My horse gets surgery

I’m soppy. Seeing that poor horse with the root canals. No wonder he was shaking his head. 18 months ago a nerve in a tooth died. As it was dying the pain literally brought me to the ground. It must have been hellish for this horse. I’m glad he has such a caring owner who can afford his treatment

I had a head shaker, and it’s the most frustrating condition! What works great for one horse has no effect on another. I tried everything. The UV mask had no effect. What -helped- with my horse was a daily antihistamine during the warmer months and a nose mask that attaches to the bridle or halter noseband. For the nose net to really work with my horse I had to lightly tie it down with a strip of pantyhose material. There’s a great video on RU-vid about how to make a nose net out of pantyhose-it’s a hysterical video. That pantyhose nose net worked the best for my horse, but it’s so ugly! My 15 yr old TB gelding has had head shakers for the last 3 summers, I have had his teeth done, had his ears checked for mites, had his eyes checked, nothing seemed to be making any difference to him, one vet suggested I put him down if he was becoming dangerous, this summer at the first signs of head shaking I made a concerted effort to watch his body language and noticed that he would often go to the water barrel and pick it up in teeth and drop it splashing water over his face which seemed to ease it, I washed his face and mussel with an anti fungal/bacterial shampoo and the head shaking stopped almost instantly, I only need to wash his face every few weeks now, I don't know what causes it but I can control it, good look with Fletch from WA, love the channel

My horse is a headshaker and wears a 95% UV protective flymask. Got a bit of experience with headshaking and will contact you with information that has helped my horse.

Fletch is such a handsome boy. The head-shaking might still be from the slight discomfort/healing. It will maybe settle down after he has completely healed. Fingers crossed.

As someone who also has a thoroughbred with chronic issues (his are various lameness issues over the past 2 years that we haven't been able to diagnose yet, in addition to a torn check ligament, cellulitis, and other things that set us back further every couple of months) I totally feel for you. At this point, you just want whatever is going to make Fletch feel good again! Thanks for sharing this process with us, and I'm hoping that he starts showing more and more improvement as he heals up!

I strongly urge all people who own horses to please please have your horses teeth checked via a qualified equine veterinarian who either has a keen interest in dentistry or specialises. Dr Shannon travels extensively and can sedate perform xrays and do complex surgeries and all while he travels. A dentist who is not a vet is physically unable to really see everything going on PERIOD. I hope fletch improves for you ♡

Wow he is beautiful, love his color.

My Dad bought this horse, we still own him lol, and he has absolutely no front teeth- though he gets along fine without them. We always wondered why until about six months after we had bought him and caught him grabbing the barbwire fence right next to the gate we had walked through with his gums, thank goodness not actually on one of the barbs, because he was upset we weren't riding him! Since then we've kinda guessed he probably either did self dentistry or caused enough damage he had to get them removed lol!

While he's recovering maybe some accupuncture? If, worst case scenario, it does continue, it may help him get through summer. If the op does fix it, it'll relax him and speed his recovery. Keep your head up, *he* doesn't look distressed, you're the only worried one.

My horse had to have a tooth out about 10 months ago and she bounced back so fast it was infected deep in the root giving her a snotty nose. she had about 2 weeks off work then was able to do some light schooling in a bitless bridle. She had a check up the other day and its healed so well and the vet is very pleases. it was one of her top back ones too

It could be the nerves in his face and muzzle too. My stallion started that around 2013 and the vet told me he damaged some nerves in his face some how. But he is better now and making baby like crazy. Flitch is a gorgeous gelding, he reminds me of my very first horse I had. Hope you get answers for what is going on with him and I’ll pray for you and your horse. Have faith

Im glad he's bouncing back so quickly. I'm also looking forward to the photos on IG. I just got an new 3yo addition to the family and she bites hay strange. She'll open her mouth mid chew as if it poked her. I can't see any issues. A vet call is in the near future but do you have any ideas?

So he has EOTRH, which is a disease most frequent in older horses. And it effects all of the incisors unfortunately and all would have to be pulled 😔 it sometimes effect the k9s. They function and eat like nothing happened. Even after sedative wears off they’re searching for food 😁

Hope is on the road to recovery and tic tac is getting so big and fur has gone really dark but she is still just as cute only one we didn’t see was peach and I know it was about fletch but is she going good and when are we next going to see her

Head shakers can be related to grass. If you haven't already checked this out, (please excuse if you have already gone down this road, I have not seen your past videos) check out website calmhealthyhorses. I am not connected with it, but I know of horses cured.

Hope this works, I have a seasonal head shaker who becomes almost impossible to ride over spring/summer and early autumn 😔 horrible condition think so much more research needs to be done into it, and what works for one seems to not work for others is so frustrating and expensive when you just want to help them be healthy and happy :(
