A proper Biffa build must always contain the following: - Completely flattened land - Copy-pasted housing blocks - Trees planted in straight lines - Traffic lights? What are traffic lights? - Everything must be fully-framed with road - Services? What are services? - A healthy neglect for trash collection and mail routes - Roundabouts right at the freeway exit - Jobs? What are jobs? - Utilities stretched to their absolute limit - Traffic chokepoints for entire neighbourhoods - Powerlines? What are powerlines? - Cul-de-sac for days - Auto-save caffeination

@@automation7295 Agreed, especially when that area grows. It might have started small, but that layout has "inner city," written all over it. I expect some timed traffic lights will start to appear at some point. Now if he really wants to make it realistically UK, we'll end up with timed traffic lights on motorway-intersection roundabouts. Nothing says "British junction" more than a massive roundabout with 6 or more exits and traffic lights blocking the flow both on and around the roundabout!

The carpark near the school - where you have the disabled spots is the furthest distance to walk - maybe a short path from where they are to the path you put in would work. Also maybe a pedestrian bridge over the river so that not everyone has to drive or get the bus. I'd really love to see your take on a much more hilly area! Every time you flatten things out I get a bit disappointed since I live in the West Country, spent a lot of time in Bristol and Bath. Those are sooo hilly for dense residential areas. Maybe it's too difficult to deal with in cities skylines, but every time you've mentioned that a road is too steep I've always just thought that wow, that's nothing compared to what I have to deal with here in Bristol
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 года назад
I agree. One of the options for the university campus is pretty hilly, so let's hope he chooses that one and gets creative with it. I think the problem is mostly that he likes to build templates and copy/change them and that approach is kind of difficult with uneven terrain as he found out with his terrace houses. Although I think the problem were the trees and he could make it work if he places props like that later.

Unfortunately, Cities Skylines don't work too good with hilly areas, especially if buildings have big area under it( It sometimes flattens the area around the building and often make very unnatural slopes and pavements. So, I think it will be a really hard manual labor for Biffa to make hilly city look good enough.

hi biffa, have you noticed that almost all of your neighborhoods are cul de sacs? i think they should have at least two entrances so neighborhoods can connet to main roads and each other. that would probably ease the traffic and help with public transit routes in the future.
@edewaal97
@edewaal97 2 года назад
That's the main problem with the traffic and Biffa. Almost always it comes down to giving people more options on how to drive. There should be another road to the river, one connecting under the highway and one under or to the old highway ramp.
@clnetrooper
@clnetrooper 2 года назад
I think you're looking at the problem the wrong way. Before giving more road options, increasing walkability or bikability would be much better. For example the whole neighbors that just got built would immensely benefit from one of the residential blocs being replaced by shops. Maybe replacing one by offices too after looking at that industry demand. That way, cims won't have to travel far to work or shop and so less traffic. Then some public transportation to get people to their work places is the icing on the cake.
@Xenon0000000000001
@Xenon0000000000001 2 года назад
@@edewaal97 In real life in the UK, they actively reduce connections in residential areas to try and keep traffic to specific main roads. There's loads of streets where the end has been blocked to stop any through traffic and there's often a very limited number of entrances to housing estates. Even in the industrial estate where my office is located there's only a single road in, and the road out the back is for buses only (with automated bollards). Basically, any realistic UK city should have terrible traffic.

Request/Suggestion: Somewhere in this build, could a castle or a manor house be built somewhere for historical purposes. Love the new Georgian quarter. I was thinking the whole time that it needs more access points, then you started further expanding and got another. Nice. I still think that you could connect it to the road at the Woald. Also maybe a bridge near the high school and some pedestrian bridges near the station? I'm a bit sad that the game called that park a botanical garden but you didn't place one. And yes, services and public transport will be sorely needed. If you want to reach the next size goal quickly, you should probably use some more flats (mid and high rises) but I like those old-timey quarters. Also the RICO mod is fantastic. That means you can repurpose pretty much any building that you like to the type you need and think it got converted to. Is it possible to mix types? I mean in old houses it was pretty common to have a shop or artesan on the ground level and flats on the upper floors. Some often used by the owner and employees and the rest rented out. Or the whole thing was rented out to different people. Edit: Also I think you mixed up East and West.

There is one major reason its better irl to have the roundabout elevated above the motorway. It means that the hill aids acceleration (especially for lorries) when joining and getting to motorway speed and conversely when leaving the motorway the hill aids in deceleration before hitting the roundabout. It is usually also more visible from the motorway if there is queueing traffic at the roundabout to allow drivers to better anticipate braking.

Similar to this you could create an area where you start off creating a square area with exits north, east, south, and west. Copy the square to use it to create one or two different looking small hamlets. Then copy those hamlets and rotate them to make the outside 8 squares of a 3x3 with the middle square having all of your utilities and the old market and shops etc. For spacing, you might want to design the center square first to get the size right. Call the area Tennis Town, after the biscuits.

I think you could fit one or 2 discounter like Aldi near the highway access. And spread a few offices in corners when planning new districts. This helps keeps the traffic down.

At 26:51, you deleted the roads to redraw them so they would make a junction instead of clipping over the old ones. You can use the Network Multitool for that.

with the mill area i would add a small amount of terraces - not as much as on the other part of the city, as the Victorian workers would have been houses next to the mill. Some of these would have been demolished as part of urban redevelopment over the years, however some of them would likely remain. Potentially you could do something like Blist Hill/Black Country Living Museum/Beamish and maybe make that area like a small heratige museam and put a trollybusy/tram system around it, but try and get an old school asset to go on it

When you drive onto a motorway in the UK usually the speed limit on the slip road is the same speed limit as the motorway you're about to join so 70MPH, it makes sense to slow them down as they come off the motorway but as you join you want to be speeding up so your speed matches the speed your joining. Just a thought. 🚗👍

Yes, I've noticed that. Even on the exit slip roads the speed limit will be the same as the motorway until you get near to the end of it.

Entering and exiting highways at the highway speed is important for good flow in real life. The amount of times I see people slow down is nuts.

Really enjoying this detailing series. I appreciate that each section's style is explained and the reasoning for each piece is there, since looking at other detailing videos, it's often just sort of a timelapse or a finished product. Good balance between that and Donoteat01's level of explanation.

my favorite new way of flattening areas is to use the Airport district making tool, it does it so quickly and efficiently! :P

I'm looking forward to adding more city services and transit! The one thing this lovely neighborhood is missing (to me) is a couple shops for groceries and stuff. I bet you could use mods to convert some of the building to commercial or office without having to change to look/vision of the place. Also, I cannot imagine how little parking is in this build! But maybe that's me being used to America. I wouldn't want to have to find parking here though 😂

there's one vanilla building and two gatehouse buildings on the workshop, you can use those as an entrance in the central jardin/garden area in the center of those blocks.

Loving this series of British theme @Biffaplaysindiegames . Have you considered trying to recreate a real life location in the City Skylines world? Would love to see you try and take on the Newcastle Gateshead area. Maybe you could give our planners some ideas on how to solve our real world traffic issues! We have Metro, Busses, Nice big river and bridges, residential commercial and industrial all in close proximity.

Just copying real world roads/builds etc just doesn't appeal to me. Taking inspiration and then letting my own creativity flow appeals much more :-)
@robertgreen7999

@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines That makes sense. As seen from the last couple of series your creative mind is far better than our town planners anyway lol. The area is good for inspiration as there is lots of different styles in a small area especially if you can get onto some historical maps as well. The Tyne Bridge would be an iconic mod for any city if someone in the workshop wants to do one ha ha.

Quite a lot of Georgian terraces will surround a green area. Brighton is a good example with the green area in the middle, flanked by roads and the houses on the outside looking down on the square

In older areas (especially in bigger cities) there’s often a mixture of the older/ original houses and random more 1950’s /1960’s houses. Some of the original houses were bombed in the ww2 and the gaps were filled in years afterwards . Maybe in the Georgian area it would be good to have a few random ones mixed in to make it more realistic?

May I suggest a couple of tea-themed names for your Georgian neighborhood? *Teafalgar Gardens* after Trafalgar Square. *Brewsbury* after Bloomsbury, a famous Georgian area in London, and in keeping with East and West Kettling.

Something that is common in industrial mill city's is trams, look at Manchester and Sheffield for example. This would be a good way to reduce traffic in the new areas

Hey Biffa, looking good. Saw something on a CPP video recently that gave me an idea for you. Phil used a zoneable walking path which made me think you might be able to make a decent pedestrianised high street somewhere in Blightea. Enjoy your few (well deserved) days off with your family. Take it easy.

Since that high school looks a bit posh, it should have a fancy swoopy drive way up to the front steps. And the extra space between the main road and the school that creates should be a fancy campus green/pathways. Also to help with water, you can add a water tpwer to the mill area, a lot of large factories have their own water storage.

If you do another British inspired city in CS2 you could see if you can put mews houses behind the Georgian/Edwardian terraces. In the case of places like Pimlico have them be rectangular blocks with the townhouses back to back but private and public green spaces peppered throughout.
@dr_jacko

You should open up the large central block and have a park inside there. You could remove one of the houses at the side as an entrance.
