How would you improve Golden Demon for 2023? I would find a way to make it an inclusive online experience. Maybe people take their models to their local store for professional photos to be taken, that are standardised across the world. Then people who have entered get priority on buying tickets.
I agree with some smaller events, but maybe have them as waves? Like the "good old days*", 'evey metal judges travel (maybe not all of them, just some of them) to smaller localised events. Split them into the regions, GD northwest, GD southwest... etc etc. Then do the big ones, GD Cardiff, GD London, GD Belfast... etc etc. With the final being at the GW HW for the champs of their respective categories, and then the champ of champs. * good ole days being when it was in the NEC in Birm, oh what a childhood.
I think the idea for fixing Golden Demon is a good, but would slightly refine it to be multiple qualifying events. Break it down to have a specific number of applicants from each event move on to the final, with minor awards granted to those who qualify and the actual Golden Demons being handed out at the final. That way you keep the prestige of the award while allowing people their opportunity to submit entries
It would be nice to have it like almost a tournament circuit. Like local GD qualifiers, to regional qualifiers (at the state level in US, regionally in UK so you'd have maybe 100 entries per category), then the big one at the end of the year. It'd be a nice way to celebrate the mid-upper tier painters who while they can't compete at the true GD level, deserve to be awarded for their effort. And to demonstrate to mid-lower tier painters the continuum from their painting skill to a GD winner level.
@@lv100Alice sucks, but if you can't make it it means you are not yet good enough of a painter. I don't think GD should have low barriers to entry, it's the pinnacle of the hobby. Local painting competitions are more adapted to people like you and I who don't have the painting skills for that level

New 40k fan here, this event looks awesome and one day I'd love to say I went to one, even if I never pick up a mini and paint it, or play the tabletop game, I've really started falling in love with not just the lore and aesthetics of the models, but the community itself seems to be really cool too. Glad to be here to enjoy the fun with you all.
I love the idea of regional golden demons awards and if that came with a pass to an annual event to compete, that would be amazing!!! I'm not even a strict Warhammer painter and I love the tips and the Warhammer fandom you all support. Been really anticipating the warlord Titan series, and when it is done you NEED TO enter a real competition. Thank you for all you share!!!
Adopt the ‘Chicago System’ of judging as created by the MMSI (Military Modeler’s Society of Chicago) where all gold worthy entries get a gold medal. All silver worthy entries get a silver. And all bronze worthy entries get a bronze. You still need a darn good entry to get even a bronze. They do still have a best in show, but all the amazingly spectacular entries get the recognition they deserve. The legendary, and now sadly passed, Shep Paine was a part of that group.
I plan to make a trip to GD in '23 if I can snag a tickets, already writing a bot to get me one. Even if I don't win a placement it will still be fun to say I entered
You say the UK hasn’t had a Golden Demon for 3 years. Australia hasn’t had one on the right side of the world for us since 2012. If we’re doing qualifiers it should be World Wide with tickets and entry for the big one at Warhammer World up for grabs.
Why not a "Golden Demon Invitational" That specifically outreaches to major players in the painting and social media space? An All-Stars lineup with prepunched tickets?

Oh...so you are not allowed to film in there? Wops.... I think bringing back the international Demons could help a bit. The UK Demons are the most prestigeous of course so people will want to go to that, but you would have a lot of international entrants that would enter on the mainland since that's closer to them. Basically restraining it to UK through regionals only sounds a bit unfair - this hobby is practiced and loved worldwide! One more thing we must not forget: GW does not care that much about making it fair and a well thought out and organised competition. It's a marketing event run by a company. Now I believe ALOT of the people involved care - judges, community team, all of them love the hobby and care for the painters, but let's face it: The company does not; the higher ups that call the shots and look at the numbers do not. Additional events? Costs money! We all wish the GD would be something more than it is and dream about how GW could perfect it, but I will not hold my breath as it is mainly that - a marketing event that was good enough for them the way it was for a long time now. Also did you just call me a crybaby? 🤣
To be fair I've been lurking in the model scene and never heard about the Golden Demon competition, until RU-vid decided to show me this video. 40k kinda dropped off the map for me when local stores stopped stocking copies of the magazine I'd been buying to start a collection. I'm more into the bandai/kotobukiya models and I can agree that their international competitions in gunpla and elsewhere are absolutely legendary. Would like to see something like that in the minis scene. Seeing how talented people are motivates me to get better at the hobby, and they really need to capitalise on the social aspect instead of gouging people just trying to get into the hobby.
@@alecmiller5296 They've clearly made a few considering they are the front-runner (by a landslide) in Wargaming. As a business they've definitely made some sketchy moves but in all fairness; the kind of have no choice. CEO's of companies are compelled by the LAW (as per their position within the company) to make decisions purely based on what makes them money. They can be held accountable and even prosecuted for doing anything outside of that. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see more customer friendly decisions and I don't condone some of the shit they've done but at the end of the day, if they don't make money, they won't be in business.
One answer is to have several regional golden demon events, where the winner from each region goes onto the main Golden Demon event. More events, more ticket sales, more money for Games Workshop :P
@@sticy5399 i think so too. It's a celebration of miniature painting art. It's also a tradition. And it does give content for white dwarf, website community, etc.
I feel like while you weren't able to get a ticket to golden demon, having your White Dwarf as a display piece in warhammer world seems like a great trade off.

I recently kinda got back into the hobby after a long hiatus (life happens). The scene of all the Golden Demon winners with your soundtrack was just so stunningly beautiful. It warms my heart to see so many fellow Warhammer fans jumping out so hard after winning and the slowed footage and the sci-fi music just made me starstruck. I’ve really enjoyed all your content here, not excluding your personality, and though you couldn’t enter GD this year, I wish you Godspeed next year in getting a ticket. Something hits so hard hearing the MWM theme play over the montage of all the winners. A mixture of the nostalgia of the MWM theme from watching since Sandstone Necrons getting me back into the hobby since I was a tiny thing 18 years ago, played over a collection of some of the most talented individuals in the hobby give a very "Well you started here, and this is what you can end up achieving" feel. Thank you Guy for always providing the best inspiration.

It is absolutely impossible to not smile wholeheartedly whilst watching people receive their awards. Legends every single one of em. God I love this hobby.
I'd like to see a "Golden Demon" for less professional painters that also encourages and includes repainting old models and proxies. The Golden "Demon" would be awarded to the best of the best of any category per each individual game. Aeronautica Imperialis, Adeptus Titanicus, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and 40K itself . The statues awarded would be themed per game, such as Golden Warlord Titan for Adeptus Titanicus and all of them could be used to play the game with, say for example, a Golden Thunderhawk for use in Aeronautica Imperialis as part of the Adeptus Astartes air fleets. Silver and Bronze ones would also be made. And of course, consolation prizes should also be awarded to the unlucky ones, such as a free kit or something.
I live in Edinburgh. As a young lad I started collecting lotr models when the first film came out. I'll never forget going up to the counter and the guy saying "so what do you think of the films? Baz here has seen it 5 times already" burned into my memory haha
Loved the conversion honestly. It's so funny that everyone else was doing full dioramas and you didn't notice! haha, I guess it's mostly old hat to the guys entering it.
The entries are sent to GW weeks in advance, and then there is plenty of time to judge them. GW will then be able to have a big show like the good old days ;)
I'm going to be honest, I think this is my favourite of your videos( I've watched it about 5 times already).Keep it up! I agree with you with the improvements but ,as you you said, it is biased towards the UK but Warhammer was made in the UK so I think that's fair.

Don't get me wrong I'm so happy for everyone who won and seeing their smiles was nice and Guy, you make the days easier with your content, so that's nice too.

Honestly thrilled for you for GW displaying your Sub Dwarf and congratulations to your friend on his silver. My closest claim to fame is an uncredited photo of a few of my Manowar models printed in an old issue of White Dwarf
Also....to improve the competition/event. Change the ticket sales to "competition entry" OR "Event only". Giving people who just want to attend the event the chance to do just that, and people who want to enter can actually enter. Create more activities, games, fun things to do as an attendee such as speed painting challenges, quiz, tutorials etc. If you can buy tickets for either then perfect.
Having been to Warhammer World in Nottingham I agree with your suggestion for more events, they do go to great lengths at Warhammer World to make sure the space they have is not in constant use for events but rather open for people to come and play games and try out paints or simply browse the shop and display cabinets to see what they like. Wahammer World is a mecca for the hobby but I don't think it should always be the place for Golden Demon to take place, more competitions, more opportunity for more people to join in, more better. My counter suggestion would be Golden Demon stays "prestigious" and a new competition is introduced in which more members can compete, perhaps finalists of said competition move onto Golden Demon? Not sure if a tourney system would be the right fit. Great video guy! This will be great for viewers who are unable to visit the mothership :)
I agree there should be more events but not in the UK. It’s been so long since GD Spain, GD Germany and such. No need to expand GD in the UK, just bring it back to Europe
How about, more events, but the first 3(+) are knockout out events for the final one at Warhammer World. People submit models to them and get judged by the same team and the top models get taken forward to the Golden Demon event at Warhammer World. The winners of the local events get a local event award (something different to a Golden Demon) and a ticket to the Warhammer World Golden Demon event where the finalists are chosen from the whole years entrants. Spreads out the judging, increases the capacity, but doesn't diminish the prestige of the main event. It would build up the hype too and if you missed an event you'd have a later event to try and get to.
Wondered across the video via RU-vid home feed and wow, super wholesome video, bloody brilliant. Just getting back into the hobby as a father with my 2 sons who are interested one chaos, one tyranid. Slow going of course but family craft time is now asked for rather than forced off screen time :D Seeing all the older 90-00's minis in the video brought back so many memories. Look forward to exploring more of your content.
I've become a fan of Arbitor Ian in recent months. Seeing him in there, whith his cool yellow lumberjack shirt, a pint of Guiness, and pouring straight from the pot on his diorama just made me even more of a fan Great video as always Guy !
11:55 I always tell everyone who wants to start a youtube channel that success doesn't come from being the most talented, or even the most passionate in your intended subject matter. The best stuff comes from Film and A/V nerds, or general renaissance men who count their intended subject matter among their interests. You put together entertaining videos that can draw in folks that may not even have that much interest in painting themselves.
Watching the montage at the end, I thought; "damn, that dude has a killer hair/beard setup going on, and his style is great!" then I saw him get another award, then the slayer sword, and just said to myself, "makes sense"
The thing that surprised me the most is how good the food at bugman's looks. Like you'd think that event food just sucked by nah that looks absolutely crackin'!
Loved seeing the winners celebrations, we often see the artists incredible work. But not always the human passion that goes behind these entrees, hard not to well up slightly seeing such elation.
I did not get a ticket (despite being on the site the moment it went live) but I do live in Nottingham and so nipped in to pick up the fancy miniature, and the guys behind the till said 750 tickets...
This video is one of the best bits of Golden Demon content, my suggestions would be more of this! Winners interviews, pro photography of the minis etc.

It didn't occur to me how much of a hurdle GW's paint-naming conventions could be to a red-green colour-blind painter. Your mini came -out very cool. Holding Local Heats for Gold Demon, and having them feed in to the Slayer Event, could be a way to expand the competition without overwhelming the 'Eavy Metal Team. Congratulations to Steve for his results. It was nice seeing quite an age range in the finalists. 9:07 The Necron grasping the Black Templar standard is a lovely touch on that entry. 9:17 The background on that other Black Templar really howls Rogue Trader artwork. 9:21 Ooh those bases are super well blended in to the plinth. 10:53 That's moody as heck.
It was the best GD I’ve ever seen and to be able to see it all in person and meet so many great people was amazing. It was truly fantastic to meet you buddy and I’m proud to finally have another bucket list thing done - being in your video 😊😊😊

I'm surprised no one made any sprue glue still with the time allotted, I never knew about the Sprue Hobby Challenge! That looks like so much fun!, It's cool to see GW promoting people to think and operate outside of the box rather than stay in the box "literally". I'm pleasantly surprised at them fulfilling the annual subscription (You should have asked for your fiver back! 😂) Very smart and sneaky though to ask them in person and put them on the spot with the evidence, I respect and appreciate the hustle 😂 I agree with the suggestion on what to do about the amount of people wanting to enter after 3 years of nothing, also more categories (especially catered towards newer people to the hobby) because the gap in skill, experience, technique etc in newbies, novices and experienced & highly skilled creators is huge, so giving these newer people a place where they'd not only be going up against people on equal footing, but have an excellent opportunity to network and gain insight/advice from those more skilled and experienced, GW should definitely be doing more to encourage, acknowledge and support those newer (but still incredibly dedicated fans) and nurturing their fresh excitement and appreciation for the hobby, the community. I'd have loved to have been there, the entries this year were absolutely insane!, so much beautiful work! I'll have to make the pilgrimage someday soon with a friend for sure. I think having multiple events on a permanent basis would be a good idea. And if we're worried about "Golden Demon" being tarnished by overuse, we don't need to use the Golden Demon for this. There already exists Bronze and Silver trophies. So, why don't GW just make a Bronze Demon and Silver Demon character? Say they're the Golden Demon's brothers or something. Make those the mascots for the "lesser" competitions. It allows GW to run more events throughout the year, while maintaining the prestige of the OG.
Yeah, local regional and national would be fun. They could copy the Delancey chess challenge model. Every county has a Mega Demon contest. Then say top 20 from each county can go on to a regional Giga Demon, then top 20 of each Giga Demon go onto a national Terra Demon, finally the top 20 of England, wales Scotland and Ireland go on to a Golden Demon Final or something??! 🤷🏻♂️
I completly disagree in one point! That it would be fair to make just more Events ONLY in UK. What is with the great Artists outside your Island? Not everyone can afford a flight to the UK.
I think "maybe" one particular Twitch streamer was so salty about not getting a ticket to Golden Demons she stopped talk on her "Warhammer" stream about Golden Demons when I text Chatted about it just generally i.e. "People in chat talking about other people's work" she said when I was text chatting about it. So I stopped discussing it in chat and then she said "I didn't enter because women don't win Golden Demons" etc and I decided in chat to state that this year the U.S. Golden Demon had a great Silver Demon won by a woman who I think deserved gold; then two of her Twitch mods jumped in and timed me out in chat and replied with "Let it go" and "Don't talk about Golden Demons.". I was like 'what ?' don't talk about golden demons in a Warhammer stream ? ok I thought fair enough it's her stream so I unfollowed faster than you can say 'mardy cow' that causes drama all the time. I only thought I would mention this because it just goes to show how fast some people can try to ruin the enjoyment for others in this hobby and no I won't name but I'm sure some of you will know already who it is.
I was there the week before with my 10 year old son, whose mind was suitably blown by the museum :) In fact we entered the hall where people were just playing games with their own armies and my son was just saying "look at that!" on repeat for the rest of the day (thanks to everyone who was playing that day for their patience with an extremely excited kid) Gutted we were a touch too early to see your White Dwarf mini in the shop cabinets though Guy!
I gotta say, I love that not many people are allowed to film in the museum but I did a full tour of it back in February, uploaded it to my channel, and I’ve never heard anything come from it 😂 no one said I couldn’t and I didn’t see any signs saying I couldn’t 🤷♂️😂😂
Sooo, I have a silver demon statue from 2004, which I won in the US @ Games Day Los Angeles (and I juuust missed collecting a bronze as well). Back in those days they were running FOUR Games Days per year: Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles and (I think) Atlanta. They did this volume of annual Games Days for only 2-3 years iirc, and in that time, the quality of Golden Demon entries in the US definitely went down. There was an over-saturation of opportunities. If I had flown to the UK in 2004 with the same entries, I think I’d have been lucky to get an honorable mention pin. You make a good point about judges having limited time to consider all the entries (although they had three full days at Adepticon) and in the recent past they’ve run Golden Demon events with more restricted categories, like only vehicle units or monsters, or just 40K or just Fantasy (I may not have the specifics correct, but it was a more limited number of categories). I prefer they run the event with all categories, but running four per year will eventually result in what happened back in 2004: the quality of entries per event overall will start to suffer. I’d just chalk this year up as an extreme high-water mark in amazing quality… Maybe 2 per year would be sustainable, but I’d be cautious about overdoing it.
For the UK, create regional events, Essex, Yorkshire, the welsh bits and the Scottish parts and all the other areas held at the local GW stores (Bronze Demon) The winner moves on to...Capital events London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast (Silver) and national Event all silver winners to attend at Warhammer world for the golden Demon Awards. (Your 500).... just my thoughts
Really REALLY, Enjoyed this video. I've yet to make it across the drink to get to WHWorld in UK. Its heartbreaking. But I still have some time before my tombstone reads "I'm Not Here" I came to your channel trying to find the details on how you did your necron paint scheme. I'm working on my first army and I'm afraid to start slinging paint until I'm TOTALLY happy with the scheme. Everything is put together, based, and primed. With your necrons I think I've found it, but still haven't managed to find the video. Though this was delightful to sit through in the meantime lol. Thx
