What I love about this "redemption arc" is that it doesn't absolve Endeavor of his sins. We see his family, the damage that he's done, and the uncomfortable fact that he has never really faced any consequences for it contrasted directly with his big New Symbol moment. It's a really good and nuanced message that, while you can't erase or be automatically forgiven for the awful stuff you've done in the past, that doesn't prevent you from becoming better and doing genuine good going forward. Also gotta love the little detail that Endeavor raises his right arm in victory, instead of his left like All Might used to. "I now understand that I need to become a symbol like you, but I need to do it in my own way" in one simple image.

@@aribsirkhot5647 just because people don’t like a child abuser doesn’t make someone a childish 14 year old, they’re decent human beings lmaoo. People are still allowed to not like him. People are allowed to not forgive him. The writer didn’t make his redemption arc to automatically make everyone love him like he can change his whole character in a day. He made Endeavor so people can hate him. He made the arc to show people you can hate or love someone and both opinions are valid. If you don’t get that then you don’t get the point of his redemption arc.

Sure people have the right not to forgive him or hate him. But they have no right to stop him from seeking redemption. Hell Endeavour doesn't even need to seek their forgiveness; that doesn't help anyone nor may it accepted. Anyone who says Endeavour cannot be redeemed clearly has the mindset of a 14 year old.

In case you are wondering how endeavor survived the fall at the end of the fight: the anime didnt show it but the two heros that ran to the collapsing building before used their quirk to catch him.

When it says, “overheating” is the reason why, he is referring to the fact that his weakness is that he overheats after using his quirk for a long time so that was the reason he married Rei and kept having children until he “created” Shoto whose ice prevents him from overheating and fire prevents him from freezing.

Shoto is, in his mind, the perfect hero in potential. All his power, with none of his weaknesses, and abilities that even he doesn't possess. And while he doesn't know it, he was competing, using just his own power, against a man with the strength of 7 other heroes combined into one being. And while the gap was still vast, there was just as big a gap between him and Number 3 as there was between him and Number 1. Hawks (the number 3 at the time) even basically said it in these two episodes, he's not even remotely in Endeavor's weight class, his high hero ranking is due almost entirely to the utility of his quirk and it's ability to save people, not fight villains, though he's good at that too. In a straight up fight, Endeavor would steamroll him like a tank running over a skittle.

What I like about Endeavor is that he is learning to get better, and the show just doesn't make him instantly improve on himself in a couple episodes. He still has a long way to go, and I like that.

It shouldn't be. When she releases her power it normally releases everything, so the ball would have dropped the next time she released her power. And before you say the ball could have reached orbit, she didn't throw it fast enough. She definitely used her power again before it escaped earth's gravity.

The imagery of Endeavor trying to surpass All Might is probably my favorite in the series. Just like Hawks said, Endeavor was the only one who was actually trying. Even though it was so futile he was essentially making a bridge with a broken plank of wood and some rocks. He was still *trying*, while everyone else was fine just standing back and cheering on All Might. And that's how he became the number one hero.

That guy with the short white hair was All for One giving the Stockpiling Quirk to his little brother. His brother had a useless Quirk that allowed him to pass on other Quirks. It merged with the Stockpiling power, making One for All. Deku is the ninth holder so far.

From the anime, this is my favorite episode. I started MHA hating Endeavor, but he's now my 2nd favorite character, my no.1 is Hawks. And this episode??? Hawks and Endeavor together are something else. Endeavor has one of the best redemption arcs imo, with Katsuki. Both of them change in such an amazing way.

The amazing thing about Endeavor is not only the will to atone (for the sake of the future of his children), but, if you look deeply into it, his story is incredibly tragic. For nearly three decades, his only ambition was to surpass All Might. Not for the fame, nor the glory, but because he genuinely desired to be the best. When he realised he could not do it, he decided to pass on his ambitions and legacy to his children, whilst finding a match that wouldn't pass his own, torturous flaws of his own Quirk. Somewhere along the way, and I am guessing after a specific event, he lost track of it all. He gave in to despair, obsession, near insanity, and accepted that harming Shoto and neglecting his own family was worth the cost of his dreams. And what happened? All Might retired. Again, Endeavor failed to surpass him, and not only that, but the covetous number one spot was given to him on a silver platter. 26 years of errors, of abuse, of that damaging fixation were all for naught. The mountain he was trying to climb crumbled, and he was left in its place, trying to defend a nation that was left with no symbol to look up to, no hero to trust. So, Endeavor had two choices: either take his own life (what would you do if 26 years of struggle were eventually proven futile, whilst realising the damage you had done?) or move forward. He humbled himself by asking All Might for advice, and All Might asked him a simple question: why does it mean to you, personally, to be the number one? And Endeavor looked at Shoto and realised that he had to secure a present and a future for his children. As a result, he slowly began to realise the depth of damage he had left in his wake. If you haven't read the manga, the road of Endeavor to redemption is only just beginning, and the mangaka won't spare him along the way. He will have to earn it, the hard way. Does that excuse his past actions? No way it does. But, from my experience, even abusers in fiction deserve a second chance; especially those who have actually felt the scope of their actions and are actively trying to atone. Also, one thing? Try the original Japanese episodes. Trust me on that.

Deku also has nine in his name, or a kanji homophonous to "nine" anyway. All the One For All Users have numbers in their name. Nana for example is straight up the Japanese word for seven.

What makes endeavor one of the best characters of the manga if not the best developped at least is not that this episode is his redemption arc... It's that it's only the BEGGINING of it ! because you don't rush a redemption arc for a character as cruel as Endeavor and the writer completely understood that and that's what allowed him to make what i would judge like one of the best redemption arcs ever done for me And to this day i'm still really shocked and sad that Midoriya vs Overhaul was nominated as "best fight of 2020" cause this fight and this episode was objectively so much better on every aspect and deserved it so much more lol

When I first got to this point of the story and analyzed Endeavor as a character, I can't help but realize how sad it was. What makes Endeavor a tragic character even before all of these, during the times when All Might was still active... Is the fact that Endeavor never even knew that he WAS indeed the strongest hero around. He was fighting a lost rivalry against All Might with One for All - a quirk that took hundreds of years and multiple generations to build and cultivate. Never gave up, and pushed his natural-born quirk to its utmost limit to the point that it drove him to insanity...

Completely agree! And in the manga there is so much more nuance to his expression, the way his eyes change thru the story is AMAZING. Endeavor is my 2nd favorite character, my no.1 is Hawks. Those two are incredible on their own and together.

What did you think of Hawk’s and the scope of his quirk? A lot of people miss it, but when the rubble was falling he was catching it with his feathers so it wouldn’t land on people below him.

I mean...I don't think anybody really missed that, considering that Hawks outright told Endeavor that he must not be a good cook since he's chopping up the rubble too coarsely for him to catch with his feathers...

@@100nitrog2 no actually most people really do miss that he’s catching the rubble. Many either don’t comment on it, or are confused what he’s talking about, or think he’s just talking about the sheer amount of rubble in general. I’ve watched a lot of reactions. Few people seem to notice it.

Endeavor's entire reason for his horrible treatment of his family was because his only goal and dream was to surpass All Might, but he couldn't. So he became bitter and obsessed with moulding his son into something to carry out his desire, abusing his family. All Might was a god in this world, and now he's gone. But the villains aren't stopping. So even though he knows he's not as strong as All Might was, Endeavor steps up anyway. Endeavor's son isn't ready yet to step up to the plate and fill the hole left by All Might, so he does instead despite knowing he can't measure up. Endeavor isn't a god like All Might, he's just a flawed man trying to change himself. And i think that's why this episode hits people as hard as it does

From 14:16 of the full episode Endeavor’s body was paralyzed through shear exhaustion. This is where Endeavor TRULY makes a statement in his seat as #1 hero. Without the use of his body endeavor has to solely rely on his quirk to propel him, later he is assisted by Hawks to reposition him and speed him up with feathers. When given the proper push endeavors body was still exhausted, hence why the punch wasn’t strong enough to blow his head off. Endeavor, still paralyzed, asks Hawks for one final favor and it is to use what’s left of his feathers to shoot him as high as possible into the sky. It is now deep minutes into the episode and Endeavor is STILL paralyzed…with the capability to go beyond plus ultra, endeavor, again uses NOTHING but his raw quirk to burn the nomu into ash….it is now 19:43 of the episode, and because the people meant so much to Endeavor he finally had enough strength to stand and lift his fist half way up so that no one would be afraid anymore…..That is our #1 hero!

I saw this on Anime Wins but Allmight almost never fights with other heroes. As in he gets there and he wins without help from other heroes when facing an opponent. But at the billboard charts they said that it's time to band together and immediately the next fight is one where the new no. 1 fights but with hawks backing him up. It's a nice detail that starts off the change

I read somewhere that said that Endeavor's arc isn't a redemption arc, instead it's a repentance arc, and I really love that! He is truly feeling the regret from his wrongs, but he knows that he cannot magically redeem himself in his family's eyes-- he probably never really could given how he treated them, but he can repent for his actions to show them how truly sorry he is. Also, I am so excited for season 5! March is tomorrow, and then we just wait out the month until the 27th!

I love that his redemption arc shows how much he really WAS a monster. It doesn’t shy away from the horror he put his family through. He understands he will never be able to really atone for his actions. But he’s willing to fight for it like he did for the number 1 spot. The biggest issue with most redemption arcs is they try to erase or lighten how awful the person was. They victim blame, or try to ignore it. But endeavors true monstrosity wasn’t even explored until a decent chunk into his arc. Sometimes it takes a long time for this shit to fully sink in. And it’s ok if his family does or doesn’t forgive him. But his arc shows how important both action (his whole “to atone” thing) and actually apologizing is for true healing to take place. Emotional wounds take the same kind of time and effort to heal, and some wounds never will heal right. Like this is how you “redeem” a monster like endeavor , and how you humanize them without brushing past their victims pain

I believe, the reason why Endeavor hated that school motto is because All Might embodied that motto. He is annoyed that the very person that he wanted to surpass just push his limits and *"Go Beyond Plus Ultra!"* , both making it harder to catch up to All Might and further increases the distance between them.

The most amazing thing about Endeavor this episode is that regardless how cruel of a man he is, his family is STILL a family. And that's astounding. Only a victim can forgive an aggressor, and this episode showed me it is genuinely possible. It won't happen for a lot longer but it's clear everyone is trying now. A long painful road that can only be crossed together. Rei Todoroki is trying to understand his position and trying to have her kids see that too. Which is just amazing. I truly can't wait for the brilliance of season 5.
