My homeschooler struggled w/ math facts & wasn't into worksheet drills! I got creative & made it fun for her!
Why do we even need to drill math facts? Our kids need to be quick. The harder the math gets, the more time it takes. So they don't want to be taking extra time still counting on their fingers!
This video is full fun ways you drill those basic base 10, adding, and subtracting, multiplying and diving math drills! When kids feel like they are playing games and having fun, how could it be school, right? They're not learning! They're playing a game! Not every homeschool math curriculum prompts you to drill the math facts, so sometimes we have to intentionally make sure this is a part of our daily homeschool routine. Here's how this homeschool mom does it!

Yesss! I have been really loving your videos. My son is learning how to borrow from the 10s for subtraction. He gets the concept but it’s so hard to do because he doesn’t know the facts. It’s like pulling teeth to get him to practice/count. I bought the foam 10 frames and both sets of flash cards for my kids (got them through your links!). I’m going to use your motivation idea with sugar free chocolate chips since we’re trying to limit sugar. I think that’ll give my son the motivation he needs to power through! Thank you!

Another great video! Thank you so much for sharing all these ideas and resources! My son is "count on your fingers" kiddo and am going to implement some of these to try to help him with that. I had purchased times tales for him hoping that would help with his multiplication facts and he totally disliked it and couldn't relate to that teaching method. He does love music and songs so the memory cycles you talk about with classical conversation interests me. Which cycle would you recommend for a 3rd-4th grader? History songs is a plus! I really appreciate all of your hints and tips! PS...watching you do those math facts was amazing!!!
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 года назад
For the classical conversations memory work- cycle 1 is ancient history, cycle 2 is Medieval through modern world history, and cycle 3 is American history. So whichever interests you the most. Like I said, math is always the same. Thank you!! I love figuring the math puzzles out!

We are new homeschoolers- finishing second year and we went with Saxon and my daughter who is now in 4th grade cried and became so overwhelmed by the times sheets. We stopped the timing and it helped. Unfortunately in public school grade 1 and 2 she was not learning addition/sub facts and I wouldn't know until the report card at the end of the year telling me she was below level :( We did Saxon 3 for our first year and then moved into TGTB 4 Math and I can honestly say huge improvement over the last two years- she knows her addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts!!! She still hates math but she has the skills to do it. My youngest has been home since the middle of K and has used and excelled at Saxon- we just don't do the timed math. It was a learning experience for sure bringing them home- my son who is now 13 is super gifted reading chapter books by K and can do Algebra 1 in his head (me I need paper lol) so my middle was the first one that struggled. Thank you for all these ideas for summer practice math fact and reading are my only summer requirements.

I was drilled in math facts in Singapore math thru the workbooks but it sounds like it’s changed. Singapore math prompted me to use an abacus for multiplication. I’ve told my daughter to try it and she said it was too young for her yet she’s still working on multiplication. Those form things look awesome!!! We are hoping that the classical conversations app helps with multiplication, and it’s looking like it’s getting there!!! We are also finding the science memory is helping us as well!!!

You’re welcome! And there have been many years where I’ve taken a few weeks OFF of the curriculum to just concentrate on math drills. Because if they don’t have those facts down, it slows them down. So if you have to just focus on math facts, don’t feel guilty. That foundation is important and if solid, will pay you back in dividends!

Hi Rachel!:) We've been homeschooling for 15 years. four of our five children have graduated college, or are finishing college currently. But, our baby, the twelve year old, is a challenge. I feel like we're not moving forward, and every angle I try seems like it's not a good fit, so then I become the crazy mom constantly trying new things, and then feel like we're not moving forward because we're always starting over. He would much rather hurry though school to try and play a video game when all school and chores are done. Just really struggling. Since he's the youngest, and our children are spread out in age, it's like having an only child when it comes to homeschooling. It's a whole new ball game, and I feel lost! The co-op near us in West Central Indiana is not a good fit, so we're just praying for some direction.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan

I’m so sorry you’re struggling. I feel your pain as I have similar difficulty with my middle child. She’s just not super enthusiastic about anything. So I try to find the things that she will engage in and enjoy. For example, she might not be enthusiastic about an art project. But I know once we start one, she’ll join in. What kind of twist can I put on it to make it more enjoyable for her. It’s tough. And it can’t always be fun and games. There’s a balance between doing what needs to be done, and looking for that thing that makes each child tick. If he likes video games, have you looked into some sort of programming class? Scratch programming is a place where many start. Or what about learning how to create a website? Robotics?? Praying for direction is a good idea! I always say, “God, you created this child and you know how she ticks. Please help me provide for her what she needs and please help her to learn responsibility and open her mind to new ideas.” 😉

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Thank you so much for your advice, and a programming class is a great idea! I'm going to keep praying for direction, and The Lord's guidance. I'm planning on starting over with history in January as that is a struggle for sure. I'd love your input on a history curriculum for sixth/seventh grade.

@@BengeFamily98 I don’t use a history curriculum. I use read alouds, historical fiction movies and documentaries to learn history from. I find that often sparks curiosity that may trigger more digging. History is hard to retain if a child isn’t truly interested. I didn’t learn much about history until I was an adult bc I had no interest until then. We use Compass Classroom for high school, although they say you could start that in Jr high. You may have to tailor it a bit bc it’s a lot of work. I did a video about it here: COMPASS CLASSROOM AMERICAN HISTORY thorough review w/LOTs of details!! I am looking at math and trying to figure out why I would need to buy a PK, K or even 1st grade math curriculum such as Singapore. In fact, I am wondering if we would be able to wait for 3rd Grade to start Teaching Textbooks, while only using only games and apps like the ones you show here. Am I deluding myself, or do you see a reason to use a formal math curriculum for the early ages?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 года назад
I don’t know. I guess if you start with adding, subtracting and make sure you get to skip counting for multiplication maybe? I will say my youngest one whizzed through much of the math so she was in level 3 math in 2nd grade. There are concepts such as measuring and weight also taught in those lower grades. But I don’t know……it’s an intriguing thought!! I mean….the pioneers didn’t have formal math curriculums! 😜
