Doing a pantry inventory, and then seeing clearance plants at the store, will certainly change ones garden plans. Plus, they've been there sitting and baking the hot sun for months now. Nobody wants them. They needed a home ❤ I had to save them.
Hopefully these mid season Tomatoes have long enough to produce large quantities for me.

Just a tip for your tomatoe plants, down here in Southern Mississippi I have been planting basil in and around my tomato plants. The green horn worm and the moth that lays the eggs hates the basil. I have been planting basil around my tomatoes now for over 10 years and have had no more green horn worm problems since I started doing this.

Yes even garlic is very beneficial for keeping damaging insects away from our prized vegetables. It is worth noting that all herbs that are planted in and around our gardens have a herbalisidale effect on many different types of bad insects as well as the beneficial ones. Even flowers such as marigolds and zinnias have their place in our gardens, not only for their colorful flowers but for warding off pest.

Here's a tip I just learned this year: If you're growing indeterminate tomatoes vertical, when you prune the suckers, leave the last sucker before the main growing tip of your plant. If you accidentally break the top of the plant, your sucker will more quickly become the main growing stem. Cheers.

I'm jealous of your sandy native soil. I live at the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. There are so many rocks in our soil that it takes a pick ax to dig a hole. Because of this we grow all of our veggies and fruit in grow boxes that my husband built.

@albanymountainhomestead
@albanymountainhomestead 4 года назад
Unless you can dump a bunch of money for the best possible soil conditions I will say it does take a long time to build up good soil. In the fall when you mow leaves and grass rake it all into the garden to breakdown through the winter. Go on your local Facebook page and ask for free manure, some farmers are eager to get rid of it. Though you may have to load it yourself a little sweat equity goes a long way. I also found free mulch which helped tremendously with weed suppression and adds to the soil over time. My first yr gardening was the worst and 4 yrs later the garden is just now producing more than ever. It's a learning process for sure.

In addition to checking Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor for free manure (near me there are lots of horse farms who love to give you manure!) you may also want to check with some cities near you. Many have compost programs, two near me let you load a whole truck bed for $20. Sure it’s not perfect, but is a great jumpstart to building your soil. Happy growing! 💜🌱

Whoo Hoo! Nothing like the first tomato of the season! Right now, I'm getting my first tomatoes too from Celebrity. I'm experimenting with Fall tomatoes too! I started my own plants a few months ago and transplanted the babies this month (July). I hope for a mid Sept thru Oct harvest. Before first frost (November?), I pick all the green ones and store them in the pantry for Winter. They're better than any in the stores in January! This year, for my Fall crop experiment, I chose varieties that yield quicker. I'm trying two determinate types, which I expect to do the best. I also did a few Indeterminates to try in a raised bed where I can run them up a string. If the Winter is warmer (I don't think it will be this year), then the Indeterminates will keep producing. But, you can always take cuttings from the IND types and try to over winter them indoors for a few early tomatoes. I've found that when I do that, they produce earlier but the plants overall produce less; so I just put one or two in the garden for the 'first' harvest. This Fall, I am trying Homestead, German Johnson, Mountain, ..... and Federale Roma still needs planting. My garden is much smaller than yours though. I'm in S. Calif with a long growing season and try to keep small amounts of fresh food most of the year.

Oh I love the idea of storing green tomatoes and bringing on indoors! Our home stays pretty cold over the winter not sure how it will do but if I have the energy at the end of the season and I remember I would like to try this.

When planting a plant of any type that has been in a pot I tend to break a few roots or disturb them. I have had plants that continue to grow roots in a small circle like they had been “root trained” by the pot they were in. By disturbing the roots or breaking a few the plant is forced to put roots outward. Just a tip from my experience anyway!

You won't regret planting those tomatoes. If it cools off before ripening, just cover them with hoops and get them thru (there's usually an "indian summer" that they'll ripen in. Filling in between plants that are close to done can produce other needed crops too.
