My Life in Appalachia 1 

Finally! Somebody on RU-vid not trying to be something they ain't. I absolutely love everything about these videos. The honesty, the sincerity, the home-spun knowledge, just hearing somebody that talks the way that I do is almost more than I could ever ask for. As an old man with granddaughters of my own, I especially love seeing them pretty young-uns telling stories and just being kids. The world needs more of this. Please keep them coming. Love you, mean it.

This is the way my grandmother would cook before my grandfather went to milk the cows at 4 am, I loved waking up early to get breakfast with him before he left. This is also the way I cook for my boys. Making food from scratch is so much more rewarding. Using your hands for growing food, canning, knitting, sewing, or praying are all useful task. As a young mom (28 this year) that Homeschools, these are skills I want to pass on to my sons. Getting back to the basics, I loved it!

I'm 59 years old and I can remember my Grandmother, lived like this. She cooked a big breakfast, canned food from her garden and she owned chickens. Both my Parents worked full-time, so I stayed with my Grandmother until I started the first grade. I have so many nice memories of her. She taught me many things. I like this laid-back life-style.

the way the house smells after cooking good like that is one of those treasures money cannot buy.

my granpaw ate a breakfast like that every day lived to be 89 and loved every day of it .

What a life! Beats the heck out of living in a city anyday.

Thank you inviting us into your home for a nice visit with you. We live in Northeast Tennessee. I have planted a new orchard with 36 verities of herlom apples. We raise heritage breeds of cattle and pigs.

Marigolds will keep some of the pesky bugs away from your crops and they're edible too.

Like Hank Williams Jr. said, "a country boy/girl can survive".

I grew up in NYC and knew nothing about Appalachia until I ran across your videos. I envy your wonderful life. Thank you for sharing it in your videos.

I burst into tears when I saw the flour hit the bacon grease. I watched my grandma make gravy that way too many times to count growing up. She was from Appalachia (Kentucky and my grandpa was from Ohio). Ty for doing these videos. Even after my grandparents moved to Washington state during WWII for the war effort, he had a garden and always grew some tobacco. I was also so happy to hear you say “granny”. That’s what we called mine and now that I live in Texas I rarely hear anyone called that. Hugs 🤗 and ❤️. Absolutely blown away!🙌🏻🤗❤️✨😊

Loved this video. It shows exactly how many Appalachians live. From the homemade cream gravy to the huge woodpile it is so familiar. It is a good clean life, and thanks for all your efforts to portray it as it really is.

Greetings from Tennessee and another woman and musician of the Mountains. I live on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau and enjoy all things old and honest. I first saw your cornbread video while seeking escape from the current sad state of affairs here in America. If we could all sit down to a a big plate of homemade biscuits and gravy, we'd find we all have more in common than not. Mother Maybelle Carter said it best , "Keep on the Sunny Side!

I love that youre showing the positive aspects of appalachia!! So many people believe the worst when its really fiercely loyal people living a normal life.

My favorite part of the day when I was a kid was waking up and smelling the breakfast that my mom would be cooking. She made biscuits and gravy the same way. She was from the hills of Kentucky in the south eastern parts. She used to tell us about how they lived then and it sounded hard and very satisfying. God bless you and your family

I just came across your videos. I too was born, raised and still live in the mountains of Western North Carolina, on property that has belonged to my family for almost 100 years. My grandparents, who lived across the road from us, had a wood cook stove. One of my earliest memories is waking up to the smell of homemade sausage and biscuits with a fried egg and oatmeal. I still heat with wood and raise a garden. This took me way back, to some really great times. We didn’t play music but spent many hours sitting around twisting tobacco or hand rolling sausage to cook up and can. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

There's so much to say about this! I found your channel today and I'm in love ❤️ This reminds me of our lives. The little biscuit makes me think of the homemade biscuits my Dad makes. When I was a kid, he always made me a baby one just like that little one you had. It makes me sad for those people who don't know what our lives are like or haven't experienced it.

Those chickens are gorgeous! We call 'em 'chooks' in Australia. My grandparents farmed and lived like this.

As a young child I remember visiting with grandpa back in a holler in Kentucky. My mother's family raised what they ate. There wasn't a grocery store to go to. Her family raised meat livestock and raised a large garden. As a cild I never understood why grandpa never had electricity or indoor plumbing. My mother would tell her children how she was raised. Life was hard, but very rewarding. The girls of the family would always help out in the house & garden. The boys would tend to the livestock or father firewood or coal to heat with. They would hunt everyday and it wasn't unusual for grandpa to have fried squirrel with biscuits & gravy for breakfast. They provided everything that they needed just by the things that they raised. I have been blessed by learning the way my mother cooked. I miss not being able to be a child again and enjoy grandpas way of life as an adult.

I am enjoying your channel. My Grandpa grew up in Anniston, Alabama. I never realized how many of his traits and sayings came from Appalachia. He moved with his family to Dallas, Texas in the early 1900's. We never realized how many of the wonderful sayings, games and music came from Appalachia! This has been really wonderful for me and my cousins to be able to learn about. Thank you for sharing your life.

GOD bless you and your family Mrs, you Braught joy to my soul . this is how a real motherhood is meant to be , my grand father always said in our native tongue ARAMIAC the language Christ spoke , a mother is the foundation of the home with out the mother the home collapses when she is not present.

milk gravey! I have made this almost every Saturday mornin for my husband for almost 50 years. He taught me. The molasses and butter was a treat when we went to mamaws when I was just a little kid.

Thank you for this! My ancestors come from Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee in the Cumberland area. Made me happy to see the cast iron skillet making milk gravy and the biscuits looked so good. Some of my best childhood memories are of spending time with my grandmother snapping beans snd helping her cook. So much love.

Born and raised in Appalachia momma made red eye gravy called coffee gravy sliced tomatoes up with the breakfast homemade biscuits with a slice of tomatoe in between, corn pone water bread plus ate out of the garden made pickles green beans and corn pickled chow chow pickles kraut Miss those days that's for sure my dad worked the coal mines

My grandmother used a Vienna sausage can to cut biscuits with. She died at 89 years old in 1995. I still have that can I guess I always will.

When you spoke of "leather britches" I had to smile. I've strung many green beans in my youth. My Mother used to be "volunteered" at my workplace to provide them for our dinners!

The accents are different but so much else is the same here in Central PA. A different flair here is the large Amish community which I believe is a HUGE asset to the area. Enjoyed the music. All the best from a Northern fellow Appalachian.
