Crate training is always a good idea, even when you don’t crate your dogs at home. It’s mainly beneficial when you have to take them to the vet, a groomer, etc. where they might end up in a cage for a period of time while waiting. Our big guy is not crate trained at all (got him at 3 and he is way too afraid of them) and we can’t leave him anywhere at all.

We crate trained until the puppy was older and completely potty trained. Then she slept outside our daughters room. It was the craziest thing. She taught herself to be my daughter’s seizure dog and she would alert us when a seizure was about to happen or was happening. We had talked about sending her to get trained as a medical dog but then she went and taught herself. We definitely did not put her in the crate after that :-). I have no idea why I just told that story. Memory lane I suppose….

What I would actually do right away is put a crate (without the door on it) in with her with the setup you already have and make it super cozy so she likes going in and that way she’ll be used to the crate when you move her into your room later. Crate training is amazing for keeping puppies out of trouble and giving them a safe place to relax and sleep

We crate trained our black lab puppy, which REALLY helped with potty training. He cried a couple times to go potty every night for a bit and we would bring him out, but he ended up being fully house trained at 3/4 months old and he’s now 8 months with no accidents. He also loves his crate because it’s his safe space. I know it’s hard in the beginning but once they get used to the crate a couple nights, they will only make noise if they need to potty. Love your puppy content by the way ❤️

Crate training is 100% worth it especially with a golden. They will go in and out of major chewing phases where their entire goal in life is to chew up your house. The crate gives them a safe place to go when you can’t watch her. Also if you crate train her slowly and are patient (play the games, time limits when starting, snuggle puppy, etc) she will love it and go there optionally on her own over time.

Once my puppies were crate trained I kept the crate open and they could go in and out as they pleased. If they didn’t seem to go in it anymore, I would just pack it up and put it away. My last golden liked going in to nap or sleep so I left it up.

I don’t use a crate anymore at my home but my dog does use one when I take her to spend time with a family member while I am at work. She is in the crate for a couple hours until people wake up and set her free. I give her a kong with a treat inside and she takes a nap to pass time. I like that she still has crate experience in case of an emergency where it would be needed.

What I did with my dog when he was a puppy is I had a feeding schedule and water schedule. Whenever he would eat or drink I would let him outside to go potty and I would wait until he went potty then would go inside. This was very effective he doesn’t have any accidents and he lets me know when he has to go potty by either standing by door, getting my attention with a howl or bark. Also did crate training only at night time but I would let him go potty before I put him in crate then I would wake up early to take him out since he was a puppy.

i crate trained my now 8 month old puppy when i got her at 12 weeks old. it was bad for the first 2 weeks - getting up every few hours to let her outside. but after the initial 2 weeks, she began to prefer the crate. she still goes in at night and i don't have to worry about her wandering around the house getting into things or even pottying in the house. it trains them to hold their bladder overnight faster. after you get past that first few weeks, it's golden

Dogs generally love having a covered place to hide, and some really love sleeping in a crate at night. Some love sleeping in a dog bed or a human bed. Depends on the dog. Puppy training involves keeping them under control when you aren't there, and the kennel/puppy space isn't exactly fully enclosed. Yarrow is big enough where she could easily start crawling or jumping out abd exploring the house. I would personally recommend the crate when she's alone just until she's trained. Plus, she'll be safe there. If she wants to use it as she gets unto adulthood, that could be up to her. My last dog refused to sleep in my bed at night; she preferred the covered and enclosed comfort of her kennel. My other dogs hated it. Just depends on your training needs and the dog's personality as it gets older.

Crate training can be really helpful, it's like a den for the dog to make them feel secure and safe. My general rule though is if they aren't comfortable in the crate then don't force it. One dog loves it and still sleeps there, the other whined and whined. It isn't necessary but can be helpful for when you leave the house or need some space.

Hi Joey! About crate training: So for my dog, I crate trained her when she was young because it’s easier to train them then. Now she hardly goes in it but just in case it’s always good for her to be able to be in it and not feel scared. It is also a great potty training method and building up the amount of time they can hold in the need to go to the bathroom for drives and other things like that.

Crate training doesn't just help for when dogs need to stay in a crate. It also gives them a positive association with a safe "den" space. My rescue tends to run fairly anxious and "introverted", and has some fear issues with noises, and he intentionally seeks out his crate almost daily to hang out and recharge, instead of being stuck around people or situations he's uncomfortable or fearful in. As long as I leave the door open and have a cover over the top to make it dim and enclosed, it's actually his preferred nap location, to the point that when he is locked in it he just goes to sleep while I'm gone now. The main thing is it's important not to use the crate as a punishment or as something they only go in when you're leaving the house; that's how they develop a negative association with it and try to avoid it.

Crate training is the one thing I almost always recommend as a trainer. You really do not need to use it at home once you are comfortable with letting them roam, but it is helpful in so many situations. It might be that your dog needs to be crated at the vet or groomer or another place and dogs who have not been crate trained will often freak out or be nervous in those situations, while a crate trained dog knows that a crate is a safe space and will generally just settle in. In an emergency it will also help keep your dog calm if they need to be crated. For example if there were something to happen to you at home and emergency services have to enter your home, they will likely crate your dogs if they are in the way and if a crate is available. For my own dogs I do still have one crate out for each and they love their crate (they all know which is theirs). They often crate themselves when we have people over or so and they just want to relax away from the people. They also know no one will bother them in there, so sometimes they'll take an enrichment toy or so in there, so no other dog takes it (we do not allow the dogs to go into each other's crate). We no longer close the crates, as we don't need to, but I know that if it is needed they'll just be fine being in there.
@crossanddream2

We used to have our dog in a crate for whenever we left but my parents decided that she was trained enough to not destroy anything, there better whenever they weren't in the crate when we left since they whined and barked a lot compared to when they weren't in a crate. I don't really have a opinion but if they are trained not to destroy or pee or poop on stuff I feel like crate training isn't needed. And I honestly love Monty she reminds me of my own dogs who doesn't like going out in the rain, they'll also avoid the mud at all costs even if it means jumping off the side of the deck to avoid going in the mud. They also avoid touching a towel what was our over cleaning stuff that was put on the carpet to clean cat puke. They will hug there body against the wall to walk by and even jump over it. I think it's cause the spell since when it was sprayed with air freshener they had no problem walking on the towel it's honestly hilarious

Yarrow is already used to being inside that clear puppy pen so I'd just leave her there until she is big enough to jump out. Every time you take the other dogs out, take Yarrow out too so she learns the routine from the beginning. Especially take her out before bedtime since puppies pee a lot. If she pees in the crate, then she has to sleep in it since there's no room in the crate to go anywhere else.

She is BOTH OUTSIDE POTTY TRAINED AND PELLET TRAINED. I still have her pellets she uses it when it’s raining or when I’m at work. She only had 2 accidents on the floor and honestly it was my fault. She free roams around the house all day and at night she is completely trained to stay on her bed and sleep. She knows she’s not allowed to roam when it’s bed time. So it’s very possible to train your puppy without a crate. Just takes a lot of repetition. And having a potty pan in the house helps too to eliminate in house accidents when your at work or sleep etc. Good Luck

Other posts already explained the importance of crate training. However you could put the crate in the pen to let her get used to it. That way you don't have to close the crate immediately and she already feels safe being enclosed in her pen.

Love you,Joey! I do NOT believe in crate training. Using pads is the best way.

crate training is so good and really helps if your dog is anxious or you have other dogs as they have their own secure space which is also transportable which is another plus

We have a dog named Wolfgang who is part Husky, and part German shepherd. He LOVES his crate, and goes into it basically whenever he feels like it. He came from a bad home, though, so he may have used the crate to hide.

For the crate training thing, I have a husky and my mom and I crate trained her. It was not fun whatsoever but within a few weeks she was a lot better. So I think crate training dogs is beneficial if you leave often. But if you don't put ur dogs in crates I don't think it would be a big deal if you didn't crate train her. I suggest you get her at least familiar with a crate because if you have someone watching her for you or you have to transport her. This is just my opinion from my experiences, I don't know a lot about dogs and I am not a professional WHATSOEVER.
