My rose garden probably at its height. Some are still to flower, some are over and some are just right. But I don’t think it will look better than it’s looking right now. Most of my roses are new, planted within the last year and in the video I do try and give an age of the different roses. But for me they are coming along very nicely. Join me as I have a walk around the garden. My full English rose garden tour. With a bit of German Sausage!:)

This popped up on my recommendations & I've missed your "Hello lovely viewer" so much that I just had to watch this even though it's last year's video. I have my 3 Brother Cadfael roses potted up & 10 (TEN!!) more roses (not Cadfael) being shipped Monday to arrive Tue./Wed. My potted roses overwintered w/ only one loss most are growing enthusiastically. We are just now getting some sunny days here in the clouds & rain that is Oregon spring. Can't wait to see your 2024 garden's first flush! Can't wait to see mine, either!

Yes Chandos beauty is lovely Hailey. So far very impressed with it. Iceberg has gone now sadly. Replaced with Chandos and I’ve no regrets I have to say. Yes the timeless collection are kicking butt now for sure. Very impressed with them. All in third flush as of now except timeless cream which is giving me its 2nd flush. Please let me know if you get fragrance from yours as cream is the only one I get little to nothing from. The second flush on mine I had some weird discolouration on all of them but that’s now cleared up and this flush is great. Sweet honey is a lovely rose but I think mine were both pick of the crop. Selected from my local garden centre that I could see where gonna do very well. It has no fragrance but a great performer when it comes to flowering.

21:18 - thats the earliest stage to pick a rose, though green petals are still in touch with the bud but you can see how petals have formed and will produce a full sized rose out of it. While the bud behind it is too closed and petals havent been formed yet- not ready to pick. I dont pick cluster roses as you lose quite a few as not all of them will open.

Hi!Jay... i noticed your Eustacia vye is so near the Ivy...just wanna share my experience with roses planted near an ivy...I had my graham thomas flowering so well for successive 2 years and on its 3rd year she just slowed down and very weak...when i dug it was then i discovereda that the poison ivy has choked its roots...in case it is happening to your Eustacia vye.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Hi lily that’s excellent to know I said ivy but it’s actually hedging although ivy is growing amongst it and is growing. Yes that makes total sense. The roses I guess are 18”-24” from the hedging/ivy I did wonder when I planted but thought I’d be ok. Very very annoying to know that but sometimes the truth hurts. I will leave them in situ for this year and reassess in the dormant season. I imagine it is compelled by the fact I fed and water the roses. That’s of course gonna attract even more attention beneath the surface of the soil. I may talk about this in a future video at my expense but that’s something I never shy away from, for me it’s all a learning experience so thanks so much for pointing this out.
@lilyrose5612
@lilyrose5612 2 года назад
@@Jay_Jay Yes...i just said to myself just to inform you as that was an ordeal for me...My Graham Thomas dd not survive with that anyway as the feeds and hydration i gave to the roses propelled the growth of my Ivy.It is not so noticeable at an early stage and up in the surface but its beneath that they compete the roses' roots like to go deep and so does the ivy...Since getting rid of my ivy could cost so much...the solution i made was,i got a big plastic pot buried it in the ground and planted another DA this time it is the Lady gardener. As space is of an essence to me as my garden is tiny.it is easy to wiggle and keep track of the ivy roots from beneath. I still bought another GT rose.🤭

@@patrickbowen5398 you will know better than I PB by the sounds of it:) keep doing what your doing if it works well for you and it obviously is. I have found that a mix of top soil in the pots lead to a blend of the thicker and stronger roots together with the finer roots. And a neat compost medium even over time leads to just the finer roots that don’t fill the containers as quick as I’d have imagined. That’s what I’m seeing anyway. But do what works for you. ;)

@@Jay_Jay Well, I'm actually trying to find a new method of planting roses in pots - typically in the past, all I've done is add a little bone meal to potting mix and left it at that. As a result, the David Austin roses I grew did not really grow well at all - the blooms were small and so was the plant - so I guess I'm looking for some advice on how I can get my potted roses to perform better than they have in previous years .....because I think my roses need more than I have been giving them in previous years. But I'm sure you have an unboxing video lined up for us by now. Thanks for the pink/white call out! Your tip about John Innes is food for thought (and for the roses). It's sad to think that we have perhaps already seen the very best of our roses - let's hope for a bumper second/third/fourth flush over the next months. Thank you for sharing your beautiful roses and your experiences with us, Jay. I can totally relate to your problem with rain. I don’t have as many roses to experiment with as you, but I believe that first flower in loose bud stage (and the sepals - green part around the bud - have folded back) should open when cut? Though it may not reach its full beauty / open all the way compared to if you had left it on for longer. This could even vary depending on the rose. Have you started experimenting with cutting some of yours? Looking forward to hearing how it goes!
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Thanks mate, no I haven’t started experimenting as yet I’ve never been one for cutting and bringing indoors. Until now I very much prefer to leave them in the garden. But I can see issue with this. I didnt really want to experiment as many of these roses are new and won’t be giving me gazillions of flowers. I wait patiently for every single bud to appear so experimenting I’d like to have a clue to work from rather than suck it and see. So your saying I need to wait until the sepals are all fully folded down exposing the closed flower? But different roses can have a different outcome.

Really even when they are fully closed? Sorry I am so stupid I know. I rarely cut flowers I only ever spend my time patiently waiting for them to flower in my garden.

Absolutely beautiful! I just can’t believe I’ve never seen a sweet honey in real life before. It’s Kordes 1997 but Kordes online shop doesn’t have it 😭and other sites only have unattractive photos of it-so I didn’t consider buying it before. Thank you for making so many helpful and beautiful videos.

Hi hina. Sweet honey is a lovely rose. It might be my favourite is certainly one of them. I’ll do an end of year favourite and I’ve no doubt this will feature heavily. She appears t be very happy here that’s for sure.

Hi, really like your Joy Vieli, it makes a nice change to the D.A varieties, do you know if it performs well without spraying?
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Hi stu, I never spray my roses with insecticides etc . Only this year I’ve sprayed some with neem oil and eco soap. Joy vieli was not one I sprayed. Despite atrocious aphids this year they haven’t found that rose as yet. For me it’s early days but a lovely rose for my garden. I feel a little awkward what I said about the others the expert Rose judges are the ones to listen to, but for me in my garden I’m very happy with Joy Vieli so far.

@@Jay_Jay Thanks very much for that info, I appreciate what you mean about commenting on how a rose has performed in your particular situation and feeling you may be 'treading on experts toes' but it really is helpful for those of us trying to find roses that might do well in a similar high rainfall and no spray envinonment. Think I may well take a chance on Joy Vieli.Cheers.

@@lonesomeStu I hope you’re pleased mate. The petals on joy vieli they seem that harder texture if you know what I mean. I was looking at her and it’s a wonderful life yesterday and there wasn’t a huge difference look wise, but joy has less thin petals and I imagine that’s the difference. Best of luck

How do you get a baseless pot? My Lady of Shallot grew big in a pot and just kept flowering even now in November.

Hi Marilyn. It’s an easy process, I did do a video last year. It does have many benefits and now I have probably a dozen roses in baseless pots. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uw-5hPT3CYA.html

Hi Jay, where do you buy your kordes roses from?
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Hi Karla, it’s not so easy thankfully there is a place near me called rumwoods rose nursery, I think they trade under the name British roses . Co. Uk something like that. They have a decent selection of roses from all breeders and the beauty of it is its local to me so I can handpick the best Rose from maybe a dozen. Some of the quality is so so, but some is very good. I also use Peter beales, they often have great deals. I used a company just recently the one that the delivery man appeared in this video “English roses” they were very good. Jones the Rose have been very good for me. Always good quality. I’ve had a couple from Trevor white roses both times very very happy.

How would you compare Summer romance with Olivia? Thank you
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Hi I’ve had my oldest Olivia for three summers. This is the first summer with summer romance. Summer romance for me here I think is the better Rose. But that’s an early call.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay 2 года назад
Olivia loves to flower. I would say as close to continual flower as you can get from my DA roses. Exceptional health. No real fragrance, Maybe a tiny bit. Growth seems relatively upright and reasonably strong. The pink bleaches to an almost white in the direct sun. But now my older Olivia is bigger there is always fresh new pink flowers coming through. My Summer romances are very young. But colour seems to stay much more pink. Seems to do better in wet weather. I’m seeing stronger more upright growth than Olivia. Flowers not as abundantly as my new Olivia but this could change with age from what I’ve seen from others. Much better fragrance from summer romance. Anywhere between medium to strong. Another couple of years of summer romance I’ll have a better picture. But so far over the moon. Health of summer romance “seems” totally solid. But it’s only June.
