Hi everyone, I have gotten a lot of questions about what is next for me as an educator, but before I get there, I thought it was important for me to sit down and share some of my story with you. This month, is mental health awareness month, and I think this video has come at a perfect time. I think it is important to talk about mental health, I believe it is something that should be normalized and discussed. Sharing my story over the past two years has been a true journey, but I do it because you never know who you could help along the way who could also be battling anxiety and PTSD. I have learned that it is okay to not be okay, to surrender to our feelings, and to listen to our hearts, because it will always guide us towards where we are meant to be. In this video, I open up to you about my teaching journey from my student teaching days, to my first year, to overcoming tragedy, to where I am today. I hope you know that you are not alone. You are strong. You are worthy of new beginnings. Thank you all for being here and for supporting me throughout this journey. I love you all and I hope this video gives you more understanding into my journey.

I went through a tragedy at the childcare center I work at too this year. I am an assistant toddler teacher to 18-24 month olds at one of the Children of Americas in Pennsylvania and on February 27, a car crashed through one of the PreK classrooms during nap time. Luckily my classroom is very far from that room so my students and I were safe but the car ran over 5 children and we had to evacuate because the firefighters were concerned that the building may collapse while we were inside. The children were rushed to the hospital (4 with minor injuries and 1 was in critical condition) and they all survived and are fully physically healed now. It was very traumatizing for us all and we got transferred to 3 other centers within our chain while the building is being repaired due to the damage so we were all separated. We are still healing and had to go into quarantine 2 weeks later due to covid but we (the admins, staff, and families) keep telling each other that we will get through this together. Your story inspires me to remain strong💛

As being someone who is about to be a first year teacher, your passion is inspiring. My mental health has been so debilitating lately and I question if I am ready to be a teacher for my students because they are my passion. This video is comforting in knowing its okay to take time and work on yourself. You're beauty is so radiant and God's plan is far much greater for you to even comprehend. Embracing uncertainty is my motto for this year and your videos have been so inspiring. Never let the bright light in which you let off grow dim! xoxo

I had to leave my first teaching job this semester due to it being a deeply unsafe and toxic environment for its teachers. I have a number of fears around getting back into the classroom, but hearing you reminds me of the reasons I got into this profession and the love and impact it can have on students’ lives. I had a bad start, but you’ve really helped me not lose sight of that dream. Thank you for your openness on this platform

You have *no idea* how much you inspire your viewers / those around you. I've always wanted to learn about linguistics and culture and travel around the world teaching English and giving an opportunity of education to those who have little to none. One of my middle school English teachers really inspired me, as she would go to teach in Africa and China during the summers! I'm almost at the end of my own educational journey before I enter into college, but what I will always bring along with me is the life lessons and advice that my teachers have told me. I wish, I just wish there was a way I could let all of my teachers know how much they actually helped in pushing their students to success. I want to show them how much I've come so far, and how proud they should be! I always thought how it would feel to receive a letter, or a picture of your student from 12 years ago who you taught in say, kindergarten, now graduating in their cap & gown with a diploma in their hand- knowing that what you taught them helped them get this far in life, that everything paid off! Teachers deserve ALL the love and respect in the world, and more. Happy Teachers Appreciation Week! 🍎😃

I know this is hard to share, but I hope you know how much of an impact you have had on people. Your videos always put me in a good mood and I am always inspired by you!! I found your channel when I was going through a really hard time. Something happened to me at my school. It became very difficult to attend. Just like you said, I didn’t feel safe. I had the happy, go-lucky part of me on the outside, but I had a part of me that was dying on the inside. I finally had a breakdown when I started college. When I came out of it I rewatched a bunch of your videos and they helped me get through it. I know it is hard to be positive and you may feel as though you have to be happy all of the time, but your authenticity has significantly impacted my life for the better so I thank you for that.💛

I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I start my senior year of college this fall in English/history secondary ed. Your video was so inspiring and I think your unbreakable organization is wonderful in highlighting how important it is to talk about mental health. As teachers, our job is not only to teach our students, but it’s to advocate for them. To advocate for policies to protect them and give them the resources they need. Thank you for advocating for others and also showing that you can do that as well as take care of yourself at the same time. Thank you for all that you do!❤️❤️

This was my first video of yours, and wow. I came not knowing where you taught or what your story was. Thank you so much for sharing. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but as an 11th grader, I’ve obviously grown up and had my eyes opened to the, to be frank, dangers of the field. Actually, the first time I remember really questioning my desired career path was after Parkland which was my freshman year. I am no way claiming the tragedy as my own as I live in western Pennsylvania and know no one who was directly affected. I will have spent all of my K-12 years post 1999, the beginning of a uniquely horrific era in our schools. From the time I was 5, I’ve known how to hide in the corner in the dark. And after 2018, we were taught to shatter windows with our fists and use textbooks as projectiles. Twelve hundred miles away, that tragedy had an impact. I have to wonder if all students who are growing up now will have some degree of PTSD (obviously not to your extent but we’ve grown up worrying we’ll be next). I do hold my breath at the sound of a slammed door. I don’t like school dances (way too many people in one place). But if you can pursue what you love, so can I. Thank you for sharing. Your story is more inspiring than I can put into words.

@@fivefootoneteacher Always a pleasure. In a slightly different way, I can completely agree with you when you talked about how triggering the fire alarms were. Throughout my life, I had dealt with anxiety to loud noises, and fire alarms were the worst for me. I believe it started back in kindergarten when the alarms went off while I was in the auditorium during my class concert. My school was very old, so our alarms were very old and much louder than the ones we have today. It was getting so bad for me in school because we held drills on a regular basis except in the winter. Once we realized what was going on, my mom and I were able to work things out to where I would be removed from thee building prior to any drills. But once middle school came around, my school tried everything they could to cure my alarm anxiety, to the point where they held surprise drills. At the time, Michigan law required 6 drills a year. My 7th and 8th grade year combined, I counted 17 fire drills. 10 one year and 7 the other. The surprise drills made things worse for me, and I couldn't really stand up for myself because of how strict my school was. Once I got into high school things started to get better for me, yet I still have anxiety with them. I definitely understand how triggering they can be

Brittany, thank you so much for making this video and opening up. I am currently a first-year teacher. I started student teaching in August and got my first teaching job in December. Having my already short first year, be cut even shorter by Covid has been really tough to process. In one way, I know closing schools is what needs to happen, but at the same time, I am still heartbroken because I miss my students and I feel like I have to put my passion on hold. I know this is nothing compared to what you went through, but I can completely resonate with how you were feeling at the end of your first year, and I can imagine how difficult it was for you to decide to take a break from teaching. Teaching is so much more than just a job, it is a passion. It is so hard to leave our students behind, even if it is for the best. I am so glad you are healing and that you will be back in the classroom soon!

Ms. Brittany, I personally struggle with anxiety as well. I have never developed PSTD from a tragic incident. However, I am empathetic towards your situation. I am so proud of you for following your dream to become a teacher. English is my favorite subject too. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in English for secondary education, you taught ninth grade English at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Now that you are taking this break, you have a lot more time. You are the advisor for the Dance Marathon Club at the school you taught and the founder of the Unbreakable Organization. I am excited for you to get back into a classroom the following academic year. If you are writing anything, you can consider publishing it. I would love to read a book written by you. As for self care, I really make sure to spend time on the things I enjoy. I just finished reading Magic for Marigold by Lucy Maud Montgomery and I cannot stop thinking about it. I am actuated to write a lot more. I can understand how rewarding teaching is. I loved hearing your entire journey. I love you

I want to share a story that hopefully doesn't trigger anyone. My first practicum placement of my education degree was in an elementary school. That first or second day, we had an active shooter drill when we had to go into this closet with all the students and our cooperating teacher. After the drill and the class ended, my teacher said " I sit with my back to the door because I can't live with myself knowing I let one of my students die." This mentality was so sad that teachers today have to think about that possibility.

I actually took some time off from the classroom for my mental health as well, because I wasn't taking the time that I needed for myself to be whole and healthy. I'm going to be back in the classroom in a couple of weeks (late start) and I'm hoping that with continued therapy and support that I can do this. It's uplifting to know that there's someone like you in the community who promotes mental health awareness, so thank you for doing that. We can do this together!

Thank you so much for this video. One of my students was killed by another student in front of my school and it was the worst thing to ever happen to our community and school. I too was just pushing on until I broke down at school and had to take a few weeks off and then this pandemic happened. School used to be a place I loved, but I couldn't be in the building anymore. Now we are teaching virtually and while I miss seeing my kids in person, the space away from our building has helped me so much. A space can be so triggering for us, but we are strong and can overcome obstacles

You are SO strong and I am inspired by your candor. I cannot imagine going through what you did, and I pray you find peace through time. Taking the time to rebuild mentally and emotionally is imperative. I am currently a freshman in college majoring in Early Childhood, and this is such a real and scary thing that happens to schools. Through your passion and hardwork in advocating for other educators, you are making a huge difference. Thank you for being honest and spreading love, even when life seems so uncertain. When you decide to enter a classroom again, you will be a blessing to your students, just like you have always been. XOXO

I am a little late on watching this video but wow.. This video seriously hit me so much. You are so strong and unbreakable, you knew what was the best thing for you and took a break. It is not easy to tell yourself to take a step back from something you love, but doing that is better for you, and opens more doors for yourself. I am so proud of the teacher and person you are. Being a elementary education college senior in texas, this showed me what hope, self-care, and passion looks like.

Britt, I am SO proud of you. I have been following you since the beginning of your teaching journey, and I could not be more proud of you. You have inspired me SO much for when I start teaching kindergarteners in two years to fully pour all of me into them and to be myself. Seeing how strong you are, how UNBREAKABLE you are, has made me feel that, too! You are by far the most inspirational person I have ever come across. From health and fitness, to mental health, to teaching, to your lifestyle, I have learned SO much for you and I am so thankful for that. Thank you for spreading light in everyone's life. Thank you for making this video!! I just gradated from CC with my Associates transfer degree and will be going to uni next semester to work toward my BS in English Education! I often get funny looks when I tell someone I want to teach high school English. I even get asked, “high school? TW: mass shootings, weapons (in detail) The day that this happened I was at school and the swat team and search dogs were outside of our school at the end of the day. It was very scary because they didn’t tell us what was going on. After school we heard about parkland and we also learned what was going on with our school. My school and our alternative school had mass shooting threats that one of the previous student had made. They had weapons, bombs, and plans in the making. Their grandmother thankfully found these plans and items in his room and called the police. But it was terrifying hearing what happened in parkland and what could have happened in our school/community.
