I moved from the United States and now I’m living out of a suitcase while my husband and I live abroad. Leaving the USA was a big decision. We chose to sell everything we own and live as digital nomads while traveling abroad full-time. This next chapter of our lives is both exciting and scary. Living an extremely minimalist lifestyle, everything I own is in a suitcase. I’m sharing my packing light tips, what’s in a minimalist’s bag, and minimalist travel tips. I love this video, you inspire me, and I consider myself to be a minimalist, having decluttered all through my life, I still have too much, especially books. How did you deal with your books and most importantly photos of loved ones? I would absolutely love to pare down what I own to fit into a suitcase the same as you have. Though I'm not in the situation to travel, I'd be so at peace to achieve what you have, in paring down. But, please, I would be grateful to hear about your photos and books, how you handled these? 🙏❤

The 4 x categories you’ve talked about. My trouble is coats and sports jackets. I seem to have collected a few designer pieces over the years. However I now have a separate category of items I’ve been wearing for a decade and have a good idea what to pack in a suitcase. Got rid of the suitcase though. Have duffle bags instead.

similar to you, I'd bring comfortable and versatile clothes/shoes, basic toiletries, my laptop, kindle, phone, notebook/journal, and yoga mat. Also, I LOVE my frother that I use to make my lattes at home so I might make room for that. My only issue would be not being able to bring my pillow... I do not like using others' pillows although I suppose I could just bring my own pillow cover.

I find the older I get, 65 now, the more certain things mean to me. I am German and brought my thrifted old furniture and household items from my Mom and Grandparents with me. It makes me feel close to them when I use a vase that belonged to my Grandmother or use a plate my mother gave me. Sometimes a memory comes out of the blue when I was a child. I regret having moved to the US 23+ yrs ago but cannot return because of financial reasons and my kids are here. All I own are things that really mean something to me and the furniture I have are 90+ years old. When I was young I loved the idea to live here and there, but not now. I could not live just traveling and not have a place that I have surrounded with things meaningful to me. Love my plants, my dog. I need to have a spot that is mine and makes me feel save. Everyone is different ;). Your vlogs are very calming, thought provoking and I enjoy them a lot even though I cannot imagine for me to live that way. Also friends are so very important for well being. They are not made easy and my true friendships are decades old. Looking forward to the vlogs. Smooth travels.

I am with you on that. I also left Germany many years ago and now i sometimes miss it.... came with 3 suitcases and now have a home and 4 pets as well as kid and hubby...so no chance to return. I also have to need of a little spot for us to feel safe....i love minimalism and keep stuff simple except my wine, flour and skincare selection.

Same here. Moved to Europe from the States 30 years ago. Really, really regret it. There have been numerous studies on how changing cultures as an adult affects one and it gets worse as one ages.

This lifestyle can work when you're young, healthy, and adapt to radical change quickly. The older you get the more difficult it becomes to the point of next to impossible as your health declines and it will eventually. I'm 77 lived what you are years ago and got it out of my system. How much or how little stuff you has is unimportant, your attachment to it is what's important.

Inspiring vlog, thank you! I have met a gentleman who lives as a nomad retirement and stays in hostels, he takes bicycles that a locked on telephone poles with wheels, seat and chains stolen. He works everyday rebuilding these bikes and gives them away free to local children.

It would be a nightmare for me to not have a “base”. I need an anchor, I need roots. I need my things (although I have very few). I looove travelling and return home. A home which is all mine and always there. I suppose we’re all different on this subject😊

same size suitcase i took to Cuenca, Ecuador when i escaped the madness i also had a large "daypack" (or small backpack w/belt support) with my laptop and camera gear and extra pairs of shoes and sandals (i have wide feet - bought extra before moving) moved in to fully furnished efficiency with queen size bed, wifi, cable TV, full kitchen (with all utensils), and a courtyard and upper deck with fabulous view . $420 a month all utilities included

I was a nomad for two years out of college and was so freeing. I had a pair of jeans, a pair of light cotton pants, two tshirts, one long sleeve shirt, a heavyweight tshirt tunic that doubled as a dress, a wool challis floral scarf that I used as a hip wrap, head covering, cowl. a large gauzy scarf that doubled as a beachcoverup and a beach towel. Undergarments and a swimsuit and a windbreaker/rainjacket. I did have to buy a warmer coat as I ran into snow, but did so at a flea market and gave away when it warmed up. I did find after time my nesting instinct kicked in and I missed making and entertaining and hosting friends and family and I moved home and began acquiring things. I have moved alot so try to only have meaningful and useful items that I find beautiful. But the number is beginning to feel like too much. Its interesting to see how our possessions expand and contract over the seasons of our lives. I am ready for a contraction again, but not ready to give up some of my treasured items that bring me joy. I also enjoy crocheting and quilting but keep my stash to two bins worth of materials. What helped me immensely in letting go of stuff was looking at potential health hazards (my grandmothers china and crystal high in lead, my mothers things came from her house full of mold/mycotoxins,etc).

It’s so easy to fill up our homes with possessions and incredibly difficult to part with them, or actually choose those few things to be kept. I have been downsizing forever. Amazing how much energy and stress it involves as well as expenses moving and storing them. Unless you have to move you can’t even fathom the burden. And if you have to move many times then it’s almost an unbearable burden. I admire your courage. Have a wonderful freedom you’ve acquired through your dedication to the essential you. ❤

It does get easier. I started off by donating 1 bag of clothes and 1 bag of books and few furniture. In England here it gets collected from our doorstep- we have left items in boss outside our home aswell. Paintings, toys books. Interesting times we are living in- friends n family is important

I’m 72 and although I cannot afford world travel, I became a minimalist, and have lived in Baja Mexico for five years. I live without any modern conveniences including no running water, and I now enjoy kayaking on the sea of Cortez and camping/ exploring this land and it’s people and food! I don’t regret letting go of all the “things”🙂

I love your channel. I wonder if you would be willing to produce some content regarding minimalism and teenagers. We're quite a frugal household and have 13 and 15 year old teens. My husband and I both grew up with poverty mindsets and don't want to pass this onto our teens. We don't want our kids remembering us as tight fisted! @@deborahlozano7134 And what's nice about using other's stuff is it doesn't have the mental weight your own stuff has. I stayed in an Extended Stay America for 7 months once, with only 3 boxes (1 of clothes and toiletries, 1 of books, 1 of painting supplies) and I turned out to love living like that much more than living in the 3300 sq ft house we were having built and subsequently moved into (and sold after 2 years). Sure I had to wash their dishes, but that's about it. They washed the bed linens. They vacuumed and cleaned the bathroom and provided me shampoo and towels. It was very carefree and relaxing not having to maintain things myself, buy new sheets when the old wear out, or repair the garbage disposal if it was broken. One call is all it took. I wish there were more true residential hotels around where people were meant to live long-term. I'd be happy to live like that again if it weren't for the constant churn of sometimes loud neighbors and thin walls in the room next door.

Consider the following: Anything that you take with you, that is not essential to your daily existence, but indeed, weighs you down instead…is most often being taken by you…out of guilt. Anything sentimental represents the guilt you hold, for potentially discarding something that “represents” a part of your past life..or something that represents the work or passion of a loved ones connection to the object. That’s how we eventually get weighed down….by the guilt we chose to carry. A guilt that we are choosing to no longer stay physically connected to these objects…to no longer be the physical caretakers of this sentimental weight. When considering this, I am not suggesting forgetting all that is meaningful in your life, but perhaps chose to represent these recollections in a special place in your mind.. Our ancestors had no means to gather things the way we do today….so they often took a snip of hair or cut out a key passage from a precious letter or kept the most evocative item or two. Remember that most beautiful moments are probably with you no matter where you go. With the recognition of why you are cluttering your life may be based on the guilt you feel if you let these things go. You may feel as if you are letting the memories down by not physically keeping each one. Remember to forgive yourself because this guilt is imaginary and you must allow yourself to let it go.

Hi Connie! I shared this vlog with my brother and sister in-law who have two small boys. Considering he works from home, and the eldest nephew does remote learning, they have been spending more and more time on the road, living in their RV. and have truly been enjoying it! A yr. ago we lost our mom, and i think this had an impact on my brother. He realized life is short and one never knows when our time will come, so if you are able, get out there and see life.

Hi I lost my mum almost two years ago and the mental shift and learning what really is important has been truly eye opening and like you say Connie it’s not the things you would think mean the most. It’s the little things. I have been minimising our home with only the things that truly matter. I’ve been teaching g my children that a memory isn’t in things, it’s in your heart. I wish I had this lesson when I was younger. Also mum was a bit of a hoarder so I never want my kids to face the same thing. Enjoy your travels Connie. ❤

@@louisetilbury3443 Hello, thank you for sharing. I can totally relate. MY mom was too. My younger sister and I began sifting and sorting through her things. Oh Boy! We had NO idea. She concealed it al so well Unfortunately, my sister and I are now at odds. I have discovered through the process that she is indeed quite materialist. Greed, lies, deception, patronizing have been her tactics. Basically, sacrificing her morality in order to obtain what she wanted. I am CRUSHED. My advice to others, is DO NOT leave your home ot your children. Be specific, as to your final wishes.

She was greedy and cruel. It was me and my dad clearing his home to move house closer to me and my family. The process has taught us that things are nothing without the people you truly love and love you.

I have moved a couple of times with our adult child. We lived in small apartment and I started to declutter because I wanted to have less things. We now just moved to a small house. So I decluttered my belongings by donating my clothes and I shredded 14 bags of my papers. Mind you I didn't know that I had that much papers!! I have been dreaming of doing exactly what you did and the thought of the possessions is very overwhelming to me. Part of it is that my house is so important to me but the thought of a more free lifestyle is so appealing. I am sorting through items now just to pair my life back and I am approaching that process in a similar way, although not as an extreme.

This is similar to the Burning House Question I came across some years ago: what would you grab if your house was burning? I don't own any expensive jewelry but I have a jewelry box that belonged to my mother and a small jewelry/ music box my husband gave me and after I thought about the Burning House Question, I went through my sentimental items and put the most precious ones into those 2 boxes. Now I am ready if our house catches fire!

I think you’re exceptionally adventuresome and on the road to find out, (Cat Stevens lyric). Love to see what your husband packed. Know that even though you’ve whittled your belongings down you still have places to stay, vehicles to travel in, food you purchase and utensils to cook with - as well as many other “things” you use that while they don’t fit in a bag and you don’t own them, you utilize them. Minimalism at its narrowest is having one set of clothing, sleeping outside, finding food, which is certainly not for everyone! ENJOY your new life. I have the intuition you will. It seems like a break from most of life’s hassles. Good for you.

Connie, I've been following you for a few years now. Thank you for being such an inspiration on my minimalist journey over these last few years, I am in absolute awe of your latest adventure. After reading the book 'You Might Die Tomorrow' recently and watching your journey to being a digital nomad, I'm currently entertaining the idea of downsizing to a camper van from my studio apt in order to travel the U.S. for a year or so. I'm just beginning my research phase and still have a way to go before I could make it happen, if I decide to do so. Heck even this phase is kind of exciting. 😊

I love your thoughtful process. The hardest things for me to part with would be sentimental family items. Great grandparents clocks and furniture. Though if I really minimalized I would let them go. Give family the option to have 1st. I have things because I live in a stable household but I only really need the basics of life.

An experiment someone had me do once. Imagine your house is about to catch fire and you have literally 3 minutes to run in and very quickly grab items to save.. what would you get? The idea was that I was to make a list of a few items that were most important to me. I wrote I would run in to get old photo albums (I'm at an age where there are far more photos on paper than digital). So that. My bible (probably offends you but I'm trying to make a point with this story :) Some scrapbooks. Then I was asked to make a list of the 3 most expensive items in my house. Wow. I got it at that point. I wrote the three most expensive items, while he was explaining that I don't value the money I have, or I wouldn't spend so much of it on things that don't matter. None of the expensive items were on my "fire grab" list. It was eye opening for me, and I am so much more mindful of what I purchase now.

I find traveling to be very stressful and can't wait to get back home to see my pets. I dislike being at airports, I am diabetic and to find low carbs meals while traveling is just a very hard thing to do and live in fear of hypoglycemia while out when traveling. I really wouldn't want to live out of a suitcase. We have traveled quite a bit and the more I traveled, the more I disliked it. There is no place like home to me and thanks to wonderful people like you I have a minimal and simple lifestyle. I do know that you just love travelling and I wish you great happiness in your travels. Thanks again for all of your videos.

I like living in the USA and like visiting other countries. As we age, something’s happen where things change. Our annual trip to Florida was postponed due to my sister being diagnosed with AML. She lived alone so I attended every doctors appointment, Chemo treatment took her for blood transfusions for the last year. Last week she lost her battle , I was so glad I only lived an hour away and could take her and the last few weeks stay by her side. Somehow trips, sight seeing just didn’t seem important. I follow AtoZen that did what you did also, but her last video she mentioned possibly coming back to the US. With visiting and staying near your family, I’m sure you will wind up staying close to one of them due to being near grandkids. Parfois ,des possessions liées à des activités "secondaires" (comme pour vous le Ukulele ou le tricot) pourraient sembler relativement non essentielles voire accessoires ....sauf qu'elles nourrissent notre âme ! Du coup ,elles deviennent ... vitales ! Pendant des années ,je me nourrissais littéralement en créant des comptines ,des chansons, en m'accompagnant à la guitare. Cela faisait chanter mon âme.Je peins actuellement des galets ramassés sur les chemins. Cela concourt à mon équilibre et donc à MON essentiel . ❤🙏

I think it is most important for everyone to take stock in what is truly essential. Humans tend to hoard and amass clutter. There will always be some things you need to carry,but most of our mess is easily,cheaply replaced once we get to where we are going. It's like a reset. Certainly it can be scary initially,but at the end you find you will be okay. Traveling light is best.

I think the most important things for me would be some items that my grandchildren made for me, small items that were my parents when they were alive, watch, bracelet, family pictures and crafting supplies. Would be difficult. I also have a ukulele, electronics, yoga gear and clothes. Yikes would be a lot

In Germany it is possible to rent clothes for a day (e.g. for special occasions), a month or even longer. This is definitely a good way to have variety without having to buy new stuff! Have fun on your journey of discovery and greetings from Germany.

What would I consider as essential possessions that fit in to a suit case? Connie this is such a thought provoking question, as I think about it and look around me, I’m realising there actually isn’t much that I would find essential. However it is hard to let things go when you own a big house and feel the need to decorate it etc. I for one would love a tiny home in the country with a large outdoor area looking out to a view. Or go travelling around the country, staying in nature. I wish I could pack up and do it now, but alas have a husband with his feet stuck firmly in place.

I think it's wonderful you and your husband have the opportunity to visit your children and grandchildren. I think as you age you will get tired of nomadic living and eventually settle down again - perhaps close to one of your children. But, for now, thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. I would love to live a nomadic life. I’m not attached to any of my stuff, even things that belonged to my mother and my beloved Nanna. I could easily past on all of it as my memories aren’t attached to those items they’re in my heart and thoughts. So to answer your question I’d take my capsule wardrobe, my iPhone and iPad that’s it! The rest could go.

Is it really about the things or an attachment to the things? Because now youre renting and borrowing things rather than owning them. Sometimes the minimalism sounds like anorexia, a self righteous focus on the absence rather than a healthy appreciation of the presence, a mindful consumption of the new, and a willingness to let it all go if need be.

When we used to travel, we took way tooooooo much. Later, we went to England and another trip to Isreal with only carry on and a large purse. Such a relief not to deal with such heavy loads or lost luggage. God bless.

Interesting video. Several years ago, based on my personal experience, I wrote an essay about "What to Bring" for expats seeking to relocate to Costa Rica. It boiled down to what I called "practical and comfort" items, and every item depended on the individual's personal needs. You've done a wonderful job of showing how to achieve the minimum nomad packing goals!
