Another great vid! I have definitely had some thoughts I wanted to share on the series. 1. Gulus was a fantastic villain who has the same values throughout the series: survival of the fittest. They are cocky and powerful for sure. They don’t believe they can loose a fight and want to use Hiro as a pawn to get stronger. One Hiro outsmarts him with a trick and Gammamon beats him in a fight, he concedes. He stuck with the survival of the fittest mentality and bowed down to Gammamon. Sure he didn’t like it but he was still willing to cure GRB after Gamma asked because Gammamon is now the alpha. Also interesting that Gulus just wanted an army to kill a threat only they have experienced. Noble intentions with an evil execution. 2. Quantumon is very on brand for the series themes. She may be the new most intelligent Digimon but admits to not having the absolute random ass brain of a human. We are def the most messed up meat computers that exist. And after all, Digimon are ones and zeroes. Being binary creatures limits them BUT they can grow and learn! She sends mons to earth because of a misunderstanding about a far far far away threat. Then all those mons just repeat her mistakes and are scared and alone in a world they can’t understand. They do the one thing they know: collect data. 3. Very unfortunate that Bandai didn’t communicate better about the BE and new mons. Sad to see a show get blamed for the mistakes of a giant company that can and should be better. 4. Very weird that there are many a one-off villain that never comes back. Dracmon is the only repeat I can think of. Just kind of odd. Don’t have a lot of thoughts on that. 5. Love the rolls each kid takes in the end. Ruli using her creativity and influence. Kyo using his brains, connections, and ambition to each out to mons of other countries. And finally Hiro being a brother to all mons. He is kind and understanding that’s that is just nice to see. I love the show. Sure it has bits to not like. That’s ok. We grow from that. Can’t wait to see what Seekers brings us. Thanks again for the great vid!!!

Thanks for this comment! I totally agree with you 100%! Something I realized while editing is this series STILL keeps the core values of Digimon which is that we and our digimon grow and evolve but we are both needed for that and while some digimon chose to try that the wrong way (Mephistomon scaring kids and turning them into stone, Meicrackmon trying to force Riku into doing everything her way) Hiro and the core gang were able to work out their differenced and show them their world and how it works and I thought that was so beautiful and really made the ending work for me.

Ghost Game was the first show I've watched coming back to Digimon (besides Tri), so I came into it with zero expectations and really enjoyed it. I liked how this is Digimon's take on the horror mystery genre as opposed to other Digimon seasons. Loved how they were creative with the Digimon and used their lore to make horror episodes out of. It shows that the writers really cared about the Digimon lore. While the main plot is weak or nonexistant, the individual horror stories are what shines the most in this series. Didn't regret watching GG all the waythough, knowing to keep my expectations low when others don't.

Ghost Game's biggest weakness is the lack of character building for Hiro and Ruli. Appmon was great at balancing plot and character development while still being mostly episodic, but sadly not a ton of people watched it.

As much as I love Gulus, sometimes I wish the show didn't tease so much mysteries earlier on since I think the show was at it's best when it was being what it was always meant to be, an episodic MotW show. And trust me when I say we need more digimon MotW shows, all we got of that currently besides GG is the first 12 episodes of a season, the last 25 episodes of a season, and a spin off

Nice video and some good points put there. It is the same with every new season in the last years: "it is pretty, disappointing, etc"" however out of expectations and what everyone wants the las two series have had good things and strong points. Whether it is in animation or plot the last to seasons had something to offer and are, like you say, way apart from being genuinely bad.

Digimon Ghost Game is over? I remember watching new episodes of this show every Wednesday night back in 2022. I lost access to Crunchyroll so I fell behind & now that things have changed so much I don't know if I'll even have the time to catch up. It's kind of sad between this & the eShops shutting down that if feels like an era has ended. I'm going to miss my leasure time that I had in the past but I'm glad the show at least had a conclusion & wasn't unceremoniously canceled mid-season. Maybe I can come back & watch the full review of this finale one day once I'm all caught up. In the meantime thanks for the update on the ending of one of my favorite digimon animes of all time.

I enjoyed parts of Ghost Game, rated it a 5/10 due to its flaws. Before I mention them, I’ll say what I like about it and other parts. Understandable why Regulusmon’s higher forms didn’t debut so I can’t blame Toei. What I liked about GG were the character dynamics. It’s not the first series to do this but the human and Digimon partners are distinct from each other. As they’re not carbon copies. And the individual episodes are great too with emotional stakes. As Digimon being akin to ghosts in ghost stories are done well here. Now for my issues. It was stated for the series to be episodic from the start but it often put out details it wants you to be keen of but either never addresses or addresses them way later on. Yuto, Digitamamon who was Angoramon’s best friend (even with him asking him if he’s a human or a Digimon), Phelesmon, etc. I wouldn’t have an issue if it was completely serialized, episodic or a nice balance of the two. You have towns being drowned by Digimon, humans being transformed or stored somewhere by Digimon and they don’t talk about it ever again, as if everyone in the city has amnesia. Sometimes the characters don’t have much character development aside from Kiyoshiro and Jellymon. You’d expect Hiro to be happy with his dad coming back but he just blankly says he wants answers. They lack agency to check what is going on with Digimon entering the world as a year has passed and they barely do that. The series has its pros and cons but it is unique.

Jellymon has 0 character development. Shes still remains the same remissful imprudent dolt shes always been since first introduction. Like her actions gets the children in alot of trouble and even hurting them to a degree. Like think back to Canoweismons first introduction. When Angoramon was down Betelgammamon asks Tesla to help him and what does she do? She football spikes his body towards the children expecting them to catch him but instead smushes them and knocks them down cuz Angoramon is too heavy. That attitude still reflects in the last episodes, ep 65 she outright abandons Kiyoshiro leaving him behind telling him to stop slacking while she flys over his collapsed body risking his overall safety. Afterwards Kiyo is left poisoned and out of breath when he catches up with everyone who's hoisted themselves up a tree. Then the final episode happens and what does she do? SHE PARDONS QUANTUMONS ACTIONS WHICH STARTED ALL THIS MESS THAT HIRO BROUGHT TO ATTENTION. Because the ends (meeting eachother) justified the means which was risking & sacrificing humanitys life to Digimon who are your guinea pigs to recommence your experiment!!! Jellymon doesnt deserve Kiyoshiro, shes a hinderance to his overall growth and development. It's so annoying how hes still a beta male cuck always remaining scared at everything in every situation. Like everytime he gives Attack orders you can see the fear in his eyes.

Man, I'm glad to see someone having a positive spin on this. It's honestly refreshing. I'll be real, Ghost Game has been my least favorite season for a variety of reasons. Not saying it was bad; it just wasn't for me. But the finale really threw me for a loop. I don't really consciously know what expectations I had going in, but I can say that absolutely none of them were met lol. Like you said though, I'm sure people will come back later and appreciate Ghost Game. That was my experience with Xros Wars, actually. When it first came out, I was a stick in the mud and all, "The Digimon don't digivolve? They just combine into different megazord forms? Lame! Not my Digimon!" But YEARS later I went back and gave it a chance, and it STRAIGHT UP turned into probably my favorite Digimon series (from an entertainment perspective, not necessarily a lore perspective). I'm sure that there are avid Ghost Game fans out there who just haven't discovered the show yet. Again, this season wasn't my cup of tea, but I'll be danged if I don't acknowledge what it did for the Digimon brand/lore. A little head-canon/theory of mine is that Quantumon and Culumon are related somehow. Both of them have power over digivolution to some degree. At the risk of going too far into left field by tying Ghost Game to Frontier, it's almost like Culumon is a "beast" form and Quantumon is a "human" form of the same Digimon.
@Xanaxdu

I think this is the best way to look at things. Digimon is going to continue to try new things and it will alienate older fans with different expectations but if you come at everything with a fresh mindset and with the idea of entertainment you will have more fun in the long run. I felt the same way about xros wars when it was first announced too but I still haven't given the show a watch and seeing all the love for it now just shows that I was being like the fans that never gave frontier a try.

About Proximamon and Arcturusmon, I would take that information with a grain of salt. Because there's things that don't add up at all. For starters, there had to be SOME communication between Bandai and Toei, seeing how the rosters are tied to the anime for the most part, and that includes Digimon that hadn't appeared in the series back when the rosters were announced, but they ended up being appearing later on in the show, such as Kuzuhamon, Cthyllamon, Bastemon, etc. Meaning there had to be some communication, as Bandai knew in advance what Digimon would appear. Even Brand New Digimon such as Cthyllamon. There's also the fact that there were other new Digimon in Gammamon's BE memory, which didn't appear, those being Fumamon, Bombermon, Ghilliedhumon, and Zanmetsumon. What sets those apart from Arcturusmon and Proximamon (besides the levels) however is that they got reference book entries in the week leading up to the release of the digivice VV. Meanwhile Arcturusmon and Proximamon weren't added until after Ghost Game was over, and both of their profiles are heavily tied to Quantumon. There's also a track in Ghost Game's OST titled "destruction and regeneration", which to me just sounds like it was made specifically for Proximamon. I'm not saying the staff is lying, I'm saying that there's probably been a misunderstanding on what they actually said. To me it seems more likely that the Digimon they were ACTUALLY not told about were Fumamon, Bombermon, Ghilliedhumon and Zanmetsumon, but people interpolated that statement to explain the ending.

i think my biggest problem with ghostgame is that i went in with such high expectations, knowing the v-tamer author was involved, that the show was geared towards an older audience, and that ghostgame was going to be paying homage to the horror genre, had me thinking ghost game could be a contender for my new favorite season. so when the plot never picked up, it was that much more disappointing.

@renf.3077 Год назад
Maybe it’s because I’ve been disconnected from the franchise (I haven’t watched anything digimon-related since the middle of Frontier), but I recently got back into it and binged everything I hadn’t seen (plus, I gave Frontier another shot and rewatched the first 3 series)… and I gotta say, Ghost Game was my favorite. The horror elements, monster-of-the-week episodic format, and how they incorporated mons into the material world through Holo-ghosts was cool and original (and the ungawdly amounts of body horror is just my vibes-I have used Are You Afraid of the Dark to describe the show to my friends as well). They nixed the isekai for the most part, which is refreshing every once in awhile, and the ending/big reveal, while weak (and rushed), was definitely better-executed than a lot of Digimon series. Considering there are so many plot holes in every season, I thought this one did a good job. Plus, all the partner digimon were great. Ruli could have used more characterization, but this is anime… are we really surprised the girl plays second fiddle to even her own digimon? (But confession: I grew up on Adventure 02; was just a bit too young to get into the first season. 02 has always been my favorite until Ghost Game. I guess it’s a good thing I don’t engage with fandom, ha!)

This seems to be the opinion from a lot of newer fans or fans that are getting back in. So I overall feel like that was the point of GG was to get fans back in or attract new fans so don't feel bad if you enjoyed the season it's a lot of fun! A lot of seasons tend to be divisive since 02 to be honest lol
@the_echoYT

Y'know what, I disagree regarding Ghost Game's long-term reception. From this point forward, anyone getting into Ghost Game is going to be able to watch the show as fast as they like. And as someone who skipped weeks and watched multiple episodes back-to-back several times over GG's run, lemme tell ya: this show gets real repetitive, real fast. Especially in the second half. If anything, time will be less kind to GG than most previous series, as its messy writing and tedious formula will be more apparent than it ever was while airing live. It has all the same problems Young Hunters suffered, and runs almost three times as long. That said, I still enjoyed it more than Young Hunters. But that's not a very high bar to clear.
@JustinVillemure

This is a good take. Better than when you said Digimon has always been episodic lol. S1 and 3 are peak narrative construction and story telling, strong themes and emotional impacts - just rewatched Tamers and boy do I still cry at the end. Ghost Game could have been better if it actually focused on telling a plot, especially with all the things it was trying to establish with GulusGammamon only to then make him an anti-hero... really makes his first appearance when he goes to attack Hiro and the others seem melodramatic, but hey, Ghost Game did nothing special. Its fun, but on a very surface level, its pretty braindead otherwise, no themes or meaning to it.
@Xanaxdu
@Xanaxdu Год назад
Still haven't seen young hunters but only time will tell. Considering people are going back and enjoying tri I think anything is possible lol especially if you go in with a different mindset. I can definitely see the formula becoming stale if you are marathoning it. But at the same time if someone knew that it was very episodic and MOTW coming in as opposed to us who thought it would become more serialized would they be as disappointed? Again only time will tell as people continue to get into the franchise
@JustinVillemure

@@Xanaxdu If you are a Digimon fan, then I don't think its unreasonable to expect another Digimon series, to be a narrative, especially when the bar, at its peak, is to tell a story of letting go of one's childhood - which, most Digimon series (the best ones) aim to tell. Ghost Game is the only Digimon show of this kind, other than Young Hunters, but that was a small run POST Xros Wars. Ghost Game lacks any kind of substance other then being fun entertainment... which is fine to enjoy, but most Digimon shows accomplish this while having themes and emotional impact.
@Xanaxdu
@Xanaxdu Год назад
Ture they do have that impact, and I agree with you but you also have to understand that the staff of this anime specifically tried to capture an audience of kids not older digimon fans. Stuff like the movie projects are for us where the anime are being aimed at a new generation. That obviously doesn't absolve GG of it's issues but it's slightly unfair to compare it to what came before considering it's goal from the beginning was to make something episodic and not worry too much about a large spanning narrative. It wasn't trying to be adventure or tamers it was just trying to make a fun show for kids to be able to tune in whenever and not have to worry about missing something.
@JustinVillemure
@JustinVillemure Год назад
@@Xanaxdu I think the show struggles with actually conveying that, it has too many recurring elements, from Clockmon, Dracmon, Mummymon, Black Tailmon, Gulus, Hiro’s dad, villains left open ended (memorable ones) - even a noticeable shift after Bokomon’s death. It did things that contradict episodic. I get what you are saying, but I think its a failure on the part of the creators and sillier still they were seeking young children with this set up, when Digimon has always been primarily for children. They could have just done episodic but they kept trying to do more than that to Ghost Game’s detriment. The GulusGammamon “plot” is the most glaring aspect and what hurt Ghost Game - its clearly trying to be a plot in a wanabe episodic show. Ultimately I don’t like Ghost Game because it is Digimon without any of the actual impact or unique themes that make Digimon so gratifying to watch. This is Digimon at its most baseline, at its cheapest form of entertainment. Relying on “horror” instead of anything of actual substance.

Ghost Game was very creative with what it brought each episode and I genuinely was looking forward to the next episode each week. I am a bit miffed at the Digimon that said "We'll meet again" not coming back for another episode, Heck why tease Moon Milleniummon so much right before the finale and not use them. I think this probably happened because the showrunners eventually had to clamp down on their ambition and end the show. I really think they were planning on doing a 100 episode show, but the execs were seeing the diminishing ratings as the show aged and said "Wrap it up" to them. As for the Meicrackmon episode I think why people were disappointed she didn't show up again is because in other Digimon shows there would be a falling out like that episode ended on and that Digimon would return to save the day a couple episodes later and become a partner Digimon. Ghost Game didn't work that way though and because the episodes are self contained almost nothing from previous episodes had an effect on future episodes, which is a shame. Heck there was a Meicoomon in episode 32, and I was assuming when I saw Meicrackmon in the preview for episode 50 that it was that Meicoomon evolved. Digimon being Digimon though the evolutions can be very strange and all in all the episode was better than my assumption that it was that Meicoomon coming back for revenge. If anything it was kind of nice to see that Meicoomon show up in one of the stills, I think with Angoromon's group, at the end of the last episode and they didn't just disappear like episode 32 implied. I do think the ending did set up a potential sequel series though. If it takes place not too long after Ghost Game it would be nice to see Meicrackmon and Riku getting over their differences and being friends, or Lilithmon coming back and being a villain for an arc or something like that. Also if they do make a sequel series to Ghost Game they need to find a better balance between the main plot and episodic episodes. I enjoyed Ghost Game a lot, but I cannot recommend it to anyone who's in it for the plot at all. It is easily one of the most vague and underwhelming main plots in the entire series.
@Xanaxdu
@Xanaxdu Год назад
Totally agree. I would recommend it to new fans who kinda want a rundown on how digimon work but I would warn them that it's more of an episodic thing than a long spanning journey like Adventure and the other series. If we get anything after this like a sequel it would definitely be different based off of the fact that the scenario writer isn't going to be the one running the show. Then again I don't know how the japanese fans responded to GG and they usually cater to them more than western fans so idk what the approach would be

@@Xanaxdu Well the showrunner kind of made the excuse for the episodic format with saying he made the show for the TikTok generation and their short attention span. To be very honest though I grew up on American cartoons and they usually did episodes in less than half the time, so Ghost Game wasn't as short attention span as he made it out to be. Still a better focus on the plot, even if it's still episodic, for the next show would be good. I can guess that the formula got a bit tired after about half the season, so I can see the execs saying "okay that's enough wrap it up" instead of letting them go on for as long as they probably wanted to.

From what I've seen as far as interviews are concerned it wasn't any type of studio interference that made them end the show they just kind of ended it the way they did. If I had to guess they just didn't really know how to end it given that they were too stuck on keeping it episodic for so long

I love animation, I’m an artist, I want to focus on the art not a sentence that pops up shorter than the time it takes me to read it. It’s not real watching. I suggest you binge it in English. The devimon arc is peak digimon. With all its problems, it is a good successor to the original. Here’s hoping ghost game’s dub does the same thing for me. Cause I was absurdly angry after the finale.

No. Because Young Hunters, 2020, and the Masaru punches stuff show were poorer. Ghost Game is respectively mid-tier round about Frontier/02 level. The show's producers said from the get go it was always going to be an episodic anthology, so I never understood why people threw a wobbler when it didn't deliver something it never actually promised in the first place. 🤷‍♂️ Personally I would liken the show's structure and format to the X-Files. Where it is heavily MotW based, with the odd mythology plotline episode sprinkled in. Additionally it also has one of my most favourite casts out of any season. Maybe not developed, but still fun. I liked how the Partner Digimon had their own lives beyond acting as satellites around their designated humans.

This is Digimons biggest flaw with their animes atm. It starts strong and then goes into basically filler with a tiny amount of movement over 20+ episodes. Has something happen that matters and then goes back to basically filler and just ends in one episode rushed. I feel robbed of my time and interest for half a pay off

Honestly, what a lousy way to go for this show, which can even be more disappointing than I could imagine. I don't understand all the episodes, but this could be one of the worst Digimon anime, and I was disappointed. It was so rushed, and there was no plot line, character development, or much of a story, this is probably the worst Digimon ending I have ever seen, and I don't hate this series, but I am disappointed with it. When so many people liked it in the beginning, and I mean everyone was easily swayed by one moment in the entire episode, praising it for what a good show it is, and then overall some good moments in Ghost Game because you like it? Also, they were defending it because other people didn't like it. I mean, wow, just, wow. I can't even imagine the level of problems with this show. I mean, this is what we got in this show? The writers, creators, and producers have failed at doing anything with the very things they tried to set up, and it just showcases how messed up Ghost Game's whole production is, and they didn't know what they were doing with it. Honestly, they did a poor job with the main antagonist. I could have imagined what could happen if Hiro managed to control Gulusgammamon early on in the show, and he could be like Beelzemon from Tamers or from Xros Wars as the reluctant anti-hero. Not to mention, their so many things that happen in the show, but barely anything happens. The whole GulusGammamon episode continuously hinted Hokuto has come up several times. Also, Black Gatomon recurred with more questions than answers. Clockmon and Mummymon returned as the only characters who got development. The carry-over from Bokomon's death to the next episodes, the black Digimon, who showed up every time Gulus Gammamon did, was not just episodic, etc. Is this just me, or even I feel like we were expecting a second part of Ghost Game, but we're not getting it? It felt so "unfinished" since so many things weren't confused, and this could have been if we didn't get the monster of the week type of story, and there better be a continuation of this series because an ending like this is unsatisfying and maybe if we do get a Season 2? Who knows when we're getting another season? But if we do, the writers should not make the same mistakes as the first season. However, this ending is pretty weak. This series had great potential and squandered a majority of it. Let's compare it to Adventure 2020, that show wasn't perfect, but it covered EVERYTHING, and we did get a decent, resolved end that satisfied much of the audience. This show could just cut down a lot of these Digimon appearing through these 67 episodes, give us more plot, more Gulus episodes, and what was the purpose behind the Black Digimon, and everything else's we could have a good show. You can do more without MAKING IT MORE. A lot of these episodes were unnecessary filler. A lot of character growth could have played out, a lot more impact and danger, and even kept the horror themes. The final episode felt rushed, and the tension got heavily cut. There was no Arcturusmon and Proximamon. The last boss happens to be an Ultimate-level, the digital world, and needs more exploration. The animation and fight scenes were good, but the story overall was odd, and the pacing was horrendous, with probably 90% of the series revolving around the filler and episodic adventures. Too bad we waited until the end to bring everything together cause this Digimon season should have so much potential. But it almost seems they didn't know what they were going for with this series. And yet, Toei seems to not care about has considered the many Digimon Adventure things that have come in the last decade to exploit Adventure's identity and nostalgia. Also, so many people hate the 2020 version, but at least it had a decent final boss and even the appearance of alter-s. Ghost Game didn't even have a Mega final boss, evolutions missing, and not even a great battle, and even with its serious problems, Ghost Game is much worse than the crap that was in Adventure 2020, and Ghost Game should have established that in their show, not through external data books or wiki pages. It has some fun episodes here and there, but it's 100% filler of anything it sets up, diffuses in the most anti-climactic way, and squanders with wasted potential. I am left more angered and heartbroken, I'm over this than I was in the 2020 version. Adventure 2020 was awful, but it at least told a story. Ghost Game didn't do so much of anything so important out of the 67 episodes. At least with 2020, I can see updated action with the original cast, and the story doesn't feel like a total waste. In Ghost Game, is just wasted potential and a waste of time. Not to mention, wtf happened to Milleniumon? The 2020 version of Milleniumon almost destroyed the world, and here it's just an accessory in Hiro's house, and 2020 is not even close to this final. This show had some potential of its concept and its characters, only to do nothing with all of that by the end makes it all feel like nothing but a waste of time, which it is. Also, instead of being a horror/slice-of-life show where it mostly goes nowhere, it should have been a horror/detective shows like Bungou Stray Dogs, Death Note, Black Butler, Monster, Psycho-Pass, Stranger Things, Ghost Hunt, Kamen Rider W, and its anime counterpart called Fuuto PI because those shows are a perfect example of mixing things with having the monster of the week formula with some plot and character development. If we get a new Digimon show, I hope it's much better than what we got in Ghost Game.

Good luck with that. You remind me when I kept saying there's a plot coming(back at like episode 30 of Ghost Game)... If you get a season 2 (you won't) but if you did, expect more of the same - meaningless episodic, vapid and void of any themes or meaning. Ultimately, it won't be happening.

@@minicle426 you bring nothing to the discussion, just like Ghost Game brought nothing to its plot. Go condescend to someone else. Move along troglodyte.

This whole show would have make more sense to be a horror and mystery show of all that stuff happened in the story. Instead of being a horror and sliced-of-life episodic show to have the most laziest protagonists in the franchise.
