This is my new home made slaptop cajon. I just had to make this cajon after watching movies about the slaptop, which is a brilliant idea, if you ask me. I always ended up with muscle pain somewhere after playing on a normal cajon for a while. I took me about 2 full days to make this slaptop cajon, using left over plywood from an old cupboard, a PVC elbow pipe as a bass tube, a strap from an old bag, and some extra percussion. The woodblock sound is made by slapping two pieces of hard wood together, that are mounted to the side of the cajon. The snare is made from springs used in organs (no animals were harmed during the production of this... just kidding... I mean the instruments). The top sheet of plywood is glued and separated at 1/3 from the right, so you get 2 chambers, one for the snare and one for the low notes, without the snare sound. The cabasa can be placed either on the left or right depending on the type of rhythm. I like it on the right, next to the wood blocks and the tambourine. I expanded on the original design of the slaptop, by making it bigger and wedge shaped, so it fits nicely between the legs, providing a very comfortable playing position. It has a nice, rich, deep sound, which wasn't picked up well by my camera's microphone, but hey, you get the idea.
