In a recent video I had a soft shackle fail, and I had countless people tell me what I did wrong to cause it, and apparently there are even quite a few posts around the interwebs breaking down how I did it wrong and what caused the failure (even though I haven’t been able to find any of these posts). There are many different arguments about what happened, but the one thing they have in common, is that all of them are wrong. Now I’m not saying that I didn’t use the shackle incorrectly, but I am saying that the design of the shackle itself is the reason it failed in the configuration that it it did, when the other ones held.
I bought this particular soft shackle off of Amazon who knows how many years ago, and I have no idea what brand it is, and in this video I compare it to one of my @YankumRopes shackles to show the difference
in how they are constructed and what I believe caused the failure.

Thanks for doing exactly what you’re never supposed to do, to show the importance of having the proper gear!!! I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people post pictures and shorts of their cheap and dangerous gear. Not only the importance of the right ropes and soft shackles, but choosing the right bumpers that won’t just rip apart as well. Damn Amazon junk gives people a major false sense of security in the off road world.

As a retired USAF Logistician/Statistician I just couldn’t resist. On a second review of your knotty (notty, naughty) video and just for fun, I counted the use of “not” 27 times, “knot” 26 times, and “naughty/‘knotty’” once. The analysis does NOT include contractions…hard enough keeping up, and the probability of error in the count is roughly 10%. Your videos are always entertaining!

Casey, I had never heard of a "soft shackle" before I started watching your videos a month or so ago,yet your discussion was still interesting! What I particularly appreciated was how you obviously had looked hard to see how the two products differ, and explained your observations in a very clear way. It's obvious that the amazon product had built in liabilities (the loose noose, and the wimpy knot) compared to the other brand. It took a thoughtful examination to pick up on HOW those differences made one superior to the other. Keep up the good work!

As always, keep up the good work!

Thank you for explaining the problem in enough detail for us lay people to understand. This is one of those episodes that should almost be put in a group list of educational videos. (Videos that include other channel's episodes that are also educational.) Of course, not knowing enough, I did not think you installed the soft shackle "wrong". And when you recovered it, it did not look broken / snapped in 2 pieces. So I just trusted that their was a problem, which is easy to believe for in-expensive items that are basically required to function perfectly all the time. I did like the odd / humorous reference in one of your recent videos about Matt's Off Road Recovery.

Great video Casey. I love your candidness, you had what you initially thought was equipment failure on a job, and still posted it. Then with more research on it and looking at your equipment that you used, found that it was a design flaw. I have not seen the original video yet, but love the explanation of what caused the failure. I have done some professional towing before and have never used the soft shackles. But after watching you, Matt's Off Road Recovery, trail mater and others, soft shackles have a spot for great usefulness. Thanks for the vid!

I volunteer with an off road recovery group, and we have did over 100 recoveries last year. My gear is used!!! I am glad to see your explanation of soft shackle make up. They are a great tool, but I had no idea how bad some could be until I saw this video. I have Yankum, Rhino USA, Sling Shot, Bubba Rope, and Amazon shackles. I will now look at them a little closer to see if I need to chunk some of them. I do know that none of them have that burned rope like your Amazon shackle. I have yet to have an equipment failure, but know that with time, it will happen. I inspect and clean my gear to make sure that there are no signs of wear that is too extreme. I know now that I need to take a look at my knots and loops on all my soft shackles and make sure they are all in tip top condition. Thanks for the honest review. Keep up the good work.

One of the great safety benefits of the UHMWPE/HMPE ropes, like Amsteel, Spectra or Dyneema, is that they stretch very little, so they don't hold energy... much. So when they break they just drop. I still wouldn't recommend standing near them under high load. I watched one break while a ferry was docking, the ship was going too fast (like slow walking speed with several thousand tons to stop) when the bow spring came tight. It broke with a bang, but just dropped into the water. It didn't spring back along its length. The rope that broke was about 2.5" diameter, so an average strength around 250 tons (depending on manufacturer and construction), but the lack of stretch and the weight of the ship made it snap like thread. A friend was chief engineer on the ferry and he said they broke a couple a year through a mixture of small mistakes and wear.

Hi Casey I asked yankum rope about how to hook up a soft shackles here is what they said Hi Loren, Casey does show how to properly rig a soft shackle. Right below the base of the knot, he does mention that as he winches the shackle has a tendency to rotate if the tension loosens up. We have engineered ours to maintain a tight fit even if the shackle rotates.

Thank you for thus Casey! I'd not heard of kinetic ropes until I started watching MORR. The use of soft shackles is a new thing for me also. Having watched this presentation I now have a much better I understanding of why they'd be used over hard shackles. I can really appreciate why Yankums cost the way they do in how you explained the construction of the shackle! Weaving those fibres all they way back like that must be a very intricate task, even if a machine may be doing it. I've attempted a bit of splicing on sheets or lines and am impressed that Yankum spliced their shackles the way you described....hmmm starting to repeat myself, perhaps I should of stopped the knot/not shots earlier🥴

I believe the Yankum shackles are like the ones I bought. The rope passes back through itself and continues to the knot. You can actually open the loop up to get the knot in and pull the loop smaller around the knot before you pull. The loop on the failed shackle appears a fixed size. Nice video. It's refreshing to see an explanation without the marketing/bs from the sales dept.

Thank you for explaining the difference between the cheap soft shackle and the yankum soft shackle. I like the fact you explain what is good for you may not be good for others. There will be critics that is a given, these people are never happy, and one has to feel sorry for them. Okay, no longer feel sorry for them and now we get to wait for the next video:) Stay safe and stay warm

Great review. Hopefully Yankum will link this video to their site. Really shows why the Yankum soft shackles are the ones to buy.

Interesting stuff, Casey. Thanks for posting this. I just looked over my nine soft shackles. One Yankum, two Bubba GatorJaw, two Saker w/ rings, two good Amazon generic (but with large, tight knots and narrow nooses) and two suspect "KingPro" soft shackles/rings. I have seen discussed how the knot on a good soft shackle is more than likely "mechanically set"... dressed by force to become an even better knot. I suspect that my Yankum soft shackle (the one I got with my Matt's Rope) was built that way as are a pair of GatorJaw (Bubba Rope) that I bought at 4WheelParts... those soft shackles are the standard of excellence. The two generic soft shackles are good, the two Saker soft shackles/snatch rings I have purchased through Amazon also have big, tight knots and narrow "nooses". The Amazon-sourced "KingPro" were alarming to me as the no0se is overly-large, and their knots although large seemed loose and not "set". Those are two I will not use. I may destroy those then use the snatch rings on my better soft shackles when the need arises.

Pretty obvious the difference between them and what the problem is. The internet experts weren't there. Carry on. Excellent video showing the difference.

Great video, and thank you for taking the time to do it. I have soft shackles in my Jeep and SxS. I need to check them to make sure they are good ones.

Great video. Excellent information. You do great work and should not have to defend what happens to a bunch of know-it-alls

Thanks for the video. One point should be mentioned. Regular inspection of equipment. That shackle looks well used and stretched out! Maybe it's useful life was over before that last pull. That's why one should buy good quality equipment. You made a good point about quality! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the side by side comparison. Considering it a good lesson on inspecting equipment too. Haven’t had the all the experiences you’ve had but I too still have all my fingers….. thankfully. 😊

Great video explaining the details of soft shackles. The moral of this story is to buy quality made shackles, not the cheap junk at Amazon. There is a price difference between Amazon and Yankum and for me, buy the quality assembled shackle and don't try to save money on cheap stuff that will fail.
