Ugh! Thank God I am not the only AM who is keeping their options on the table lol I love the job but it’s honestly not what I love doing. I’m yet again inspired by you. Thank you for the videos!

It's very methodical and every shift is Groundhog Day; my partner did it for 4 months in 2019 before moving to another company. Still, I am always on the fence about applying for it, the benefits are enticing lol
@ObeyTati0986
@ObeyTati0986 3 года назад
@@charlesswitzer8378 yes, for sure. i enjoy the benefits a lot, they are very rewarding (in a way) but it’s getting draining and tiring to repeatedly work your butt off for 10-12 four shifts a week and deal with a bunch of ppl who don’t want to actually work lol or dealing with unrealistic expectations from counterparts. that’s been my experience thus far and i’m 6 months in. i wouldnt say it’s all bad, tho. just has its ups and downs like most jobs. i’m just brutally honest lol

For remote work, I would recommend not working in your bedroom or any other space that is associated with "break/chill" time. It could make it VERY hard to concentrate. Work in an area that is only associated with work. If you don't have an extra room for a temp home office, you can get a room divider from ikea and put it in your living room. Hope that helps! And CONGRATS!!
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад

Congrats! I appreciate your input when i was prepping for my pa interview. Waiting for my offer lol but got my incline the next day after my interview. Hopefully ill be in a similar situation where i transition to working Amazon Studios as a Game producer with my animation background. I take being an AM as a good starting point to build those leadership skills and apply it to other roles in Amazon
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
That’s a very good perspective to have, keep that in the back of your mind during your time as an AM, continue to build your connections, and I’m sure you’ll be able to transition to a cool role like that

Bro you literally are my spirit animal!! Im really interested in software engineering or data science !!! And hope I can transition within Amazon as well!!! Any tips on how to perform the lateral movement from management to STEM field like you did ! Also for work at home tips , I’d suggest sticking to a schedule . Have a set time you wake up every day eat etc it’s easier to follow a schedule . Light music/media for entertainment is also good !! And have moments when you step away from your desk for 10 minutes or 15
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 2 года назад
To switch from operations to the STEM field the first thing I suggest doing is looking at the latest internal transfer policy to see what the requirements are that you must satisfy before you can apply to new internal roles. I remember when I started you had to be in your role for 90 days before you could apply to new roles again. I also suggest networking with people involved in the various roles that you are interested in so that you can get a feel for if people like those roles, what the team culture is in that sector of the business, etc. Also, you would need to make sure you meet the qualifications for the roles you are interested in. There are a ton of roles so I am sure that you would be successful in switching to what you want

Congratulations on your promotion and new role. Just asked in comments of another one of your videos, about how long we should sign a lease for when moving to a new area. Sounds like I may be better off with a 6 month lease. Just got my offer letter on Friday and they want me to be in another state in just 21 days to start work. Excited and challenged right off the bat, before I even start. Looks like I'm in for a crazy ride.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
Thank you Michael - as for signing a lease in a new area, I would go with a minimum of 12 months. Occasionally new hires will do a short term assignment at a different building than their main facility and that’s the only time you’d need short-term housing. You should be good with 12 months, most people are physically relocating before then from my experience

Remote work is great but it depends on the type. I do freelance writing so I have no set daily schedule---it's whatever as long as I meet my client's deadlines. The main pitfalls for me are procrastination and distractions, so I only keep open my writing tabs when I am writing. If you have a set schedule with a company---it's really not much different---your job takes place in your living room instead lol I have heard being promoted within Amazon is fairly easy---granted you have skills and background in a position. Congrats Grant!

Some tips i found useful for remote work was to pretend i was leaving the house to go to work. Same morning routine, hair and makeup, outfit, coffee, and then going into my office. I wouldn't work in the bed or on the couch because it made me want to go back to bed or watch tv and not work lol.

@@Grant0669 Thanks so much. I found out a couple weeks back. I’m currently an L4 AM, do you know if you need to be an L5 to switch over to corporate? Or can you switch over once you get an L5 promotion?
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 3 года назад
@@Sam-mw8co You have a few options when it comes to switching to a role that is corporate. Once you have been employed with Amazon for a certain number of days (I would check the number on one of the internal websites) you are able to apply to other roles across the company. As I am sure you saw, in the internal tool you are able to see the level of each position. If you apply to another position that is at the L4 level and received and accepted an offer, this would be considered a lateral transfer. So in short, you could do a lateral transfer as a 4, or you could wait until you promo to a 5 through Operations, and then make the switch to a 5 corporate role

Hi, I am new to your channel as I just got offered the role of a graduate area manager. I am also a safety engineer as I studied chemical engineering for school. I am nervous and wondering is it worth it? Should I leave my current job and take a step back in the engineering direction and go with Amazon and move forward to engineering again? Would love the advice.
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 2 года назад
That is great, congratulations! You raise a very good question and it is one that is difficult to answer. If I were in your position, the way I would go about deciding this would be to think about: 1. The progress I have made in my career so far, and how much of a "reset" starting at a new company would be. 2. How happy I am with my current role and trajectory, and how comfortable I am risking this at a new company. 3. How set on being an engineer I am. If you are already very deep into your career as an engineer (let's say 5+ years) and would be starting as an Area Manager, I do not know that I would be going after the Area Manager role - perhaps something more aligned with the experience you have. If you are happy at your current company, that also has value, but if you are uneasy with where you are and are willing to take the risk to start over somewhere else, I think that is very exciting and worth doing. And finally in regards to being set on being an engineer, I think that if you moved to Amazon you would be exposed to a lot of different career paths and you may find that operations/engineering/corporate roles whatever else you discover interests you. That is the end of my essay. Hopefully it helps in some way!

Hey, I am a current L5 area manager at Amazon and I am curious about how the transition was from operations to corporate ?
@Grant0669
@Grant0669 2 года назад
Hi Zack - this is a fantastic question, and I plan to make a video on this soon. Operations and corporate are very different in many regards, so there definitely was a period of transition where I had to recalibrate the way I work and interact with people. Operations was very team-oriented; I worked extremely closely with my AM peers, and then was leading the associates within my department. On the corporate side in my currently role, I do not have any direct reports, but I do work closely with my peers. There is a lot to be said about this - overall the transition was very smooth and I have enjoyed every day of it!

Hi my name is Kevin. I am soon going to be graduating college in December and I am a warehouse associate at Amazon. Already in the talks with my Area Manager of what it would take and my interest in the position as an Area Manager. I work at a small vender flex facility, so nothing big. It is just me and my PA during off-season peak and that is it. I was wondering without getting into too many details for confidentiality purposes. How much free time does an Area Manager get depending upon location? I see that you are on site a lot. Where my area manager lives in Illinois overseeing Indiana and Ohio, working remotely. I was planning on wanting to work remotely and also travel to sites when needed, as an Area Manager. After seeing your videos, I feel that this may not be the case for every Area Manager. If you have Discord or Instagram, I would be happy to connect more about this if you are open to it. Thank you.

@Grant0669 3 года назад
Hello - first of all congratulations on the upcoming graduation, especially since you have been attending school in conjunction with work. When it comes to free-time, I believe this varies depending on the facility, individual, time of year, and shift. I do not like to give blanket statements about this simply because there is so much variation. I do not know of any Area Managers who are fully remote, but that is only because as an AM I was working at an FC.
