The movie: Not worth $30 on a streaming service I already pay for This commentary: Wouldn’t complain to pay $30 for 😂😂 I feel like this movie is like a sad rollercoaster😂; it builds up and gets exciting and then just falls hard and sad then repeats, and I hate to say that because it’s Disney. Loved the vid Ange!!!

I‘ve always loved the 2009 Chinese live action movie, Mulan: Legendary Warrior. It’s brutal and so good! Definitely not for kids! It has no magic or fantastical elements, as director Jingle Ma wanted to make a war film that was more grounded in reality.

With this movie, I was probably a bit bias since I had seen lots of negativity about it. But even watching the movie and seeing this reaction I just cannot bring myself to like the movie. The plot is definitely questionable. Every attempt at making an emotional scene just felt really cheap because nobody really did anything to earn it. Sure the cinematography and music is good, but that's not going to make me feel any less cheated from a movie. No hate to you who did this reaction, I've been binge watching through your movie commentary's and I love them. It's interesting to see a different perspective.

Take out Mushu, but add pheonix and a witch...take out the songs, but leave references in the score...this movie was basically a complete fail. Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (2009) is a MUCH better live action adaptation.

Honestly, I think the fact that this version of movie combines original ideas/elements with tidbits/nods to the animated Mulan is partly WHY I enjoyed it so much. Funnily enough, it seemed like some of the things you complained about were some of the things I liked best about it: the pointed similarities, the quotes, the repeated themes... I appreciated the contrast of this skillful Mulan with the way the animated Mulan was presented, and it made sense to me that there was no training arc showing her learning her fighting skills with the army because we saw that she developed and honed her abilities as a child; therefore, her character arc was based on her struggling to hide her true identity despite the fact that not being true to herself was weakening her chi until she embraced who she really was and put an end to the charade. As far as I'm concerned, it's unfair that people keep criticizing the similarities and differences between these two movies. If you were to look at them as separate unrelated movies that just happen to both tell the story of the legendary warrior Mulan as told from different sources (since the opening of this movie basically says as much), I don't think this movie would get half as much flack as it does. That being said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This was just my two cents.

I mean, i disagree with you on a fundamental level on everything you said about the movie, but still, i agree everyone is entitled to their own opinion and respect yours too

And I feel like that's why this movie felt off to me. It's like it's trying to be something new and yet still can't move past from things that made it what it was. After watching it again, I do enjoy how the movie plays out. The problem is, it's a retelling of a character from another perspective that adds too much and shows too little sometimes. There are tons of movies that deviates so much from its original source and not only it can bring something new, it manages to do little nods to its original material. I love Edge of Tomorrow, and after reading All You Need Is Kill, both stories definitely has its own ups and downs. Same could be said with Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Finding the right balance is hard sometimes. Trying too far ahead from the original source and you'll get The Golden Compass situation, while trying to stay too true to the original source and you'll get The Last Of Us. Now, whether both is good or not depends on whether you know the original source or you see the movie first.

You seemed to notice many times that Mulan is perfect, flawless, invincible, even from early childhood. No training, no explanation. Just born to be perfect. You also seemed to be both surprised and disappointed by this. Me too. A hero needs a journey. Male or female, a hero's journey includes learning, working hard to develop the skills to defeat the bad guys. Being born perfect is boring, boring, boring. For some reason, Hollywood has decided that male heroes must start out weak and untrained then learn all their skills and powers, but female heroes are perfect in every way, automatically, right from the start. You mentioned this at 13:20 in the video. The animated Mulan had to learn. That was a great movie. I love it, my daughters love it. This one? Awful. Boring. Both daughters said they will pretend this movie doesn't exist; only the animated version matters. As long as Hollywood insists on boring female heroes, movies that should be great will be boring. it's really too bad.
