I just combined the two, Mesa Boogie Dual Rec with the Line 6 Helix, which is super convenient because the helix doubles as a back up in the unlikely event that a tube goes down

Nick Gervasi 2005 is actually right when home studio recording litteraly took off thanks to PODS and Vox Valvetronix as well as affordable sound devices lile M-Audio. But in 2005 tube amp and boutique pedal snobbery was at it peak. The line 6 devices were hidden in the fridge the name Line 6 was taboo !!!

Isnt it awesome? Some years ago i had to carry a heavy as fuck tube amp head to every gig, and a cab, and have to deal with all sorts of pedalboard and amp issues, and wire everything up everytime... Now i just rock up to a venue with a helix in one hand and guitar in other, and im ready to go. Its pure bliss.

Helix seems to be the way to go, having an amp and all your effects in on case is pretty convenient for gigs, I was always against it but then I tried one and now I’m sold

i also appreciate how this isn't absurdly bassy or bright. so many dudes like to stand with their knees to the speakers and turn knobs. cab coupling with the stage. treble dimed. and then they can't hear themselves and everyone thinks it sounds bad. EQ your shit for the band, not for you. this tone sits RIGHT in a mix with another guitar and leaves room for the bass. very nice tone, Fluff.

I am not sure he could do that without working out a deal with ML Sound Labs since he said he does use their IRs. Unless you mean using stock Helix Cabs.

It’s just a boosted Revv with some ML IR’s. It’s not magic. Also, recorded your tone into a DAW. I always feel like listening to it as I’m playing and then listening to what I record is different. Maybe my ADD doesn’t really let me concentrate on tone unless I’m really listening back to it.

Jeremy Conner The stock L6 cabs all sound like they are already super high and low EQ’d. Get some Ownhammers or ML Soundlab. I’ve just made my own IR’s of my cabs.

@Jeremy Conner Can't be done with the onboard cabs, they're really dull, lifeless and just generally bad IMO. But get yourself some good IR's, and the Helix is in the same league as Fractal and Kemper, no kidding. Lancaster Audio's (formerly Rosen Digital) Marshall JMP 4x12 is my go to, but the Ownhammer GNR pack is really good too. With good IR's you can get really convincing amp-like tones from both the Placator and REVV with just the stock amp settings; but with the built in cabs you have to add a bunch of EQ's, boosts, cuts and go to heroic efforts to just get a mediocre tone. IME of course.

So, do you dial your Helix in attempt to match the album's mixed and mastered tones, or are you (you, and the band as a whole) dialing in things differently for a live environment? I'm asking because I've found that brighter IRs seem to fit better in a home mix, but those same bright IRs with a solo guitar through a PA are obnoxious, even with a low-pass filter. I also use ML Sound Lab, among others.

Why a lowpass rather than just a shelf? Just curious if you have a specific preference. I'd think you'd want to attenuate the high end for high volumes rather than completely slashing it.. but maybe that's just me

Personally (my guess) I'd think that live is suited to your ear and the audience's ear more than anything, recorded prioritizes the mix

Dave Nelson i think for recording is better using a little less gain...then record double guitar tracks and pan to left and right , this way you can get a beefier sound....in a live situation maybe you can use a little more, specially if there is just one guitar

When you direct to FOH do you high pass/low pass the tone you are sending or do they do that for you? Any tips on making your tone optiomal for going direct?

You dial the tone as it sounds best for you. Mixing it is job of FOH. You can use the global EQ to counter bad acoustics or monitors on stage as it affects all of your presets but it DOESN'T affect the FOH signal.

With your live setup is it impossible to get the sexy guitar feedback sounds with no speakers around and going foh? I don't really play high-gain much but I feel like that element that adds to the realism is missing. No complaints though because my helix and the pros are awesome - just something that catches me from time to time.

Hey @Riffs, Beards & Gear ! I see you have your general volume knob at one o'clock on the unit. Please tell me how do you balance your channel and master volume on your amp block ? I have this really annoying feedback even with the noise gate, and my volume knob is barely at noon. Would really appreciate some help, thanks and love from France !

How do you manage to patch in your 2X12? Is It via a bus send? I'm just wondering because your output from the helix has got a cab sim on it and it would be pointless going into a cap with a cap sim. Or does the helix have a dedicated speaker output were the cap sim is always disabled...?

Did your mission engineering pedal work immediately or did it need some additional tweaking? Mine didn't seem to work properly with my HX Effects, every time I switched a preset it would just not respond anymore. Shipped both my HX Effects and the expression pedal back to Thomann and they couldn't find any issues. Weird...

It's really my personal preference but I much prefer Fractal Audio gear to Line6, the latter has some kind of digital character and high end fizziness that really bothers me and made me pick a Fractal AX8 over the Helix for live use. But all in all great rig Fluff, keep rocking with Dragged Under, you guys rule!

I have read this a lot. And while I will say the fractal stuff sounds great, I have never run in to the high end fizziness on my Helix, and I don't notice it on many videos where they use Helix, but I always set my IRs or built in cabs to roll off highs around 10K and lows below 80-125.... Seems like many people (Like Fluff) have a high end roll off anyways for FOH. I have heard that there is some odd artifacts on most digital (and often the Helix) around 12-14K. Guitars don't really need that high anyways. You can really even get away with rolling off anything higher than 8K in most cases FWIW. But that is what is great about living as a guitarist in today's age! You have 3 GREAT options in Helix, Axe-Fx and Kemper and several GOOD options coming up now. Options benefit us ALL! 😁
