Watch this week's special history episode of Zero Punctuation on Acclaim Entertainment via our shiny new website: www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/2019/07/31/acclaim-entertainment-hall-of-shame-zero-punctuation/
Hey idk if it was brought up when you were in charge of these vids and stuff, but if you go back to the first "Zero Punctuation collection" put out by your channel, the old creator of a ton of them in many formats is the top comment and offered to forward y'all the files. Could be worth a look.
My friend Pedro is a remake of a 2014 flash game. That's not an excuse, but explains the slight 'XD random' use of Pedro being a Banana, used to be in the style of the matrix too.
And by mental illness, its depression. There is a whole variety of mental illness people suffer from that have extremely poor understanding in the general populace - like OCD - but all the artsy games depict depression. Although I have to give a shout out to Celeste for touching on themes of anxiety and Night in the Woods for depicting disassociation.
My game would be about an average day in my life and the symbolism for depression would be a gremlin that rugby tackles my leg at random intervals before running off into the woods. It would be called déprimé because French makes words better.
I started watching this series with my stepdad when I was four... It’s one of the earliest memories I have with him. Here I am, over a decade later, still watching them with him. I don’t think I would’ve been as close to him without it... so thanks and whatever
Probably just watching it by himself and the kid needed something to do, so the step gave in and let him watch too. One of those “sigh.. c’mere then” moments.
Honestly, the "If you know it's bad, why are you doing it?" bit is probably one of the funniest things Yahtzee has done. I think it's the sound effects that elevate it to hilarious.
To make it even more random, the last surface you touched defines the direction of gravity. Or the reveal is: you were playing as the ostrich all along
Mischief makers for the N64 had levels in wich you ride giant bees, ostriches and cats to fight killer robot assasins who are on transforming motorcycles. Pretty fun.
You know Yahtzee, when you started the 12 games in 12 months project, i was worried that it meant you where getting bored of zp and that would mean less zp eventually. But, I'm now seeing that the project is actually making you a better critic, that bit about how pedro has sunken too much effort into the core gameplay loop and none into anything else was really insightful. Also congrats on getting married! (whenever that was.)
@@Shaymin0 He's been married for whole year now(July 2018 according to Wikipedia). I learned about it around last fall during a post-ZP stream(can't remember which one)
yes, my Sea of Solitude really is more like a puddle. But it's a puddle in a hole so its still hard to get out of. I guess that's a well. Well of Solitude doesn't really have the same ring to it.
@@Oryxification I cannot adequately express my love for Sunless Sea in mere words. But what I can say is that it's the only game where I've tried to have sex with a fish person and been turned down.
The bit with a sewer level reminds me of Casino Royale (the 1967 spy comedy). Two of the characters are fleeing from bad guys, and James Bond’s daughter pulls aside a manhole cover. She sticks her legs in, the music track changes to “Whats New Pussycat”... for about two stanzas. Then her bodyguard drags her away to a much more sensible escape route, namely his car. Edit: spelling
What we all needed in our day was to have Homestarrunner references. Now my day is better. I know that Yatzee doesn't normally do "bringing joy to others" but he did today.
Had a brief and frustrating relationship with a woman in her forties who could have taken that advice as well. 2 in the fucking morning was the last straw.
Not a bad thing if it's done well. Now it seems mostly exploitative, like that awful TV-series about teen suicide (can't remember it's name) which seems to have triggered a wave of..... suicides.
Fredrik Olsson - 23 Reasons Why. What you’re referring to is called the Werther Effect, after the uptick in suicides after the publishing of the 18th century novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
I couldn't remember the game title so I literally just searched "zero punctuation dippy moo" and this was the first result. This algorithm is damn near self-aware.
Quick note on Moby Dick from someone who finished reading it for the first time last year: It's actually more like a man vs whale sea adventure got stuck in a wood chipper with a 19th century encyclopedia on whaling and then someone tried to tape the pieces of both back together into one book.
I don't remember intentionally ricocheting bullets off of an airborne fryingpan to shoot dudes around a corner, though. Because that would have been farking epic for Max Payne.
He’d note how needlessly specific the game gets later on, for a game thats mechanic was to allow manipulation of the level yet restricts you to complete it a specific way sometimes. Not a personal issue with the game, just something i believe yahtz would complain about
this was a really good episode. not only great jokes but also insightful game critique. feel like i havent gotten that in a while so it's very refreshing :)
"Stop texting him so mush you dippy moo!" Congratulations. Something on RU-vid actually made me laugh. (That wasn't just a clip from a stand up comedian special.)
Why do some indie games insist on having voice over that's not trained? I was watching this one indie trailer, amazed by the quality, especially of the musical score, and I cringed when the voice actor started to speak. It's better to use text over an untrained voice actor. In fact, some let's play communities love games that have no voice acting.
@@BJGvideos Adventure Time had a good director and a VA coach so they could make whomever sound decent to great. Random indies don't have CN money, connections and equipment.
There's a new game out called Songbird Symphony which is a full-on musical with lyrics and all despite having no voice acting whatsoever. Well worth checking it out.
It can occasionally work. The Cat Lady had mostly amateur voice actors except for Susan Frost doing Susan Ashworth the main character and pretty jank sound engineering (the entire game was made by one guy except for voice acting) but it kind of really works and actually adds to the atmosphere.
@@Darkgun231 A game could be good or bad, but if it appeals to someone, there's nothing wrong with it. I've played games that get my emotions fucked up that other people don't think are good lmao
Yup, all fair. It just triggered an emotion and probably better in a single play through (played it in a single evening and was absorbed in the artstyle). Probably won't have the same impact again.
For people who are curious what durians are, I lived in Singapore for about seven or eight years and they were there. Supposedly they taste good but you have to get past the stench first. Quite possibly one of the worst smelling fruit on the planet. You could smell them being sold at open air markets from like half a mile away.
OK when Yahtzee does the monster voice it reminded me of the trolls from the Discworld games, I need to find them and replay them, it's also a shame they didn't make more of them but if they did them now it would probably be messed up like the latest attempt at making a guards guards show was.
Yahtzee nails my 'problem' with Sea of Solitude. Its themes are rather heavy-handed and don't say anything that hasn't been said before and better. Though as it is quite quick to finish, I am not really bothered by it. If you get it for free (e.g. through Origin Access), give it a shot. It might draw you in.
funny coincidence- I did that since it was cheap on steam this month, and I was still annoyed. On top of that: ze narration ist awfool, its leik, ze designer sinks "Hey ei doont neet tu hire ze english talkers, mein englisch ists just pörrfect." I got it on EA-Play though, so maybe that's why I found it worse.
As soon as yahtzee mentioned the ostrich i got mischief makers flashbacks. Riding a cat, an ostrich and a giant bee to fight agains motorcycle assasins.
