I have one, there are lots of issues with the ignition - won't turn on frequently, sometimes the engine warning lit up, sometimes abs and traction control, One time the ignition completely cut off while overtaking no abs, traction control... I felt like I was going to heaven/ hell somewhere 🤣. Finally the dealer replaced the keys and immobilizer control unit ( in just 996km) The funniest thing I've seen in my 400 was the distance to empty --- it never ever showed an accurate reading. But... Everything else is pretty good and pretty impressive.
Great video, loads of info without any silly music. Will have to have a go on one. I have a Himalayan as a winter/ fun bike and although its fast enough its really asthmatic in the mid range. This little trumpet looks a lot more lively. Nice one.
I own one, purchase it for 2.8 Lakhs INR around 2500 euros. Happy with the purchase, there was an issue, bike stopped suddenly while pressing clutch for too long. Now it's resolved with update, not sure if it's still in the exported bikes.
Test rode couple of days ago 😮 engine kinda feels stressed 😢 Vibration ~ buzz is definitely there after 5k rpm at least in pegs Breaks are extremely good... Suspension is good Gearbox is buttery smooth Clutch is light and good
Great review, I ordered a black Speed 400 back in Oct '23, but I will switch the footpegs and holders for the ones from the Scrambler to get a little more legroom and more open seating position as I am 6'2 (187cm) tall. Also, I am going up at least 1 tooth on the front sprocket as almost every review states that 1st and 2nd gear are more or less useless. Hopefully, it will land here in Denmark for delivery next week.
@@siu281 I love the look of the scrambler, but the speed is designed for road use and I will be doing 98% city and b roads. Also, the Scrambler is 4 cm tall to climb onto, and I have a small disability that makes it hard enough to get on the speed (I should be riding a vespa😅)
When I go to the Triumph website and “build” a bike, it looks to me like the quilted seat option is thicker than standard. Other than observation though, I can’t find any specs for it. Also trying to see if the Scrambler and Speed seats are swappable🤷🏻
Thanks for your review. It appears that Triumph can make rather good smaller bikes too. If these had been available when I bought an MT03 a few years ago when getting back into biking I definitely would have tried and maybe bought one. I'm still very much in love with my Street Triple, now coming up to three years. :>)
MT03 is a nice bike. There are advantages of a twin over a Thumper. I was very close to buying an MT03 but decided I wanted a retro bike (own a Suzuki GSX 150 already) and was checking out the Yam XSR 150 but my GSX is already a 150. Then it happened...Triumph was releasing the 400 series in my country...the answer to my search and prayers for an affordable thumper in a retro package. Thanks Triumph!
They should also make a 660 version with the 660 engine...for me 400 is not enough, and 900 it too much... however this little bike is rally beautiful. Cheers from Brazil
Just binged a few videos, didn't realise you're just up the road from me! Some super reviews, very clear and concise! Also any sport bikes on the horizon taking your fancy? Liked and subbed 👍🏼
@@marksgaragestuff I'm on an fz8, looking to change soon. Going into Webb's is dangerous for my wallet 😂 they all look amazing! I'm wanting to go mt10,that sound is something else.
@@marksgaragestuff they remind me of a transformer. The only other two that tempt me are the superduke and the tuono. However I've not been able to get on anything like an R1 as of yet,it's always been practicality for me,nakeds being more manoeuvrable, but loosing a little on the top end. I may have a switch up!
They don't understand why they're called "thumpers". Even the RE thumpers have some vibrations in their 350 series bikes. I test rode a Hunter. They're ok bikes but they're heavy, underpowered and do have some vibration.
As a chubby American. 6ft 240lbs finding an entry level bike has been dificult. Where i live i have a section of interstate i have to drive daily for my commute to work. It seems like it handled your motorway quite well. I couldnt read the speedo, but my section of commute is 70mph do you think it will handle running at that speed for an hour or will it buzz the nethers to oblivion?
Hey mate - yeah I think personally it will be fine at higher speeds - obviously not going to be as fast as the 600+cc bikes but personally o felt it had plenty of punch
Thanks you for this video. I am wondering how are the vibes at 60mph? Does it feel buzzy at 60 mph? I know the rpm's are up there when traveling that fast, and it all depends on how well the engine is balanced.
Felt fine to me… to be fair I was really impressed with how it handles the higher speeds… I’d advise you go and get yourself a test ride on one :-) I think its a brilliant bike
I enjoyed the video, it looks quite punchy. When its on the dual carriageway/motorway is it happy at 70 or is there more there?. I fancy getting a second bike and was thinking of the Royal Enfield 350 (fancy doing a DGR) but it seems like its at its very limit at 70, if it even gets there. Now i know it's not going to break any land speed records but i'd rather have something that was comfortable at motorway speeds if i have to use one. safety thing really.
Mine is ordered. Swapped a Harley twin cam that I didn't like. Only glitch in the process, the bike is expected in April. Wonder if that's due to some wankers lobbing missiles in the Red Sea, so causing shipping to detour around Africa.... Had a short test ride on a Speed. Shockingly good!!! Itching to ride it soon!!
If it's in regards to that snapped swingarm, that was owned by a guy who rented it out as a hire bike and it was "dropped" and abused. Curious about any issues though as a work mate is interested in getting one of these.
The only issue reported in the UK have been to do with the immobiliser light and a very small handful have reported starting issues. Triumph now vet all bike at Hinckley before passing them onto dealers so you can buy with confience.
Hi From France, I test it on January 31st, same great feeling on that bike, I expect a non torquy engine but no it is reasonably torquy and Reva well, exhaust sound just right, rear view very good, easy to handle brake clutch shifter. Only the fix lever could be replaced by adjustable ones. The power is just at the right level not too less not too much but still satisfying and giving motor bike feeling on which power is manageable. I don’t know if I take the blue or red?
Ahhh mate miles off - I don’t lean at the best of times but the bike 100% made me feel comfortable to do so… I think it would be great for hairpins… you going to give one a test ride?
I wonder if you guys also get the bike made in india or atleast components made in India. Often the components and build quality is astonishingly of lower grade of the ones sold here in india.
i have noticed that most common issues of this bike comes from European reviews but none here in Asia. may be its a weather condition perhaps. May be its not conditioned to the weather in Eurpoe/America area?...
Do Triumph do pannier racks, or even a complete luggage setup for the Speed 400? Why don't reviewers ever include these things? Some of us like to tour - even on a 'smaller' capacity machines.
Nothing added here that we haven't seen in a score or more other rider impression/reviews. I'm not sure why there were frequent comparisons to the 400X...They're practically the same bike so it's a null contribution. There was no recorded "testing" of the 400s known software spots and the reference to the testers indebtedness to the Triumph dealer the bike came from is a virtual flag indicating no fault will be found that might impact on the availability of test bikes in the future.
I just bought the same bike as you yesterday, in the same colour! I hope I won't be disappointed. In any case, I really liked the test ride. The engine break-in isn't too difficult?
I'll be receiving it next Friday! There was only one left in the shop. Otherwise in France, it depends on the area, but it's about a month's wait.@@marksgaragestuff
I absolutely hate the way the gauges are set up. Would much rather have the RPM display as an analog gauge with a digital speed display. I just took delivery of mine, and the RPM display is virtually unreadable while driving. Also, the bike from the factory is geared way too low. One tooth up on the front sprocket is needed to make it rideable.
Definitely yes. I am 5'7" too. I ride an Interceptor 650 (which has more weight and slightly taller seat height (805MM). Having ridden my cousins Scrambler 400 (which is 835 MM) I can empathically say that you can manage the bike. Its also relatively light so its ok if you have shorter in-seams like me, you will still be comfortable.
Most importantly: it has a passenger seat 😄😄 I mean, did you notice how most modern bikes have such a short tail that there is no room for a passenger at all?? What's the point of a bike if you cannot say "jump on, let's go for a ride"
Tank logo and paint scheme are UGLY. ( same for the Trident 660) A plain color paint and the old Triumph vintage logo would have been much better. (and possibly cheaper) "Chrome branding" everywhere looks gimmick, just to give ILLUSION of Triumph quality, but of course, its FAR from their Thaïland made bikes. ( Street triple etc...) Just CHEAP INDIAN BIKE 100% made by Bajaj with Triumph logo and shiny finish. Cheap single disc Ji Juan front brake. No name indian fork. Cheap plastic mirrors that "look like" the much higher quality ones you get on their higher cc bikes., exhaust looks like chinese crap. And already leaking problems on the indian motor... as usual. 6000 bucks the fake small Triumph, is VERY EXPENSIVE for what it is. "Honest" review of a bike from your Triumph dealer friend... 😂
@@robshaw2319Royal Enfield bikes are heavy unreliable crap. I ve tried many of them and i ll NEVER buy their cheaply made, even if nice vintage looking bikes. And more expensive than high quality japanese bikes to service 😂... No thanks, i m not a stupid buyer like most people nowadays. I pay for true quality, not for illusion, "bling bling", or a fake premium image with a marketing branding on the tank... 😉
Getting so worked up and so angry about a new motorcycle 😂 Rather than just not buying it and moving on with your life, you’re watching RU-vid videos and leaving absolute dribble in the comments section. Your wife is one lucky lady 😂
@@aja8590 I have been fan of Triumph for a long time, i ve owned 2 Street triple, fantastic, high quality bike, for a reasonable price. And i ve always made their promotion around me and in comments on RU-vid. But when they come to sell crap at premium price just to make BIG PROFIT , sorry but i have to tell the Truth. ( Same thing with cheaply made BMW F séries or KTM 790, 890 and now 990 made in china or at least the motor, with premium prices, options and servicing, but low reliability...) When you love motorbikes, especially some brands , you expect them to go on in the right direction. Not to make junk.. Thats why im worried. Can you understand that ?? How is your wife with a stupid always smiling guy ? 😘
Im 6 feet tall and this is the most perfect size bike I've ever sat on. The seat is so covetable. If it was a five hundred I'd buy one this year. But my 21 Duke 390 has more pick up and power so I'll stick with it and pray that Triumph make this exact bike a 500cc. Hi from Brisbane Australia 🦘
Great review, no body ever get's out on the motor way as you call it there. Talking about being able to flat foot, and that the bike is lite, and does not get blown around in windy conditions. These are the things I want to know. Not just power and cornering. Thanks.
Must say Triumph has done the best job of maintaining quality while building these small bikes in India. Of course only time will tell, but the appearance of the bike is just as lovely as the UK products. I want one to replace my missing (stolen) 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot. That bike reminded me about the sheer joy of Thumpers. Probably going to sell my 2003 Yamaha FZ1, as I don’t need all that power weight and complexity at my age.
You seem to like the bike for very good reasons but here in my wsnting to use it to vommute world what does fantastic miles per gallon mean ? I appreciate everyones use is different but what sort of cross country mpg will it do?. I have a deposit on the Speed but am not tall, but have had a quick but very cold test ride and it was ok but am not experienced on geared bikes but this seems the better of the sub 500cc machines available.
I just my honest opinion… not saying I’m right or wrong but if your considering getting one I would suggest you test ride one and take it from there :-)
I'm really torn between the two and there's no place near me that allows test rides so I'd have to make a decision by sitting on a static bike. Nearest Triumph dealer is about 100+ miles away so that's keeping me away from Triumphs in general because of the lack of dealers/service. I just took in a 2019 Honda CB300R on trade for my CB500X (which was too heavy for me) and that lightweight (313 lbs) Honda 300 is a blast to ride, but the suspension/saddle is very stiff on our terrible blacktop roads so it's not an all-day ride bike. I'm hoping the Triumph will bring the same fun riding but with a softer suspension for these rough roads. If you've ever ridden a 300R I'd appreciate your comparison.
Great review, thanks and I've watched many reviews on these bikes, so test rode a red speed and red Scrambler today, wow what a thumper, thats one busy buzzy lively engine, both models exhausts sound fantastic. Taken the plunge and ordered a black Speed, reasons are.. I can flat foot it, its 10kg lighter and more manoverable which is handy at my age, takes up less space in the garage, height and width. I'm 5ft 8". Dont get me wrong the Scrambler is a smashing looking bike and lots roomier, just a bit tall for me. So the Speed came out tops, luckily picking it up next week.🙂 what I did notice was 2 second hand scramblers in the showroom but no Speeds 🤔 Personally my heart went with the Scrambler mainly due to ascetics but my head went with the Speed, I would advise test ride both and ask for at least 3 hours for each bike.
Wow, I'm impressed Brits love their bikes and ride in such chilling weather. Great review I'm here in Thailand I'm tempted to buy the Speed 400 it's less than £3400 here.
In Thailand too. After delays upon my part, it appears that I'll own a Speed 400 in early November. If paid in full in September, there's a 3,000 Baht discount from 157,900 before the price goes up in October. Purchased at Param 5 from Mick.
