In today’s video, I am re-revisiting the question in our first and second Q and A video series. “I cannot get my sewing machine to pick up the bobbin thread.
Don’t Forget To Subscribe! www.youtube.co...
The issue may be that the needle driver depth is not set correctly. To ensure that your needle driver is in the correct location you’re going to place your index/pointer finger under the hole on the bottom side of the sewing arm. With your finger in place slowly move your flywheel in one complete rotation. If the needle comes through the hole and starts to drive into your finger you need to stop moving the flywheel or back your finger away from the hole. (I don’t want any negative comments with people piercing their fingers because they went to fast with the flywheel.) If that happens your needle driver is adjusted to low. You should only feel the tap of the needle when your needle drive is adjusted correctly. (When I say a tap I mean that you can feel the needle, but it does not hurt or poke through the skin. If you see blood then your needle is too low!!) If your finger is in place and you don’t feel anything; your needle driver is adjusted too high.

Well Harrison I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos on this machine. I was ready to try to send this thing back or get the sledge out before I decided to watch all of your videos. Between the needle bar adjustment, the bobbin carrier and the bobbin drive bar adjustment I was able to get this thing going. There is no way the piece of leather that came with this was made on this machine. All three adjustments were off. I am really impressed with how well this will sew and I like the primitive way to adjust the tensions and stitch length. I can't wait to take it apart and do my own improvements to make it smoother and more user friendly. Again Thank you, Thank you. I wish I could buy you a beer sometime.

You're a Rock Star,... lol! It is 03 and I have been screwing around with this thing since yesterday morning. Now I understand what happened, needle broke and got stuck and the needle post got pulled down about 1/32". I fixed everything else! Bought this thing 3 years ago and who knows where the manual is and it wouldn't be much help anyway. I noticed the needle was low, but didn't know where it was set originally.I could time this thing in my sleep and disassemble it and re-assemble it like my sweet 16. Thanks! ManThere's a little Chinese guy who's ears are probably ringing! Maddening when the bobbin keeps breaking the upper thread! I owe you a beer!

Great Vids friend! :-) Before I found this I did a search and the answer I found from a machine manufacturer was to insert the bobbin-driver when the flywheel handle is at 9 O' Clock and orient the driver so that the rear-wall of the driver starts at 9 O'clock in the "hole" and finishes at about 1 O'Clock. Worked first time for me on my machine. :-)

I wanted to thank you for sharing all your knowledge! I've been trying to get my machine working for about two weeks, been watching all your videos as well as the other guys sharing on RU-vid, my problems have been breaking the thread, not tightening up the bottom stitch I would end up looking good on the top stitch but a big mess on the bottom and then after a few stitches, the thread would break. I tried everything you mentioned in your videos until I found this one. My needle bar ended up needing to be close to flush on top in order for me to just feel the needle touch my finger underneath, this solved all my problems. THANK YOU, SIR!!

Just wanted to say thanks so much, I went through all the basic set up videos you have and it took me until this point to get my machine working. THANK YOU!!! It finally worked picking up the bobbin thread! The point was nowhere close to the bottom, The needle bar was about 1/4 inch above the lug and I had to lower the bar almost flush with the lug!!! What surprised me is that I just got the machine and it had the normal leather sample with stitches stuck on the needle so I assumed it was already set, but you know what they say about assuming!! Well thank you very much for your videos they have been a GREAT HELP!!! Honestly watching your videos was what inspired me to get the machine!! Again thanks and keep the videos coming!!!

Thanks again for the needle bar position. I ran into this exact issue after a modification I just made. Having a Juki DDL-5550 that has a knee lift for the pressor foot, at 6’3” I had to fabricate one for this one as well. I don’t have any video but will take photos and send to you. It turned out great, very simple and also spent nothing using what had in the garage already. I made a simple wooden stand with a center gap to “C” clamp on my Juki table for easy removal. It is all attached to that wood base, linkage to the back, pivots to transfer motion to the rear then captured link moves forward the lift arm and have 3/4” (19mm) of lift. Thanks to your efforts, explanation and the fun you had with your results inspired me to fabricate this. After all, having a free hand always helps. Thanks very much! Thanks for that comment!! I have been looking for someone with a Juki machine, that way I could pick their brain about set up and building a table. I have a bar tack Juki and a buddy of mine sent the motor to run it. Now I just need to build a table and putt everything together.
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 4 года назад
@@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks My Juki is a single needle lock stitch as they call it. It came with a table and clutch type motor that I like. As you may know, they run like a weed-eater on crack, stitching 3 feet in 1/2 seconds, so I ordered large and really small pulley, then welded a bracket to reduce speed. The motor adjustment takes care of first belt tension, table adjustment for over all height adjust second belt. Now runs so I can control it. I will be happy to email off your channel page. The temperature dropped 60+ degrees F today so had to get outside stuff done. Will take photos to send you soon, showing how the motor hangs by gravity, but has tensioner rod too. It is because if your videos, I bought the Chinese boot stitcher, now with kneed operated pressor foot lift and stitch length indicator. I will show you both... as soon as my finger thaw out!

Sounds like a bobbin feeding issue. It might help to polish the bobbin shuttle and bobbin well with a Dremel tool. I have a video where I demonstrate how to polish the shuttle and you can use the same method to polish the well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DB9wwwC7V5M.html Skip to 6:50 to get right to the point.

Brother, how can I get a few dollars in your hands for a burger and a brew? You absolutely solved my issue here and I love that you are conceptualizing for all the different variants of machine out there. Like I think I have a newer model because my machine has threading go through horizontally through the driving arm versus vertically through it.

Thanks for all the good info, but I still had trouble with the bobbin thread picking up until I replaced it. The factory bobbin thread was more like mono fishing line, but the machine works fine now with a thicker polyester thread on the bobbin. Hope this helps.
@BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg
@BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg Месяц назад
Thanks for free tutorials and Q&As. I'm having issues with my machine. The upper thread goes under the bobbin-well (bobbin-axis? on the market) and gets entangled around the gear where the rod runs on. I have no idea what to do to stop this from happening. I'd appreciate very much if anyone could help. I'm also having the absurdly high thread tension to the point I can snap a thread by just tugging it to the needle. I'm polishing everywhere like mad to fix this issue as I speak. (I don't think my machine was built right. I had to remove one of two pressure foot springs not to pole holes in the leather, too.)
@BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg
@BillWilliamsonParody-cy5dg Месяц назад
I'm still struggling with this machine but I made some progress. The right kind of thread makes an enormous difference. The thread I just got is a bonding thread? It's coated, apparently. Without this, I can do nothing. The mono filament thread the machine came with has been nothing but a curse to me. When you doubt, change thread & needle. I also polished everywhere the thread touches. I mean everywhere. The build quality of this machine is a nightmare and every corner was tearing the thread little by little. Also the spring on the bobbin shuttle has the tendency to pinch the thread instead of just pressing it. That pinching occurs when I use the holes further from the spring's screw & the spring is touching the wall. I decided to have some distance between the spring and the wall, so I can sew. Over all, this machine is way too finicky for me to handle. Maybe I got a lemon of a machine. I don't know. I suppose to pay like 5 grands for this sort of machine, so I can't complain too much, perhaps... This machine tests you. Whoever still here please with me luck.

There is nothing wrong with the ol'Walmart thread as long as it's bonded nylon. You only run into issues when you try to run plain cotton thread through these machines. That's a good tip about using your drill for winding bobbins!! Thanks for commenting

Hey, Brother, I'm still having trouble with this thing! I've had it for nearly a year and was quickly frustrated. I'm now going "into production" with my leatherwork - the hobby turned into something else when people asked me to make them leather items. Anyway, I've taken the machine back up and I've spent nearly all day today trying to get the bobbin thread to pick up. I've cleaned, lubed, polished (fine steel wool and fine grit "wet/dry" sandpaper, then oiled lightly. I can get the needle thread to "loop," but it doesn't pick up the bobbin thread. I've watched your videos on the subject several times. I'm going to message and maybe email you if I can find your address.

Did you get this comment: " There are two screws under the frame near the sewing head. One controls the presser foot pressure and the other one slightly to the rear controls the stitch length." The screw without the spring's attached is the screw that adjusts the stitch length.

Mine will pick up the thread, but it won’t tie the knot that needs to be done. So when I pull the piece of leather away it undoes the thread. Any tips? I did recently replaced a broken needle. Could it be that the bobbin thread is loose?

Using waxed hemp cord with 22 needles n 2 3oz piecesof upholstery leather. I've tried setting the timing needle depth everything. Pretty sure it all correct with positioning quoted in other videos just can't figure out why it's not locking in/ pulling the top stich back tough... tho looks good on top

How do you adjust the bobbin tension do you put the thread under the spring all the time? or leave it out for heavy leather? thanks for your help Yankee
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 лет назад
You can adjust the bobbin tension by choosing one of two holes or you can add extra tension by crossing from one hole to the other. I always put the thread under the spring, I have not had success running without one.

I have watched all your videos on setting it up and its correct, but I can't seem to figure out whys it breaks on a back Stitch (sewing over stitching to lock your thread) thanks

I am not sure what .45mm is converted to the standard thread size, but .5mm is equal to size 207. A size 207 needs a needle size of 140/22, so my best guess is that the needle is too small.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 лет назад
Or it could be a tension issue because these machines are not meant to run waxed thread. I have used waxed thread in the past with no issues, but I only ran one tension disk and I had to fiddle with the tension in the bobbin.

Hello. I have watched all your videos about bobbin timing and adjustment. My machine will now pick up the bobbin thread 3 out of 5 times but it will not sew. The thread from the needle misses the bobbin thread about every 3rd or 4th stitch and then the thread from the needle gets jammed in the bobbin. Size t135 #138 mil-spec thread, size 20 needle. Any ideas? Thanks again for all the effort you have put into these videos. -Rick
@rickr9055
@rickr9055 4 года назад
Update: It seems it was a timing issue. For my machine to run the bobbin carrier has to be at about 4 oclock with the crank at 12 oclock. Otherwise the bobbin carrier does not go far enough clockwise to get the pointy part (probably has a name) past the well the needle is in and pick up the thread. I accomplished this by moving the bar with the gears that turn the bobbin a little past flush with the crank at the 3 oclock position. I never would have gotten this thing running without your help. -Rick
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 4 года назад
I happy to hear you got your machine up and running. I was thinking it could have been a timing issue or the needle bar needing to be lowered down a bit. These machines can be temperamental, I had a guy that was just one tooth off from being in the correct timing.

@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 5 лет назад
I would start off by checking the needle to see if there is any burs, then make sure the needle size is big enough for the thread your using. If both of those are good I would move on to checking the bobbin tension and the needle bar height. If you still can't get your machine to sew after that feel free to send another comment.

Harrison, i got the 22/140 Organ Industrial needles, and some T-70 #69 poly thread, could not find the T-135 thread you recommended. The thread seems light and not really any stronger than what I had , broke the needle on the first couple of stitches...thoughts?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks 6 лет назад
The T-70 is a good thread to work with, I use it on light projects. The 22/140 needle your using is way to big for that T-70. I would use a 16-18 sized needle for running the lighter stuff. As for the broken needle, it could be a number of things. I would need to see your machine to help troubleshoot that.

Maybe you should offer a service of setting these up for people that have bought these machines. I have one and it is not working no matter what i do. It will not catch the bobbin thread, and did only once. and when it did the machine did not advance the leather. It bound up and would not sew. These things are terrible in my opinion and if if was for the fact I cannot return it I would rather use it as a boat anchor. HUGE waste of money in my opinion.

Thank you for showing me around my machine. After adjusting my depth of my needle, I realized my material wasn't walking. I'm going to call it a cam system for the needle and the foot. The cam for the foot has two bolts to tighten it down to the rotating shaft. Once I realized this, I found a video showing the relative position that the lift should start. That cam is solid now. I'm still having to work on mine, but I'm one step closer. I had another link on here, but to support this channel I've changed it to a video of him showing the cam positioning. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2tlT2prY8qg.html

Hi Harrison, I'm having a fair amount of trouble with my sewing machine and was hoping you'd be able to help! I'm using #92 thread and the needle that came with it (I want to say it's an 18 needle). When I first started using it, the machine worked flawlessly but when I started running it yesterday, I could only make it through around 2 stitches before the thread would snap. I think that it was knotting outside of the leather causing it to snag?? The issues came about after I was messing with the machine and trying to get the walking foot to stop tearing up the leather - I simply used a file like you recommended previously (thanks for the recommendation!). What do you think is happening? Here is a link to the video showing what's happening. Thanks for your help! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QtzTxhgo04c.html

@Carolyn Lance I am sending photos that Mainly Acres may choose to place in a future video, narrate and show how I fabricated a "Knee" lift for the pressor foot. It requires some fabrication skills, some welding / brazing / metal & bending / drilling one spot / and pallet wood or substitute to glue foam and staple some vinyl to push with your knee. His channel has become the "Go-To" location for clear information about setting up, using, diagnosing and having fun with this machine. This is about having fun, no electricity unless you want and perhaps make some products to sell, or fix stuff. The lever is under the main upper frame, directly behind the forward top thread tension disc. It is a little awkward to work on this cam method, but gets it done. I make a simple wood base, glue and screws, but included a place to attach a 4" C clamp to remove from my existing sewing bench, so I can used my other machine. Since it sits right on the edge and the other machine has a knee operated pressor foot lifter that I really like, I thought what the heck, go for it. May not be for all, but I like having a free hand while doing certain task. Best of luck! Retired ASE Master Auto Tech / Retired
