Some great patterns, very flattering. As a beginner I would highly recommend making mockups from old sheets, cheap fabrics or muslin. I wish someone would have encouraged me to do this. It will give you the confidence to cut into your good fabric as well as learning how the pattern fits together.

I love the intention here. The idea of becoming more self reliant and less consumeristic is very appealing.

Cheapest way to get decent T-shirt fabric is to buy the largest mens T’s you can find. Either 1 or 2 is usually plenty for a women’s T depending on what you find.

I made the saltwater slip in late last year and it was pretty easy to make. The hardest part for me was the bias binding, cutting it well and also sewing it without stretching it but I haven’t had much experience with bias binding. I did find the sew along video that Chelsea from Friday pattern company useful and actually I’ve watched the Heather blazer one too because I highly doubt I’ll be able to sew that without the video. I recently had some A0 patterns printed with plan make do and that worked out cheaper than Officeworks when ordering a few. Some great choices in your make 9 Katie 😊

Ahahaha! Much like retail garment sizing, I've found pattern number sizing to have just plucked random numbers from air and be like, "Yes, this is a size." Some pattern makers use colors or symbols for sizes. As a fellow beginner, I've found the best bet is to go by the body measurements and check the finished garment measurements (don't pick your size by finished garment measurements, but do check it for how much ease you want).

Hi mate! Fellow Brisbane seamstress here. If you haven't discovered it yet, I highly recommend checking out the fabric section at Reverse Garbage in Woolloongabba. Great finds of fabric offcuts at good prices. I'm off to check out how you've gone with the rest of your makes since this vid. 👌

I’m am so glad I found your chanel! In 2020 I thought I would become a sewer but quickly realized learning to sew clothes for a plus size body was just as difficult as shopping in stores for my body at times. Thank you for sharing these patterns and companies, I am feeling inspired to try again!

For the robe look for a cotton lawn (lighter) or brushed cotton (which feels like old soft sheets). Good luck!

I suggest, especially for spring & summer, dresses. Dresses are cool & fashionable plus easy to sew you can layer the dress with a t-shirt to dress down & a light professional jacket on top for work. Also you can layer a sweater for fall with boots. Anyways I live in Alaska & always worked in make dominated work places. I am just plain tired of pants. I am buying dresses & t-shirts and jackets. Planning to find a way to wear them in winter at least off work. I am semi retired. And I love vintage/upscale clothing & furniture & painting & anything to save money & make it unique. I used to see beautiful dresses for proms & special occasions when I was in high school. I am thinking of upscaling a pair or two black denim jeans into a skirt & maybe a vest. But right now unfortunately I have my wrist in a case and then due for a total knee replacement. So I am dreaming right now.

Jersey fabrics would be what to look for, for casual tops like t-shirts. The right types of jersey would work really nicely for the robe as well, as it's quite soft, drapes nicely and doesn't wrinkle easily; and might be a good option for underwear!

Make nine means exactly what it says. You make nine garments in a year. AO tracking paper doesn't exist. As long as you can get the individual pieces that's all you need. If the paper isn't big enough you have to paper piece to make it the required size. I'm a couture fashion designer and pattern cutter. Some people do make nine using nine different fabrics. Choose your patterns size upto 3 sizes bigger than the size you would buy off the peg as they work from different size charts. Satin cones in different weights like alot of fabrics. For the robe I'd use a light to medium weight satin

Hey lovely. I trace onto interfacing, if you have any of that lying around or its easier to get. Cant wait to see your makes. Ive got a few lined up for my learning to sew journey. And some stragglers to finish from last year that I gave up on haha.
@KatieFrancesCreative
@KatieFrancesCreative 2 года назад
I’m going to sound really silly but I don’t know what interfacing is! I thought it was the stuff that hardens fabric that you iron on 😂
@hayleylsomerfield
@hayleylsomerfield 2 года назад
@@KatieFrancesCreative that's right, it is pretty well exactly that. It's nice and thin, I use a light weight one. I use it for it's intended purpose but it can be pretty cost effective so works well to trace patterns. East coast fabrics usually have it pretty cheap. I think I got some from there for around $2/m. Might be cheaper than tracing paper?

my mom is quite poor but she managed to save up so she could buy me sewing material like a sewing machine ( :D) and whenever she is buying be fabrics its from the dollar store like bed sheets from the dollar store cause its cheap and still lots of material so thats a great life hack :) for axample she bought me 170cm worth of fabric with cute pink hearts on it :)
