150" 4K HDR Dolby Vision + Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos.
Cramming maximum functionality into the smallest possible size is my jam. I've been trying to get my hands on one of these for a long time now and this device has been everything I'd hoped for and more.
I wasn't paid or sponsored to make this video - just given one.
Is $2999 within my budget for a TV? Definitely not. Would I recommend this over a similarly priced TV? For a compact, minimalist, versatile, cinema experience - 100%.

I understand it's a sponsored product, that's why I usually try to avoid these kind of video's for information. Things worth mentioning for people thinking about a UST projector: - The bigger the screen size the less bright it gets, specified lumens often (not mentioned as ANSI as well) are less than advertised - To be even comparable with a TV at the same price point you really need to get an ALR (ambient light reflective) screen, another $1000-1500 extra to add probably more if you really want to go the full 150' Also if having a big rectangular shape in the room is an issue you'd need to have a even more expansive 'hidden' roll screen as well. - Have an option to easily darken the room for the best quality, dark walls making it even better. - Try to avoid keystone, this will decrease imagine quality so it's best to set it up in a fixed position, most TV furniture is not very well prepared for this which could lead having a gap between the furniture and the wall, or have to get a sliding mechanism to set the projector if you want the 100'+ sizes - 'just put in a suitcase and take it with you' I really don't think these kind of projectors are meant for this kind of 'abuse' unless you get a specific suitcase with cut out foam. Also every time you get back home you have to align it again. There are specific models made for this purpose but of course these will have less of an image quality at the same price point. Furthermore if you really think about it, how often are there suitable locations when travelling to display a 100' or bigger screen? And if so what are the chances of it being perfectly smooth wall, because the slightest uneven surface will be very visual with a UST projector, So besides the extra projector suitcase you also have to take an foldable screen with you as well going places. Like I said there is definitely a good user case for these projectors, I myself are still in doubt to go big or go quality that's why I did a little research and came up with these points.

"most TV furniture is not very well prepared for this which could lead having a gap between the furniture and the wall, or have to get a sliding mechanism to set the projector if you want the 100'+ sizes" - Exactly this. The only thing that stops from getting it. It's short - throw but still not short enough, to get 120" that my regular projector has, I need to move the stand significantly away from the wall.

Point 1 is not true (perhaps results vary from the top tier brand vs cheap no-name brands), I can NEVER tell brightness level difference on my 4k laser tv. I have tried pushing it right up against the wall for small picture vs a 120inch, and it's negligible in visibility differences (especially during day time with ambient lights shining into the room). As long as ANSI Lumens is being advertised you won't get ripped off. Point 2 is also redundant as 1st your eyes adjust you don't need the TV's high brightness once you're used to a wall projection. 2nd, most people would be working during the day and watching tv in the afternoon-evening and projector brightness is definitely watchable. ALR is not necessary and a simple decision to go without IF you are prioritising minimalism which OP definitely is. Point 3 valid Point 4 valid Point 5 depends on the occasion, it's worth the transportation and re-setup if like OP doesn't have a fixed ALR screen to re-align. But yes, not damaging the glass lense cover is monumentally important.

So we’re trading the black rectangle with a grey one. It’s really not ideal to watch without a projector screen. I tried it for a month without then again with a screen and it was a night and day difference. There are retractable projectors screens out there that can achieve that sweet minimalist look. Though they’re really very expensive and don’t come in bigger sizes.
@elisterr

You can purchase a rising screen for that. During the "OFF" time it is behind the cabinet. If you start the projector, the screen will raise itself by itself.

I've had this projector for a couple months now and I love it! I use it with a 100" screen. The speakers are good enough that unless you're using surround sound, there's no point in buying a sound bar. That saves you some money right off the bat and this thing already can't be beat for the price!

So… I guess one of the issues is that you need a properly painted white wall or screen to have a good image. Some of the issues you mentioned that there are with TV’s have kind of been solved with one that I bought recently - the Samsung Frame. It’s a gorgeous minimalist TV and it also is matte. I’m in an apartment now that has huge windows and have had no issues with watching it during the day. Also, when it’s “off”, it displays artwork of your choosing. I guess the only issue is it can’t get bigger or smaller.

@antonburdin9756 Год назад
@@techknow9237 , yes, the technology is evolving constantly. It is true for both TV’s and projectors. Buying thin TV as Samsung Frame I did not expect good sound quality at all - I was fully prepared to invest in some audio equipment. But it turned to be surprisingly good - I decided to skip sound bar for the setup. Don’t get me wrong - you can get much better sound quality with dedicated speakers for different channels in a purposefully prepared space. But in a living room with large windows, variety of uses and all the design considerations - it is probably not worth the effort. Projectors are great if the space is not too bright (the darker the better) and you need a huge screen (over 80 inches). If the space is dark but you could leave with a smaller diagonal - OLED TVs could generally provide better value. However, the particular room is very bright and LCD panel at this size should be better solution. All projectors capable of producing similar picture quality and brightness are much more expensive.

I complain agree with you on short throw projectors being a designer’s dream. Once my TV finally died last year, my wife and I finally agreed it was time to replace it with a projector. We do most of our intentional screen time during the evenings so we’re able to have that theater style experience at home. And not having a black rectangle the focal point of the room is wonderful. We opted for a white Optoma projector and it sits on our credenza along side some family photos, vintage cameras, books and record player. One thing I’d like to see from companies is teaming up with Sonos so that I can pair my surround speakers that flank our couch - you just can replicate that in my opinion.

Prefacing this by saying I think projectors are SUPER cool. The problem with projectors(other than the cost, heat output, fan noise, and extreme power consumption) is that they preform best in rooms with dark or black walls. And at their worst in rooms with white walls. Reflected light from white walls in the room really degrades the picture quality. And I've heard it's not a problem with laser projectors, but I find the flickering colors when you move your head very distracting. I'd rather pay 1/10th of the price for a better image quality TV and just cover it when not in use, or use a screensaver.
@Shift4g
@Shift4g Год назад
You can't really beat the size though, and I always minimized how big of difference it could be until I got a projector. I've repeatedly found now that people start caring less about the quality differences of a panel vs projector once they've tasted the increase in immersion.

Daniel, what could be spectacular would be to make a TV cabinet with a recessed slot (with a sliding closure?) to insert such a projector so it would disappear from view, except when in use where you would just have to slide the closure to project. IMO Samsung’s The Frame is the best compromise because you can trade that Big Black Rectangle for something more akin to an art frame on the wall, and not have to suffer any of the drawbacks of a projector. Even for as good as they have gotten, there’s too many conditions they have to meet to get ideal picture quality.

IMO, projectors are a premium price for the lowest picture quality you can buy. A big OLED has a perfect image, isn’t that heavy, and if a black rectangle bothers you, you can have it display artwork or photos of your family when you’re not using it.

Daniel, I would be interested to see your opinion around Samsung’s 2022 Frame TV. It has a matte finish to avoid reflections and is bright enough for daytime use as well. It avoids the black rectangle effect by using art mode with a motion sensor so that it’s not on when you’re not in the room. In this video you had to shrink the image down which takes away one of the main advantages of projectors over TVs. To get your money’s worth out of any UST, your really have to pair it up with a UST specific ambient light rejection screen which defeats the purpose of the interior design aspect of using a UST.

I don't have a TV exactly for most of the reasons stated in the beginning (e.ghaving a black rectangle as centerpiece of the room) and I did try out several projectors already. I was really excited to hear some thoughts on their biggest downsides - lack of brightness and contrast unless the room is fairly dark. Imagine how surpirsed I was to hear the thought that this is the problem of the TVs, implying that projectors solve this problem. I understand this is a sponsored video but still it is nice to be more objective... Projectors are also expensive and if you happen to have a nice big window nearby (like I do) are not fun to watch in daylight. A TV is always miles miles better. I would say projectors are pretty much unwatchable in daylight (if you are used to a nice phone screen and a nice PC monitor). Also they still require a screen and one thing that not many ppl mention (unless they have had one) are how most of them are really noisy and dissipate a lot of heat. On the flip side, a big + for me, which often gets overlooked is that they do not shine light directly in your eyes the way typical screens do, which is quite nice for us sitting 8hrs a day in front of PC for our jobs. Of course, the light still gets reflected (otherwise we wouldn't see it :D) but the strain is not the same.

Nothing like HECH D R amirite? Nice concise and well presented projector review/sponsor showcase . I'd rather put a wall mounted tv with a picture frame in front that can swing down below or above on an arm than have to settle with the horrible blacks of a projector during the day.

I am jealous. I keep going back and forth between the ForMovie and a 83" oled. The ALR CLR screen at 120" is really expensive, and to get 120" on an 8 foot wall you need it on low furniture and a good distance from the wall. There are a lot of drawbacks, but buying a 120" TV is not an option. and a normal projector would not work well in my setup.
@Shift4g
@Shift4g Год назад
The only thing to do is trial it. Get the projector and see how it does in your existing environment, checking to see if optimizing it further would be worth your interest (getting lower furniture, screen, etc). If it doesn't wow you or you don't see the potential of it, then send it back and get the 83", and never look back.

I was able to do this. This projector (my first) replaced a 77" G1 in my "theater room". I wouldn't trade either. The OLED is clearly better at being an OLED, but all of that just dissolves when you are sitting in front of 130". It's like comparing a sedan to an SUV imo. Their individual strengths make them even, just in different ways.

@@Shift4g Projectors are ideally used in dedicated home theatre rooms. Ideally with no windows, black walls and ceilings, projector screen, etc. gets the most out of the projector. However they are a poor choice for a bright living room like shown in this video. An OLED or the Samsung Frame TV is a far better option for a living room.

I can vouch for OLED for personal use and small rooms. But I’m on Daniel’s side about not having a giant black rectangle dominate the main living space.

Fine of you don't care much for quality or are a casual user. You need a screen with a UST and not exactly ideal for gaming with input lag

You NEED an ALR screen for this which will have a bigger footprint than a TV. The Formovie is currently the best in the market, but it cannot be used on walls.

Any paid endorsement is a very slanted and biased review. Just a few insights. Projector Central did not rate this projector hit number one. Read the review. It did mention some concerns. The projector takes a minimum of 40 to 45 minutes to warm up before you can focus it. The for movie projector uses a.47. DLP chip instead of the .66 DLP chip that is used in the better and Even after warming up the projector is not as sharp and clear as other projectors using the larger DLP chip. This projector must be calibrated in order to get a good picture. Which decreases its brightness by over 40%. The projector can only be used in a room with very minimal light. Even at those times the picture will be somewhat faded or washed out. The projector works best in a light controlled environment. There are televisions that have anti-glare technology reducing or eliminating all glare There are cabinets designed to house motorized ALR screens

We already have a minimum of 2 boxes, actually we have 3. What’s one more. Australia has the NBN, pay TV courtesy of our Telco and some other device only my husband knows how to use. They will need to market their product a little differently in Australia or get 2 suitcases. The black screen (which nobody likes) will live to see another day.

I see what you mean about the big black square on your wall and I don’t really like that myself, but with a projector, isn’t there just a big empty white wall instead? I feel a tv at least indicate a function to the room and a bare wall looks se incomplete and unsatisfying. I know it’s a preference, but that big empty wall is really the biggest reason why I don’t buy a projector.
