My Memaw's Pot Pie Recipe Cooked Plant-Based

I did it! I managed to convert my Memaw's conventionally bake chicken pot pie recipe into a vegan Instant Pot and Breville Smart Oven pot pie recipe.
Yes, I am A W E S O M E.
HERE'S ALL IT TAKES
(MeMaw’s Soy Curls Pot Pie serves 3 who will want seconds.)
Pie Crust (one top crust)
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/3 cup vegan margarine
1/2 tsp salt
2-3 tablespoons cold water
Veggie Filling
1 cup dry soy curls
1 cup no-chicken base broth (to rehydrate soy curls)
1 celery stalk
3 carrots
3 medium potatoes
1 small yellow onion
1 cup frozen green peas
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon salt
Pot Pie Gravy
Any remaining liquid from pressure cooking veggies
1 1/2 cup unsweetened plain soy milk
3 tablespoons ww pastry flour
Season with salt and pepper to taste

I love that you shared Memaw's recipe. Years ago I copied my mother's hand-written recipes, many of which were generations old, and bound them for each family within the extended family. They were so grateful! I have a hint that you probably already know but didn't remember. When you're adding liquids to a gravy or white sauce heat the liquid first and it will blend right in with the base. You'll never get lumps. Thank you for all your work. I love you back!

That was so sweet to see your Grandma"s original recipe. I got a little teary as well thinking of my Grandma and all the wonderful things she did for us. I'm sure she's looking down on you and is SO very proud of You!

Watching this made me cry but happy tears because you have beautiful memories of your Memaw and some of her delicious recipes to pass on to your beautiful family (and your fans). It reminded my of my Grannie who died a few years ago. She is the reason that I'm the woman that I'm today. She was such an awesome woman of God that loved to cook and serve others. I hope that I can be the kind of woman that she was. XOXO

Jill, we're sure you meant well with the oleo replacing butter or any animal shortening and soy milk replacing ordinary milk. If it was to fulfill a promise to not consume anything coming from animals, you've done it. On the other hand if it was for "health" reasons, you've missed the target. The oleo and soy milk contain things that are NOT Vegan. They are both highly processed with unnatural and unhealthful items. We make our own cow's milk substitutes with Pecans, Almonds and/or coconuts and pure Extra-Virgin Olive Oil can be used to replace butter or lard in many recipes. That being said, organic cow's milk and organic butter are both healthier for you than the substitutes these laboratories have come up with and paid (lobbied) our representatives in Washington to foist off on unsuspecting citizens

Finally made this the other week, it was so very delicious! I was hesitant because I never make pastry. Well honestly it was so easy and fast. I will make this again and again. Your picture of your mema's recipe framed was very touching, thank you for sharing that. I now am writing down my recipes for my girls.

You're a breath of fresh air, Jill. I'm weeping too, so touched am I! :) Memaw would be soooooo proud of you. CANNOT WAIT to make this!! Hubby's thrilled! He loves my veg cooking, and is a pie fiend! I am from New Zealand but have been in Texas since I was two. My Nana had an amazing ANZAC biscuit (cookie) recipe that I had to deglutenise (is that even a word?) because I have celiac. Nana passed August 2004, but she lives on -- across the ocean -- every time I bake her incredible bikkies. Took a double batch to a tea social. Came back empty handed! They were THE big hit. Everyone wanted the recipe. So I shared it. That's what Nana would've done. ♡♡♡

Hey Jill, I wanted you to know that my wife made the pot pie recipe today and it's the first time that we ever tried soy curls. Man was that good! Those soy curls had a wonderful texture that I sincerely appreciated. Thank you so much for the recipe!

This is the first time I've watch this video. Because of this, I now have my Christmas presents done I've gone to Walmart and got frames and copied grandma's recipe that my family loved. she's been gone since 1982. A lot of the people were asking it Thanksgiving about this particular recipe, no one knows that I have the recipe in grandma's writing this is gonna be wonderful! Thank you so much Jill! We have never met, I love you and your family just like your my own! Merry Christmas and happy New Year's my dear!

Jill, I had remembered coming across this recipe. I became plant based/vegan at the time you posted this. It's delicious. What a precious tribute to your memaw. She would be proud. I just made a family cookbook for my daughter. I photocopied hand written recipes in my moms and grandmas handwriting. It's like having them still here, while cooking. ❤️

Love your honesty Jill. Having turned 60, it just seems the metabolism has slowed down. Never really was overweight until my mid 50s . I have been walking 3 miles 5 days a week since my oldest started school but since we moved to South Dakota with actual winters, my walking has taken a real hit! Hate walking in snow and ice and below zero temps, so instead I hibernate inside. It's starting to warm up here now, and in fact just got back from a 3 mile walk around our local lake with the pugs. Feeling so virtuous, lol. It's a daily struggle to get out there, I'm telling you!

Loyda Frankhouser It's a struggle for me. I can think of a hundred other things to do besides exercise. I wish I was one of those folks who naturally LOVED exercising, like my husband. My husband isn't happy if he can't get his run every other day. He gets all grumpy without his runs. Me, I act like a toddler being told to take a nap, "I don't WANNA!" However, if someone told ME to take a nap, I would NOT think of a hundred other things to do instead. I'm being way too honest now, aren't I? :D

Crunchy Scott I watched your vegan cheese ball video last night. My Aunt Deb makes those every holiday dinner and I miss eating them. She likes to add onion powder and Worcestershire sauce to hers. I'm going to try your recipe next time I'm hankering a cheese ball. Like you, I don't need to a party to make one, I can eat them all on my own. ;D

At the end where you have your grandmother's recipe, I was crying right along with you. I lost my mother's old beat up cookbook chalked full of her notes and personal recipes when my husband and I had a house fire a while back. We lost almost everything that was on the first floor of our house and that cookbook is the only thing I still mourn from time to time. I wish I had gone ahead and framed some of her recipes when I had the chance and had them in my office. What a great idea!

I am heartbroken about the loss of your mother's cookbook right along with you. I'm sorry. Memaw kept all her best recipes memorized. The only time I saw her with a recipe was when it something new she was trying out. It took YEARS for my Aunt Deb and I to recreate the same flavors and textures of Memaw's best holiday recipes. Then went hubby, the kids and I started eating plant-based, I had to learn how to make Memaw's recipes plant-based and oil-free. I'm still learning ;D

Kathleen Athanas I've met several women who grew up in the same time as my Memaw who have the same writing style. I've chalked it up to how they were taught penmanship. I remember Memaw telling me of how she hated practicing penmanship. "The teachers made us write out individual letters until our hands cramped. Every loop had to be right or we'd have to keep writing."

Made your Memaw's pot pie again last night! Taking the yummy leftovers to Lent service soup supper tonight. While everyone else is eating SAD, DH and I will be happily and healthily munching on deliciousness! Loyda Frankhouser I totally agree! I'll tell ya, my family can nearly wipe out a full casserole dish of Memaw's pot pie in one sitting. Even my picky daughter chows down on it. Doesn't it feel wonderful to be eating truly healthy meals? My favorite part about eating wfpb is the ongoing energy I have. When I was eating grass-fed meats, true free-range eggs, raw milk, and other animal dairy, I was a MESS! No energy, hormones all over the place, drinking 5 coffees a day. I was falling apart despite all the 'clean' foods I was eating. I'm so glad the film FORKS OVER KNIVES was made. Changed my life forever. What put you on the wfpb path?

Ok you have me crying and remembering my Memaw, AKA Nonni. I have a special recipe of hers and I think I will get it put in a frame like yours. The pot pie recipe with the soy curls looks like it will fit the bill for next Sunday's special Easter Supper. I will check back next week at the same time to let you know how it came out.

You made me tear up girlfriend. Loved your story about your Memaw and the recipe. It is essential to keep old recipes like that. Even if you are vegan old recipes can easily be made Vegan...hell there is even a way to make Vegan Meringue! That recipe is so special and I'm so very happy you shared it with us. Wow, thanks for sharing your Memaw's veganized pot pie recipe with us! You had me tearing up at the end. Just last month my mom gave me my grandmas old recipe box with all her hand written and magazine clipping recipes. I know how you must feel having her original recipe in your possession. I wonder if our grandparents would've tried our soy curls.

I just made this today and it smells so good! I am still a little bit scared of the instaPot, mine is a brand from QVC so it was a big deal to use it but it worked in less than five minutes the veggies were all done. I really have to try this recipe - I love chicken pot pie (vegetarian), but I never made it before and this looks really yummy Hopefully, I can make it for my niece and nephew when they come to visit me. I also loved your Memaw's recipe in the frame! That's a great idea and precious momento. I discovered your channel tonight and just love it and how you bring who you are to what you're doing here. Thank you! I became a whole foods, plant-based vegan in May and am absolutely loving it! Thank you for sharing yourself and your family with all of us. You touched me. Btw, it got me thinking about my own family. I called my great-grandma (my grandmother's mother), mamaw, but had never head anyone else use anything that sounded remotely like that to refer to their grandparent. That side of the family is from Texas so I'm thinking it might be a Texas thing? I Googled it and it looks like it may be used in other parts of the south as well. Also: got my Instant Pot a few days ago and can't wait to try it out! That's how I came to find your channel... by looking for instant pot "how to" recipes. :). Take good care!

This is my secound time making it. I use chik peas instead of soy curls, I also cheat and use a store bought crust. Thanks for another great recipe :)

This was so yummy !! I did not bake it in the crust. I just ate it over two open biscuits. It was so good and even better this morning as my breakfast.

Holly Archer Pot pie for breakfast? I've never thought to do that but I will next time I make it. Biscuits would definitely make it a breakfast food, too. Did you make your own biscuits?

I envy your husbands love of running! I have done couch to 5k three times in the past year, and never made it past running 2 miles in 30 mins. I always felt great afterwards, having accomplished it, but I just HATE running! Naps, lol, what a concept! As always you crack me up Jill! Have a wonderful day! I'm off to take the pugs to the lake again. ( only one is ours, the other belongs to a gal at church who's having knee surgery).

one other thing about recipes, my mom's riceballs are famous in my family, EVERYONE loves them! I am going to have to get her to write down the recipe and I still have to try and veganize them. On New Years Eve my cousin recorded her saying how she makes them on her I-phone. too funny. I wish I had my nonna's recipes, she was a cute little lady off the boat from Italy and was an amazing cook of course

Made me tear up at the end! I still have my grandma's pumpkin pie recipe. I take it out every Thanksgiving and make her pumpkin pie. This year I have gone plant based (only one month in) and won't be able to use her recipe. I'll have to find me one of those frames for sure so I can see it always! Thanks for sharing! 💕

Great video! Some of my best recipes come from my grandma (I have to make them vegan). G-Mas definitely add an element of love to what they cook. To me, my grandmas recipes were more memorable than what my mom made growing up. Not saying that my mom was a bad cook, but my grandma's meals were special.

Jenna Dickenson You got that right about grandmas; they know how to put on a spread. My mother was NOT a cook by any means, we're talking Swanson dinners, and chili from a can. I've always thanked God my parents divorced and I went to live with Memaw and Papaw at age nine. Everything Memaw cooked and did for me was wonderful. She's the reason I know what it means to be a nurturing mother.

Vegan Mary It's so easy to print off recipes, but I should really take the time to write down our family favorites. I know the kids will appreciate it. Of course being a RU-vidr, they'll get to watch make their favorite meals when they need to remember how to cook them for their children.

I bought an ipot yesterday!!! It was on saw on Amazon for only $70. I don't know what to cook first! This is the first recipe I'm considering. I'll watch your other recipes and decide what to make. I haven't even read the manual yet, I'll just go by what you say! Thanks for sharing

First, welcome to the iPot family! WOOT WOOT!! Second, READ THAT MANUAL before you cook anything. It's not a complicated appliance by any means, but you still need to understand how the programs are set up so you can cook with great results. Did you buy my cookbook (O M Gee Good! Instant Pot Meals, Plant-based & Oil-Free) when you bought the iPot? If not, go get it. Buy the print copy and get the Kindle version for free. Anyhoo. Before it arrives, start with making something simple like brown rice. That was my first food to make in the iPot. There's a recipe for brown rice in the Instant Pot recipe book that came with the iPot. It's the same one I use everytime and it never fails.

Love this video! What a sweet gift of the recipe from you r Memaw! I have some from my sweet mother-in-law that I treasure. I'll make this soon. Jill, I have a question. I, in pre-vegan days, made a sloppy joe sandwich with crumbled hamburger. Could I use the soy curls for this? Do I grind up the soy curls before re-hydrating them?

Oh, sweetheart, what a lovely tribute to your Memaw...:) So, I am laughing at the Instapot being called your I-pot....I'm going to call mine, my "i-pot" from now on ,lol. Funny you should post this tonight, cuz I made "kung-po" soy curls tonight, soy curls "fried" in a sweet and sour sauce, added a bag of frozen Oriental veggies. I served it on baked potatoes, cuz I started the baked potatoes before I knew I was going to make the soy curls, lol. I would post the kung po sauce recipe, but I am ashamed I make something with 4 T. sugar

Don't have words to describe how much I LOVE this video!!! I love it so much, I LURV IT!!! :) Anyhoo.... if you didn't brush the top of the crust with water before placing the leaves on top, that may be why they just baked on top instead of becoming one with the top... I see it all the time on TV when they're putting embellishments on crusts, they talk about 'the glue' that holds them together...

I have my Grandma's recipe box that use to sit on top of her fridge.. can't get the grime off it and not sure I want to ( I know, sounds gross, but whadda ya gonna do).... at any rate, going through her recipes in her own hand writing is something I'll cherish for my life and pass along at some point as well... I agree with you 100% about keeping great recipes alive...even if we do modify them to suit our lifestyles.....

Lois Stumbaugh I first tried them at a local restaurant here in Austin then I went out on the Internet and bought them straight from the maker. ButlerFoods.com I started with the 8 ounce bag but quickly graduated to buy their 12-pound box. Soy curls keep in the freezer until you need them. With my family of four, plus friends, I suspect we can eat up 12-pounds of soy curls in a year's time.

We just got our first bag of Soy Curls EVER today! Yeah, I ordered the 12 lb box, cos that is the BEST bargain! OMGGGG THEY ARE SOOOOOOO DELICIOUS!! Nom nom nom nom nom nom! 😋 Hubby couldn’t BELIEVE it wasn’t chicken, goodness me! I’m allergic to chicken, so he has really missed all those amazing chicken dishes I used to make back in the day. Now all those beloved treasures are making a comeback. He’s already planning food revamped with Soy Curls for our next annual Super Bowl party 2020! 🤣🥰 It’s only baseball season yet! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I get it, why people freaking out over this product. Such satisfying, filling, comforting, beautiful food. I was close to my Granny too; she was a wonderful cook. I loved learning to cook alongside her, standing on a chair at her counter. Sometimes I miss her lovely, comforting chicken, tomato and squash stew. Now I can recreate it! Maybe your Memaw and my Granny are in Heaven exchanging recipes, and giggling that food technology has really changed radically since their day. My Granny has been gone for 30 years this coming October, so hard to believe. Your Memaw treasure is just priceless. I’m so glad you have a piece of personal memorabilia from her. Priceless.

I’m not sure if you even caught that pun there - leaf this out - crack me up! I love the recipe,Jill. I am disappointed to see a regular pie crust - I was so sure you had come up with an alternative something! I have seen some versions that use almond flour, and now I’m wondering if there was a way to use tofu or yogurt…? Love your joy, as always :) Ok, I just now realized this was from 2015 - I’m sure you’ve come up with something, so now I’m going to go look for it - pie season is coming! :)

Oh Michele, I wish there was an alternative fat for making truly flaky pie crust. After 10 years of eating plant-based, I have not found a better tasting pie crust than the traditional way. Thankfully, pie season means baking 4 pies, two at Thanksgiving, two at Christmas. After that, I'm done until the next year.

@@JillMcKeever ha - no kidding! We went vegan for my guy’s health - he’s on dialysis, then they said he needed a triple bypass. Following Dr McDougall dropped the health markers to the point where his hear dr felt comfortable recommending him for transplant again - so he avoids fat - period. Lol. I’m still working on it 😁

These days, for the chicken pot pie, I skip the pie crust and make drop biscuits with flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and soymilk. I make the pot pie filling and gravy as usual, then drop the biscuits on top. It takes less time to bake because I'm really just baking the biscuits. Sometimes, I get lazy and make pot pie soup and bake a pan of drop biscuits.

I just made this for dinner! Delicious! The only issue I had was my soy curls were really mushy. Should I have squeezed them out first besides draining?

Giving soy curls a squeeze works best when adding to a dish that will have a sauce. I leave them on the moist side when I want to cover them with spices and brown them in a pan.

I made this over the weekend. My first time using soy curls but I didn't enjoy the texture. I cooked them along with my veggies in the ipot. Maybe I should leave them out of that process and they'll have a firmer, more "chicken" like texture?

Hey Jill, I was just scouring the web for soy curl recipes and noticed that you are the main maker of them. Just a marketing idea...You should contact them and let them know that! Maybe you could partner with them in a recipe series to help get the word out about soy curls. Could be mutually beneficial. I'm not a savvy business guy, but when I noticed that Butler food really doesn't seem to market them as well as they could, and found very few recipes other than yours, the idea popped into my head. Just an idea....Now, I guess I'd better get busy adapting my favorite chicken curry recipe to using soy curls ;-)
