"You look fine, go home, boil some water, and add some honey," my PCP told me. I sat there, shocked, that I was being ignored and dismissed after telling him that I wasn't feeling good.
My back was hurting, I felt exhausted, and I could no longer do what I loved most: teaching. I was coughing so much that I could barely finish my lectures to my students.
In this video I talk about the symptoms that came up for me at age 28, and how I tried to navigate the U.S. healthcare system. Due to my healthcare insurance (HMO), I could not access my PET scan because my PCP had the final say of whether I would be able to get it or not.
I consider myself lucky because the timing of all of this was near the "insurance switch" window. On December 1, 2021 I was finally able to switch to have my PPO insurance and actually choose who my healthcare team could be without so much of the structural barriers that exist.
I am now currently 31 years old and I have been surviving and living with this disease for 2.5 years.
