Enjoy as I struggle to pronounce Mammillaria names, experience momentary brain lapses, and forget to point the camera in the right direction, etc etc etc. The usual, I guess.
I forgot to mention two more reasons why I love Mammilaria! Many are very easy to find and they have low price points, very important! In Arizona, you can find them at many big box doors for a few dollars, and there are plenty available online. I'm growing some from seed as we speak. Mammillaria cactus plants are a great gateway drug into the cactus obsession.

The seller I mentioned who ships their plants potted is teedeecacti:
www.etsy.com/s...
www.ebay.com/s...
The pottery place in Chandler where I tried making my own plant pots:
burstofbutterf...
Conclusion was that I'll probably leave pot making to the professionals ;)

Stunning Mammillaria collection, Jenny. The larger ones are awesome looking specimens. Love some of the pots you have them in, the one you made is very nice and suits that plant well. Thank you for sharing with us, have a wonderful day and happy growing 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

Thank you so much, Daz! I wish my little pot were a little larger and a little deeper! Since Mammillaria seem to grow out of tiny cracks in habitat, I'm planning to leave that one in there as long as it doesn't show signs of struggle due to space. Let's see what happens! I love the larger specimens as well except that they can be a challenge to repot!

This video! This is the one to make me subscribe. I'm in Tempe so I'll be using your channel for reference 😂. My Mammillaria Hahniana, Frida, unfortunately burned a bit couple weeks ago. I have all my cacti under shade but she was in the sun for an hour in a certain sunpath at 11:30 for a couple days. And earlier in the spring we had thrips so she had some neem oil on still. But now shes got some sun burns, but we're just gonna tell everyone she's variegated 🤣🤣😭

I love the little shade cloth hat at 15:16. I've spent so much energy trying to design bigger containers covered in shade cloth that I never even thought of just putting a little "hat" over some of my cactus.

Very nice mammillaria. I really like your pot you made. I just purchased a new mammillaria Camptotricha, I love it, as it is covered in course yellow wiry spines like a door mat. So much so you can't see the cactus underneath. You can touch it without any injury.

@@cookiescacti I bet it isn't. I have not done proper pottery making. I made my candy skull pot with some left over tile cement and smoothed it with car body filler. Not really a true clay pot. Hi Jenny! I can believe I missed this video! I looove mammillarias too! So many species to collect 🙌🏼. I saw in the video the one that you had covered in shade cloth…looks like a gymnocalycium to me don’t know the exact species but it would make sense it being sensitive to direct sun. Has having the shade cloth helped? Thanks again for sharing your collection with us! 🤩

LOL! This video was made back before I had editing software, everything had to be done in one take. I have no idea how I managed! Mammillaria will always hold a special place in my heart. I still have no idea on the ID of the plant under the shade cloth... could it be a Gymno? It has tubercles which makes it very confusing. The shade cloth has helped. I have since moved it closer to the pergola where it gets less sun and it seems to be happier now. Thank you for watching and commenting, Tatiana!

yeah, and i'm okay with slow growth but i need a couple of each type to be of flowering age so i can produce my own seed and create some hybrids so i'm going to be doing a bit of grafting to see if i can speed up the growth of some soon. but also, i will always buy more large plants when i can afford to! i've seen what happens to them if they get left at the box stores. it's sad. somebody has to take them home. at least at Bach's they get better with age so they can wait there for me. lol

@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Год назад
Thank you, Bart! I kept my mature Mammillaria and Astrophytum outside under the pergola all year last year and they did great. I'm planning to do the same for the rest of my mature plants this winter. As for my seedlings, I'm debating on what to do this winter. This will be the first winter for my seedlings that are outside in my shadehouse. I only have a plastic unheated greenhouse but that may be my only choice for the seedlings as I have no more grow space left indoors - all my indoor space is taken by my Copiapoa seedlings. What kind of plants are you growing from seed? How long have you been growing?
@bartlipetri6895
@bartlipetri6895 Год назад
@@cookiescacti I’ve never (yet) grown from seed, but have collected a wide assortment of cactus seeds (think i bought seeds from a Cactus Quest recommendation), and my criteria was that they be smaller varieties (my opuntia and cereus days are behind me). I’m planning on keeping baby plants inside for a couple years. In MA the summers offer good tree shade and nice temps on my deck, but humidity is high and I haven’t yet built a rain guard. I’m excited to finally plant the seeds, but will keep them under Barrina LEDs until potted I can better protect them outside from rain, sun, and insects.
