THIS IS A LIGHT HEARTED VIDEO! If you’re getting offended by it i’m sorry but that is you’re problem, just take it as a joke. 3. While it is in a joking manner, all of the sentiments in this video are true to my opinion. I was never trying to be constructive i just made a video of moments i don’t like because i thought it would be funny, and it is funny to me which is why i posted it. for me.
Hannah Grayson theater and songs you hear on the radio are not going to sound the same there’s different sounds that project better on a stage which is the reason singers have to belt a certain way or pronounce things certain ways. None of these examples sounded bad they only aren’t what people who only listen to regular radio music are used to
@@defsouul3127 I am someone who listens to musical theatre more often than I do to pop music. And I still think these sounded bad. They were pitchy and sharp and yes i understand the technique excuse can be applied to some but like,,,,they still didn't sound great. So yeah.
I think Barrett’s problem is that she didn’t have proper technique while singing heathers so I think she’s prematurely damaged her voice which sucks cuz she had such an amazing voice but she just didn’t use it right
Okay, these aren't necessarily a reflection of the singer's abilities, but sometimes the composer's. Some of these songs just have super nasty vowels on super difficult notes that anyone would have an aneurysm trying to sing it properly.
Yeah all the puppets sound nasally (is that the right word for it?) in the musical. It's the whole point of it, they're meant to be like Kermit the Frog-y.
@@dnacat5062 Kate also specificially has the high pitched voice. The second lady who belted sounded great, she kept the voice with her belt, but it sounded like she might've had to lower the note a little
The only one I'll really defend is Stephanie D'Abruzzo on Fine Fine Line...she's voicing a muppet-esque character, and she's clearly putting on a voice for Kate, rather than using her full, actual voice. The other girls belt it wonderfully, but they're using their full voices and it kind of..distracts from the puppet.
@Daniel M. I didn't say it's not taxing. I didn't even imply it. I was in the sphere of saving your voice doesn't make the best belts that can be done. For obvious reasons. If you're restricting your voice, you aren't doing the most you can. The most usually sounds better, but yes; it will ruin your voice. That's a choice singers have to make. And I never frowned upon saving it. I said pointing it out doesn't make it sound better.

The wasn’t anything bad about Christina’s vowel change. I’ve watched multiple vocal coaches reacting to her say that she is one of the only Anastasias to belt the note safely and correctly.
yeah that's just like... how you sing. I agree with the first half of the sentiments in this video but after that most of the complaints were about things that were either fine or actually really good
I think it works cause as Elphaba points out later in the musical, he's unhappy, everything is an act. So to me it makes sense that if you search for it, he sounds (and looks) a bit empty inside. Thats just my opinion lol, no hate intended on yours 😊
everytime I see Buzzfeed or some other shitty site include it in a 'great musical movies' alongside the golden era movie musicals I want to burst the writers ear drums because they aren't using them right.
that's how I'm feeling about the latest mean girls movie and if you've seen it you might agree. I like some of the songs, but a lot of them are just not good counterparts to the musical songs. But I think it's a good movie, the casting is good and I really like the non singing parts.
OH MY GOD SOMEONE WHO FINALLY AGREES WITH ME ON LA LA LAND the score and choreography are absolutely beautiful, perfect in my opinion. but the singing... girl. it's like it was a 2 in a room full of 10s.
I appreciate that Damien Chazzelle wanted to try something new but a musical needs SINGERS. Not actors who took singing lessons for 6 months before shooting smh 🤦
A note for other viewers... In defense of most of these vocalists, they're making smart choices for the sake of preserving their voices. Vowel modification is normal and often necessary for healthy belts, that "weird head voice thing" is just twang, how tf else is a male supposed to hit a female soprano note without using falsetto, vibrato at the end of a sustained belt is normal and a sign that the singer is using the healthiest technique possible, etc.. Most of these are all just issues that come down to listener preference, not evidence of bad vocals.
yeah like???? at least kate monsters original actress was like a professional child's puppeteer. she's able to create this rlly convincing character of cate monster that doesn't have to dissipate for the actress to show off.
In Barrett's defense her vocal chords went through it after Heathers. I congratulate her for being able to even hit those notes. Edit: Since people are complaining, if you damage your vocal chords 3 years ago (let’s say 2017) they’re still gonna be damaged today. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, you’re going to permanently be effected. Second, if the vowels sounded like ‘Be me than be with you’ that would just sound.. wrong. Instead of ‘Bay may than bay with you.’ Barrett’s vocal chords *did* go through it after Heathers, you can look up a comparison video of her singing right here on RU-vid if you don’t believe me. Also before I get that one comment, I’m not saying that the creator of the video is wrong as this is their opinion (it’s pretty obvious by the title). I just wanted to add my input.

actors in musical theater have to push through illnesses to sing numbers that go outside their vocal ranges, bad technique can certainly lead to injury but so can sheer vocal load in those with great technique, i’ve even heard of voices giving way after a particularly aggressive sneeze
there is a lot more vocal chord injury in broadway and the music industry in general than we ever hear about because they blame themselves for bad technique

Seriously why was he even cast, what a huge smack in the face for his probably totally qualified swings, understudies, and the make ensemble members that would have learned his part in case and for the qualified male chorus🙄 like they went from Kyle To HIM? And Erika and Kyle had such good chemistry too. Renee and Erika carries the show when he was on it

I'd Rather be Me has a D5 in it, which shows that the B4's are still within her range. Paradoxically, it may actually be harder for her to sing 'not that high' notes like B4 if they sit at an awkward transition zone in her voice. I suspect that the issue is that the B4s are sung staccato in a row, and the B4 is close to a passeggio , which would make it harder to sing than one D5

I think her vibrato at the end is honestly pretty lovely! I think this video fails to remember that a lot of the choices in vocals go back to playing a character. Lily James had kind of a dreaminess to her voice, which makes sense when playing Donna.
Like try fucking doing it for a show and singing that part. It’s not easy not at all. There’s so much direction to it. The music for legally blonde is so good and hitting those high notes and holding those notes is so so so so difficult like we do not criticise legally blonde not now not ever

Elim Kwok I heard a wonderful lady sing that song on the UK leg of the Avenue Q tour and she used a muppet esque voice but when she (Cecily Jane) did the end belt it was just incredible

Jmo okay bro honestly I wasn’t going to reply but I’m getting mad so idk. what would it matter if i could or could not sing all of these songs perfectly? would you tell me i can’t dislike a movie unless i am actively a director? it’s not about thinking ‘i can do this better’ it’s about ‘i didn’t enjoy this’. this video was just some person making a compilation of vocal moments that bothered them. it wasn’t an attack, it wasn’t a critique, literally just someone saying ‘i personally don’t like these moments’ which is a perfectly acceptable thing to do. fyi i never pull this out but i do actually have years of vocal experience including broadway. So yeah some, not all of the notes were a bit off, which is perfectly fine because it’s live music, that’s what makes it live and real and not a studio recording, but the notes are still a bit out and it’s OKAY for that to bother someone! and honestly i don’t even agree with some of the moments that made this list. im just tired of musical theatre fans attacking someone for not liking a particular moment just because they worship the ground a performer walks on. it’s cliquey and i hope that everyone matures enough to be able to accept other people’s opinions and be able to listen even if they don’t agree. We’re all just people who like music who want to share the passion even if it’s revolving around a dislike. i’m sorry if i came across as rude or anything like that, i would actually be happy to share what i think bothered this person in this particular moments that people don’t seem to be noticing
0:27 okay first of all, try singing it as a female alto/mezzo soprano. It’s actually really difficult. That’s also why she had to change the vowels a little bit, also because it would’ve sounded WAY worse if she pronounced the vowels normally
i liked the one from waitress because it’s so clearly a jazz harmony that’s happening, it’s not supposed to sound “correct” it always sounds weird at first but it’s so pretty if you listen to it without just paying attention to one part
nothing is wrong it just sounds/feels a little off. i dont think the issue was improper technique, simply just the way it sounds and is composed. the last belt in "in my dreams" is personally my least favorite belt to a) listen to b) perform.

Okay cmon if you actually do a lot of theatrical singing it is so unhealthy to pronounce it as actually DAYYY instead of something like da-eh. Or MEEE instead of may. Especially when you’re belting. It causes so much extra strain and damages the chords and causes restriction that makes it harder to belt. I agree with some of the stuff on this list but anything about vowels is so unfair that’s just healthy singing
well that’s not like fully true. vowel modifying doesn’t always have to be done for everyone. like, it’s a technique that works well when it needs to be done. and while it is easier to strain if you don’t modify your vowels, it’s not necessarily always healthier. for instance, as long as i use good breath support and keep space in my mouth, i can sing the end of rather be me without modifying and without strain. there’s so much to it besides the vowel itself. it’s rlly fascinating how many moving parts you have to keep in mind to have good technique.
Thank you for pointing out about La La Land. I literally feel like the vocalist sound like they're singing from the corridor outside the booth, it's so muted and lacklustre. Not their fault, just a production choice but still...

sharksandsheep I low key get why they chose actors with so so vocals. It’s because they wanted it to be more of a romance and not a musical. So when the actors are ok singers it becomes more lovable as a romance/ “ sun drenched experience” . The whole sun thing is there words not mine.
I think great comet sounded pinched and nasal but otherwise the vocals were great. I personally don’t really like Mamma Mia and I do think her vibrato technique is weird compared to others.
So I know ur getting attacked and stuff and you’re definitely allowed to have your own opinion. But the way you phrased a lot of these made it feel like you were just kind of hating for no reason instead of giving actual criticism. I’m not really a musical theatre person so I’m not upset by this video but I’m just trying to explain why others are!!
um, vibrato is good. You're supposed to do it to have consistent air and be able to sing longer notes and sustain them for longer. Straight tone is what hurts vocalist because you strain yourself to do it and you're not moving any air.
Waving through a window has vibrato written all over it. I appreciated more this song when ramin sang his version but there was not much vibrato in the ohhh part which i found weird.
that wasn’t very good vibrato. it was kind of forced and too fast, not very controlled. probly helped her sing, but honestly if you don’t have a gift for vibrato it’s harder to sing with it than without it
The lord Algorithm hath lead me here and I have this to say: I interpreted Anatole’s extreme(ly unnecessary) high pitched notes to be a part of his character. Anatole is a major drama queen, to the point that he constantly sings as LOUD as possible to be the centre of attention. I mean just look at when he bitchily left the show! I think the “BURG” of “FOR PETERSBURG” is still rattling around in my skull years later.
Exactly! TGC does this a lot, you can tell a character's personality by their voice, like Sonya being so soft and almost mumbling, it's a part of their character. Great Comet is more of an abstract artistical show rather than a standard Broadway musical.

for the kocked up intervals, you are correct that they dont sound right. Theyre dissonant intervals, meaning they really dont sound pretty, but theyre meant to be resolved into "prettier" chords.

Her vowels are literally perfect too like in order to keep the integrity of the note you have to modify the vowels so you don't one hurt your voice and two so it actually sounds correct. Anyway she did it perfectly

The thing is, opinions are totally fine, if the person doesn't like it and says so, who cares? But stating something like 'that harmony is off' or 'someone is pitchy' is just a totally different thing, because they definitely weren't off, but meant to sound that way. It's just a difference between saying what you like about something, and what you don't like and saying something that just isn't true 😅 Anyways though, I get why the person found some of these to be bad moments. Even though the vowel changes do have their purpose, they do sound ridiculous if it's so obvious like in I'd rather be me. 🤷🏼♀️

The point of La La Land's opening number is that they're all supposed to be basically singing to themselves while stuck in traffic. It's not just laziness, you can tell it was a style choice.
La la land was an ode to golden era Hollywood musical films not an attempt at musical theatre. Those films often went for softer numbers as did La la land. It was a choice for the vocals to be softer and more real (I.e. closer to dialogue) in an attempt to immerse you farther rather than having the songs belted which would put you in a música theatre mindset (I.e. wanting you belief suspended). It was a choice and I love it for that very reason.
Bro thats so not true. Old Hollywood movies still had bold strong confident singing. Literally look at guys and dolls. Its like they didnt know how to actually create balance and just went quiet. The whole movie was a poorly done attempt to recreate old Hollywood films and is even more insulting when you look at the dance numbers from that perspective. They fall flat compared to what they did in old movies. Triple threat was REAL back then
