98% secondhand and stunning in my own opinion, but one piece in particular that brings me pure joy is a Linda Lundstrum navy blue wool and faux fur coat. It was my mothers and she obviously bought it brand new in the 80s when it first came out, and I ended up taking it from her when she was decluttering her own wardrobe; she even still had the matching gloves and boots. Words cannot express how happy that coat makes me, it's a head turner even when I wear it in -35 degree weather when it is at its zenith of use. These days the coats go for $300+ depending on the amount of design work done on the outer satin.

Chloe is a Karl Lagerfeld brand. He was their fashion director in 1972 and 1992 and a lot of the very feminine sensibilities and winks at vintage silhouettes came from him (either directly or in the air). I was fully obssessed with Chloe in the 90s and then again mid-2010s. I think I've seen you dance tango in this dress, yes? On one of your tango channel videos?

I didn't know that about Chloe! And though I've danced in dresses with similar silhouettes, I never actually danced tango in this dress. Tango involves a lot of torsion, I think if I tried to dance in it my torso would twist right out of it, LOL.

This video was an unexpected nostalgia trip for me :) The clip of the theatre piece reminds me of the work I used to do when I had a regular gig in an experimental performance troupe between 2010 and 2015 - we're on indefinite hiatus and I miss it so much :,( Another thing I miss, and hadn't realised how much I missed until this video, is being a small enough clothing size to shop for vintage garments. My favourite finds were a cropped black cashmere Pringle jumper with an amazing 80s silhouette and some incredible Red or Dead turquoise and green striped stiletto ankle boots, both acquired for under £30 whilst performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2004. I used to ride my bike in those heels! Ah, young carefree days of perceived invincibility! I was a UK size 10 back then, and am now a 14-16 with too dumpy a waistline to comfortably fit most clothes, let alone older pieces cut for narrower waists. I do relate enormously to the phenomenon you described of wearing the things that 'best' suit your figure until that feels boring: I spent years accentuating my hourglass figure, but now feel so much cooler in baggy oversized cuts made of super-comfy, breathable materials. The act of wearing what we feel like is so radical, especially for those of us with bodies that are considered more challenging or less desirable. Wonderful video. Thank you :)

This is a lovely video, and it's a joy watching you talk about fashion. However, as someone who has only every existed on the upper limits of straight sizes, and am at the moment firmly in the world of plus sized, this discussion also makes me sad. This is not a world of which I can be a part. Designers do not make OTR in plus sizes. Even in the realm of shoes, I'm a 41/42, and my favourite shoe designer, John Fluevog, has a massive second hand market which keeps prices high. I ADORE the idea of shopping like this, and I would live in antique and vintage clothing if I could. But that isn't an option for me, and a little acknowledgment of the privilege that comes with being straight sized, and consistently sized for an extended period of time, would have made me a little less sad. Still love everything you do.

Loved this video! And that first dress gave me life!! For me the takeaway is that fashion and make up aren’t frivolous. They can be approached with intention and purpose not only in the way they affect how we present ourselves to the world, but how we consume it. Of course this is the whole idea of your channel, but it still is such a fresh message within the beauty/fashion community. I don’t necessarily buy second hand. But I made the commitment to only buy from local designers and locally made fashion (I’m from Colombia). Way more pricy but so much more special pieces. Thank you Hanna for being this reflexive and critical corner of the Internet!

I value these pieces more than the faster fashion that I sometimes indulge it. I also know that it takes the right time and place and mood to find these magical key pieces. I enjoy when fashion is not about trend but instead about something within me. I am forever grateful for the friend who told me to get the glorious 80s body con dress with a huge camel on it that I never would have chosen for myself, and that is now the dress I wear when I want folks to notice me. I delight in the journey of clothes.

Love fashion content! Most of my wardrobe is second hand. My favorite item is probably my Longchamp handbag. It was incredibly inexpensive and it is black with dark chain strap. I can wear with anything, from sweats to dresses. I also save up for second hand pieces, my watches were second hand saved for purchases.

this is a great video!!!! I LOVE buying second hand goods, and I feel like my favorite thing to buy is second hand bags! my favorite second hand purchase I think is probably my manu atelier bag, but I think my favorite second hand item I have is this bag my mom gave me, its super elegant, it looks like a golden seashell, I think my mom has had it for 25 years before I got it and it still looks exquisite!

Very beautiful pieces! I went "uuuu!!" when I saw you with the second dress, absolutely stunning! :D Fun story: I'm not a perfume lover, like almost any would do for me as long as it's not very heavy, but once in my life (7?) years ago I smelled a random perfume in a duty-free and fell in love. That was the (now discontinued) L'Eau de Chloe, and the bow on top of the bottle was the exact same green like your dress. The smell was so delicate and cheerful and elegant like your dress too. I bought it for the last time 2 years ago and I'm using it slooowly, in an attempt to make its life a little longer, as there won't be any more after I finish it, sadly. The only perfume I ever loved.. :)

Yay for second hand shopping and yay for pieces that make us feel amazing I actually worked at a second hand shop for a couple of months and that what was made me devolve the skill I think you have to learn when you start to shop second hand My 3 best purchases are a striped shirt from the little boys section that just fits great and makes me feel so good A black dress that looks like it was made for me And a lace top that I found almost without effort that goes with so many occasions and cost just 3$ I also have a lot of pieces in my wardrobe form my grandmothers and aunt ,some of them were made long before I was born.

Wow, I adore that first dress. Vintage is everything. Most of my best shoes including clogs, leather sandals and boots, I have bought second hand on poshmark and ebay and I have had stellar luck with it. Very little wear, great value for the quality. I often repaint or redye them if they aren't my ideal aesthetic to begin with. Ugh second hand is my jam. Ulla is the inspiration for much of my me made closet. 🙌🏾

The Eric Michael shoes were a great tip. I've been looking for a cork sole sandal with a bit of height that also had adjustment buckles across the toes and ankle and they had one! They weren't insanely expensive either. I collect vintage clothes and have always tried to wear as much vintage as possible in my daily life. Over the years I've made some amazing finds. Just for sheer amazing "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND THIS" was finding a dress on Ebay that was IDENTICAL to one wore by Eva Marie Saint in North By Northwest. The piece was from Bergdorf Goodman originally and is a famous New Look designer. The timing was amazing too because I found it just before I had to go to a destination wedding AND the Cary Grant convention being held in the same hotel where some of NxNW was filmed. It was less than $300 which is crazy given that it's couture, 70s years old and in pristine condition.

Not secondhand, but I bought a Pierre Cardin wool coat for half price in 1988, $350 which was a lot for me but I had just gotten a $8000 salary bump by changing jobs. Never spent so much on a coat. 10 years later a lady complimented me on my coat, I said it's 10 years old, she said "Doesn't matter". I still own that coat. And I didn't know this at the time, but that coat was in the movie Working Girl. I was stunned when I recognized it, years later. I'm too heavy for it now. I'd like it to go to a good home. But no one wears wool coats anymore.

So many gems😍. When I lived in Columbus many years ago there was a second hand clothing shop called Rag-O-Rama. I found so many beautiful, intriguing pieces there. One was a deep, almost maroon, red dress that had the most unique texture. Describing it with words cannot do it justice. Whenever I wore it everyone wanted to touch it. I loved my red dress to bits❤️. Another favorite was a t shirt that simply read “I know I’m beautiful, tell me I’m efficient”. The text was that kind of shiny/multicolored/rubber-like material with a hint of sparkle. But not loud or bright. Whenever I wore it someone always started a conversation about it. There was always that person who wanted to analyze it to death, lol. But that dress... Thanks for sharing your gems, chickadee🍃🌸

OMG that blouse is beautiful. An outfit maker. Love the curated wardrobe concept. I have too much and often multiples of an item. I've been paring down forever, but I've never curated. This is different and I'm learning a lot. My mother was a clothes horse too, she's 86, lost interest in life 4 years ago, and there's clothing everywhere in her place, things she'll never again wear. Her mind is fine but her interest in grooming is gone. In a way I think her humongous wardrobe was from trying to find her SELF but she gave up. This video gave me a life lesson. Thank you.

Late to the party, and I loved reading all the comments. I have wardrobes for two different people -- "office" me is the same plain knit slacks (black or gray) and navy, gray or burgundy on top (sweaters or blouses depending on the season), no patterns, it's easy, it's a uniform. "Real" me is I think entirely thrift store/secondhand online finds, some I've had for 30+ years, "riot of color" seems to be my shade. Beautiful silks, cotton kurtis in summer, kimonos as jackets, vintage dresses, you get the idea, and I'm petite and the right shape for a lot of vintage. As the pandemic has worn on, "real" me keeps showing up for work calls on Zoom -- hey, if they can wear hoodies I can wear vintage Pucci or my 1940s slip-dresses.

My best second hand find was a pair of Christian Louboutin purple python platform pumps. They originally retailed for almost $1,400 and I got mine for $350. I’d been dreaming of owning a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps for over 10 years but could never afford a brand new pair. These fit me perfectly and are in my favorite color, purple. They are truly a forever piece. Even if I rarely wear them, I love looking at them.

Very interesting video. I love shopping second hand. My best purchase was a pair of loose pants in brown animal print by an English firm called Wallis. As I come from England I knew that firm. I bought them abroad. I also find it very hard to find pants and can’t wear pants with zips or buttons. I have to wear high waisted pants with elastic waists. It’s lucky that I like loose pants. Thanks for the interesting video.

The alliance of cute and comfy shoes is the best thing ever. Chunky high heels ftw. Edit: oooh, my favourite second hand pieces...i'm going to include the things my mother passed down to me because of various reasons, still counts as second hand right ? 😫 - an almost clutch sized green leather bag from a small designer. It's small but my essentials fit it, it's amazingly cute and fits with almost my whole wardrobe - a pair of black leather ankle boots with a chunky high heel and laced at the back. Comfortable and sexy - a pair of flared high waisted linen shorts with vertical stripes. I have finally discovered high waisted things and shall never go back. (It also has a great cut and covers ALL of my butt, which is a rare thing with womens' shorts 🙄) Going to stop there, and if you've come this far, have an amazing day 😁

You talking about your long torso 😂 That is so me, I'm only 5'7" but all my height is in my torso. I'm also an hourglass shape so finding pants that fit seems generally a more Labor intensive process than it should be. My best thrift find is hard to pin down but my 80s vintage lacquered cane (and bright orange) bag is up the top as is some gold loafers I bought recently that opened up a whole wide world of masculine styling I never thought I could pull off (because of my "feminine" features 😒😒)

This is an old video but if you are still reading comments on these, just want to say, you have great taste. You probably know by now that Ulla Johnson has a "pre-loved" sales site with what look like good prices to me. About that first dress, I don't know that specific dress but given that you bought it in Belgium, I think it has a distinct Belgian designer vibe--like Dries van Noten or Ann Demeulemeester. I think it is a glorious dress and wouldn't be surprised if that's its background.

My wardrobe is mostly second hand. I love thrifting. My wedding dress is a second hand two piece prom dress in the palest periwinkle. My favorite date night shoes are faux leather zip up stiletto ankle boots I call them my witchy boots because they have a pointed toe. My latest find is a empire waisted v neck blouse with a brown "versace" style chain print. My winter coat that isn't fashionable at all but is warm and goes from fall to spring was 25 bucks 10 years ago--it's been through hell and still works. My biggest score was when a lady decluttered her closet and I got 6 barely worn Layne Bryant tops for under 40 bucks.

I just don’t know how to wear “forever pieces,” because when I wear something that’s “out of style,” I don’t feel like people will look at it and think I’m wearing it because that’s *my* style, they’ll just think I’m out of the loop and don’t care about fashion. 😞

I wonder if that Chloe dress is from when Karl Lagerfeld was designing for them! That is truly a once in a lifetime vintage find. I used to do more thrift shopping when I was younger. The takeaway for me is that shopping second hand is a skill that we can get better at - see how you bought the shoes and the blouse. As these are your five best what isn't being said is that there are things you bought second hand that didn't work out, as well as many shopping trips where nothing was bought because nothing made sense to buy. I often need to remind myself of this because it often only feels worth my time if I walk out of a shop with a bag. My best second hand purchase is a black silk evening dress from Ralph Lauren, I found it at a Amvets for $16 in the time leading up to a cruise when I needed a long gown for the formal nights. Honorable mention go to: my bright pink Ugg rain boots, a J. Crew button down shirt with polka dots and anchors on it, a navy wool Gap cardigan that I've mended it's so good, and a burgundy Ann Taylor cashmere sweater.

Really enjoyed this vid and your individual item breadowns. Beautiful dresses. Such great finds and they suit you so well, as do the trousers. May i ask, is your Aviation tracksuit in Olive or perhaps Grassy? I always thought it was the Amazon version but now i think not. My eyes become more more saucer-like and dreamy everytime you post a video wearing yours😍 That darkwood hallway and staircase is stunning btw.

it's Amazon! I actually like Grassy the best, but I wanted to buy men's pants instead of women's (b/c they have pockets) and they don't make the men's pant in Grassy.
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 4 года назад
also, side note in case you really are planning to buy one, the sizing in the women's pants runs super small. I consistently wear a medium in joggers (6-8 US), and I would have gone with L or XL if I'd gone with women's pants. In the men's pants I chose medium, but I could definitely have gotten away with L in the men's pant, too, for a slouchier fit. My men's mediums are pretty fitted, as you can see.

I think the randomness of it all and the stories about how we find our favorite pieces makes the piece special. Had you not been in Belgium, or Portland or LA, you would not have found these. Walking into a place or seeing something from the window that makes one have the feeling that possession is possible. Trying it on and finding that beginning of a beautiful relationship between you and the thing is very heady indeed. Those places and occasions when and where you wear them are like a snapshot into your life. My mother used to narrate photos of her when she was younger and talk about the clothes she had on and when she got them and what was special about the piece. I have a little relationship like that with my purchases, especially those that are from a second hand shop. The reason these pieces were given up was for you to have and love them. They are classic and can be worn through the years. My aunt gave me a little cashmere black swing jacket with those shortened sleeves of the fifties. I took it to college and wore it to death. I still have it.

I have a 1960s Black wool coat with a fox fur collar of a similar cut to that worn by Jackie O while first lady, with 3/4 length sleeves and a mid-thigh length. It's my going fancy winter coat and sometimes, it will elevate a simple black dress to stardom on its own. A pair of worn once champagne gold Jimmy Choos that I wore to my wedding reception and continue to wear of style reminiscent of your tango shoes, but with peep toes. A dramatic curved handle black patent leather bag that can be carried for events, because the style is so curvy and editorial or for a semi-dressy editorial look. A navy and emerald tartan satin skirt that was formerly of a dress with a fitted ballet top. I wore it several times to Scottish events I am required by blood law to attend and then had a seamstress remove the top. I can wear it very dressy with heals or I can wear it editorially dressy with black knee-high boots and a wool short sleeved turtleneck. I have a lot, a lot for work, a lot for super special occasions which are not coming to mind because we haven't been out to things in so long and many of those things are currently in winter storage (Which is not just for winter but also special occasions, things like going to the symphony or the ballet, which is the kind of thing I like to be dressed up to the point of wearing an actual tiara while attending).
