Its sad that in our country people have to do fund raisers when they get cancer because our medical system is so expensive and profit based. Really sad stuff.

I’m sorry to hear this. Unfortunately he doesn’t have life insurance with living benefits (critical, chronic and terminal illness). It’s sad we protect everything around us but ourselves.

This one brought tears to my eyes. As a cancer survivor myself, I was once in a similar predicament. Just one of the medications I was on cost $15,000 each dose. Multiple that by 18 doses. Thank goodness I had insurance but our out of pocket costs were still huge and we were barely scraping by. I recommend they go talk to the hospital and see if they have any grants they can apply for to help reduce their medical bills. We did that ourselves and it was a blessing.

This is medical debt. Selling everything just to survive. Obviously the advice is needed for the system we work with. But medical debt shouldn’t no-fault debt.

I went through this and my husband died. Cancer touches everything, the earth shook under my feet and the money is gone, the house, is gone, he is gone, then the transmission went out on the car. But its alright now.

My husband also has cancer and between the doctors and my prescriptions we are in the same predicament as this caller. We are both 74 years old so we can't go out to work either because of medical issues. We feel like we are at the end of our rope also. Our prayers go out to them. Any suggestions Dave to help us?

This is so common, its heartbreaking. Just lost my father in law and they faced the same problem, almost drained them completely dry after working their whole lives to do right. Only to die with not much left and my mother in law so sad and almost broke, she followed him to heaven shortly after. Stay strong Marcia, dont give up on life and try to find happiness in simple things like gardening or pets. Sending prayers your way.

@Karma is Real Yes. In a "single payer" system, the government taxes the people. Those taxes take many forms, that include: Income taxes on the productive. Estate taxes on those that die. Taxes on those that successfully invest. Taxes on those that own property. Even taxes on those who choose not to own something, such as health insurance. The government becomes the single payer using someone else's money.

I'm going to pray for you, however I will NOT support a change in our healthcare system that will keep this disaster from ever happening to you in the first place. This is why I've become jaded on religion :( I love day he always takes against "socialist" programs that would totally solve this issue. So don't pretend like this is upsetting to here.

@@JAB2010 Nobody wants to hear that. It would challenge their narrow worldview. "Socialized medicine has death panels who decide who lives and dies." So does our capitalist healthcare system! They decide who gets transplant organs based on who has the best chance of surviving. If you have other illnesses or don't seem to be a good risk due to addiction or other behaviors, you won't get one, and you'll eventually die. Insurance companies deny authorizations for MRIs and CT scans. We already have all these problems, except we're the only dummies in the developed world who pay out the nose for the privilege.
