Visiting The Most Remote Village In Mainland Britain | Knoydart

I visited the most remote village in mainland Britain. Located on a peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, the village of Inverie on the Knoydart Peninsula is known for its isolation.
There are no roads connecting Inverie to the rest of Scotland. The only way to reach this village is by hiking approximately 15 miles through the last wilderness of Britain or by taking a boat across 7 miles of sea. In the last video, I shared my experience of hiking in Knoydart to reach Inverie, one of the UK's most remote villages.
In this video, I explore this remote Scottish village which is community-owned by the Knoydart Foundation. I end my time in Inverie by visiting the Old Forge Pub, the most remote pub in the UK!

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

A bonus 24-minute video walk-through of Inverie is available to watch over on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/ruthaisling On Patreon, I tend to share early access to the videos before they are posted here on RU-vid. I also share longer and uncut versions of some of my videos and occasional bonus videos! I usually film videos 4-6 weeks in advance but on Patreon you'll know what projects I'm working on weeks before I share the videos here on RU-vid. You'll also get access to my Scotland Google Map which has 200+ pins of places I've visited and recommend in Scotland. However you’d like to support the channel, whether through Patreon or by watching and subscribing on RU-vid, I’d like to thank you for supporting my work! ❤

@@mrneutral8423well perhaps you should know the history of Tasmania, this is perhaps the first island that genocide was comitted against an entire indigenous population to make it uninhabited until Australians began occupying it . 180,000 people were murdered for this to take place . It's a beautiful island but the Australian government has created a historical memorial for this island

I have the same issues with my kneecaps. Have you had surgery? I’ve had two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee & did help for a while. I’m 71 now & have to get one knee replacement soon. I love to go on nature trails but, like you, can’t go too far. We have amazing trails here in western Washington & all the mountain hikes! Even a couple of rain forests, particularly the Hoh Rain Forest. This is near Forks which is more than just Twilight! 😅 I’m going to Edinburgh in December so hoping to find a tame trail or two.

In 2018, I flew to Inverness and stayed in the village of Beauly. It was part of my research for a children’s storybook I wrote, about an eight-year-old boy called Westie who takes the train from Beauly and has different adventures. Beauly is famous for having the shortest platform in the UK. In 2021, I self-published the book. 😊

There are two things we will always fight for: our own people and our land. That brief story of Knoydart very well sums it up and it might look like a "small fight" in the grand scheme of things but it also sums up what being human is and our fighting spirit. I live in a very far away country but I hope someday I can visit this land.

Great video. Been to Knoydart twice, both times stayed on the campsite at Inverie. First time was in a heatwave, the second time was last October, waking up to the sounds of stags bellowing, the waves and oystercatchers calling. And late enough in the year to avoid the midges! Magic place. Hiked up sgurr coire chonnichean, the corbett that you see behind the campsite as well. The old forge has had a major upgrade as well, sometime last year. They didn't serve food before that, lots of venison dishes as expected, all absolutely superb.

I've subscribed to many a you tube channel over the years but since I stumbled across your channel a few months ago I have to say this has to be right up there amongst the best I've seen. Fantastic videos, wonderful voice overs, magical scenery. How you do all that you do on your own is unbelievable, mind boggling. My grandfather was a scot and I've been to Scotland numerous times man and boy, the area I know best is around Oban on the west coast as he built a house on the side of Loch Etive, and we used to visit twice a year in the seventies eighties and nineties. I don't go up as often as I'd like to these days because I live on the south coast of England, but Scotland will always be in my soul and your videos are reminders of what a wonderful place Scotland is. Again Ruth It’s a really lovely vlog. The views are stunning. It’s so good you review accommodation and the community amenities too in all its forms. The weather for your visit seemed beautiful. The history you give about the area is so interesting and enhances you travelling adventures perfectly. Thank You Ruth

Just caught up with this video after watching your Kinloch Hourn to Barrisdale video. This has taken me back to my first Knoydart visit, way back in May 1979 - boat from Mallaig via Inverie to the head of Loch Nevis, and several days staying in the former outdoor centre there, trying to bag some Munros. Although it was May, it was very wintry, snowflakes the size of saucers when we landed, and sadly lots of dead deer because of the unseasonal snow and cold. A hike over to Inverie and back, no Old Forge pub then unfortunately. But a tremendous expedition nevertheless, culminating in a massive hike back to Mallaig via Loch Morar. Great to find all these memories stimulated by your video, Ruth.

This isn't the first of your videos I've watched, but my first comment. I'll keep it short - incredible! I'm American, but have been fortunate to live and travel extensively in Scotland. However, many of your videos, including this one, provide insights well beyond my experiences. Thank you!

Thanks Ruth, I was in Inverie in April 97, canoed across from the adventure centre on Loch Nevis. Then hiked there via Sgurr Na Ciche a few days later, the weather was a little less clement!!

Never been there, but it reminds me so much of where I grew up...the island of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada. Pop. of only 600,000.

I remember visiting Mallaig and speaking to one of the girls at the harbour, she pilots a boat from Mallaig harbour, not sure if it is fishing or sea tours, but, she did say, the only way to the most remote pub in Scotland is by boat or by foot. I was kind of bewildered at this fact and now you have shown me the truth to it all. Apologies to the bonnie lass who told me facts. I thought to myself, there must be a road, surely there must be. I must vist now, on my next time on holiday back in Scotland, hopefully! Thanks for sharing, what a wonderful place.
