The first time I ever heard of Iris, I was driving in the country and listening to A Prarie Home Companion. She was introduced and began singing this song, and I had to pull off the road... Iris sings from her heart with such unadorned sincerity.
I just realised this is thirty years old now this year. It just adds to the depth of the lyrics. Since then I have divorced, my parents have both died, my brother's son died in a car crash, his daughter escaped a dodgy relationship, one of my daughters went all religious yet had to get a restraining order, the other has gone through three husbands trying to find the right man. Just life I guess.
Oh it's Iris Dement, oh such a wonderful singer and so good at crafting story telling lyrics. When you see her and hear her you can't help but love her amazing talent! ❤
I remember seeing her that year in Philly on a warm summer day outdoors and the sun shining. I thought for one instance that this is what heaven would be..... 27 years later I believe it even more/
The big picture versus the smaller picture. Joy to your mother, lover and friends is important but recognizing ones others value is important too. Everyone has them. If you ever look in on theses comments Iris, know that we love you.
Her line "I gave joy to my mother" just made me realise how the books I had as a child were a reflection of the care she had for my growing little brain.
I first saw Iris perform, in Minneapolis, in August 1994. The following day my younger brother was in a motorcycle accident. He died three weeks later. His wife, a singer herself, sang "My Life" at his memorial. I love Iris dearly, have attended every concert she had in Minnesota, and have all her recordings. But I can't listen to "My Life" again - it's just too sad.
Absolutely fantastic performance. Grace Griffith also did a good cover of this classic song but the original is best. Iris really has a distinctive and beautiful voice.
I cannot hear this without visualising the scene in the film Mister Lonely and the caricatures painted on eggs of the various characters in the film, which then dissolve into the actors as they lip synch with the song. It is a weird film that has very moving moments.
Yes I can definitely relate. I will be 70 in July and I have so many regrets. My son committed suicide in may 2012. I have never been the same. My heart breaks daily.

My Sincerest condolences To You and your family. Yes Mary, I too have great regrets, I don't think there is anyone in this hard and cruel world hasn't. As you say, your life has not been the same, how could it be, after what you have gone through😪💔. Met heart truly aches for you, and I don't I ow if you believe in Jesus, but I do AND honestly HE has got me through some of the worst days of my life. Believe and SURRENDER EVERYTHING to Jesus, EVEN if you don't practice any faith. Look up The Surrender Prayer This PRAYER is extremely powerful many prayers have been answered by those who are not reglious, but had a little trust. I will remember you in my prayers and thoughts. @@bernadettehays453 thank you so much. Sometimes I just need to talk about him. He did leave me a granddaughter, he named her winter. She is 10, will be 11 in April. I thank God everyday for her. Yes I too am a believer. If it was not for the strength that He gives me I couldn't make it. I pray God bless you for caring and I pray God bless your beautiful family.
