It’s innocent and sweet. … but then you realise that this is sung by a siren who’s trying to lure a sailor to his death, and suddenly him “not roaming anymore” takes on a much darker and more eerie meaning…

Imagine a Disney Ariel who sang like this. Then Ursula takes the golden voice...

Serious Plot Twist: The mermaids actually learned this song by listening every night to the singing of the lighthouse keeper's widow, Maria. She flung herself from the rocky cliffs at Mermaid's Cove after receiving news that her husband William had drowned at sea while sailing home from the War of Spanish Succession, and that's why the lighthouse is abandoned by the time of Pirates Of The Carribbean 4.

This feels like it would fit in a horror movie about an abusive sailor's wife drowning in the sea and before dying, her rage and vengance has formed an oath that promise torment and agony, her oath became reality and she became a beautiful siren with a voice as hypnotising as the Seraph's lullaby. Now, she sang this song everytime a new boat come across, and with each time the song stop, another body is placed in the bottom of the blue abyss. I read a tumblr post about how magically creatures never really went extinct they just mates with humans and sometimes people show the different species within them through their talents. If that is true then you are decedent from the sirens

I want this specific cover to be played at my wedding. Not even kidding, After hearing this, I had a chance to go sail for the first time in my life with my future husband... Due to PTSD I did not touch the sea water for 6 years, but I went in the water and sang to him this song meaning every word. I don't know what is it in your voice, but it touched my heart more than any other cover. And I'm an old fashion person, I really loved the low-voice original mermaid singing... But you, I can't stop listening, crying a bit. I relate with almost every word. I just wanted you to know, You may have saved some ppl from drowning in another, much more darker sea, just by singing with all your soul out dancing with the background music. Thank u so much.

I really have a feeling that the words she is singing have no meaning to her whatsoever. She doesn't care about him, she just wants to take him for her own. The reason she sings such sad and thoughtful lyrics is simply another ruse to lure in said jolly sailor. For example, when she says, "I pray the day to come that, he's never more to roam". This isn't her wanting him to not sail anymore, this is her wanting to take him overboard and drown him, as she did with many other "jolly sailors". Oh also, I'm pretty sure that some cultures say that the sirens are attracted to gold and it is sometimes used to trap the creatures. This could be why she says that she disdains all glittering gold. While she is attracted to it, it is a possible death sentence. And in the song, a warning to the sailors that it could be the only way to escape her. Thank you guys for hearing my theory, just thought I'd put out my thoughts. Decipher this how you will.

I've listened to this song probably 50+ times by now and just now realized the line "I disdain all glittering gold" could be referring to his wedding ring, the siren is in love with the sailor and wants her to himself so it makes sense that she doesn't like seeing proof of the sailor and maria's love for eachother

It’s perfect innocence in the midst of utter monstrosity. Behind those wide, fathomless eyes lies a starving creature, cursed to forever be hungry, to never know peace of mind. And so they’re forever singing, to eat the flesh of sailor men, mournful but resigned.

Maria’s parents threaten to cast her off if she doesn’t change her mind. Maria does not care. Maria runs away. Maria’s father tracks her down, telling her he’s received word that her sailor’s ship has miscarried, all crew dead. Maria’s father lies. Maria’s love returns for her, but he is too late. Maria has walked into the sea.

I keep listening to this especially on anxious days, it calms me so much, I love it.

Maria fell in love with a sailor and he used her, but she still held out hope that he will return and fulfill his promises; but we all know he never will. Her parents turned their backs on her and she had no money, so she sacrificed herself to the sea. And now, will the full power and rage of the sea, she can exact revenge upon her 'jolly' sailor.
