Talk about remote locations! You will not find this restaurant in any guidebook (maybe because of the risky journey you need to make across a wobbly suspension bridge to get there), but it has to be one of the best sightseeing spots for autumn leaves and the freshest fish you’ll eat in Japan. This is the most off the beaten track location we’ve visited in Japan yet! Don’t let the Dangerous journey put you off, though. This restaurant is a hidden gem that you’ll want to add to your Japan bucket list!

Deep in the forests of Nakatsugawa in Gifu, Japan, you will find イワナの里 はざま (“Iwana no Sato Hazama”, Char Trout Village Gorge), which we can only described as Japan’s most secluded and off the beaten path sashimi (raw fish) restaurant. The restaurant is not only remote, but dangerous to reach as the suspension bridge that leads to it can only handle 3 people at one time! But if you can make it safely across the beautiful river below, you will be treated to one of Japan’s most unique dining experiences.
Iwana no Sato specializes in Iwana (a type of trout called “char”), which are caught fresh and sustainably from the adjacent river, and are served not one, but 3 different ways! A special Hazama set meal (峡定食) will cost you ¥2,200 (around $20) and includes salt grilled char rock fish (岩魚の塩焼き), sashimi (raw) char (岩魚のお造り), and sweet simmered char (甘露煮) along with seasonal wild mountain vegetables (山菜), rice, soba noodles, miso soup, AND dessert! But they are limited to 30 a day (did we mention that the fish dishes are sustainable?), so you need to arrive early if you want to try this special meal for yourself as keen customers begin flooding in (as much as the suspension bridge can handle) well before the restaurant first opens its doors at 11AM!
Not far from this magical and traditional Japanese riverside restaurant, you’ll find 付知峡 (“Tsukechi-kyo”, Tsukechi Gorge), known for its spectacularly turquoise water, springy suspension bridges, hiking trails, and stunning waterfalls. Even more beautiful, though is the autumn foliage surrounding the falls! If you want to experience Japan’s famous koyo (autumn leaf viewing) season, be sure to add this “must-see” location to your Japan travel plans!
