How to grow tomatoes from seed at home. My tomato vines grew very large by the end of the season like I never had experienced in my organic vegetable home garden before. They loved this spot in the garden and produced many tomatoes, including a cherry tomato variety that I saved seed from a natural crossing in my previous garden.

I find it so cool how all these completely different tomato varieties were bred from a few tiny wild tomato varieties.

That's fascinating about the wasps and the tomato hornworm! I'd love to learn more about how that ecosystem develops in your garden.

Water is so vital. We bought a place in a region that typically has good, snowy winters and reliable rainfall. The property also has a well. However, in the three years since we have been here, snowfall has been almost nonexistent, just 2cm last winter, and we have been in drought conditions. Our well, it turns out, is seasonal. 😑 It is so important to hedge your bets and have multiple rain-collection/storage methods in place. And yeah, keep the soil covered. Beautiful video as always, Siloé.

Thanks. Living in the east coast I forget just how vital water is.

Have you ever grown the cherry tomato variety Snow White? It's the sweetest cherry tomato I've ever grown. When ripe they are said to be white in color, however I think they are more like a cream color to be more accurate. They are very prolific. You should give them a try sometime. They add beautiful color to a salad, and are usually a conversation starter because of their unique color.

Haven’t tried growing that yet. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip

Beautiful video as usual! I have abundant tomato bushes as well. I also had a tomato hornworm complete with those wasp eggs. After some research I learned about the benefits of leaving it there. Last year I wasn't as educated about them. I thought the eggs belonged to the hornworm itself.

My tomato bush is so crazy this year I can't believe it, truth is I don't even eat tomatoes. But I just keep giving them away to everybody in the neighborhood. I really tried to let things ripen on the vine, the flavor is always better.

I don't usually have hornworms either, but this year I had one completely decimate an entire pepper plant including 3 large almost mature peppers. I did get a UV flashlight to keep an eye on things and found another hornworm (not the same one) that was infected by parasitic wasps. It's amazing how you don't even notice them until they're about 4" long and eat an entire plant overnight. They must grow really fast!

I haven't had one destroy my plants yet, so I've always considered their damage minor.

There seems to be a big misidentification problem with the hawkmoth, which is the final version of the hornworm.....and the white striped sphinx moth. It's difficult to get people to understand the difference and not execute the sphinx moth out if fear it will lay eggs and create hornworms.

Nice tomato plant but with lots of foliage and little fruit. We want tomatoes not leaves.

This cherry tomato plant was a wild crossing I saved seeds from for flavor. There are varieties that produce tons of tomatoes, so the right variety matters a lot. I did get a lot of tomatoes from the other black brandywine vine. Since they are indeterminate, they continue producing every week instead of a huge harvest once.
@miamivicemami
@miamivicemami 3 года назад
What is indeterminate? ^^^^
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 3 года назад
Indeterminate tomatoes will theoretically grow on forever if not killed by frost or disease, like a vine, putting down adventitious roots along the stem, hugging the ground. Determinate tomatoes grow only to a set height and then stop producing and die.

I apologies, I would like to ask why are you not ttearing off the young unnecessary shoots. Are you doing that for some reason? Now you growing leaves, not fruits. Thank you.
