My Go To Paints for Miniatures 

You like those first two paints so much, you coordinated your outfit to match them! Well done.

when I started, I just purchased GW. I hate those pots, then played with vallejo but we can never get them here. Now I moved on to scale75, pro acryl and kimera. I work on thinning them down and get better and better. I do have a little army painter, war paints that are for the airbrush as I don't want to mess up on the thinning... I know I need to look at some contrast, but I may wait for the xpress colours

Love how your first three colors are also echoed in your flannel, desk and shirt and side light on your face!

18:30 Yellow and red Oxide are naturally matt and opaque, which makes them quite unique. Hobby brands loves to mix them into their paints for making them more opaque without using white/grey/black pigments which are also opaque. I think one of the reasons some paints have separation issues is because the iron pigments are heavier than most other pigments, so they sink to the bottom of the bottle. A great example of this phenomenon are the Liquitex ink versions of the pigments, which separate completely and very fast too. Luckily these can be easily shaking.

I really like how close to eachother many of your favourite paints are. It really shows a (deliberately) limited spectrum,showing off your style!

It's kind of a very special use, but I've found that Vallejo's Dark Rubber works great when drybrushed over black when trying to do a black leather. It gives that slightly brownish tint that just looks so good.

Ahh a fellow enjoyer of Scale 75 paints ;) They can be annoying to deal with, you have to shake them till your arm falls off, but the payoff is usually great.

Pro acryl coal black is possibly my favorite paint ever

One important thing to note about the oil colors: Get the Artist variant. NOT the "winton" brand. Both are by Windsor and Newton. The Artist line has finer pigments and is better suited for washes. It's a bit more expensive but you can bascially produce enough wash to last a lifetime from one tube anyway.

And I think ninjon was inspired by vince's one now I think about it. Also there's probably a stone grey equivalent in the ak interactive 3rd gen line, there are so so so many off whites and off greys. Most my favorite ones of those currently are from there. (3rd gen ak is basically a straight upgrade to model color, think model color but better and with none of the downsides). I mean you've covered most of my favorite scalecolour paints. I'd add instant potion spectral wolf, something about it that I just love for uses that aren't what it's meant for. Pretty much any ak interactive 3rd gen paint, rarely is a whole line such a pleasure to paint with, but some stand outs for me would be pastel violet, burnt red, british khaki, sahara yellow, warm grey, burnt red. Scale color artist heavy body black is my favorite black. Tho I love the paints in general for painting base. Kimera cold yellow and violet are great, violet I find very dark but a pleasure to mix. I have essentially replaced all my GW and vallejo model colors with ak interactive and scale 75. For gold/silver/etc paints: Vallejo metal color aluminium, green stuff metallic pigments - gold, SC75 golds/metals (that I mix into vmc aluminium). For other stuff I think it's only really just the following left: Scale 75 fluorescent paints, Green stuff world lime green fluorescent paint, Liquid pigments from GSW. And that's it, surprising how much overlap we have, then again you are the reason I tried oil paints.

Vallejo Sun Yellow, Scale 75 Arbuckle Brown, Pro Acryl Transparent Purple

My favorite paints are Kimera: Black, White, Phthalo Green Blue Shade, Phthalo Blue Green Shade, Phthalo Blue Red Shade, Violet, Magenta, Red Oxide, Red, Orange, Warm Yellow, Cold Yellow, Yellow Oxide. That is all. I use them for everything.

The thing I've been leaning on a lot lately are contrast style paints, but specifically the more transparent ones, the pigment being weaker or I guess not covering quite so totally has been a big help for me with glazing or heavy washing (lazily i guess). My favourite of the bunch is definitely citadel magos purple, it's not a very strong purple, and it kind of sucks to use by itself (the colour is like the stains on your fingers from eating too many blackberries, pinkish but still purple) but it's been a big help in shading flesh colour paint to a standard I can be happy with rather than just avoiding it whenever I can. Just also need a secondary dry (not drybrush) brush to wick up the paint when it gets a bit too excessive.

Kicking off with desaturated blue green greys, I'm going to place my bets that rust oranges are going to be next...

I am an AK interactive fanboy! I really like the consistency and flow of their paints.

Livery Green/Yellow Green is also called Chartreuse and Vince Venturella recently did a good video about its uses.

I watched this expecting to come away with new paints to investigate but it turns out we have basically identical taste in paint brands haha. On my left is pro acryl, kimera, SC Artist and my oils. Behind me is SC, SC75 fantasy and games, a few very specific vallejo shades (including the Nocturna dead flesh, purple and red sets which are AMAZING for painting those things). I use the same primers, the same metallics (though I also use AK true metal). I think the only paints in this video I dont already have in my regular rotation are the golden so-flat. (Kind of put off by the toxicity of them. I don't want to worry about that when airbrushing or licking a brush subconsciously) The main difference I did find watching this is I do love vibrant colours when I paint. I tend to use a mostly muted selection and then one vibrant colour on key details that leaps out at you.

your video presentation is top notch. and by this i mean your chosen palette of colours for objects in this video, ie: table top, scarf, jacket and lighting are - at least im my mind - very representative of every mini i have watched you paint. just my observation or mindless over analysis, lol.

Love anthracite grey. Use it for my Krieg

I love Scale 75 Artist paints. For overlapping layers and blending they are hard to beat. Having some varnish on hand of various sheens is handy with these matte paints. I also love Vallejo.

I'm new to mini painting, so honestly I've just been using apple barrel craft paint.

It's always good to know what are the paints, that someone you admire uses in everyday paint jobs. What he or she likes about them. Aaand, for someone who said "purple" so many times in this video (didn't count, but you say it a lot, and show it by mixing it on the camera), it's interesting, there is no purple paint, you showed us... Seems like you like to shade it, lighten it, darken it, mix it and see it in some other paints hues, but you don't really like any purple paint enough to consider it a part of this "favorite set". Still love the style of your videos! Great work and thank you.

On the subject the finish of the paint, I often use a drop of AK ultra matte, instead of water/medium to dilute glossier paints. It really helps bring everything together when I'm using paints from different brands on the same piece.

U good boy Mr Alex! 🥰🐶 my favrit paints is my vallejo paints. I have mainly them and scale 75c I’ve had lots gw paint in the past but don’t like the pots and prices, other than those things they pretty good, but coz vallejo are great prices and in good bottles and available locally they the best, scale 75 I had to order them all online so prices and availability weren’t as good as vallejo. The gw paints I do have is technical paints, I like the technical ones coz they are used straight from the bottle so the pots aren’t a bad thing, but the price is still very high, they do give good effect tho 🥰🐶 I excited to see what army painter come up with in the near future, and I even more excited to get some vallejo xpress paints when I can find them locally 🥰🐶🔥👌

my favourtie brand is @TheArmyPainter, due to it be cost effective and sure 4 yrs ago it was tough to use but like any new tool in your bag ya need to practice and use it more and more to learn and understand how it works , now with AP now taking over my paint shelf GW has been left in the dark only to be replaced by Vallejo as I found a local store here who sells Vallejo for a buck less then AP , so I now have a new tool to learn and master .

African Shadow is a great undercoat for the Scalecolor Violet when you only let violet get opaque on the highlights. I get super rich purple that way.

That look of love on your face for the 3D printer kind of scared me, yet made me want to watch even more. Lol😅👍 I really like your choice of colors. I too like the more subdued colors. I'm enjoying learning about how to get desired effects with acrylics. I've used Humbrol for most of my life and love them. But these new acrylics are just incredible. Edit: that last bit of advice about what works for you is the best advice. Painting miniatures is personal for most of us. And commission painters still put their style and personality into the job. 👍

GW: Khorne Red VMC: Dark Sea Blue, Black Army Painter: Gorgon Hide AK 3rd Gen: White Vallejo Metal Color: Gunmetal Grey

In no particular order when it comes to how much I like the, but very much based on how often I use them. - Signal Black (Molotow) as my preferred primer through the airbrush; has a slight brown bias, which is very useful for painting warm color - An artist white ink (any brand will do, but have been using Royal Talens Amsterdam lately) - Rhinox Hide (Citadel); unique dark brown with a purple undertone - Metal Color Steel (basically any silver from Vallejo’s Metal Color range is great) - Burnt Umber (PBr7) oil paint for making washes (any artist grade will do) - AK’s 3rd gen Black; best black for brush painting so far; Kimera black is darker and might overtake it - Brown ink OOP (Citadel); best looking wood color I have come across - Sombre Grey (Vallejo Game Color); great rather unique grey with a violet undertone after more testing and comparing - Chestnut Ink OOP (Citadel); really like orange-brown hues in general; Vallejo Skin Wash ink is also great - Kimera’s The Red and Magenta - Inktense Wood (Scale75); for painting a more yellowish wood - Black ink (Vallejo); preferred for airbrushing because of it satin instead of glossy finish of other inks; usually mixed into other paints - Earth (Vallejo Game Color); great for painting weathered bone, glazed over a zenthinal undercoat - Ice Yellow (AK’s 3rd gen); great universal highlight color - Agrax Earthshade (Citadel); mainly used for bases; also loving (a thinned down) Wildwood - Using Liquitex artist ink and Citadel Contrast paints a lot; almost all of them are good Pretty different from your selection Alex. Your love for matt finishes clearly shines through. So does mine for a more satin finish. That being said, I do mix in ultra matt varnish quite often and I try to get a something in between a matt and a satin finish.

Lamp black takes awhile to dry. Mars black will dry much quicker due to the iron oxide pigment. Just fyi. Love your work!

That oil madder paint is literally the exact colour I've been hunting for from acrylics forever. If I have to go to oil paints to get it I'll do it!

I really enjoy Molotow brand spray paint and personally the premium line has been by far the best spray primer I've used behind airbrushing and the Urban Fine Art line is amazing for being a little indoor friendly as it's acrylic paint and you can get some interesting results with doing a zenital coat and then go in and blend the colours with a brush. I personally use NY Fat caps on my cans.

Fascinating. Thank you for your insights. I have over 130 paints across four brands just so I have the colors for specific color schemes and recipes. I can't even imagine how much more paint I will have to buy to find my go to favorites. 😅

when it comes to thinning paints down, Instar's water+ is a magic tool

I watched, Ninjon's, Vince Venturella, and others speaking to this about what paints they use. And yours is the first one where you shared what YOU personally choose and it was great that you said it is important for painters to identify their own personal style and preferences. My color palette of choice is much like yours, I like dark grittier sci fi feeling in my work, so I use a lot of payne's grey, teals, oranges and metallics. But I do add more blues and greens into my arsenal. I think I will be needing to check out the Golden So Flats because it seems they provide the greatest utility in mixing and still utilizing pigments other paints are compatible with. Again I appreciate your video and the presentation was well done. Maybe in the future I'll do a "My paint choices" video and hopefully add to the library for other artists to enjoy. And hopefully I can help someone on their journey as you have helped us.

In general: contrast paints, I've been using them for something similar to slap chop since they came out and they massively improve my finished output. My two specific favorites are Druchii Violet (the older version, I'm on my fourth bottle) and leviathan purple which is really close to the OOP citadel midnight blue.

OK. I don’t know why I haven’t thought of that, but when you talked at 28:00 about using black pigment powder because there should be a shadow under the model it blew my mind. Of COURSE that should be there. But…I haven’t seen anyone else say that and I’ve never thought about it. What a genius way to add more realism and depth in such an easy way. THANK YOU!!!

Keep an eye on new paints too. Everybody and their uncle seems to be launching a new paint range right now, Green Stuff World Metals, Vallejo Express and now TT combat on Kickstarter.

For me it's Scale 75 and Pro Acryl and some other brands colors here and there.

I tend to stick to AK and Vallejo paints, mainly because of the fact that things like Kihmera, Pro Acryl, and those are too expensive to build a collection of. But here are some paints I use in almost every project and how I use them. Tamiya enamel panel liners (usually the darker colors) very useful and just a neat trick to get perfect panel lines without too much effort. Vallejo Model Color: Black (just a nice covering black), Chocolate Brown and Cavalry Brown (great start for any leather), Dark Sand (useful for most highlights and mixing with other paints), Refractive Green 70.890 (perfect as a military green or as a dark green in general). Panzer Aces: Highlight Flesh. Whenever my sci-fi soldiers have their hands or face showing I cover it in this and the use Speedpaint Crusader Skin, this gives me all the highlights I need withouth having to put them in afterwards. AK Interactive: Ice Yellow (works with any color you want brighter and is a nice off-white), Basalt Grey & German Field Grey (perfect darker grey that isn't just the regular flat dark grey. One is looks like basalt and the other is a bit brownish - is nice with options), Buff (amazing dark warm creme with a hint of bone in it), Pale Sand (similar use to Ice Yellow but warm instead of cold), and best of all Frog Green (is nice as is, on reptiles, or thinned down and put on top of a lamp/eye lens painted white to give a nice glowing green). SpeedPaints: Crusader Skin (because it's easy and I'm lazy and my minis usually don't have enough skin for me to bother with other colors). Lastly, Citadel: Old Nuln Oil and Old Agrax Earthshade. Mephiston Red (is a nice red, not too dark not too bright, will change to a Vallejo when it runs out)

Lately, I've been using liquitex acrylic gouaches for a LOT of my painting, rather than "proper" mini paints. I just really like the consistency -- they're super matte, mix well, and have the right amount of transparency for me straight from the bottle. I'm not a pro by any stretch, but I've found these great for mixing (both together to make new colors and into the usual vallejo / army painter / city-dell to amp saturation or add tinge).

SoFlat Red Violet and Red Oxide are two of my favorites. I moved mainly to Liquitex Gouache and Golden SoFlat and High Flow because the nearest craft store is an hour away, vs 3 hours for a hobby store (and it's been really hit and miss w Amazon for hobby paint, especially regarding shipping). And the bonus is that my wife never minds when I'm putting a craft store order together, because she usually needs something from there too :-)

Hmmmm...I wonder where the magicks of his personal painting styles and choices for his passion diverge from real-life choices? Regardless, it's all pretty darn neat...warm (despite the 'bluiness') and well, kinda cozy. It's one of the reasons I follow...just one and not primary, but as a part of a great whole that is always engaging, entertaining and informative. Once again, well made and well met. Cheers!

Great video. Gave me two or three paints to try and see how I like their flow, feel on the brush, etc. And I'll have to try that technique for eyes. I prefer to mix colours starting from a basic split palette, but when a brand has the exact perfect colour and/or consistency that I'll want to use again and again, it's so much more convenient to have it ready to go every time.

What a great vid, again! Very revealing of the Alex painting style by what's not in there, very individual, very subjective, and the clear and very worthwhile message comes through perfectly. That our paint is absolutely a subjective, situational, one size does not fit many folks at all matter. My own favourites are actually inks, vivid artist inks bursting with hue and pigment. Even more revealing would be that my favourite paint isn't those either, it's matte medium, I use it more even than ink or oils, at the moment it's Golden's, but for years it was vallejo with a touch of AK ultra matt varnish when required. There! Controversial! 🍺

what an in depth and comprehensive video... wow, im impressed my dude... I have spend a few years in the hobby, and I started with Vallejo, it was the only brand available to me at the time but its a good brand, they make solid paint. Then i got sucked into the hobby and now have amassed a huge collection of paint ranging from GW to to Pro Acryl to inks and washes, oils... ive struggled with scale 75, but they take some getting used to, same with Kimera. I love the pigments though and how rich the colors are.. thanks for sharing the video... very nicely done!

This was a lovely selection of tasteful paints - a lot of food for thought re matching one's goals with one's paint choice (as long as one...currently realises what one's painting goals are/those don't change into something completely different as one paints more and tries more paints) - also the wholesome love between you and your 3D printer was a heart warming sight, I hope it realises how lucky a 3D printer it is - they can be somewhat fickle and stand offish

I’m glad to hear that Pro Acryl has a nice smooth feel; a local shop has just started carrying that brand, and I haven’t had a chance to use it yet.

Love the video, I've watched both miniac and ninjons videos, and you showed a very different way on thinking about and using paints. Thanks for another relaxed train of thought, and just subtly saying paint to your strengths and not others.

I mostly use Vallejo and Citadel since that's what I have the most access to. Some of my favorites to use are Neutral Grey and Iraqi Sand from Model Color, Sombre Grey, Dead Flesh, Ghost Grey, and Vomit from Game Color, and Seraphim Sepia and Nilakh Oxide from Citadel.

Hey man, I appreciate your content. I've found your enclave yesterday and checked out a few videos and I'm a fan of your different (slow methodical, live, ramble) delivery. It comes across as very real without cutting out the quality and for that I think you are very talented. Excited to check out more of your vids moving forward. I appreciate the video and very good explanation of your choices for miniature paints. It was a fantastic watch, I put some paint on my bane blade, and you also made me reaffirm my decision to not go in on more specialist paints, they definitely have their own applications and uses. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for some of your recommendations next time I'm up to get some more paints to round out my collection. Especially the magenta paint, I've seen that one come up a couple times.

Very interesting that you talked about the texture of the different paints. I've been noticing a lot how much of a difference that makes to your next paint layer and I haven't heard anyone else talk about that. Particularly since I started with contrast and speedpaints for base layers, the primer finish is everything.

100% going to try that liquid white pigment next time I am in the market to buy paint. Love my drybrush undercoat. I personally really love to use red and black leather from Scale 75.

Two things before I even finish watching the video. First, that was the first ad I watched from beginning to end, can't really explain why but it was nice from you. Secondly, that red oil paint is pretty similar to red wine from Ak 3rd gen acrylics, give it a try maybe? Cheers from Spain

Great video Alex! We have many of the same favorites. I love Scale75 Black Forest and Iroko and find a way to work Abyssal Blue into everything almost (if only the rim of the bases). Also use ProAcryl Mahogany for most of my leathers, its such a great brown (Rhinox Hide is great too). Thanks for the continual great content.

You should try Polycolor the ones in glass jars. great paint very flat and for 10- busks you get a lot of paints compared to miniature paints. Try them and do a vid if you like them. The company is in Italy so Italian and Spanish painters use them a lot.

If you have the Kimera expansion set, theoretically you can mix a matching Purple Madder paint with Purple (PV 19) and Royal Brown (PBR 25), which according to W&N is what they put in there. Whether you can capture the feeling of that color, I'm not sure. I don't have the expansion set unfortunately but when I get one I'll give it a go :)

A lovely insight as to what you lean towards for your colours, and as you pointed out a lot more on the muted side on the tones, which is both interesting and understandable in equal measure, given the aesthetics you've gone for in your videos. Equally, a comfortable spread of manufacturers, nice to see you're happy to try out more than a singular company, even if one or two are more appreciated than others :) Personally, I lean towards Vallejo, AK Interactive and Citadel paints are what I go to for my own projects. This is just preference though, and thanks to yourself I've been looking at other methods for painting minis and other companies, although I am not confident enough to give oil paints a shot yet I must admit. I have a terrible idea for a project that will be fun to test down the line, but regardless thank you for another great video, keep up the excellent work :)

Nice one. I chuckled a little, cause many of my go to paints are the same as yours. I'd say about 70%. Same goes for paint brands. I am finding myself using more and more the SoFlat paints, for pretty much everything. I am using them to mix my own contrast-like paints as foundation layers, then mix them to use them as layer paints, glazes and even tints, because they can be unbelievably well thinned down and flow really nicely off the brush in any state, even straight out of the pot.

Recently trialed some Scalecolor Artist colours at a local event and was pleasantly surprised by the coverage, application and flow (the brushes were in a poor state - almost completely destroyed) and an ever so slightly slower dry time which made the absence of a wet palette less of an issue. A prince amongst paints, will definitely start cycling go-to colours from their range into my collection.

Can I ask you to do a video about your lighting and camera setup? Your videos look excellent. I know, it's not miniatures related, but still... :)

Anthracite Grey is just such a versatile colour... If anyone asked me what my most used paint is, that's it. It made me chuckle that you also had it first.

I haven't tried Scale 75 paints yet, but I'm a huge fan of AK-Interactive at the moment. I'm wanting to replace all of my Army Painter (and even some of my Vallejo) paints I've collected over the years because I just prefer the quality of AK-Interactive so much. I'll have to give Scale 75 a try.

So far, being a new painter, I’m mainly using Citadel paints for virtually everything as a lot of tutorials use those paints. i want to get Duncan Rhode’s Two Thin Coats paints. I think part of this is getting some of the colours close to the box art I see on many miniatures. But when it comes to the Ravaged Star Veil Touched (due in March ‘23), there’s no basis for any colour so will have to actually use my imagination a bit. 😊 I am interested in using Oil washes though.

I am fascinated by how you own many of the same paints as I do and yet you use them in very different ways. I have used Moonray Flesh for example but I rarely think to use it other than to highlight flesh. I think that while I own a great deal of paints (I've started to drift from Citadel to Scale 75 in recent years) I am using them in different ways. I quite often use paints straight from the bottle or transfer from paint to paint in very slight hops. You seem to know exactly what colour you wish to use and will mix wildly different paints to get the results you desire. I think I need to reflect not on which paints you use but how you use them.

I notice in this video that your English sounds smoother and more comfortable. Your English was always excellent, but I wonder if making videos and watching them when you edit has enabled some practice.

I like an oil paint called Indian yellow. It looks like a yellow curry stain. It's made from the urine of cows that only eat mangos. No it doesn't smell funny.)) It looks bland out of the tube but when thinned its extremely vibrant and rich. It's completely transparent so it makes a great glaze.

For us Swedes, those red and yellow iron oxides, thats what we know as Falu rödfärg :-)

I really like the idea of print on demand even if I do have my own 3D-printer but it seems to be shipped from the UK which really sucks (for us outside the UK since they left EU). Anyways, great video, allways nice to get some colors inspiration :)

Hey Alex! Lovely colors. I just bought a ton of the new GameColor line (let's see how they go) but I'm already eyeing some Scale75 Artist and normal colors. I'm still new to this but the paint hoarding seems like a hobby within a hobby, no? Thanks once again for this awesome video.

Aaagh. I don’t have time to be watching RU-vid videos now so what happens? Alex published another video and there goes 35 minutes that I can’t spare! 😉. Plus a minute or two to tumb type this. Okay. Of course I can, and I will and I’ll do it again. Oh btw, my favorites are Scale 75 Red Leather and Black Leather, Vallejo Light Grey, AK Clear Doped Linen (seriously) and (gotta add an oil), Abteilung 502 Burnt Umber. 👍👍👍

I like that the paint selection appears to be for specific purposes and your one exception of a colour. I like also you have grouped say thick vs thin 2 paints that use the same pigment type, there is much utility in that. You seem to lean toward a "Anders Zorn" limited palette which has that classic dark painting look. I have expanded my paints to an unwise amount of variety. I am trying to focus on the single pigment types, identify them and possibly identify the hobby paints that do not list the pigments. You identified as well as a couple painters I follow that the "zinc" based white paints seems to preserve the colour (like red becoming lighter red not pink) so makes an excellent mixing paint to highlight / lighten very good for wet blending. Thanks, your enthusiasm is appreciated and the detailed explanations.
