I personally enjoyed AFO's backstory, really lent into Horikoshi's skill as a mangaka with all the horror stuff. I thought it was AFO also being influenced by his quirk in the same way Toga was, it was being used naturally even while he was in the womb killing his own mother. He was also born in a time of great civil unrest so that may have had a hand in it too

A lot of people like to think that they wouldn't fold, and die fighting like a Bakugo. Being in a situation where you're young, have people murdered in front of you, and told you and your loved ones will end the same way if you don't provide some information, you might bend the knee under the pressure of it all, at least initially.

Everyone’s a moral absolutist until they hear their moms bones break and her scream for her life followed by their dads. Honestly fear of pain is a hell of a lot worse than pain. So yeah everyone says they would say no. Till AFO and his crew begin their work.

Gentle is honestly one of my favorite characters in this series. I feel like he was either a lot weaker in school, had poor control, or some other factor was messing him up. Also there is a Hero GED type of test it gets mentioned in Vigilantes.

The problem with Toga is that she was being forced to be a normal civilian while suppressing her quirk completely. What she needed was to go to a hero school, they are more capable to help her with her quirk. The teacher of class B has a blood type quirk, so they are people with blood quirk that can be healthy people.

Great stream. Lots of good talking points, but I’d like to sort of ground the conversation a bit: This story, as we have it, encompasses a very specific set of time in-universe (around 2 years). When it started being published, in 2014, Horikoshi, the author, was 27 (MHA has almost been around 10 years. Damn that’s crazy). Also, Horikoshi is Japanese. I’m being ing up this real world context in order to make a point: The world of MHA as presented, an alternate version of the world Horikoshi lives in with certain fundamental differences, is undoubtedly informed by his own life experience (as well as research). Through this, he has utilized his imagination to create a world that is tailored made to explore topics like how society reacts and responds to shifts and changes, but he is just a human. He has biases, and his perspective is limited. And while there are many “universal” human experiences that nearly anyone can relate to, there are also many cultural specific experiences that say, people who live in Japan will understand but people in other countries might not. Also, there may be elements of the real world that Horikoshi didn’t know about, accidentally overlooked, or purposefully omitted because he didn’t think they didn’t added enough to the story he was trying to tell. Also, I’d like to mention that in-universe, there is criticism from heroes and other organizations (the Metahuman Liberation Front comes to mind) that the societal systems that currently exist in their world HAVEN’T caught up to quirks. So it is a function of the story that the world these people live in is not properly equipped for them to live in it. Now, vagueness and ambiguity can be treasure troves for fans, spaces rife for discussion, an invitation to engage with the subtle and nuances of the art, fertile ground for headcanon and all forms of fan expression, and I’m not trying to take that away from Tekking or anyone else. My point, standing up here on this soapbox, is to remind people: artists are human beings, and human beings are fallible, and so is our art. Sometimes vagueness is absolutely intentional, and sometimes it’s not, and while we, as fans, can certainly sink our claws into these cracks for any number of valid reasons, I think it’s important to not get lost in the weeds. MHA is a reflection of the world, through a specific cultural lens of a specific person, and as Horikoshi developed this story, he tried his best to accomplish the specific goals he wanted to. That means some of the fan talking points, while based on the source material, were things that were, for one reason or another, specifically excluded from the story or not given much attention. I know I’m rambling. It’s late, I’m tired, and again, it’s absolutely fine for us, as fans, to have these discussions, but I think it’s important to keep in mind that sometimes the things we talk about are outside the scope of what the original author intended for their story, y’know?

Yes! Someone actually gets Toga! It's not her, it's a side effect. More to it, she can't be satisfied with just any random character's blood, it has to be the blood of someone she "loves". It makes her similar to La Brava actually.... There was also the boy with the miasma quirk. While his quirk didn't seem psychologically stressful at first, it's discovered that his body is constantly producing the poison gas nonstop. He can't hold it in as that was causing him pain and poisoning him from the inside out, and, living in a city with many people, he obviously couldn't release it out in the open either. There were also the laws that dictate how civilians use their quirks on top of that, so the boy was stuck in a serious bind, on top of being accused of being a villain.

I wouldn't even say recent years. Tekking Capepunk is a subgenre. One of my favorite "superhero" stories is Worm. Which is a web novel about a girl that starts out wanting to be a hero, but through issues becomes a infamous supervillain instead. I'll admit that it veers into eldritch horror, but boy did I think it was good at getting across the feelings its going for.

Favorite characters gentle and la brava. Just great characters that fell off the side of good due to how they either mess up like gentle or get made fun of by their classmates. Hero society really isn't fit to handle stuff like this in hikimori lile Jp Quirk ice and fire with todoroki. Favorite character Mt lady when a showman gets humbled to be a true hero second midnight and it's so sad how fast she was forgotten about by story and fans with only one character remembering her existence. Guy wise probably endeavor as he was calling out hero society but nobody listened because "bad dad" and it ended up coming true. Next hawks who is so cool and has a lot of development as a person. True villain team wise. Villain twice as he was how subversion is done correctly where his power would have been broken and stopping him before and ending him is how more mangaka should do things. Least favorite toga she is terrible overall and her getting this far with just a knife and face masks is hilarious. Even with the quirk boost it's still a surprise.

7:30 Something I do appreciate is that Izuku's Dad (or any other member of his family) turned out to be AFO or one of the BBEGs, cause honestly this is one of my least favorite thrope in fiction. Star Wars did it, not everything needs to be Star Wars (plus, Lucas did so, mainly to limit the number of characters, same goes with Leia being Lukes sister).

Regarding Toga, I agree her parents are absolute garbage, but I feel youre missing some things. The problem wasnt just her quirk so much as it was her behavior. Yes, her quirk made her crave blood, but it didnt make her kill animals or attack people. Those were *choices* she made. Her personality, completely independent of her quirk, was... Pretty messed up. She was sadistic, and obsessed with death and killing, and lacked empathy, and was just dangerously obsessive and unstable in general. Even if her quirk explains some of those traits, it doesnt make them ok. Imagine if you had, like, a wolf quirk, and it made you crave raw meat, and gave you the urge to hunt, and to stalk prey, and to kill, and to eat living creatures. That doesnt make it ok for you to go around killing and eating people. And in the same way, Toga's quirk made her crave blood, but that didn't make it ok for her to go around killing animals or stabbing people in order to get it. THAT is probably what they were sending her to counselling for, not just for the fact that she craved blood. Again, her parents were horrible. But Toga was horrible too. Did she get a raw deal from society? Yes. Did she still make horrible, inexcusable choices? Yes. Does her quirk make her not responsible for her actions? Absolutely not. You said if it isnt handled right, Toga is gonna end up severely damaged, but if you actually look at the flashbacks and stuff, her personality was super messed up even before her quirk manifested and she started getting treated badly. Its not like she was mentally healthy and well adjusted and then her quirk manifested and she BECAME super messed up in response to how her parents treated her; she was messed up from the start. Im sure the way she was treated did make things worse, but it didn't *cause* her mental and personality issues.

My favorite Character is probably Deku, the basic answer I know but I like him. In terms of moments, probably Tomura waking up. MHA means a lot to me because growing up watching superhero shows and the Big 3. I wanted a Superhero anime, I found some but they're not what I had in mind, some came close but I gave up looking after 'Avengers, but they're collectible toys.' I was going through an 'I'm too old for new manga' phase in college, but then I read MHA out of curiosity after hearing it getting a season 2. And here we are, with MHA as one of my favorites, and the main reason I still read manga today.

With regards to “The Boys”, it is not nuanced. Original author of the graphic novel is very open about hating superheroes in general and that being his whole motivation for writing the story. The writers for the show, who changed many, many things, recently went full mask off “WE HATE YOU FOR THINKING DIFFERENT THAN US AND HOMELANDER HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOU! HOW WERE YOU SO STUPID TO NOT SEE IT! STOP FINDING HIM INTERESTING HE IS LITERALLY US INSULTING YOU!”

Gentle and Twice are imo the best characters in the entire story. I would have loved for twice to get a happy ending. He deserved the world and got deaded by hawks. I feel like had Twice and Toga met when Toga was discovering her quirk they would have turned out actually healthy people. Twice could have learned to handle his quirk, gotten over his fears and Toga would have had a friend who understands what it is like to be an outcast. They still would have become villains, but healthy ones, with a chance of survival. Gentle needed his short dabble in villainy. Otherwise he wouldn't have met La Brava. Also now he is absolutely sure that what he wants is to be a hero. I can kind of see him becoming a full fledged hero and becoming a friend to deku. Also on the Aoyama situation, with his decision he shows that he is not qualified to be a hero. The heroic mindset would have required him to stand up to AFO or at least tell any of the heroes or other students.

Think of the first war....izuku hit Tomura 's head multiple times with 100% ofa while he was quirkless (eraser head quirk) and that didn't kill him. He even managed to stop one attack with his mouth. Imagine with impact absorption quirk activated. He could tank a 200% ofa easy.

I do like Gentle. It’s just that to me, someone who jumps from wanting to be a hero (essentially a super cop), to flunking out, to being a criminal reads like someone who wanted to have a measure of power/authority over others. Obviously, Gentle was more of an attention seeker wanting his name to go down in history. Neither of these qualities are really desirable in a superhero, especially in a society that regulates their heroes

Worst part was bakugo being revived by a deus ex machina. What makes it worse is that unlike vegeta who got more development after being brought back, Bakugo on the other hand had no more development and did nothing, His revival was just pointless and really just was a damage control for horikoshi so he didn't get bombarded with threats from the bakugo fans. Also armored allmight is r*tarded and is another deus ex machina that creates plot holes. The only positive thing i can say about the final arc is that Shigaraki actually fkn died THANK GOD! I was worried he was gonna be redeamed and then he would call deku "My hero" S1-3 was a 8/10 Final arc makes it a overral 6.5/10

Man i cant stand that deku killed tomura its just such a weird message, and i get that like if it was real life Deku might’ve “had” to but it isn’t Horikoshi chose to write it this way and its just awful imo. Also i feel its a huge cop out, I agree in most cases letting the villain live doesn’t work because its not handled well, it isn’t easy to have it make sense and it feel satisfying but Horikoshi set up and he didn’t even try just gave him a couple of lines that barely mean anything and thats it there was no message actually. To me Deku killing Tomura is like if Batman killed the Joker, it is absolutely the sensible thing to do but they are heroes they’re supposed to be better than everyone, and if like Deku would’ve had an actual reaction to fucking killing someone maybe id have less of an issue with it but no, murder, sleep, back to normal, feels mad weird.

@@ragnaricstudios5888To be fair Dabi had a completely different flame colour and looked way different from the other todorokis not to mention Endeavour ran agency full of flame users which muddied the whole idea that just because someone has a flame quirk they're related to endeavour. Regardles, the dabi reveal is less about the surprise and more about the impact on the todoroki family and the world. As for saving the villains it was only really Deku who was about that which is consistent with his character. And the villains they didn't really go out of their way to kill people aside from heroes and people who opposed them aside, that doesn't make their actions ok but they aren't evil like AFO is who Deku does not care about sparing.

I sentence Aoyama to 20 years of Therapy. I think the reason Gentle failed in school was because he's on the spectrum. The clues are all there. Super heroics are his hyperfixation/special interest. He has his own way of thinking and doing things that isn't TYPICAL. And no one understood him, but La Brava and Deku. Two other characters that seem to be on the spectrum as well.
@Chalo122790
@Chalo122790 3 месяца назад
My problem with the ending is in generally a lot: Izuku is just a non character since the Dark deku arc. everyone telling him what to do, and to kill and his intention not to kill just keep getting ignored on all the plans. and he doesnt ever acknowledge anything about what he is actually feeling, when he goes quirkless we get NANA reaction to it, not dekus. again the whole going quirkless is the plan of the previous users and they just be like do it and shut up, and he just goes with it even when they dont agree with his ideas. Deku's foil was Tomura but pretty sure they only interchanged a couple lines here and there in the whole manga, as a foil it was terrible and sure Deku still saw good in tomura but there was no real link on the story for them. Nothing seems to have changed on the society, the idea or part of the story was the society was the problem and the villains were born from a faulty society, and nothing has changed, the whole society created toga , and it doesnt seems like any of it was addressed. And we can also end with AFO just being this aizen level dude, that caused all he did to get tomura as his vessel, but also part of the idea was that tomura was going to be its own thing and then AFO just also ruins tomura character by pretty much all his motivation was created by this big bad, and not by the society / family as was hinted at previously and pretty much killing anything interesting behind tomura. And finally all might character assassination and nonsense iron might, so this equipment let all might actually stand to AFO , why not fight and help everyone? Why not give it to someone else? Also this seems to be an straight upgrade to pretty much most of the Class 1a quirks (so what stops a quirkless deku using a copy to be a hero? this kills the whole premise) And also in the end the whole idea of all might was to learn to not need to fight, that a society having / standing on 1 person is not "healthy" and in theory he had already learned that just using his life to fight was not the way to go that he was good as a teacher and to give direction to the next generation. So yeah I really hate Iron might, other than it was cool and enjoyed it but from a story perspective I hate it.

One thing that NEVER made sense to my mathematical brain was the probability rate of quirkless people in the story. In the beginning it was started that roughly 20% of the world's population was quirkless but that it was steadily getting smaller. 20% is still 1 IN 5 PEOPLE!!!!!! So how is it that we only ever officially meet 3 in the ENTIRE series and why is bullying so rampant against, again, 1 IN F*#@#ING 5 PEOPLE OF THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF THE PLANET according to the statistics!!!😡🤬😤

You could say that other countries have a higher population of quirkless than others. Maybe there's quickless schools people can go to but those are no longer the norm so maybe they are like private schools so not everyone can pay for their child to go to them . Honestly didn't remember it was 20%. That seems insanely high looking back. If someone were to ask for how much of the population is quirkless off memory. I would have said 3-5%.

Isn't it stated that most of that percentage is made up of the elderly so it makes sense that'd we wouldn't encounter many quirkless characters as they wouldn't be relevant and as for quirkless bullying we only have Deku as an example and even then it makes sense since he was the only one in his class.

@@johnman8398 I don't ever recall it being stated that the majority of the quirkless are made up by older generations, but that doesn't change the fact that it still means that 1 in 5 people don't have a quirk meaning that, probability wise, every single person should have direct knowledge, and relation to someone who is quirkless, be it they themselves, one of their parents, or one of their grandparents. As for bullying, I 1000% put the blame on the teachers and adults around that witnessed and had evidence of the bullying, but still did nothing about it. Not just Deku but bullying against Toga and Spinner as well, and I fully believe that they should have been reprimanded, fired for not putting a stop to it.

Regarding Gentle, you really don't WANT to have special programs or whatever for someone who keeps failing. Pro heroes have peoples lives in their hands. You REALLY don't want someone who can't pass the test on his own to be in that position. Think of it this way; if you had to have extremely risky and difficult surgery, and you found out that your surgeon failed med school 4 times, kept failing over and over and over, and only got his license because the school put him in some special program because he really really WANTED to be a doctor... Are you gonna be comfortable with that guy operating on you? The simple fact of that matter is, not everyone is CAPABLE of being a hero. Some people are just gonna be unable to cut it. You don't WANT to let someone succeed if they can't pass the most rigorous standards. You really only want the very best of the best. Imagine if someone really REALLY really wanted to be an Olympic swimmer, and they took the exam like 5 times and failed it every time. Should they get put into a special program to get them to pass? Or should you say "look I'm sorry but you just aren't able to make the cut. Only the very best of the best are able to pass this. We can't let you in if you aren't qualified."

A point that I should have clarified a little more with Gentle is that I am not saying they simply make him a Pro-Hero and give him full reign with that job title. I am saying that as he could be placed in a lower position in the hero industry. That position could be a desk job (similar to what Ragdoll did after she lost her quirk), or perhaps help in evacuations when a villain attacks. Similar to a paid-internship type of thing. While he would be there he would get first hand knowledge of how heroes work and all the things that go into this. We can clearly see that Gentle develops very good control over his quirk during his fight with Deku, he even used it to secure an entire prison. So he DID master his quirk, it clearly just took him a bit longer than other people to get there. While he is working at the hero agency, perhaps he can take night classes or GED courses and eventually become a side-kick, assisting pro-heroes out in the streets. See, one aspect of Gentle we never learn about is what exactly he was failing in and why. Did he not have good control over his quirk? Was he not good at rescue/recovery? or was he just not passing written exams? More info is needed on the specifics of his case. As for the surgeon example you gave, no I wouldn't want him to be operating on anyone, but perhaps he could be a nurses aide? or similar position at a hospital in that industry if he really wanted to be in it. In the MHA world, the more you push someone like Gentle out of the hero industry the more likely he is too become a vigilante. Which is illegal, so in order to deal with that problem at the root there should be SOME position for him in that industry.

Fair point. The issue I see with this idea though, is that it opens up anyone who offers him a job to liability. Like imagine he becomes a sidekick or helps with evacuations or whatever, but then he makes a mistake and someone dies or gets hurt because of it. Whatever hero hired him would probably lose *their* hero license and their hero agency would be closed down, because they hired someone they *knew* was not qualified. To use the surgeon example again, if they did make him a nurse aide or something, and he made a mistake and killed someone... Whoever hired him is probably going to jail, or at least sued for malpractice. The bottom line is that if he can't perform the duties of the job, it would be irresponsible to let him on the job in *any* capacity. They have the licensing exams for very good reason. You only want the very best of the best, because if people who *aren't* the best of the best pass the exam, society suffers for it. And sure you COULD put him in a remedial program or something, and that would be good for Gentle... But would it be good for society? Is it in the best interest of the general public to give someone who can't cut it as a hero an extra helping hand? Just like in real life, not everyone is cut out for every job. A good real life example is fire fighters. Someone might WANT to be a firefighter more than anything. But if they freeze up, or forget their training, or panic, or can't meet the physical requirements, or forget what to do, or just generally mess up somehow every time they take the exam... It's probably in society's best interest that they just NOT become a fire fighter. We *could* put them in some remedial program and help them get better, but at the end of the day, is that a good idea? Or is it better to say "we would really rather have someone who didn't need a ton of extra help, so we can be confident they'll be able to do the job without any extra help. We can't take the chance that theyll take this remedial course and pass the exam, but then freeze up in the field again." I think you're looking at it solely from the perspective of what would've been best for Gentle, while failing to consider what was best for society in that situation.

MAybe its because of true crime podcasts I listen to, but I do not find Toga's all that sympathetic. Sure, she did have abusive parents and society failed her to a degree, but none of that changes the following: 1. The way she is showing "affection" is via drinking blood. Combine that with her having no standards as to objects of her affections (and no faithfullnes, obviously), means no matter what you'll do, she'll be compelled to stab and drink people's and animals' blood. 2. Since above is form of "affection", everytime she does that to person she fancy is comparable to sexual assault in her own standards. 3. She displays traits of psychopath and future serial killer from young age. Some as a kid (killing animals, drinking blood, paraphilias), some as high schooler (selective use of empathy, as in she doesn't feel it like most people do, she "ons" and "offs" it at whim, and the situation with her and Ochaco during Gigantomachia's rampage shows that) 4. She is not capable of self-relfaction in any capacity whatsoever. She wants to change the world to fits her, instead work on herself. 5. Since therapy works based on the patient's cognitive resources, the patient must be willing to take an effort to make therapy work. Trait number 4 pretty much means that even if her parents and society hadn't failed her, she still would end as serial killer, sooner or later. Bonus is that I am disgusted at how easy people feel sorry for this creature instead of some of her innocent victims.
