Hi Sara I recently just submitted my first notebook. I have never had an account before. I was very excited..I made sure all my work was not copyrighted and all that stuff. This was my FIRST submission. Then one day I got an email saying i am having account terminated as I breached terms and conditions. I have multiple accounts. I felt so confused as I definitely don’t. They didn’t listen when I told them multiple times I haven’t. I feel angry. They told me they have made final choice and want no further correspondence. As a newbie I feel treated badly 😞 x

@@lubelleillustration8725 Wow! That’s wild. I’ve never heard that could happen upon a first submission of a book. Did they tell you why exactly? If you can figure out the reason, you can usually get yourself unstuck. But regardless, I’m SO sorry that happened to you!! That’s insanely frustrating, but hopefully it can get worked out one way or another. But at the very least, thankfully you’re still new, so you could create a new account with a different email and continue on, now knowing your mistake so you won’t make it again. :)

@@SarahLarson yeh they didn’t give me any insight. They told me they are removing all my books. I only had a notebook. They refused to go further and treated me like I am lying to them. I haven’t found anyone who has been treated like I have on first submission, they told me not to message anymore. I have do not have any other accounts. This is truly my first submission and everything. I have no previous experience or correspondence that would help me make sense of any of this. Thanks for making this video as at least I am not the only one who has been treated unfairly. Maybe not kinders fault, maybe there’s been a mix up in the system. I do wish there was a number to call. I don’t want it to be the end…when it was just the beginning of my journey.

@@lubelleillustration8725 Dang, that’s insane. Yeah, I’d recommend just starting fresh with a new email. Read all the guidelines carefully, and then start to upload new books. It’s almost better that it was your first submission-you were able to learn a painful lesson but really only lost one book. :) So don’t let this discourage you!!

Thank you so much for this video! All your videos have been super helpful to me, but one of the biggest things holding me back was my fear of accidentally violating a guideline and getting my KDP suspended or taken down. The lines between what might be a copywrite issue and not can be quite blurry (Lookin at you CANVA 👀) so now that I have actually seen this process happen, the possibility feels a lot less scary and I know how to handle it now if it dose ever happen. It will not be the end of the world, and I doubt most of us are doing some serious copyright infringement on purpose anyways lol! Thank you Sarah! 😄

My KDP account was deleted today. No warning, no reason stated. Just that I've violated something. Barely had two notebooks published and ordered for myself. It's a little funny how I have in my email a notice of termination and right after that email about my order being shipped.

That's so frustrating to hear, ughhh! At least you were still just starting, but that's so irritating. Do they tell you what you violated? Assuming it wasn't a trademark thing, maybe it was a duplicate content thing, or perhaps it was an error on KDP's part (happens sometimes). I don't have any experience beyond a suspension, but I know account terminations can also be recovered from. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help! Make sure you email them back and say you believe the termination was in error, and also ask for more info about what you did wrong. Hopefully that can get the ball rolling. Either way, wishing you all the best! 💛

♥ The fact you understood the mistake and you are being transparent with us (your viewers), I massively appreciate it. Even so, I am very sorry your account went through the wringer as it is something I would never wish on anyone. I do have peace of mind after seeing your video. Also, you never know about the success of your new planner version. Thinking a positive outcome is better than expecting/admitting the defeat before it has a chance to emerge. . . . . . Back in April, I was starting my KDP journey, I did receive an email similar to this about one of my notebooks. I took action immediately and in the end, everything was fine. I do believe it was a double mix-up as I thought it would be cool to make a "series" for the notebook, but as that is "frowned upon" for low-content books, I removed the series and I fervently read through the guidelines before every upload. (Canva's especially.)

@@stephaniedalportofantasy Don’t create a series for low content books! They’re not really linked in any way, and it’s also against the rules, so steer clear of that. Only for novels and such. :)

This happened to me this morning. They want me to unpublish the book, but Amazon made the paperback "unavailable". So I can't even unpublish if I wanted to. Imagine that. Have you ever heard of this?

I'm so glad to hear that! And honestly, I'm not sure! I imagine it can vary depending on the situation. From what it sounds like to me, I'd say they're probably much less forgiving the second time around.

thank you very much for your video! i had the same problem with one of my books. A notebook with blank lined pages , i was named it with the word "lovebook" because it was for the valentine's day....And a company claimed the rights , a company on internet that had the brand name "lovebook"...and amazon send me the same e-mail. The book of course was and is still blocked. Thankfully my account thought was not suspended. Who would imagine that such a simple word it could be a problem. It needs to having very good search for a title....From that day i was completely disapointed and i do not publish a lot of books..You never know when someon will claim the rights from nowhere!!.. My account is still on truck, but the sales are very low....That was my story and thanks to your video and you i had the chance to share it with you and your audience! Keep safe and strong. I suppose that just goes to show that if you try to create your own branding, you've got to do a thorough Internet search first! My account got taken down completely for unjust reasons and they could care less I’m done with KDP .. They allow horrible content on their platform from people that aren’t even spelling titles correctly or infringing upon others and those are all up for sale yet I made a RU-vid content creator which isn’t the only one listed on Amazon KDP and they completely shut me down.

Oh wow, I’m really sorry to hear about that. 😬 I’ve heard their customer service can be the worst sometimes, and it’s unfortunate that there’s so little quality control. Was this the same reason I had the issue with my account? Did they really terminate you when they let me off with a warning? It really seems like there’s no consistency, and it’s such a pain for those who wind up on the wrong side of the coin for no other reason than coincidence. 🤷‍♀️

@@SarahLarson that’s the issue I was trying to address with them, yes same thing. I know ultimately the trademark and copyright is on us but no warning for me and first time I unintentionally broke the rules by using RU-vid in my title. It’s unfortunate. Be careful and just take heed and really read the fine print. I went out of my lane and paid the price. I was just getting more sales too .. totally bummed. By the way, what really makes me sad is I don’t have copies of all the notebooks and journals I created.. I had only 300 but there were a few repetitive sellers. I was going to get author copies of some friends for Xmas.. lol that’s not happening now. Good luck, good work and great videos!

Hi Sarah, very helpful video (I'm new to this!). When you say you publish with multiple different cover designs, do you just change the imagery, or do you have to give each book a different title?

So glad it could help you!! As for my different cover designs, I try to make them each as unique as possible, and I stick to doing it more with my lower-content books (like composition books), where the interior is less important. I'll always change the imagery, but sometimes I'll tweak the titles as well and use different keywords to maximize my reach! Hope that answers your question. to be honest, amazon process of termination of an account still considered generous in my opinion, they still give you warning instead of direct suspend such as google dev account,paypal, or other online services. thanks for being honest with this study case. i wish you good luck your future submission

It’s so important to research every title in the US Trademark search engine before launching it. I stay away from all copyrighted and trademark items. You can use RU-vid as a keyword in ads. That’s the way around it.

Yes, honestly! I'll be doing a lot more research from here on out. I'm not sure about in keywords, though, just because KDP says not to include trademarked/copyrighted terms in metadata, and keywords are considered metadata. I'll have to look more into that!

I want to make some low content notebooks with quotes and create a line with different patterns but same content layout. Is that ok or do I need to create different titles if I list them individually? Is there a way to offer them on one listing with color options? If so how do I do that? That might make a good video since I can’t find any.

Great question, Robin! So as for what you're looking to do, there's unfortunately no way to do that through KDP. As a regular Amazon seller, you could, but that makes things much more complicated. Unless KDP changes things (and I hope they do!), your best bets may be to use A+ Content to draw attention to other books within your collection, maybe mention them in your book's descriptions, use QR codes to direct your customers to your author page, or even do your own external marketing to group them together and provide links to each individually. And as for the line of books itself, you'll have to create and publish them individually, but I love the idea!! That sounds awesome! Sorry you can't do it quite the way you were hoping for, but I'm sure it'll still turn out great. :)

So is it ok to put the symbols RU-vid, Instagram, Twitter etc in your book?

Nope! To be honest, they may be safer within the interior rather than on the cover, but it’s still technically against the rules and could get you the same result it got me. Wouldn’t recommend! Avoid symbols and names, and instead be generic. If you can, give your customers the ability to fill in the names of the social media platforms they use so that you don’t have to. :)

I got this for a princess composition notebook I made. I don't understand what I actually did wrong since the image was licensed through Canva. I thought any image taken from Canva had sufficient rights to be republished so we I'm confused.

Dang, that's frustrating. If all your images came from Canva, then there shouldn't be any issue. As long as it's not, like, a Princess Anna composition book or anything! However, I imagine that would've been much more obvious. KDP is known to make mistakes, so if you can't figure out why, try contacting them to see if they can provide you with more detailed information or at least own up to their error.

I think I'd avoid it, sadly. 😬 But there are tons of books out there on how to succeed on RU-vid and things like that, so there's got to be some sort of rule or gray area there that might work!

I know you have other non-RU-vid book titles that had trademarks in them. You covered them in previous videos. @@SarahLarson You are very welcome! I work as a software engineer (NOT an Amazon employee), and I am pretty sure that they run random scans for different Trademark phrases. This would be why they don't notify of all the issues at once. The struggle is real with these Trademarks. I have a set of low-content books where there is a trademark pending. Even though I published my books first, I will have to pull them if their trademark request goes through. They are my best-selling low-content too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, I’m not proud to admit I got a little cocky with that book, but I’ll admit it nonetheless. 😂 After all, it was one of my favorite creations and I decided I was willing to take the risk, but it caught up to me! I’m glad that this is how I learned my lesson and it wasn’t the worst in the world, and now I’ll be much more careful knowing things like this can happen, even when a bunch of other books are violating the same rule. :)
