FoE is what made me a brony. I was a fallout fan, and that fanfic got me interested in ponies. Like you said you don't need to know anything about fallout to enjoy the story, but in my sense it was the other way around. I didn't know anything about MLP. I still found it enjoyable. 2 years later I've seen every episode and a full fledged fan. But I will say that if you are a fan of both franchises before you read it, you'll find yourself Squeeing intensely at all the references.
Gawd I love project horizons, so hard to find people who are fully read up on it, let alone those doing reviews on it. I would have done one my self... but the story isn't done yet :P

I love the mystery, the complexity of characters, the way Blackjack is certainly a product of where she came from, but the way she dwells is such a slog. I actually have taken a few breaks and not even realize it until days later, where with FoE, I had to make myself stop reading to do normal human stuff. And, for some reason, it never really feels like fights are personal risks for BJ. I always felt the risk with Lil'Pip. The comedy often felt like it broke the tone or suddenly turned into a caricature of itself to make me laugh. Regardless, these two books have inspired me to continue my own original work and helped me find missing links I needed for it... Oh and I'm only on chapter 58. Gotta really give them credit on word count and consistent tone.
Horizons is the only story i've ever gone back to re-read, and I love to read. Normally I find I can't enjoy a story a second time since I know what's going to happen. But with PH i found my self enjoying it even more BECAUSE i've read it before. Will definately go through a third time when I get the chance
neoaustin164 Well with a story as massive as PH, there's a very good chance that you'll pick up more during the second read through than you did the first :)
Some advice for potential readers of Project Horizons. Make sure you're familiar with Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt". His voice specifically in that song is apparently a dead ringer for the Dealer. Also, if you've already read the original FoE, I suggest reading Pink Eyes first as a shorter "pallet cleanser" of sorts. Also... be prepared to cry... a lot. Also laugh harder than you thought possible, but mostly cry.
Project Horizon's is done, has been for a few months now. Fantastic story, sad, happy, and bittersweet moments all the way through. Unfortunately, there is nothing to replace Horizons at the moment...I have other fanfics that I'm reading, but first Fallout Equestria, then Project Horizons were ones that I kept manually checking for nearly every day. Some day, hopefully, there will be another. Until then....war...war never changes.
Honestly, Project Horizons has this awesome start to a story but kind of begins to lose it as time goes on. It's a funny thing, so be careful when considering reading this through to the end. The first half of the story is likable and very memorable; Rampage is awesome and is a thrill every time she's on screen, Blackjack's origins and decisions feel like they have weight to them due to the effort put into showing her thought process, and every location defined in great detail. Hoofington is an awesome place. The character interactions fit with the friendship-y and teamwork-y feel that the original had, with new kinds of wonders to be found. Sanguine was a nice character and in the end it was nice to see where it all ended up. It gets a little hazy past the halfway point though, so caution is advised. From the looks of it, Somber "lost his touch" at around the 35th chapter and onwards and a lot of readers caught on to this. He goes from making each situation have exposition and weight behind them into: shoving lots of unnecessary deaths into every single chapter, Blackjack seeming to not getting any character development ever and instead having her just do X to fix X problem (with everything in her mind just piling ontop of eachother forever), having very serious situations roll past without any inherent focus or consequences, and having the ships not be taken seriously. Somber admitted that he was inspired by Anime and generally put in as many action scenes as he could. The story really didn't need a scene where ~blackjack basically takes on a tank solo~, in my opinion. The original had a friendship theme, and past the halfway point this one... has blackjack do whatever. If you you like a cheesy action story and this fits your bill, go for it I say.
Good review :) I myself am currently in the middle of PH and fully agree with you on how incredible they both are. Hands down my two favorite books of all time. I powered thru the original in only 5 days because I couldn't put it down haha Project Horizons is proving to be a much, much longer read, which I love. Short stories aren't any fun for me for the most part and I never want this ride to end :D
I like apple jack Fallout: Equestria was the first book I actually read from start to finish in its entirety. When I first heard about it I didn't even care for the games let alone a book, and I was new to MLP too. So I read the intro to see what all the hype was about and it changed my life, honestly. It's opened me up to reading so many other incredible stories I never would have found otherwise and it brings so much happiness into my life that wasn't there before. So yes, it's the one thing in my life that I'll forever have a deep commitment to.
Ah, I have a funny story surrounding this beast of a fanfiction: I've known about it for some time since joining the fandom, but at the time I refused to read ANYthing with gore due to my experience with Cupcakes... [Ugh, still hate that thing], and even though I loved [and still love Fallout universe] I simply didn't want to combine it with ponies... until the beggining of this year, I was once again playing through Fallout 3, and as a coincidence one of my close friends read the first few chapters of original FoE, unfortunately, he stopped somewhere around the chapter 3 or 4, claiming that it was too brutal to read and, which is important, told me NOT to read it. And as with most things that someone tells you not to do... you do it... a week later, I decided to give it a shot... I've ended up falling in love with both, the world and the story, Kkat really did an amazing job at combining these universes. Now, the funny part: I was constantly rambling about how awesome FoE was... and in the end, I made the friend read it too, and he loved it to bits! Too! (Since then I've persuaded about 3 people to give this a shot. All of them love it, and at the moment, I am slowly going to the most actual chapter of Project Horizons... I would like it as much as the original, or even more, be it not for the final volume, that so far makes me worry, I really do hope it has at least somehow happy end as did it's ancestor. If not... Well... that takes away a lot of the enjoyability.
First of all, great editing! It was such a cool video to watch * - * I kind of distanced myself from the Brony fandom but I still enjoy it, and I'm also a huge fallout fan, and I never finished Fallout Equestria if I'm completely honest, but watching your video really really makes me want to read Project Horizon, I'll have a little vacation soon so it should be a good time to start. When I was reading the original FoE, I thought it was the heaviest and hardest book I had read ever. But it was a child fairy tale in comparison with 'Project Horizons'... even the 'Arbu case' of Littlepip wasn't so frightening like that happened to Blackjack's Stable.
Being a huge fan of FOE and even writing a fic myself, I can say this is a great review, i have read the original and I'm caught up with Project Horizons, and they are some of the best fan fictions out there. Keep it up...and Happy travels wastelanders
I really love Project Horizon and the whole FO:E universe. I've already read PH.... twice.... and now starting again :P Also Murky Number Seven is also a worthy read.
I wish I could read PH again, but the last quarter of the book was so bad im not sure I can read it again. It was an amazing book up until the whole thing with Cognitum.
I am a big time Fallout fan and have spent way to many hours playing in many Fallout games. When I found Fallout Equestria I was all over it, and have read many of the other stories that have come up by a lot of the fans. In saying that Project Horizons was my favorite of all of them. The grim dark story written by Somber really connected with me in a lot of strange ways. I thought it was a grate story however as a word of warning to anyone that is thinking about picking it up the ending is kind of hard to read. The last four chapters just broke my heart.

At the beginning he is only a Dick that hates "CUUUUNTTSSSS". xD But it needs to know his tragic background story to know, why he hates mares so much and even he is a *Beep* in a metallic body, if it weren't for this nasty bitch, that later is the "Queen of Manticores", it hadn't come to this in first place... and then this part of he is the actualy "dad" of Rampage? That was a lot to take in, in the Time I read the Story. ^^
The thing that bugged me most about that is he never really got to reconcile with Rampage. His whole back story and the way he looked after Rampage in his own way was just a lot to take in. But that's one of the things I really liked about PH. For the most part there was no white or black just a whole lot of gray. Ponies that you just hated in the beginning because they just seemed evil were mostly driven to that extreme.
cyanleopard And that was one of the Reasons, that I needed MONTHS to come down from this Emotional Trip, before I could even THINK of reading another FE Story. This one "Fan Crossover Story" was so brilliant written, better as all Novels I have here in my shelf, that it is a pitty that this isn't an actual own Franchise that could be marked for example on Audible on Amazon, or as an real actual Game! I know there are free audiobooks here on youtube, but most of the voice actors have the voice capacity to plausible bring it over and the few wo do, have stoped making them. I mean, maybe the right professional voice actor could bring out even more of this Story. And really, maybe hasbro and bethesda should put theire heads together with KKat and Sombra and some of the others, to make an actual Fallout Equestria Game and put in some of the compleated Storys in parts, for example make a radio show with DJ Pony who tells the Storys of the other Wasteland Heroes as well as the Players one, so you become the Illusion that you are not the only pony that tries to do good in this horrific world. Damn, I have to laugh every Time I think over Homages statement: And Horaay, my Toaster Repair Pony is here to repair my... toaster... xD Such things I miss in actual Fallout Games since Fallout 3. In this Games YOU are the ONLY one doing good it looks like. There isn't any other on the news insted of the BOS, Institute, some Raider or super mutant news. You are the hero or villian and no one else. you are the Vault Dweller, Sole Survivor what ever. So why can't there be another one? An NPC or another Player with its very own Story? Or why there aren't news of other Parts of the Wasteland too? Maybe with a Quest to repair some towers to spread the signal over the borders? Fallout 4 was for me like a 3D game with a 2D logic behind it. Fallout Equestria on the other hoof was like a 4D Cinema experience! Fallout Equestria is what got me into Fallout. New Vegas ended up being my first Fallout game, and Fallout Equestria and Project Horizons got me into doing FOE content. Mostly Fanfic and Animation.
I am an avid fan of the original fallout equestria, but I had not known that project horizons was the equivalent of new vegas up until now. It was even more of a surprise when I learned that the "blackjack" OC was indeed the replacement for the courier. Indeed I'd even say it is a suitable replacement. While I can make an innumerable amount of different characters that use different strategies to survive in the world in fallout 3, I seem to only be able to make characters in New vegas that are either BoS or Rangers. I've actually never done a playthrough where I sided with th Legion, even though they interest me heavily. This is mostly brought about by my inability to even play as an Evil character. I have successfully created a "Neutral Badass" in Fallout 3, which this inparticular character was quite possibly the best and most interactive class build I've ever used before and I'd reccomend it to anyone, but I still had trouble maintaining neutral karma, and around the end of my most recent play session of this character, I still find my karma meter to be at a solid "good" if not anything more. Another thing to note is that these Fallout and Elder Scrolls games have such amazing foundations, stories and experiences, but blno matter how far I get into a playthrough, it never really truly seems to end. That is quite possibly the most beautiful part about these games. An endless world of creativity, built to house creativity, and as endless as the name implies. Oh btw /)
Sabre Cat Personally, I always found it really difficult to play as an evil character,,, at the beginning ;p, but you get used to taking advantage of every situation soon enough xD
Ohh I never had a problem with manipulating people in game, but I wouldn't do anything that could be labeled as "immoral" for example, blowing up Megaton. ( I am aware that is a stretch from manipulation but it's still some thing right? XD)
i remember a couple non fallout references from it like the Tank Dempsey one with Cerberus in high tower or pinkie pie quoting doctor who but hey, no one will really read this lets be honest :D
Just a couple days ago, I finished up the Fallout: Equestria, Manehattan Edition audiobook. It's fan-freaking TASTIC! And I'm on Chapter 9 of the PH audiobook
Re-watching this at the start of 2017... New spin offs of Fallout Equestria popping up everywhere, and a long read now actually meaning over a million words now on FimFiction...
Cool review. Another, shorter, way of describing Horizons is IMO to say that its a slightly more... powergamy FoE story. Higher power levels, bigger guns, more dakka, bigger impending explosions and what have you.
i read The Original Fallout Equestria and Project Horizons and Pink eyes all 3 of these books are a grandmaster peice of literature better than any published book I ever read. the only thing you got to know when getting into the series is that these books are extremely mature they contain drug scenes extreme blood and gore scenes they described a sex camp once so this book isn't for kids. but besides that the series is outstanding-ly awesome
I honestly never gave a flying buck about the Fallout universe. I was attracted to Horizons by Rampage and who's daughter she happens to be and there's a Glowing Ghoul Silver Spoon that plays a vital part in a few chapters. But now I love Blackjack and it's been quite a rollercoaster following her adventures. Warning, this is story get's EXTREMELY DARK and you will cry. But you will also laugh. I'm on chapter 70, and I highly recommend this story! ANTE UP!
You should do an audio book of either of these books...Sadly Crazedrambing has since stopped his recording for about two years now and its hard to find someone else to read it.
I began reading Fallout Equestria about a week ago. Boy, was each chapter a long read. But, I really enjoy the fanfic and I could see why it has a large fanbase. I haven't finished the story yet, just finishing chapter 37, but still I gotten inspired and highly motivated to create my own FoE work in a form of comics. Now, I don't think my work will EVER get high of a standard as the two stories, but I do hope people will enjoy it. Even if they don't, I am to motivated and inspired to stop because of it. I wouldn't be surprise if this becomes what I draw the most.
I actually haven’t read/listened to project horizons, I was kinda skeptical about it, but your review makes me want to give it a chance. I listened to FoE some years back (Pink Eyes too) and that’s actually what got me into both MLP, a show I thought could only be enjoyed by young children, and fallout, an amazing game I’d wished I’d heard of sooner

Given the Goddess plot, and the Enclave plot, the original Fallout Equestria seems to take place in the first 2 games. Granted, Project Purity from FO:3 (giving clean water to the wasteland) is alluded to in Fallout Equestria as Gardens of Equestria (which is itself an allusion to the GEC which is present in FO:2), but it’s not a major plot point.
Idk if you've read it or would be willing to; but id like to hear you talk about another side story called Murky Number Seven. I find it to be a great story, but it will grab you by the feels and use them as a jump rope.

Hmm, I'm wondering if I'd like Project Horizons. I haven't even finished FoE because I don't want it to end. Maybe PH would be a good addition to keep it going, although I'm not sure I would like the characters as much as the originial.
It's certainly not for everyone, although I recommend giving it a try ;o. Reading the first chapter will give you a bit of an indication as to what you're getting in to ;p

I actually just finished the original Fallout: Equestria book (best book ever), but Im not sure if I want to read Fallout: Equestria | Project Horizons. I grew really attached to littlepip and her friends and im not sure If I want to read another book that's in the same universe, and have to reconnect with a bunch of new characters. Also, im still emotionally destroyed after reading the original book.
I understand where you are coming from, but I think that you should give Project Horizons a chance. Blackjack and her crew work quite separately from what Littlepip was doing and feels like a completely different story. Tyandaga said it best himself, reading the first chapter should give a little insight into the journey ahead

I loved that story. Sooo much detail and soo much of something I love. Those things would be fallout, MLP, And of course a good read. And in a good book, I can always appreciate an author who isn't afraid to create some controversy and break some common structure or morals that we see in almost every book in today's time. I'm going to be honest that the Last of Us is still quite possibly going to take the spot for best post apocalyptic story in my case. And this is coming from someone who has been a Fallout fan for years.
At the Moment I'm at chapter 18 from FE PH, and it's pretty good. I heard it here on RU-vid in the Audiobook Version. Too bad that there are, at the Moment, only 21 Chapters in the Playlist. As I had written there, it would be pretty great, if this Audiobook Files, would be collected and then convert in a Mod for one of the Fallout Games... Maybe one for the next Fallout 4, after it and later the Modding Tools are released. ^^ I thought of it so: The Player will found the first Two Chapters, and a Message, on a lost Computer in some Ruines, that sends him or her out in the Wasteland, to find the other Chapters on Holotapes or other Computers and after the player compleated one of the Storys (or both), he become some sort of Special Passwort for a hidden Section in a special Building, or Bunker or so. Maybe the hidden location of "Stable 99"? ^^ And there the Adventurer would find something special, that was told of in one of the Storys or so. It would be a pretty great mod, even if it isn't the ruined Equestria we would see, but more like a BIG Easter Egg. But I don't think, that the Makers of MLP and Bethesda, which have the rights on the Fallout Franchise, would ever made a Crossover Game together. MLP is for Kids, Fallout for grown ups, and bring the wonderfull world of MLP FiM to such a Cataclysmig End, would be to horrible for Kids I think... even if it would be not Canon and a Parallel World. And then is there the Problem with the Buyers. Not evers MLP Fan is a Fan of Fallout Equestria (or fallout itself) and every Fallout Fan even Knows about FE. Would such a Official Projekt, even bring in the Production Costs? (I have an Artist Friend that loves MLP even more than me, but never played only one Fallout part, and even have read one chapter of the FE Storys yet and I think he isn't the only one.) This Storys have a pretty good Potential, and I would LOVE to Play them, but I'm only ONE of Millions of Customers that buy and play games and love the MLP Franchise, and thats not enough. So I don't think there would ever come out such a Crossover... too bad. How do you Guys think over this?
+Dokdiamant Hi there. After more or less 3 Weeks, I',m down with the Story, and MAN WHAT A STORY! Many to laugh, many EPIC Battles, but also very sad points that hat made me cry like a Waterfall too. ^^ It isn't easy to read it, because the single Chapters are very great. 30 - 50 sides each and over 76 Chapters + Prolog and Epilog. But, I was so taken from it, I hadn't much sleep in the whole reading Time with 3 - 5 Chapters each Day. Definity a MUST for FE Fans... Oh and the last chapter and the Epilog was brought out only some Days before. The Story is now complete. Have Fun. ;-)
Hey, just a warning for anypony wanting to read Fallout: Equestria. It's very, very crass, has a lot of crude language and swearing, and the beginning chapters have A LOT of, how should I put this, "Adult Themes," AKA kids should not read this. Also, lots of imagery.
Also when he means vivid descriptions of some of the stuff take it literally it is really dark personally it's is a good read but like I said before really dark it will talk about he two Main Subjects sex and murder. HAVE FUN :D

Doblestorm I think that would be possible, as long as fallout 4 provides a lot of new and exciting things for authors to work off of. Unfortunately, we'd have to wait for november for the game, and even longer for anyone to try their hand at a story, but who knows? ^.^
I wouldn't call BJ's friends' loyalty "questionable" so much as "divided"; they each have opposing drives that push them to both follow and oppose Blackjack, which makes them much deeper characters than those in FoE.
AubriGryphon Yeah, I agree with you. When I made the video, I had only read around 20 of the chapters, so my opinion was slightly misguided ;p. But I completely agree with ya ;p
I didn't mind her changing the first couple of times as it did add to the struggle, but when she went full on Bio-Mechanical Alicorn i was just, "ugh.... really..." but that wasn't the end of her changes, she goes full circle and becomes organic again because she ends up inside a clone blank of herself then later ends up back in her original bio-mechanical body that that from what i've been told merges with the blank organic body, creating new bio-mechanical form with flesh and feather wings, not to mention her mechanical parts look to be decorated in Luna fanatic decorations.
Crystal Eclair I had issues with a lot of story choices in Project Horizons myself, which made me grew a lot of dislike in it. However, Blackjack going cyber wasn't necessary one of them. It was the crazy Alicorn upgrade itself that I disliked. I actually enjoyed Cyber Blackjack before the Alicorn upgrade myself.
Crystal Eclair no her mechanical body and her blank body are still separate bodies the mechanical body became a bit more organic because of SPOILERS Luna's alicorn soul altered the body based on the mind occupying it. I can see what you're feeling though better than most people's reasons for not liking it at least. Little pips body changes too though her story is about half as long. Also she takes the mutation and zebra alteration route which is more subtle than the mechanical route.
I didn't realize it was possible to finish PH. I kind of equated reading the whole story with watching every episode of Naruto: a kind of insane undertaking

Project Horizons remains to this day my all time favourite work of fiction. Not Fanfiction or Fan Story or even MLP Brony stories. It is my favourite work of fiction period.
I need to read it and the orignal fallout but riend introduced to me fallout equestria heroes first and i been reading it and fallout equestria hiveminds and loving them both. I only imagine how good the orignal and horizens be when i get to then. If havent read thise yet i recomend it. ^^ there not finished but they are good so far, shame not finished yet so i got wait for next update for both of them.
Maybe I could draw some inspiration from Blackjack and make a slightly "bad" character in new vegas that has her heart in a good place. However, I'd still say I came up with the most amazing characters I've seen for fallout 3 and fallout new vegas in terms of backstory and gameplay design. (Not to brag again of course)
My thoughts on the original Fallout: Equestria and Project Horizons: 31/10 would read again and in fact doing so right now. (31/10 for those who get the reference)

The only problem is coming up with a good explanation to why no ponies have seen them. The comic itself just kind of inserted them in, which did bother me. A Fo:E one shot would help flush out the idea, but having them in the ever free Forrest would not work, maybe.
I love the foe universe it's interesting and attention grabing. also I can't positively say so but I do believe each of lilpips friends have also shot or such like that damaged her. I always found it funny that the trend continues in other stories. it's something I'm always watching for. good review btw thanks for sharing your point of view.

Hallway through my second listening of this story after going through the first again xd. It's still being written but FoE: Falling Shadows is really good as well, if it goes according to plan it will be longer than Horizons and sitting about 1.1m words so far. Anyways thanks for the review.
I have A problem with Fallout Equestria. If I listen a music ( mainly covers) I afraid read the commentaries cause there is a lot of spoilers and I haven't even start to read it. But after your video I feel more like to do it.

Trust me, it gets good. Infact, I'm currently waiting for somber to finish the final chapter! You will see similarities between blackjack and littlepip, but there are some drastic differences. That's good though, because the last thing we need is a littlepip clone xD
You now it makes me wonder, would someone make a Fallout Equestria game? In the style of fallout 2 just for the simplification of programming and to cut down on production time.
