Great video. Good example of the need for glass bedding. I don't even bother shooting a new rifle without atleast glass bedding the recoil lug area and tang. It's quite easy and makes a world of difference.

💯 most, if not all factory rifles have limited bedding and would benefit from a good glass bedding.

Yeah some days I wonder what the hell I was thinking buying a 338Lap for a deer gun but when I see how hard it hits big deer like that last stag I shot I smile knowing that if i hit a deer with that much force and it gets away it must have been a ghost cause nothing can survive 30 seconds after being hit with canon. She has the same amount of energy at 400yds as a 30-06 with a 180gn bullet has at the muzzle!!! KARBOOM
@BoltActionProductions
@BoltActionProductions 4 года назад
@@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures The 338 Lap has certainly interested me for some time. Whether I could handle it or enjoy shooting it would definitely come down to its configuration. The time that you have spent on yours will pay off over and over.
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 4 года назад
Braked its a dream to shoot as is prone with no brake, its free standing that is the challenge as the shoulder doesn't offer enough resistance to the aggressive recoil regardless of how you hold it. This is why I have developed a 225gn woodleigh load that shoots to poi with no muzzle brake fitted which has a muzzle velocity just a tad faster than you could safely push a 338wm. This is my new bush load and I carry 270gn eld-x for any longer shots that pop up for the extra horse power that is needed for distance.

Whats your opinion on leafy ghillie suit ? I recently bought one thought it was interesting, definitely looking at other hunting clothing tho but thought id try it.
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
I had one years ago but found it got caught on everything, especially blackberry bushes. I've never found camo to be all that important for rifle hunters. Bow hunting, you're always looking for those 1% ers to give you an edge. Even then, I never went back to the gillie suit. No pockets and hard to get to your pockets underneath.

Hi Zebra, I noticed in this clip you have a SOL emergency Bivvy on the bench....I'm trying to reduce my pack weight and was wandering if you could give me some advice on your sleep system? And how you get your pack weight down? I've been hunting Sambar for 30+ yrs, not much backpacking though. Hoping to get into it more if I can get the weight down enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. cheers
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 2 года назад
Hey Luke...most of your weight in back packing is in your pack, sleeping bag and your shelter. My sleep system varies dependent on time of year and conditions. Because I exclusively run a 3x3 sea2summit fly I have the SOL pro bivy for wet and cold conditions. If it fine weather it stays at home. I always run a ground mat but again they vary depending conditions. I have ultra light ones for fine conditions and a heavy duty insulated one for cold wet conditions. My sleeping bag is a -7 deg bag (extreme rating) and with the Sol it adds 5 degs so -12 degs. my sleeping bag weighs 950gms my Hyperlite pack weighs 950gms and my fly with pegs is 450gms. With ultra light you must sacrifice comfort somewhere.

Hey, I really like what you're doing on your channel. I enjoyed having a look at the gear you're carrying. I've been rummaging through my gear lately as well trying to get as light as possible. keep up the good work. Hey what's your opinion on the Tikka CTR in 308 for backcountry hunting?
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 4 года назад
Tom cheers for the encouragement always good to hear. The Tikka rifles are great for hiking and general hunting but the CTR isn't the model I would pick. CTR stands for compact tactical rifle and therefor will have a heavy profile barrel and looking at the weights they are tipping the scales 1kg more than the Tikka T3 Lite. For me if I was to pick a backcountry rifle weight is a factor so dropping 1kg is significant so I would pick the likes of the Lite, superlite or the hunter models in the Tikka. Now for the 308w, if Sambar are your target animal than I would recommend a bigger caliber in the 7mm rem mag and up. This is because Sambar are big strong deer that life in dense bush that can make them extremely hard to find if they run along way after the hit. There is no substitution for bullet placement regardless of caliber but having an exit hole is my preferred outcome which usually results in a blood trail smaller calibers struggle to completely penetrate a sambar stag. My recommendation would be for a Tikka T3 300wsm for a great backcountry rifle. If recoil sensitive than the 308w will do a good job if shots are kept to less that 250m.
@markfermor1501
@markfermor1501 3 года назад
Great video thx. Question..I'm starting in the Sambar world and went for a 30-06. After seeing some of your videos I'm thinking maybe a even larger calibre would be suited for the bigger ones?
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 3 года назад
yes and no .... 06 will do the job as good as any but if you want a specific sambar stag rifle 338 is where its at. They can soak up a lot of energy and have an amazing reputation of running with no blood and because of the terrain they live in can be extremely have to find

@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 3 года назад
Hey Aa Bo simply 10x is better for glassing longer distance than 8x . Imo 8x is perfect for stalking style hunting maybe with a bow or short range rifle hunting. 10x gives you more detail at those longer ranges.

Hey Amy good to finally hear from one of my women viewers which make up 10% of my total views according to RU-vid. The bino harness is made by Marsupial gear which ironically is a USA company. I can't recommend them enough its awesome. My Leupold VX6 has a lot of features I love like the illumination its the best I've seen, the glass is brilliant the only thing is the turret locks aren't as locked as I'd prefer you definitely need to check them especially the windage when you've had a tumble or have been carrying on your pack/ shoulder. Really like like the video, I have the Fierce Fury in 338LM too. Would love to know what your reloading recipe is for your 270gr loads, I'm having a heck of a time getting my load fine tuned. Hoping this gun will serve me well on my elk hunt in a couple weeks.
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures 3 года назад
Hey Derrick I love the fierce but I've had to tune it a fair bit also. First thing i suggest is to bed the action. I now know of 3 fierce that were not shooting that after I recommended bedding are all shooting excellent groups. I have 2 loads for the 270gn ELD-X but as always these are only safe in my gun so use cation when using any load data. You will find that the Lap will destroy the plastic tips if loading the mag full then shooting. The recoil impulse throws the rounds around in the mag. I single feed for long rand shooting to avoid damaging the tips. My pet load is hot so work up to it if you are going to use it. 93.75gns ADI 2225 Lapua brass Fed 215 primer seated to COAL 3.81" this has a ES of 7fps in my gun and a avy of 2962fps. The other load is 91gns ADI 2225 at COAL 3.72" which just feeds from mag but like i said the tips will be damaged worse with every shot.My mag feed rounds are 225gn PP SN Woodleigh doing 3010fps.
