At 73 I have a very quiet and controlled life and when I saw one of your videos I decided it was time to see if a man my age could grow a beard like yours. Eight months of Covid quarantine and damn if I don't have something going on.The cheeks are the toughest part for me and the color is all over the place but in a year I should be able to trim it to what I want. It takes a lot to get the thickness going and Ive followed what so many said and have not trimmed it. The sad part about all this is I can't go out and show it off until Mask time is over. Im excited that the last phase of my life will attract a little attention and fun. Thanks for getting me out of my old man rut.

As we mature then ones personal style is open to change, and how fantastic that is, otherwise we’d be stagnant on every level of who we are. Great video, really enjoyed it.

I think it should not really matter if someone like me or someone else thinks it's good that you've decided on a shorter beard. I myself find the message you give us here so much more important and to see how much better you seem to feel ... Personally, 4 years ago your BigBeard and your style inspired me to grow a beard and change my appearance. Since then, I also change the length every now and then, even sometimes completely shaved, just to watch how it is without and to see him grow again ... Changes are part of it and they are not always negative - as in your case once again the best example. Thank you

This is a really profound angle what it means to be intentional with your style. I also don't like to be referred to as, "the guy with the beard". I run a style channel that very much revolves around beards, but I rarely say the word "beard" in public and often find I adopt a dismissive attitude when people define me by my facial hair. I love wearing a longer beard, but it definetly has its downsides.

I must admit your style has influenced my own beard & hair style. I've enjoyed your tips and non beard related videos... But for me I'll not go short again. I.. felt.. I looked like Pápa smurf 🙄. I'm 45 now and understand that going 40 can feel like . " reality Shock " even though I felt much younger at the time. I hear you on looking right for your age 👍.. Careful not to look older 😔.. 40 is the New 30 😁👍

I like the look. It’s cool. It’s mature. It’s important to find your style. Before I turned 50 I toyed with the idea of going grey, because I started getting prematurely at 30. So when I turned 51 I said, “That’s it! Done with hair dyes, and the cost of it!” It took about a year or so before I got completely grey. Now, I get nice compliments on it. I actually feel like an adult now. I also had my hair cut short which makes for easier maintenance. I like not being concerned with what others think of my style. I agree with you. As you age, you find your place and who you want to be and that’s extremely important. When you don’t grow and learn and your style doesn’t change somewhat with it, then it becomes a problem. I really like the way you make your videos.

I grew out my beard for ten months with three ”shaping” trims spaced out. I did it because I never had and wanted to see what I could grow. Sure, I can grow a full beard, but I realized that there was more to me than my beard. I’ve since trimmed it down to 12mm. I’m going to grow it for 60-90 days for a fuller, but more manageable look. Evolution, I suppose, but I’m also interested in changing my look a bit. Thanks for making this video. We are more than our beards and not all great beards are massive. It's really a question of confidence! Thanks, Jeff!

This was fantastic. I love how you have such a growth mindset. I recently decided to grow a short beard, about a quarter to half inch all around. Everyone kept talking to me about it and loved it, but after they saw me with the new beard the first time, they didn't mention it again, which I think is nice. I didn't want it to become my identity but rather complement my other features: hair, etc. Great quality as always. I'm loving the new format for your vids. Can't wait to see what else you have in store.

The change suits you and change is good. It is too easy to get stuck in a style that no longer suits or satisfies our personal taste. Of course, we mature and our bodies change. Some men need to rethink their wardrobe because they gain weight while others lose some. Some men experience hair loss and need to go short or shave it all. In the end, it’s about feeling comfortable with your appearance, your body and yourself. Like you said it’s about being “you” and not just another “beard”. Thanks for the great video, Jeff. I’m looking forward to see how your style develops over the course of the next year. Max

What if one just grew their beard and kept it trimmed, or not, however they liked whenever they felt the need, short or long, dispensing with pontificating? Maybe that's where you've landed. edit: I only mention because it's interesting that I found your channel via various beard videos looking for trimming techniques, not so much from a style perspective. I've had a beard of varying lengths the majority of my adult life (I'm nearly 46) and you've basically described how I've always approached it: easy and manageable. But full disclosure, I came to that via a small amount of laziness - it's easier to give cheek and neck a touch up now and again, and the rest trim or knock-back than try to manage a specific style or (please save me) shave every day. And that in and of itself becomes a style as you get to know your face and stop thinking about it too much. Cheers.

I’m digging the new approach to content Jeff, good stuff here. I’m sure it’s been kind of strange being so consumed by something as trivial as facial hair for so long. I don’t have nearly as many eyes on me and I still feel like I wear a beard for others, and that I’m so absorbed with what they think. I recently brought it back to just a mustache (with some long stubble) and I get some looks from people. But I’m kind of sick of worrying so much about what others think of my style - I like how I look with a mustache, so I’m going to wear one. Same with the beard, I wear it because that’s what I like, not because it’s in vogue or because others approve. Anyway, keep up the good work, and enjoy the new look 👍🏻 cheers.

You certainly make a good argument. choose a style for you not for others, but at the same time don't change because of the attention you get from others... difficult dilemma. Something I have been wondering myself, do people notice me for me or just because I got a beard... keep up the good work and do the things you want to do, not because we (the audience) would like to see them. Also good luck with the the new roads you're carving out in your journey.

Now I have a peaky blinders style hairstyle with a shorter beard. My baby daughter keeps grabbing my beard so it might have to go a lot shorter, dreading it but I think it’s the right move

What’s up bud. Great points. If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will. When we try to do it all and have it all, we find ourselves making trade offs on margins that we would never take on as our intentional strategy. When we don’t purposely choose where to focus our energy and time on, other people will choose for us. When we least expect it, we have lost site to what is meaningful and important. We can make our choices intentionally or allow othe people’s agenda control our lives. Keep up the great work🤙🏼💪🏼

Eusunt Diavol - hmmmm.... so are you attempting to state that you think a "short beard matures u"??? I seriously don't see how you equate a "long beard" with being immature?? Any length beard on a man looks sexy, masculine, and is mature. Long beards ROCK! And short beards looks good too! But don't start talking like short beards are "better" or that short beards are more mature, because BOTH short and long beards look sexy, masculine, and mature! - Clean shaven is the ONLY option that looks immature, why do you think they call it "baby face"? What ever you do, please don't start society down a reverse trend back to the days of Abercrombie 1990's clean shaven teeny bopers and boy bands ICK!
@jeffreybuoncristiano
@jeffreybuoncristiano 5 лет назад
Yes, shorter beards are more mature. Like short hair. Longer hair of any sort on men is a dated style. Exuberance is usually for the outlandish and young as far as style goes. go through our CURRENT style ofthe times, and you won't find many men of high class, maturity, and power with long beards or long hair. Maturity is like minimalism, you keep what you love, but remove the excess. Shaven is also a fantastic look and refined. Yes, i think more men should shave off their crummy beards, style wise, but i am more of a supporter of helping men think they can do whatever they want with how they look and gain confidence. That is more important, but doesn't change my collection of information of beard styling and the correlation with mature men.

also, i never said a short beard is what matures a person, a mature person is the person who opts for a less flashy and shorter style.

Yeah I hear you, man. I've realized over the past years in youtube, that many people get really obsessed with trying to grow a beard to the point that its no fun anymore and just constant looking in the mirror and being stressed and anxious about it. That's soo not the right approach to go with. Growing a beard should mean relaxing, basically, letting yourself go, just chilling and stop shaving on a regular basis. That' s what it should feel like! I've noticed guys worry too fkn much and look in the mirror every single day to see how's coming , so they end up giving themselfs fake and square looks that just look stupid and not at all manly. Even jack miloko from beardbrand, it looks like for the past 5 years his only concern in life is taking care of his beard and talking about it, so I cant help but seeing him as a kind of dorky guy and too preocupied and not flowing. Guys, let your beards grow naturally and when grooming go more even, not too much below your chin, otherwise you look like terrorists, lol. What's key I think, its that you go do something! Spend your timw in the gym, or doing outdoors activities, and let time pass. Its gonna make the difference.

@@jeffreybuoncristiano there is no reason in the particular. There are topics that I just enjoy and there are others that I enjoy and I want you to have my comment. the evolution of your content I think it's great. and I want you to continue on this path, since as I commented, I think it is a path that I am also following. keep it up. just as a note: the first video I saw of beard brand was one of yours but then I saw your channel and I thought. First of all, how could you not be happy with your face? you are so good looking. The hair looks nice but it usually does. Again, you have a beautiful head of hair. Personally, i like it with just a little mor product to make it "glisten" a bit.

i like how open you are about your decisions and concerns. i personally admire men that have the patience and genes for a full, long beard. but i also am irritated and confused when the beard elongates the head further and further. where does the chin stop? how long is your face? do you even have a jawline? do your cheekbones directly grow into your collarbones? :D so basically i like beards best when they are shorter, like the way you have it now.

I loved this, Jeff. I've always kept in mind that though a beard is cool and people seem to notice it, that it isn't what defines me or makes me a man. I've gone down to a stubble, I've gone super long, I've kept a 'corporate beard' and every time it was about what I wanted to do with it then, not about losing my identity or anything silly like that.

Great video. I have a long beard and hair. I am in my 60s. I met you at Menfluential conference last year. I have been to Austin and been using Beardbrand products for 3 years. I am thinking about a drastic change because i do not want to be identified as the guy with long hair and long beard. But i am just afraid to make the leap.
@jeffreybuoncristiano
@jeffreybuoncristiano 5 лет назад
Yes, I feel you all the way. The identiy issue and constant labeling as such is really a problem. It takes a LOT, and i mean A LOT of self exploration to take a leap like that. I personally don't like doing giant changes, i like giant goals, and chip away at them. Perhaps instead of cutting and "leaping" You can help yourself by writing out what exactly are the specifics you don't like about this labeling and what you can do about them. Can you tackle the issues outside of a giant cutting? Is it something else aside from hair such as the ideas of you from other or something like that? For me, I journal daily and that helped me. Also, it was nice to meet everyone there, but i was so ill, i ended up going home early i fell so sick. I was actually bedridden for about 7 days after that!

I think you sound scared to shave it all off which to me sounds quite immature. Men who never ever shave to me says you're not confident enough to uncover your face and you hide behind the beard to some degree. Either because you don't think you have good bone structure a weak chin or mental confidence. Sometimes a hard reset is a good thing, if you don't like it that's the great thing about hair... It grows back, but at least you prove to yourself you only have a beard for the right reasons. Just my thoughts no offence intended. I've been through all the same beard sizes and landed on short for my taste.
@jeffreybuoncristiano
@jeffreybuoncristiano 5 лет назад
I agree. But I have shaved it off many times in my life and twice in the past few years. It was ok.
@thomasnothstine7493
@thomasnothstine7493 5 лет назад
Precisely the same logic applies to a man who never lets his facial hair grow. Some guys are "scared" to shave it off and some are "scared" to let it grow. Maturity/immaturity has nothing to do with it (except for being able to grow a beard in the first place). Everyone dresses/grooms for confidence. For some men that means a beard of some kind or another and other men it means clean-shavin (a shame in my opinion). And I can hardly think of a "wrong" reason to have a beard; just about any reason's fine or no reason at all - it's just what happens when you throw the razor away. It doesn't have to be some huge life decision - easy come easy go, grow it if you want. . or not. . . but never take the beard thing too seriously. One may have more mature reasons for growing a beard of any length or style but no beard style is inherently more "mature" than the other - it all comes down to personal preference.
@jeffreybuoncristiano
@jeffreybuoncristiano 5 лет назад
I agree with most of this. But I would have to say that maturity DOES have a style. Especially with looks. For instance we all know that Steve buchemi meme with his hat sideways looking like a kid and it's wrong. It's funny, but it is a rather good example that age does illicit certain characteristics of style and can frown upon other for that age not for the age it belongs to.
@thomasnothstine7493
@thomasnothstine7493 5 лет назад
@@jeffreybuoncristiano "Maturity does have a style" . Agreed. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I would have to disagree,though, if one insisted that shorter beards are inherently a more mature style than longer ones - which your video title seems to imply. I would say that as far as beard length alone - short, long or any length in between - all can be worn by equally mature men depending on individual circumstances. I live in a small Alaskan fishing town (Cordova). This has always been beard country and big-bearded men are common. Up here, beards aren't a fashion, they're Alaskan - they just are. . . most of us are too busy working hard and playing hard to really even care one way or the other what our faces are doing or that a certain beard style looks more mature than another. Anyway, thx for the reply and great beard video! NIce beard, too, btw. I'll have to concur with a couple other posters that you rock the slightly longer style in a way that just doesn't work for many guys. But hey, the video's about not wanting to be noticed for the beard, so. . . never mind! :) Later, my bearded brother.

The video IS about my beard. Which is VERY VERY VERY rare for me to talk about, as you should have noticed by now.
