that umbrella stand used to carry coal for the fireplace - back in the early sixties, when we still had coal stoves, every household would have one of these (be it less fancy ones, lol), but then we switched to gas and now everyone has radiators, so...
@ImForgivenToo
@ImForgivenToo 3 года назад
that is what I was thinking too, since it has 2 handles....
@designorganize2608
@designorganize2608 3 года назад
I totally agree. In Britain, they are called coal 'scuttles'. You fill them, keep them beside the fireplace, then when the fire gets low, you pour more coal from the scuttle into the fireplace. Makes a nice umbrella stand though.

Yeah, I was also thinking that old antique umbrella stand looked suspiciously like an old antique coal scuttle 😄
@aanon5716
@aanon5716 3 года назад
@@micbarker6256 it definitely is a coal scuttle per my british grandmother. the lower handle is the give away. you held the 2 handles to pour out the coal. she still has one very similar that she has on her porch with flowers now. it was used by her grandparents & so on...its odd that business that beth bought it from listed it as an umbrella stand. i would have listed it as an antique coal scuttle that makes a perfect umbrella stand or flower pot, etc...at any rate, its charming as a decor piece. think about all that work & coal dust back then.

Hmmm I personally wouldn't put the fabric panel. The entryway is so small and you already have all this natural wood and jute and other neutral brown tones to soften the look. I think adding the fabric panel would draw the attention away from all the natural lighting you already have coming from your front entry way and such. Plus the door is statement in itself! It's a wonderful dark color to contrast with the walls and all the furnishings you put up :) If you wanted some other decoration there, I'd suggest some sort of painting or piece you can put above the door to welcome you guys when you come into/leave the house.

Must be one used for a big cook stove which needed quite a bit of coal. The scuttle would nicely pair with the oven. The handles of the stove and the protective bars around the stove, were also often made from copper. In this way the functional parts enhance the design.

Beth you can add a fabric curtain to the door window, also good for privacy reasons. That way you can decide to open or close the curtain. When the door is closed, it will soften the look… There’s a specific kind they use in traditional french houses👍🏽

The house just keeps getting better and better. I love the entrance. You managed to get a warm and cozy feel without being too cluttered. Perfect! I see what you're saying about covering the electrics. My first thought was to build a box around it that matched the wooden bench and make it large enough to have a shelf or two inside for storage. But...then I thought yes, you're right...a curtain would soften the frame. Lol! Oh my goodness... you must be having a blast seeing everything come together so well. ♥♥♥

Aww thank you! I'm so glad you think so! Funny enough it's kinda all growing on me and the more I think about it, I'll probably just leave it as is! I can envision it driving everybody nuts having to pull the curtain back to open the door ha!
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson 3 года назад
@@EntertainingWithBeth I was going to say that it would make me crazy! Imagine coming in out of the rain on a blustery day, opening the door and having the curtain blow around, get wet and stick you while you try to wrestle it out of the way to close the door! And it would cause a heating/cooling problem as the thermostat would always read the temp as warmer. The thermostat would run the a/c too much in summer and not enough in winter, so you’d freeze all the time.
@invictapatriot7511
@invictapatriot7511 3 года назад
The copper "umbrella stand" is called a coal scuttle in the UK. It would stand beside the fire full of coal so you did not have to keep going outside for the coal in the winter.

I think your entryway is perfect/complete. It’s really nice and I cannot believe what a difference a cabinet (I would have taken the trouble to haul it back to the car too), mirror and hooks could transform a space. The picture in the kitchen is perfect on that wall and from what I can see, the main area of the house looks complete. You have reached the point of cozy and inviting without competing with the views of the garden. Cannot wait for a grand tour.

Hi Beth. Love the new look foyer. I personally would leave the door area of the wall as it is. I like how it frames the outside yard. Hanging something over or around the door might take away the simplicity and beauty of the door. Maybe a long, narrow painting over the baskets might bring the color your looking for. Thanks for sharing.

Loved this video! TFS! Your beautiful entryway stand may also have been a “washstand”, where a big pitcher of water and matching bowl would be in a bedroom to wash up. The umbrella stand may have been used near a fireplace for ashes to be carried out of the house. I could be wrong on all of it, either way they are absolutely perfect how you’ve decorated with the pieces.
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson 3 года назад
I also could be wrong, but I don’t think that piece was a washstand - they usually had a bar for for hanging a washcloth and/or towel. It could have been just a little chest kept in the bedroom, though. I do agree about the “umbrella stand.” It’s an ash bucket. But it’s current use as an umbrella stand is great! If someone wants the same look, I know of a copper one near me that’s up for auction and it’s online at Vatican.com, but the auction ends soon.

For the mustard server, try googling small, mini, demitasse or mustard serving spoons to see what's out there. Hiding the thermostat behind something might cause its temp sensor to measure incorrectly. I got used to my wall panel after a while, forgetting it's even there until it clicks on or off.

Your French house is so cozy and homey and also really bright and airy! I don't know whether you commented on the square footage of the house but it's amazing what you've done with the amount of space in the living areas! I'm sure whenever you entertain, your guests feel right at home and can sit back and relax in this welcoming home with family and friends. And a delicious meal as well!! I'm learning from your skills at planning and preparing for gatherings. We have a large family and frequently have them to our home. We've recently downsized from a pretty large house to our current home which is half the size of the other one! So I'm trying to find ways to create a nice, relaxing space and vibe for our guests when they come for a dinner with us. I'm never as calm as you are right before everyone arrives. I'm usually running, doing last minute things like setting the table or filling the ice bucket. I admire your ability to have it so well planned out!

I like your channel a lot 💜The umbrella stand is actually a coal carrying bucket. You fill it up, bring it in and hold up with the handle at the bottom part and pour the coal in the stove. My great grandmother had one of these. 😄💜

Lovely finds! I may be wrong, but the “umbrella stand” though, I think it originally was a pot commonly used to scoop and carry coal pieces from the deposit into the house. It is a beautiful piece and it’s genius to use it for umbrellas 👍🏻😍

Very nice video. We live in France full-time. A propos, your umbrella stand is actually a coal skuttle. The handles help to 'throw' the coal on the fire. Wondrrful!

This is the first time I have watched you and you were so enjoyable. Your entry is tastefully beautiful ❤️. I love the simplicity of it. I thought about maybe covering the alarm and plastic with a woven basket. It wouldn't be too hard to just lift it when you need access and I believe it would go well the rest of the look of the entry. Thanks so much!

What a wonderful adventure! I love the entry hall piece and the Louis Philippe mirror is perfect. You can never go wrong with that combination! I can see a little gold drapery rod, very simple, over that door with a sheer white drape that you can push off to the side. Of course you would have to put the rod further out from the door width so you could push it back away from the frame, but it would still camouflage those little devices at the side of the door. A pretty little rod and some simple rings would be tres chic! Thanks for taking us along! Can't wait to hear what Mr. Ruggiero thinks of your lovely home. The baskets are FABULOUS hanging there!!

Not only did you painstakingly roll your table a long distance to your car, but you recorded your video at the same time! Nice job! Yes, I totally understand the covered dish on your perfect entryway table was one time used for collecting scraps. Here in New England, we have a bowl on the table to collect lobster shells while eating our lobster dinner. Bon Appetite! 🦞
