My own personal two things that make me feel immediately better are making my bed and cleaning the kitchen. Everything else falls into place after that.
It depends on how annoying you find it? What is it worth for you, example - more time, if you don't have to clean up as much as you do now? How much work and discussions do you think it's worth? I guess it's your husband your referring to? This will probably sound silly, but have you tried talking to him (when he's not tired or hungry) and not complaining but tell him how it feel for you when this happens. And also how you would like things to be. And if possible try to find out why he doesn't want to do those things you wrote. Often people (both men and women) feel that whatever they do it's never enough, and then stop trying, could it be like that? If you can, talk to each other taking turns, one talk for x minutes and the other only listens, and then the other way. And no children or phones if at all possible. Good luck to find routines that make both of you content! (English' not my first language but I think you understand my thoughts)
@Half&Half of a Half you can set loving boundaries around this. “I can’t let you come into the house in your work boots or touch things without washing your hands. I need you to please take the boots off at the door and wash your hands before you do other things in the house. Thanks!”
I wish they run a trial comparing any kind of medication for depression for three months to supplying a home cleaner and an errand runner for three months. I guess some people witheldgant shining spacious homes get depressed and the help intervention wouldn’t mean anything to them, but the rest of us would do very well with a little lifting of the burden…even for a short while.
Ok this is me!! I hate myself after binge watching a show when I should be cleaning. My house is not a mess, but it’s cluttered enough that I don’t want friends over
I came here wanting to know where to start first, and I'm hearing all this B.S. about how this is a mess, etc. WE KNOW it's messy. I came here for a quick 1-2-3 answer as TO WHAT/WHERE to start first. Which would have been nice to know. So this is what I thought this video was about: 1. Start here 2. Do this, this & this 3. Spend XYZ time frame. I don't care about paring down, could care less that she has 3 boys and that she stupidly spends $$ having everyone do their own friggin' laundry. I've been ill for several years, depressed that I got into a marriage I shouldn't have years after my 1st hubs (soulmate, fairy tale maker died) This video was unnecessary and ridiculous.
So true. If clothes are not put away right away. It gets knocked down by me or my dog. Sometimes don’t know what’s been washed and clothes to be washed. So everything gets washed over..
Finally! a video that isn't overcomplicated I know I should be doing these things but it's nice to have a reminder. I instantly scroll past the "I have a written schedule" videos
I don't have kids, I don't have a house or a significant other. But you EXACTLY described my issue. The overwhelming feeling of the loss of control. I am feeling more in control already and as soon as I send this comment I can do a few things I've been putting off for a long time. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Thank you. I'm 23 and live with my bf and cat. It feels like I can't keep up and people are judging me. I have a small place. Just hearing words of confirmation saying that me being overwhelmed is reassuring. Wish I could hug u
For almost two years now I have slowly begun to declutter in organize my house it's not in perfect condition but it's a lot better than it was about 2 years ago
*Get big trash cans for bathroom and kitchen. *Declutter unneeded items. Keep a box for donated items. *Do laundry everyday. Wash, dry and clean in same day. Minimize clothes.
@@TrueScandal same but because I have to work and I have two days in a row where I get up at 6-8 and leave home at 8-10 and the first couple of hours I spend just trying to process my existence and being clumsy since my body doesn't wake up at that time, and leave home until midnight. And every day I return from work at about 11-12 at night, so... Those days I don't do any laundry
As a nanny the parents have housekeeping so I when I arrive the 4 girls and I gather their laundry, dishes (when I am not there they eat where ever) We make beds, then laundry is started, I start dishes and load dish washer((I need a clean kitchen to think)) Then, we return to tidy bedrooms for 7-9. Those total 20 minutes are called "clean sweep" I agree trash goes out, asap!!!
I am FEELING THIS right now. I’ve realized that I am surrounded by clutter and it needs to go away! It’s to a point where I’m considering purchasing a dumpster bag. Time to start purging. 💜
I typed "hoe to stop being upset about your home" and this video came up first. Can I Say this!? AMAZING! I needed no more! I almost felt i was having an answer about my case exactly! I loved everything second of this video. I am up and running to get this house under control!
I cannot tell you how much this video means to me to the point I'm in happy tears. There are days when I feel like I will go out of my mind with clutter and have no idea where to begin with my day. It's so overwhelming at times. Thank you so much for your videos!
I think I've said this before in a previous video, but whenever my home or car is in disarray, its a total energy leak for me (which is no good). I function best when my spaces are clean and organized for the most part. As always, you have a profound way of breaking down what can feel like a daunting and overwhelming task into simple, more manageable pieces. Your content always brings me so much peace and a breath of fresh air. So grateful for your channels 🙏🏼✨
Kelsey, I seriously get almost paralyzed when I’m overwhelmed!! I have to truck my brain to convince myself it’s not as bad as it FEELS. Glad you can relate!!❤️❤️❤️
I was just whining to the husband that this house was full of so MUCH chaos and mess and that I was so Angry that all I wanted tonight was to watch a few You Tubes and now it was to late and blah blah blah. He responded which ONE are picking, is it Jen? And I immediately defused and appreciated that he knew me this well. And then you posted THIS. Perfect. Isn't it funny how sometimes you find exactly what you were looking for. Thank you for what you do.
I am exactly the same way with my mind being a mess when my house is. Love your video! I live in a condo and the recycling is not close so I let it build up, along with the garbage. When I take it all out, it makes me feel like I have much more peace.
Loved this video! We are like-minded, Jen. If I feel like my house is a mess, my anxiety goes way up. I have two little kids and a husband. The first thing I do is get all the beds made followed by assessing the garbage, dishes and laundry situation. If those things are under control, I feel so much better!
Thank you for this. I have Bipolar and when I am on depressive episodes, which can go as long as a year, my house doesn't get cleaned regularly (or at all). When I get out of the episode, I am overwhelmed by just the thought of catching up with the cleaning, that I can't even start cleaning and putting things back in order weeks after the depression is over. Then my mania kicks in and I'm still overwhelmed haha. Really, thank you.
It’s ok. It really is. It only needs to be clean enough that the baby doesn’t choke in something once they start crawling. Take care of yourself and that new little one!!!!!
Hello there I’ve just posted video because I’ve just read your comment and I had to reply immediately. Please please sweetheart do not worry about the state of your house. My baby who is now 21, is doing just fine! Unbeknownst to me at the time I was suffering from postnatal depression, and the health visitor was an absolute star with me, the only thing I knew how to do is take care of my little baby me the house my husband went to rack and ruin but miraculously I managed to keep my little baby fed cleaned and watered. But as my lovely health visitor pointed out she said that’s the most important thing caring for your baby everything else will come when it’s right. So my message to you is just keep looking after your baby and yourself and everything else will find its way I’m just saying I love to say “those that mind don’t matter, and those that matter don’t mind “!!! I really hope this has made sense and I really hope I’ve helped you in someway all my loving Nicola, God bless.
@@alexisrose4221 me too. I have a 6 year old and a 1 year old who honestly destroys everything! I feel so so overwhelmed all the time! My husband and I work full time and when we get home we just want to rest :( it’s a lot, and I totally understand how you feel
I have the same problem but I am the one addicted to amazon. I am overwhelmed with deliveries, Antibac cleaning said items and getting rid of the packaging. If you still have the same problem I suggest telling him babe order what you want but order once every 2 weeks or 10 days then all the parcels come on one day and packaging tidy up is easier. I was asked to so this so I know it works. And also it showed me how much I was ordering seeing 200$ in the basket instead of 20 times at only 10$ was a big shock on how much I was spending.
Definitely a messy home adds unneeded stress. I enjoyed hearing your tips and will definitely have to purge some of my clothes. My drawers are always stuffed making it difficult to put laundry away
Yeah, it took me awhile to figure that out but if there's no place to put the stuff, it's super tough to get motivated to put it away! Small change that reaps HUGE rewards!
THANK YOU!! Watching this, I realized that you just solved all of my problems. This is genius, but so logical. I have so much junk and way too many clothes. I am getting rid of the clothes by attrition. I have lost 52 pounds, so every time i lose a size or two ALL of the clothes in that size can be donated. This seems to be working really well. I have about 70 more pounds to go - then i can throw EVERYTHING out and get a small capsule wardrobe and become the minimalist i want to be. I threw 4 more things in the donate box today. Loved your video!! Those 2 things are going to change my life!!! Thank you so much!!
I am a nanny for 4 girls, triplets and an older sister(approx 18 months older. That level of chaos you described is how their house is! I definitely can create calmness from chaos! My three things are laundry, dishes, make beds
OMGsh! You spoke directly to my soul here. This describes exactly how I feel and what I’m going through. I have three boys, four including the hubby, and only one of my boys does his own laundry. He’s a gift of cleanliness by the way. But I do everyone else’s laundry and usually am not on top of it. I just can’t keep up with everyone. Clean clothes often stay in a laundry basket...lol. Thank you for these helpful hints and tips. ♥️
You're wonderful, exactly what Iam facing. In my late teens I was working in a company my supervisor was a German lady. She was a tough lady.I always remember one thing she told me.When she saw masses around me such as squeeze papers, empty drinking cans. She would say to me "Jimmy if you want to make mom happy just fix up the kitchen and keep things orderly" Iam always trying my best .
I totally agree with making sure you do not have too many clothes lol. I do a modified version of the FlyLady system. It really seems to be working for me. I do end up doing laundry almost daily - but that's just what works for me.
I did FlyLady years ago and loved it, Nicole! And yeah, laundry everyday was pretty normal when the boys were little and I was doing everybody's laundry.
I was looking for a helpful video to watch because I have been sick and did not know where to start. I am a mother of 3 kids in three years and you are talking exactly about my problem. Trash everywhere and dirty laundry. Still feeling sick with sinus headache but started to pick up trash and doing laundry. Hope my house will be clean in a few hours😍
Amen!!!!! Wasn't sure where you were going with this, but I agree 100% I found myself saying, yes, yes, yes, all the way through this video. Thanks Jen!!!
We live in a two story home and the laundry room is on the first floor. My game changer was when I bought a laundry hamper that stays in the laundry room. This makes it easy to corral the dirty socks my family leaves laying around, dirty dish towels, used gym clothes, etc that would never make it to the laundry baskets in their rooms upstairs.
At several points in this video I felt you *literally* speak to my soul.. these 2 things make so much sense and seem so much more manageable. Thank you so much!!!
I agree. Those are two things that are a constant problem. Thank you for reminding me. When I get overwhelmed and don't know where to start, from now on my first to places are garbage and laundry.💜
I am so overwhelmed and getting absolutely nowhere. I just finished a huge home remodel and trying to get the house ready to sell because I am moving out of state. This video gives me hope and more importantly a focus of where to begin when things get out of control.
Im a single mother of 2 boys and my apartment is pretty big and its always messy and im constantly cleaning and im a house keeper so im always stressed with getting things done but feel like i don't have enough time. You 2 main points will def help me . I will invest in abiggwr garbage becuase thats one thing i always seem to have too much. Thanks so much for the video . You have a new sub!!
I splurged and ordered the Elemis Advent box this year. It was definitely worth the money that I spent on it. I am having fun trying out the different products. My skin feels less dry and looks healthier now. Thank you for showing it on your channel. Have a Merry Christmas!
Yes, the overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start. Mine is definitely laundry....I've purged my closet twice and need to do it again but I don't have enough space for my clothes. And yes, I wear everything in there..Mine is also seasonal decor....it seems like the totes I have are not adequate.
I am 100% with you on this! I’m a do the laundry all in one swoop person - actually I have an empty laundry basket after doing towels and laundry this morning!
Ooh girl, thank you for this! I love watching your videos & getting inspired to organize! We recently got a small $2 laundry basket for our bedroom & it has been awesome to be able to say "it goes there" and do a check in every few days & remind the hubs to put it away or in laundry...and it doesn't make for 8 loads of laundry in the floor! 😁
I am disabled to begin with but my house has reached a level of such horrific mess that I can't even cope. I am so ashamed of myself. I found this video because I was trying to find a tutorial about using a shop vac for carpet cleaning and even then I was still overwhelmed with the whole thing because I can't see my carpets anyway I'm such a mess. You absolutely made a significant difference in my life tonight at 2:14am and I want to say thank you. My mom has tried to help me but it seems to make it worse. I suppose, you are the mom I needed to hear this from. As I'm resting tonight I'm feeling so much better and will be watching your videos. Thank you so much
I take pics of my mess. Then I tackle picture by picture. In between I compensate myself by watching a youtube video n sometime I also write them on a paper. After tackling one task I write it off from the paper. It gives me immense pleasure when they are all written off. Sometimes I fake being like OCD people n use water detergent n pretend n clean n clean. It works. This last one I do it while watching obsessive compulsive cleaners
Yes when my house is in chaos so am I so true I’m moody grouchy can’t think straight just in a bad mood over all when my house is disaster when it’s clean I am happy in a good mood can think straight I am glad I am watching this and others relate
Loved this video Jen, and perfect timing on a Sunday morning! You are so right about the bathroom trash can, ours can be filled in like 4 mins.... And yeah.... my husband does his own laundry too😉
I have a 33gallon garage can in the kitchen, and 8 gallons in the bathroom, office, bedroom and living room- and I live by myself! So I agree on proper garbage bins.
This was great. Thank you! Will be getting bigger trashcans ASAP. So true about laundry. I have 3 littles and one of the best things I have done is to put big baskets in the laundry room where clean clothes are sorted out of the dryer. Each person gets one and when it comes out it is tossed in there (unfolded) and it is their problem from that point on. Usually the kids just change clothes in the laundry room and throw the dirties in the washer which is run daily. Wash on cold and use color catchers so no sorting needed. I still hang my husband and my clothes so they don’t wrinkle, but it isn’t an issue with the kids. The trick is not to have too many clothes!
"I still hang my husband and my clothes so they don't wrinkle," Hahaha! I knew what you really meant, but I can't get the picture out of my head of a man with a clothes hanger stuffed in the back of his shirt hanging in a closet beside his wife's clothes which are all crammed together now. Thanks for the laugh and I hope your husband is staying wrinkle free!
Finally !! I'm 26 with 3 boys and a man and im the only girl and I literally go insane cleaning everyday and keep things in place . There only a year n year and a half apart and there still young but Jeeze I get overwhelmed so quickly
I am also someone who gets very stressed out and anxious when things are a mess and cluttered in my home and especially when I can’t find things. I grew up in a house like that and it was just not pleasant. I want a more peaceful and calm home for my kids and also I want to be a better mom for my kids (bc I know I’m not at my best when I’m stressed and therefore impatient and snappy with my kids). For me, I’ve found simplifying and decluttering has really been the game changer. Keeping up on laundry is easier with fewer clothes (and really, the kids and I wear the same favorites, we just had a lot of extras that took up space). Laundry just seems easier to keep up on when I know there’s space and breathing room in the closets and drawers. Cleaning up toys is easier and playing is easier when there are fewer toys. It doesn’t even have to be minimal, just fewer so they fit well. And again, they play with the same favorites so the others just end up making things cluttered and crammed. Simplifying my paper files means putting away papers is faster so I actually do it instead of leaving piles around. Again, doesn’t have to be minimal, but whenever something isn’t working, it’s usually bc it’s just not simple and quick enough for me to keep up on it.
Yes, exactly, Becca! Fewer things to keep track of absolutely lends itself to a more peaceful environment. And I totally hear you on the chaos growing up - my mom was very tidy but there was a lot of clutter and with my anxiety issues I do much better with fewer things!
Wow! I was hoping for your answer but not counting on it because it is not a recent video. The Oncology dept. offered me the services of a therapist, and we work on my procrastination and hoarding problems. I appreciate her help but feels she is not experiencing the problems. I watched your video before going to work and I was supercharged today because of you!!! By the way you have no idea (I think?) how much that précise video can be helpful. I have been following you more of less since the pandemic. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jen for your honesty. Marie-France from Montreal 💜👋
We have literally the smallest bathroom in existence, so we also have a small trash can, so I totally relate. Laundry, yes! Mark Alan always keeps up with laundry.
Thank you for this video. With everyone working from home, and five kids homeschooling during this pandemic, our house is crazy! It’s never been crazy before either. To make matters worse, there is so much snow on the ground that I’m loathe to take garbage out. Our garbage cans are in the alleyway, and there are massive snowdrifts everywhere. It’s so stupid but it’s an impediment to getting things thrown away quickly.
Well, I don't think it's stupid but it is probably causing a lot of frustration! Hang in there! You're doing a really good job - far better than you're probably giving yourself credit for.
Twice a week laundry has been a game changer at our house, especially for our preference to have a smaller wardrobe and kids who love to rewear favorites constantly. I always make sure towels are the last load in case I'm out of energy to complete the whole cycle. 😜 I love the trash can advice. Our trouble spot is the girls' bedroom where paper and crafting supplies tend to migrate... Despite having a different spot in the house for that. I can either fight their tendencies or embrace and empower it. So buying a trash can for their room is my next purchase!
We line dry in Ireland and my washing machine is in the kitchen, a yard away drom the back door, which is near the line. I don't use a basket at all. I hang clothes out to dry immediately, tumble dry them at the end so they're bone dry, put them on the couch in the living room and fold them right away. I haven't got a utility room, so I have to be really strict.
Hey Jen... full marks on this vlog! The wife and I ordered a new trash can for our bathroom. Specifically we got a slightly larger one with a swinging lid so we don't have to look at the rubbish. Obvious, and a simple fix. We had also recently fallen off the fold and hang your laundry wagon. The wagon is no fun, but we do feel better when the closet is tidy and the laundry room can be navigated. So, we adulted and are now current with the wash. Enjoyed the insights, and I completely get the calming effect an organized home provides. Thanks and take care.
It's so easy to get behind on all the things, Heather, seriously. And HURRAY on the new trash can! I really found it made a surprising difference for us - such a small but significant change!
I only do laundry one day a week. My mother, grandmother, and I have always been this way. My daughter does her laundry weekly due to her utility company restrictions. Also, think about it. Does your garbage company pick up trash every day? I don't think so. For me I have 5 things: make beds, wash dishes, plan meals, pick up clutter, plan meals, and round up laundry.
WOW! This was the first video I've seen on your channel. This makes so much sense! I know the channel is geared towards women and mom's, but I'm a stay at home dad with 7 kids. 4 of them are little ones. Thank you so much for posting this 2 years ago. I wish I would have seen it sooner 😂
My channel is geared towards whomever needs it and James sounds like you've got a full and busy home! So glad your'e here and that you liked the video.
I've been watching you for awhile now, and this popped up as a suggested video for me. It was just what I needed. I have had a huge trash can in my bathroom for years, so I feel ahead of the game there.😅 But laundry and clothes are my downfall and I feel utterly overwhelmed by it constantly. I will be taking your advice though! Thank you!❤
These aren't the problems in my house, sorry to say. I do a load of laundry a day and take the trash out pretty much daily. Despite this, and every piece of clothing in this house is clean, my mess is on all the flat surfaces. I'm so tired of it. Books that won't fit on the bookshelves, groceries that need to go to the pantry, etc. I'm so tired of it all and it is so depressing. I so agree that how the house looks directly affects how I feel about the house.
