The scene where Gandalf dies is not at the bottom of where they fell. Rather, Gandalf chased the Balrog into some tunnels, and up the so-called Endless Stair, which goes from the very bottom of the caves to Durin's Tower at the tallest peak of the mountains above; the currently living Dwarves had almost ceased believing that this staircase existed at all, because it had been lost for so long.

Sam calls him "Mr. Frodo" for two very important reasons that the movie never addresses 1) Frodo is Sam's employer - Sam was employed by Bilbo as a child to be their gardener. 2) Frodo is almost 30 years older Than Sam. Just as the ring extended the life of Golem and Bilbo, it did the same for Frodo while in his possession. From the time Bilbo leaves and Frodo leaves to meat Gandolf, 30 years are supposed to have passed. Now while Sam grew up normally Frodo stayed looking like his 30-ish self. He's actually closer to 60 years old. The same age Bolbo was when Gandolf recruited him for the events of The Hobbit. Although as I said the movies skirt over those facts.

Your numbers are a bit off. Frodo and Bilbo have the same birthday. Frodo turned 33 - the "coming of age" for hobbits - when Bilbo turned 111. Sam was far older than 3 at the time. Frodo is maybe about five years older than Sam. 17 years pass between Bilbo's leaving and Frodo's leaving. Frodo is 50 at that time. And Merry is younger than Sam, and Pippin is younger than Merry.

Tolkien didn't get the idea of the dead marshes from a literal marsh. It was from the artillery craters that littered the landscape between the enemy lines, usually referred to as 'No Man's Land'. The craters had bodies of dead soldiers in them ,and would often fill up with rain or ground water.

The trouble with the MCU is that those movies basically said "if a movie does not contain and is based on HYPE, its BAD". In the books, Sam's "Mister Frodo" is "Master Frodo," because Sam is just his gardener, a servant, whereas Frodo is essentially a member of the gentry, therefore master to Sam the servant. Merry and Pippin only say "Frodo" because they are also higher class than Sam. This was changed in the movies (and in the animated LOTR) presumably because it is very old-fashioned in Britain, was on its way out even when Tolkien was writing it, and because no one outside of Britain would be aware of the custom. Ursula K. LeGuin, the author, said it bothered her so much that every time she read it she wanted to found the Shire Socialist Party.

It's not about what you watch first. Holden told her in Fellowship part 1 that LotR came before all of that so everything you think LotR has ripped off was in fact ripped off from LotR if you want to say it like that. It's peoples ignorance that makes them say "this reminds me of that one thing in GoT or HP or this was ripped off from that" even if someone told them beforehand that LotR came first. People just say that because they don't understand that fantasy, sci-fi etc are genres that contain franchises with similar characteristics. So they relate it to the things they do know to try and help themselves understand it better which doesn't work usually and they aren't aware how annoying this can be for people watching who know this stuff. Every idiot can see that Harry Potter Elves and Lord of the Rings Elves are not the same thing. Same with Snow White Dwarves and Dwarves in Fantasy like LotR, Warcraft, the Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age. Also things like Star Wars and Star Trek have similar names on top of that. Problem is people just aren't aware of those things like we are and instead of having a complete open mind and going into it without prejudices they instantly compare it to "similar" things without knowing how similar (or rather un-similar) they actually are. The best way to do this is to wipe your mind clean before watching and let the movie / series do the explaining and only if you understood it you can say huh this is a bit like this and that but different and help yourself understand it better through that but not the first thing you do is comparing and stay in that mindset. I guess all of us compare movies and series with each other but it's just dumb to say oh Gandalf is a Wizard? So he is just like Dumbledore! Because being a Wizard can have a hundred different meanings depending on context and franchise. A video game? D&D? HP Wizardry? LotR Wizardry? Whats the difference between Wizards, Mages, Sorcerers and Warlocks etc. It's kinda sad to see people have so little knowledge about stuff like that that they think Harry Potter for example is the one film where all Wizards come from because it's a film about Wizards. Every franchise is it's own microcosmos and even if they have similarities to other franchises it's not the same at all and most of the times not even compareable. Weirdly I never see someone watch Harry Potter and say oh this is just like this one Micky Mouse Cartoon where he becomes a Wizard with brooms and shit.

After they hit the underground lake the Balrog (which was described to have turned into a "thing of slime" after entering the lake) took off and Gandalf pursued him back to the Dwarish tunnels of Moria and up "The Endless Stair" to the peak of the mountain which Moria resides in, Celebdil. The scene with Gollum chasing the fish, the water wasn't cgi. They had to thaw the ice out of the stream, then Andy Sirkis went splashing down the freezing stream in a mocap suit.

Soooo annoying when people compare anything fantasy based to LOTR. Every time I introduce someone to LOTR I START by making it abundantly clear that LOTR was written in 1948. It is the baseline for all fantasy to come after. You will see elements and characters that remind you of other characters in other fantasy content. That is because they have taken elements and expanded them from LOTR. So pleaaasseeeee….plllllleeeeeaaassseeeee spare me the comparing stuff to LOTR like it is copying other stuff. It is EXACTLY the opposite. And if you can’t get that basic fact in your head right now, we are not watching these movies together. Is that clear? If I hear even ONE Harry Potter or GOT reference, I am turning it off and I’m done!!

When they shot the scene where Smeagol was swimming down the stream to catch the fish the area was all snow(it was winter when they were shooting) so the crew had to melt all of it before they shot. The Andy Serkis had to shoot that scene either 7 or 9 times in the freezing water. So all the splashes you see were caused by Andy.

Aragorn is a Ranger. In Fantasy lore, Rangers are a class of warrior that are ALMOST as in tune with Nature as Elves. Rangers are natural hunters and can read tracks in the wild almost like a book. Army Rangers often exhibit some of these traits; like an affinity for surviving in the wild. One example is Rambo; who is an army Ranger and is extremely comfortable in the wilderness hunting down his enemies OR food with nothing but a knife. For the purposes of the Fantasy Genre though Rangers seem Hyper intuitive about what happened when tracking. Almost like they can exactly replay events from tracks left behind. It's this perspective that the movie is showing us of Aragorn's skills.

There's actually more to it than that. Háma, the doorward and leader of the Royal Guard (The one who is killed by the ambushing warg rider) recognizes Gandalf from his many previous visits to Meduseld, and is fully aware that the staff is not just his walking stick. He goes along with Gandalf's rude, however, because it's a perfectly good excuse to let him in with his staff without going against the king's orders. Why? Because he, like everyone else at the court, hopes Gandalf will help rid them of Grima.
