Here in the States, rose collections like the Oso Easy roses, the Drift roses, & the Knockout roses are available in the big hardware center chains like Home Depot & Lowes. They’re bred to be low-maintenance & reliable, which isn’t anything to snort at really, but I think since they’re viewed as “mass market roses,” many gardeners turn their noses up at them a bit-they’re not “breeder roses” & they’re very, very easy to come by. (I say all this as someone who doesn’t grow them either, so perhaps I have turn my nose up at them as well haha. Honestly, they’re everywhere, quite popular to fill in beds outside banks & shops, so that may also contribute to the perception that they’re not really for discerning gardeners, who’d rather have something unique & harder to come by in their collections. For comparison, recently there was a huge mad dash to buy up all the Evelyn DA roses available. Everybody’s hair was on fire over that one, or perhaps just their wallets. There are always rose growers looking for the DA Summer Song rose here as well, since it was never really made available in the US on a grand scale, so it’s acquired this Holy Grail reputation for US growers. Meanwhile, it appears most UK growers don’t see Summer Song as a rose worth the time, money, or energy to grow, since it takes a lot of care and attention to keep it looking a halfway-decent plant.)
Sadly it doesn’t surprise me what you say. A shame because whenever I see one on my phone screen they always looks fantastic. I did hear a rumour once that a gun manufacturer designed a pistol that couldn’t sell despite its high standard and extremely cheap price. For years they were not selling. So they come up with a desperate idea and tripled the price... you know the rest. Crazy.
Sweet honey id love to see grow in the U.S. i did email kordes asking if it was sold there and under what name but they didn’t reply to me. Nasty kordes!
Here in Ohio, warmth is needed to volatize the rose fragrance. Cool/cold days, little or no fragrance, warm, sunny days, maximum fragrance, hot days, the fragrance is all evaorated out. My Earth Angel aka. Hertzigovinia Christiana has moderate , VERY noticeable, old rose scent underlaid with a very definite grapefruit scent, and I LOVE the old, romntic, cabbage rose form. Thank you for sharing. Ralph in Ohio
Hi Ralph and thanks. Yes I get the weather can effect the fragrance but what I wasn’t aware of was the weather has to be seasonal for the previous 24-48 hours at least. We had un-seasonal cold overnight temps that went unnoticed so come morning with glorious weather I was getting little to no fragrance. I think the entire month of June the overnight temps plummeted for that time of year so no matter day time conditions the roses had little or no fragrence. It was explained to me if it’s too cold or dangerous for pollinating insects, the roses turn the fragrance tap off. And only release the fragrance when it’s safe for the pollinators. This kinda makes sense: thanks for commenting and apologies for not replying sooner.
@@Jay_Jay Yes, the production of otto of roses by steam distillation in Turkey/Bulgaria shows us that heat is needed to volatize the essential oils in the blooms. When we see that the primary fragrance in roses via gas phase spectrometry is called geraniol we see that actually the fragrances are not oils, they are alcohols. Our basic high school chemistry taught us that any chemical name with the suffic "ol" is an alcohol. Of course gas phase spectrometry reveals dozens of substances in the fragrance profile which as we know varies from variety to variety. Alas, no global warming for us , only pestilent carbon taxes!
Hi Jay Jay! Looks like your garden is responding to your care and love, you’ve got a lot of beautiful roses now! Gertrude is adorable and Lark ascending has lots of bloom. What is the name of the tree rose at the door? Looks fabulous! Kindly keep us updated, I would love to see your garden when all are in full bloom. Most of my roses are still in the phase of producing buds, I think I pruned them so late.🌹
Thanks Gemma. Yes sadly I don’t know the name of the tree rose at the front door. We bought it several years ago. I’m crossing my fingers we see them all flowering together but as you know weather and timing not so easy. Thanks Gemma as I always say all credit to the roses :)
@@Jay_Jay I am in the High Desert Region of SW New Mexico, in Las Cruces....it is considered Zone 8a in our Growing, which is nice, but it is the Heat of the Summer and lack of precipitation that is our downfall. No Humidity! When it is there, it is likely raining! :)
......... I see many of your roses in jardinieres also. My largest, most cold tolerant roses I leave in the ground. my irreplaceable, less winter cold tolerant roses I have in enormous pots. I drag them into the 45 degree Fahrenheit room for the winter. Warm days I drag them all out of doors, this gives me roses a full month earlier than those planted out. And I must say, the songbirds approve of your garden!
Hi and sorry for not replying sooner. Yes moving my potted roses into the potting shed for the winter months. I have seen the head start you talk of so I will try this next year. Many thanks for dropping by and sorry for the delay in replying.
@@Jay_Jay Many thanks for sharing. Also, having the shorter growing roses in large planters puts them up closer to eye level where their sight and scent is more easily appreciated. I bought 3 new roses this year, my darling of them all is Pashmina Veranda Flower Circus developed by Kordes. It fell out of favor because it's blooms have zero tolerance for wet weather, they will ball and never open. THAT is why Pashmina shall live her entire life in a huge pot, so that I can keep her out of heavy , persistent rains. Pashmina, like Earth Angel aka Herzegovina Christiana has perfectly formed, Redouté style cabbage roses. Old, romantic, sentimental in form. Thankyou for your reply and wishing you great weather and success this growing season. Oh, I communicated all over eastern Europe for 2 full years to get a Paschmina, nobody would send me one, absolutely unavailable in the USA.
@@rareandwonderfull it’s funny because only today I was considering what to do with a few of my smaller roses and was thinking the exact same. Also because of the smaller size having them lifted off the ground easier for companion planting around the base. So instead of planting I’m thinking of keeping them lifted up. Now I’m gonna Google pashmina veranda ;)
@@Jay_Jay Yes, a new growing season, yay! time to decide on how to work things. I think that nasturtiums dripping down out of the rose pot would look nice. I think that semi concealment of a pot that way integrates the pot visually into it's environment. I plant tulips in the huge pots with my roses , that way the pot "lights upi" early, then as the tulips go dormant the rose is loading up with blooms. My roses MUST have fragrance, Pashmina Veranda is the only on allowed to not be fragrant because of her perfect Redoute style cabbage roses.
Huge storm in London hope you roses will be ok especially Sweet Honey 😍 would be interesting to know what impacts the smell of the roses 🤔 yes lovely steps, thank you for the mention have you seen jeri Landers hop along hollow channel ? She has lovely pathways, I'd like to do something like that in Hungary 😁
Hi potager yes I saw the rain. So glad I made this video I missed it by minutes. Proper torrential rain. I dread to think what it’s like now but so glad I made it. Maybe the roses can detect when it’s gonna rain like that and shut off the fragrance switch!😂😂😂 who knows but I do get this with my nose I’m sure it’s bloody useless. I will check out that video channel. Thanks potager ;)
That’s a great video channel you put up. She knows how to recreate the English garden for sure. More English than us. I’ve named her the Duchess of Landers 😀😀
Hi coco and Thanks. Yes it’s something I only detected from our phone screens but wasn’t sure. The knockout roses always look so fantastic I never understood it.
Another really enjoyable video! Sadly, the rose 'Sweet Honey' is not available here in the US, but it is a lovely rose. Who knows maybe someday it will be available here. Many thanks again.
Your welcome pb and thanks for dropping by. Sweet honey I’m sure will be available at some point but I imagine under a different name. I’ll keep my ear to the ground
@@Jay_Jay Thanks Jay Jay - it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. One question though - as you have lots of roses in pots - how do you over-winterize them?
@@patrickbowen5398 thanks pb. I havent overwintered any of my roses in pots. They just stay in situ. But I’m in the U.K. and we don’t really get extreme climates here. It’s just grey the whole time :) however next year my favourite potted roses i will put in our potting shed for the winter months. I have noticed with others in the U.K. doing so puts a good 4-6 week head start on them before releasing them back to the outside.
Your roses are looking so well and your Gertrude j. Is stunning around the bottom. Sweet Honey is so beautiful too. I can't wait until mine come out, I've another one out today. How's Seanie
Thank you strangedaze yes I am finding this out now. Atmospheric/weather conditions need to be right for some roses to shine with fragrance. It’s not something that gets mentioned too much on yt. But I am finding this out now. Thank you.
Olivia has to feature in everyone’s garden. Easy to grow and Bullet proof. Lacks fragrance but so many flowers and sets the benchmark for health to make up for it.
@@jasonwoods4811 it does indeed mate but higgledy piggledy edge brickwork might add a little age to it :) and with me laying the bricks I’m pretty sure they won’t be straight 😂😂😂
Can't believe how many GJ blooms you have. Not one of mine open yet. I got Mary Delany (formerly Mortimer Sackler) last year but is doing very poorly compared to my other climbers but may give her this year and see if she improves. Your garden is looking gorgeous already and not even summer yet.
It’s doing very well. That’s 2 GJ there if you didn’t know. But most of that growth is from one that is seeing its 3rd summer. The other one is only it’s 1st spring. But also doing well. But it was good when I first got it. Thanks Netty. As always all credit to the roses :)
Great video! Just found your channel! Liked and subscribed! Sounds like its windy there and maybe the wind is preventing you catching the scent? I have only 2 david austen roses, container roses - my 2nd year! So excited to add more! I've seen a few of the knock out roses too on other vids, im curious too.
Hi and welcome. I think mainly for me it was lower overnight temps. There were days last week or two it was lovely dry still weather during the day but lower overnight temps for time of year, whilst roses were in flower killed it. Thankfully they are back now! But I think this does go on regardless of what me or anyone else says on RU-vid says. Roses, the majority of them anyway will not always be that magical strong bowl you over fragrance day in day out. But your Gertrude I think will fair very well in time.
could you do a video on the support you have for your climbing roses on the side of the walls, fence? wow i wish my gertrude jekyl looks like that someday. how much sun does that gertude get ? im moving mine to less sun i think
Hi there yes I could certainly do this. I’ll try and show you during the week. The Gertrude in the back garden gets about 8 hrs sun a day. Anywhere from around midday to 8pm in June time. The ones in the front garden(there are two). In June they get sun from around 6am up until midday (with a gap as the sun goes behind the tree).I have bought I think 5 gertrudes In the past and in my limited experience I think Gertrude needs time. All roses need time of course but from my experience anyway Gertrude especially so. 4 of mine there was little movement in the first year or two and were a little poorly I guess. It’s only this year they have started to stretch there legs. So be patient she will reward you I’m sure.
Hi Jay, Your Roses look smashing. Reading comments I just wanted to add that I also have Two Bathsheba's growing up an Arch, do get full sun light, three years planted, tbh I'm not happy with their slow growth compaired to all my other DA roses. Hope we see a video when you go to David Austin's ? We are going early July.
Hi vic I think bathsheba is one of them roses that can have mixed reviews. I know some love it as it behaves impeccably for them others not so much. I will defo do a video when I go to DA. thanks vic.
I have a Bathsheba also 3 years old now, growing against a north-facing fence, so hardly gets any direct sun. Its growth is strong but I'm not sure I'm getting the best out of the flowers in terms of quality, although I do get quite a lot.
Lovely Garden JJ. If your looking for a climber I can highly recommend Bathsheba (DA) I planted 3 about four years ago. Have a look at latest Murphy's Garden video for Chelsea JJ. Chandos Beauty 5.04 in. :-)
@@gavinparry5426 thanks mate I’ll look into it. Hailey has me sold on gentle hermonoe I’ll have to look into that aswell. See if anything would suit that position.
Hello Jay, do you hand water your garden or do you have an irrigation system in place? Im creating my garden and I dont have an irrigation system and its making me a little nervous having to water by hand.
Hi nilgun. Sadly I don’t have an irrigation system and yes I do water by hand. It is possible but it’s a hard graft. An irrigation system is something I’d look especially if I was at the planning stage and had many plants to go down, but by hand is certainly possible.
@@Jay_Jay Hi JJ thank you for the reply. I potentially could put down the irrigation but have decided not too. I also will be watering by hand and enjoying my roses. Take care from Australia
@@Petalsandstamens best of luck remember they will need alot more water when you first plant as I’m sure you know. If it gets too much you could retro fit an irrigation system if need be.
That’s interesting I have an iceberg too and was convinced this was snow Princess after the initial week or so of flowering. Have you any photos of your snow princess?
Knockout roses aren’t real roses! They are real but bred to keep flowering . There’s no scent . Not even a lot of petals. Me no gust. If you threw away your peace rose you’d probably axe away at the knockouts lol 😂
